Bonnie S. Wells

HENDERSONVILLE — Bonnie Fern Smathers Wells, 93, died Sunday May 16, 2004. She was one of six children born to Gaston and Elizabeth Smathers of the Dutch Cove section of Canton. She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Worth W. Wells, who died in 1984. She was a registered nurse and retired from Pardee Hospital in 1973 at which time she went to work at Bon Worth Inc. Bon Worth was named in honor of both Bonnie and Worth Wells. She was a member of Shaws Creek Baptist Church. Surviving are her two sons, Wayne Wells and his wife, Suzanne, and Loren Wells and his wife, Keela; four granddaughters, Andrea James, Starla Fore, Mercedes Coleman and Jingle Wells; two great-granddaughters and two great-grandsons. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Shaws Creek Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Shaws Creek Baptist Church, 91 Shaws Creek Church Road, Hendersonville, N.C.; or to one’s favorite charity. Thos. Shepherd & Son Funeral Directors is in charge of the arrangements.

Hazel M. Guffie

CANDLER — Hazel Mathis Guffie, 88, of 25 Happy Hollow Drive, died Tuesday, May 18, 2004, at Mountain Area Hospice Solace Center in Asheville. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Homes and Cremation Services. The Revs. Randy Melton and Neal Roland will officiate with burial following at Watauga Baptist Church cemetery in Franklin. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mountain Area Hospice Solace Center, P.O. Box 16, Asheville, NC 28802.

Doris Ann Smith

HENDERSONVILLE — Doris Ann Smith, 70, of Hendersonville, died Sunday, May 16, 2004, at Mission Hospitals. A native of Haywood County, she was the wife of Jasper Lee Smith Sr., who died in 1998. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Brenda Pace, who died in 1989; and a son, Jeffery Smith, who died in 1967. She was a member of Etowah Baptist Church and dearly loved all of her family. Surviving are two daughters, Linda McMinn and her husband, Dennis, of Horse Shoe and Carolyn Smith of Arden; six sons, Randy Smith and his wife, Rosa, of Horse Shoe, Jasper Smith Jr., Jerry Smith and his wife, Delores, of Asheville, Richard Smith and his wife, Elizabeth, of Hendersonville, Michael Smith and his wife, Pam, of Asheville and Donnie Smith and his wife, Karen, of Nevada; 23 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and special cousins, Barbara Plemmons, Mary Jo Foster and Tamra “Johnny.” Service were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Shepherds Church Street with the Rev. Curtis Moore officiating. Burial was in Pisgah Gardens. The family received friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Thos. Shepherd & Son Funeral Directors.

Ralph F. Vinson Jr.

Ralph Furman Vinson Jr., 65, of Waynesville, died Monday, May 17, 2004, at his home. He was born in Macon County on Dec. 4, 1938, to the late Ralph Furman Sr. and Irene McClure Vinson. He retired from Lea Industries. He was preceded in death by one son, Ralph Hugh Vinson; and one sister, Norma Conard. Surviving are his wife, Susie Vinson; one son, Chris Vinson and his wife, Erika, of Asheville; one daughter, Stephanie Conner of Canton; three brothers, John David Vinson of Dover, Tenn., Jack Lee and Tony Vinson, both of Highlands; five sisters, Barbara Webb, Betty Jean Conard and Callie Ruth Lewis, all of Waynesville, Frances Bantam of Taylorsville and Dale McCall of Highlands; five grandchildren, Tasha, Jody, Tenecia, Megan and Leah; and two great-grandchildren, Jonathan and Jordan. Services will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at Garrett Funerals and Cremations. The Rev. Johnny Swanger will officiate. Graveside committal service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Larry W. Lincoln

MAGGIE VALLEY – Larry W. Lincoln, 62, of Maggie Valley, formerly of Michigan, died Monday, May 17, 2004, at the Barbara Ann Karmonos Cancer Institute in Detroit, Mich., after a brief battle with cancer. He was born Nov. 25, 1941, in Duel, Mich., and had resided in Maggie Valley for the past five years. He was a former member of Zion Lutheran Church in Bay City. He was an avid golfer, pilot and fisherman. He loved music, especially playing the guitar and dulcimer. He enjoyed traveling and living in the mountains. He sold real estate and enjoyed working around the house with several remodeling projects. He was preceded in death by his father, Floyd W. Lincoln; and one brother, James E. Lincoln. Surviving are his wife, Vikki A. Lincoln; two daughters, Leslie J. Mahan and Jamie (Andrew) McCombs, both of Royal Oak, Mich.; three grandchildren; his mother, Dollie J. Lincoln of Freeland; one brother, Theodore (Sandy) Lincoln of Freeland; one sister, Sandra (George) Neering of Kawkawlin; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Zion Lutheran Church. The Rev. William H. Allwardt will officiate. Burial will be in Pine Grove cemetery in Freeland. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Cunningham/Taylor Funeral Home, 310 E. Washington, Freeland. Felix H. Frady

CANTON — Felix Herman Frady, 53, of Canton, died Sunday, May 16, 2004, at his residence. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Garrett Funerals and Cremations in Waynesville. Burial will be in Crawford cemetery in Balsam. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Ida Mae Mashburn

Ida Mae Mashburn, 83, of Waynesville, died Thursday, May 20, 2004 at Silver Bluff Nursing Home. She was born March 15, 1921, in Union, S.C., but lived most of her 83 years in Haywood County. She is the daughter of the late Albert and Parice Evans Crayne. She enjoyed her flowers, and she loved to quilt and sew. She loved going to church at Ratcliffe Cove Baptist Church where she was a member and especially enjoyed talking to her pastor, the Rev. Jay Jones. She loved visiting with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, her neighbors and above all she cherished her friends. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Lee Gaddy and Marvin Mashburn; and three brothers, Bob, Charles and Yoder Crayne, all of Waynesville. Surviving are three sons, Chester Gaddy of Idaho, Alva Gaddy and his wife, Marian, of Oregon and Winston Gaddu and his wife, Roberta, of Waynesville; two brothers, J.C. Crayne of Waynesville and Albert Crayne of Tacoma, Wash.; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, at Ratcliffe Cove Baptist Church. The Revs. Jay Jones and Bill Jenkins officiated. Burial was in Ratcliffe Cove cemetery. Pallbearers were Conley Galloway, Wayne Ashe, Sandford Robertson, Wade Francis, Gary Gentry, Ronnie Gillett and Lawrence Davis. Honorary pallbearers were Bill More, Dean Reeves and Weston Gaddy. Claude C. Stamey Jr.

CANDLER — Claude C. “Buster” Stamey Jr., 83, of Old U.S. 19/23, died Saturday, May 22, 2004, at his residence. A native of Asheville, he was a son of the late Claude C. Stamey Sr. and Elsie Jones Stamey. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of VFW Post 3999, Enka Candler Business Association, Snug Harbor, board of directors of Enka Candler Fire Department, Taxpayers for Accountable Government and was a member and deacon of Ridgeway Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Eula Morgan Stamey; a son, Ronald Claude Pete Stamey and his wife, Diane, of Candler; a granddaughter, Monica Lynn Stamey of Candler and her fiancé, Kaleb Rathbone of Fines Creek; two sisters, Helen L. Billy Stamey of Candler and Zilliah Noonie Duckett and her husband, Max, of Canton; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Ridgeway Baptist Church. The Rev. Jack W. Collins will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Wells Funeral Home, Canton. Glen R. White

CANDLER — Glen Ray White, 68, of Candler, died Friday, May 21, 2004, at Mission Hospitals - St. Joseph’s campus in Asheville. He was a native and lifelong resident of Buncombe County and was a son of the late Elmer and Rosa White. He was of the Methodist denomination. He was a retired master logger and enjoyed the great outdoors. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Wayne White and Verner White; and a sister, Lorene Hollifield. Surviving are his wife of 38 years, Joyce Overman White; three daughters, Raynia White of Candler and Patty Grace and Sharon White of Florida; stepdaughter, Tawnia Burrell of Candler; three sons, Courtney White of Canton, Paul White of Elberton, Ga., and Clifford White of Barnardsville; stepson, Douglas Burrell of Asheville; four sisters, Louise Brown, Helen and Bob Jones and Judy and James Shuler, all of Candler, and Sandra and James Davis of Asheville; two brothers, James White of Waynesville and Carroll and Pat White of Candler; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Services were held at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Canton chapel of Wells Funeral Homes and Cremation Services. The Rev. Paul Mullinax officiated. Burial was in Pisgah View Memorial Park in Candler. The family received friends from 2:30 to 3:45 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Susie B. Wilson

CANDLER — Susie Elizabeth Burton Wilson, of Luther Road, died Thursday, May 20, 2004, at Pisgah Manor Nursing Home. She was a native of Clayton, Ga., and was the daughter of the late John and Lillie York Burton. She was the wife of the late, Walter L. Wilson, who died in 2002; and was also preceded in death by a daughter, Rita E. Hyams, who died in 1975; and two sisters, Ruth B. Miller and Flo Holcombe. Surviving are a daughter and her husband, Lillian and Barry Johnson of Raleigh; one son and his wife, W. Rex and Ruby Wilson of Candler; one brother, Sam Burton of Candler; three grandsons, Randy Wilson of Newport, Va., Richard Carroll Wilson of Memphis, Tenn., and Jeremy Johnson of Raleigh; a great-granddaughter, Kinsey Wilson; two step-great-granddaughters; and five step-great-great-grandchildren. Services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church with the Revs. Phillip Hurst and Jack W. Collins officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. The family received friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at Wells Funeral Homes and Cremation Services of Canton. At other times, the family was at the home of the son, 1 White Owl Drive, Candler. Paul E. Gaddis, 77, of Playground Street, Waynesville, died Sunday, May 23, 2004, at Haywood Regional Medical Center. Wells Funeral Homes and Cremations will announce arrangements.

George E. McAlee

George E. McAlee, 80, of 121 Auburn Park Drive, Waynesville, died Sunday, May 16, 2004, at Silver Bluff Nursing Home. His family will celebrate his life and receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 25, at Wells Funeral Homes and Cremation Services of Waynesville.

William H. Green

William Hobert “Billy” Green, 67, of 531 Buck Ridge Road, Waynesville, died Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2004, at Mountain Area Solace Center. A native of Haywood County, he was the son of Ruby Green of the Iron Duff community and the late William Hobert Green. He was a dairy farmer and a member of Antioch Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Virginia Rogers Green. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Nelson Green; two sons, William Stuart Green and his wife, Lisa, and Billy Keith Morrow and his wife, Jamie, both of Iron Duff; three sisters, Kathy Green of Iron Duff, Peggy Sue Parkins of Panther Creek and Ann Jean Plemmons of Brevard; two brothers, Keith Green of Maggie Valley and Kevin Green of Iron Duff; and two grandchildren, Blake and Braden Green. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Antioch Baptist Church with Revs. Ted Reeves, Steve Taylor and Chan Chandler officiating. Burial will follow in Antioch Baptist Church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Max Palmer, Terry Woods, Larry Phillips, Bud Cochran, Joe Chambers and Thad Medford. Bennie Wines will serve as honorary pallbearer. Betty S. Gabruk

CLYDE — Betty Swanger Gabruk, 80, of Mulberry Street, died Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2004, at Haywood Regional Medical Center. A native of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Myra Dillard Swanger. During World War II, she moved to New Jersey to work in defense factories where she met her husband, Joseph A. Gabruk. She and her husband owned and operated several businesses. Upon his death in 1975, she returned to Haywood County. Surviving are one daughter, Karen G. Eckhardt of Dana Point, Calif.; two sons, Kurtis J. Gabruk of Canton, Mich., and Kevin A. Gabruk of Clyde; two brothers, James Swanger of Waynesville and Bud Swanger of Huntersville; two sisters, Wilma Robbins of Waynesville and Frances Tierno of Huntersville; and two grandchildren, Donovan and Gannon Eckhardt. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Rev. Johnny Swanger officiating. Rev. Thomas Whiting

LAKE JUNALUSKA — The Rev. Dr. Thomas Acree Whiting, 87, of Lake Junaluska, died Thursday, Aug. 19, 2004. He was born June 21, 1917 in Camilla, Ga., the son of the late Julian Deming and Kathleen Acree Whiting Sr. He received his bachelor’s degree at Emory University where he was active in the student council, Emory Christian Association, Kappa Alpha Social Fraternity and soloist in the Emory Glee Club and was elected to Omicron Delta Kappa and the Senior Honor Society. He attended Candler School of Theology and Yale Divinity School, from which he received a master of divinity degree. He was awarded an honorary doctor of divinity by Lambuth University. He served as a United Methodist minister from 1944 until his retirement in 1986. He served 21 years in the South Georgia conference at churches in Hiltonia, Meighs-Oclocknee, Ocilla, Jesup, Valdosta and Savannah and was district superintendent of the Macon District; 21 years in the North Georgia Conference at Peachtree Road United Methodist Church in Atlanta, Decatur First United Methodist Church in Decatur and superintendent of the Atlanta-Emory District from which he retired. He moved to Lake Junaluska in 1988 and was active for several years in the First United Methodist Church of Waynesville. He was guest speaker at many United Methodist groups throughout the country. He was the author of several published books and many articles in United Methodist periodicals and other religious publications; delegate to numerous conferences and a member of many committees of the United Methodist Church; visiting professor at Candler School of Theology and active in Kiwanis Clubs. In 1981 he was selected as the United Methodist preacher for the Protestant Radio Hour. After his retirement, he directed fund raising campaigns in churches throughout the Southeast. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Martha Page Whiting; a son, Thomas A. Whiting Jr.; a daughter, Linda Whiting Porter; a son-in-law, Clay Porter; a brother Julian Deming Whiting, Jr.; and two sisters, Rebecca Whiting Jones and Gladys Whiting Glenn. Surviving are his wife, Helen Knarr Thurmond Whiting; a daughter, Dr. Peggy Whiting and her husband, Ben Lancaster of Charlotte; a daughter, Diane Thurmond Lee and her husband, Randy Molner, of Nashville, Tenn.; a son, Gene Thurmond and his wife, Christine, of Eugene, Ore.; grandchildren, Joshua Clayton Porter, Martha Paige Porter, Chamisa Coggins, and Andrew and Nicole Thurmond; and two great-grandsons, Brennan Coggins and Matthew Melton; a brother, George Whiting; sisters, Florence Findlay, Eunice Bryanton, Ruth Culbreth, and Julianne Fish, and extended family, Jay and Jan Porter Orzech, their children, Kelley Palmer, Jennifer Porter, Caroline Porter, Nicole Orzech, and Natalie Orzech. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church of Waynesville. Bishop L. Bevel Jones, the Revs. Drs. John Christy and Garland Young will officiate. The family will receive friends in the narthex following the services. An additional service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday at Patterson’s Arlington Chapel, Atlanta, GA (404) 851-9900. The Rev. Dr. Albert E. Clarke will officiate. Interment will follow at Arlington Memorial Park. The family will receive friends following the committal service at the cemetery. Mary Ruth Wyatt

Mary Ruth Gunter Wyatt, 88, of Waynesville, died Friday, Aug. 13, 2004, at her residence. Born on March 22, 1916, in Stevenson, Ala., she was the daughter of the late James Rufus and Rebecca Gunter. She was a member of Hyatt Creek Freewill Baptist Church and worked in the Waynewood Mattress Factory for many years as a seamstress. She was preceded in death by her husband, John David Wyatt Sr., died in 1986; four sisters, Sallie Esslinger, Annie Mae Green, Bertha Cunningham and Lassie Quinn; and three brothers, James, Jackie and Bobbie Gunter. Surviving are two daughters, Doris (Ralph) McCracken of Crabtree and Peggy (Dwight) Rich of Maggie Valley; one son, John David Wyatt Jr. and his wife, Frances, of Waynesville; four brothers, Jess Ray Gunter of Eustis, Fla. and Joe, John and David Gunter, all of Union County, S.C. ; four sisters, Lena Green of Waynesville and Lucy Clark, Peggy Vaughn and Susan Ward, all of Union County, S.C.; six grandchildren, Claudia Norton, Greg McCracken, Trey Wyatt, Brian Wyatt, Chris Rich and Courtney Presnell; and five great-grand children, Seth, Josie, Olivia, Stahle and Mia. Several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends also survive her. Services were held at 4 p.m. Sunday at Hyatt Creek Freewill Baptist Church. with the Revs. Larry Coates and J.B. Rhinehart officiating and special music by Crystal Wyatt. Burial was in Hyatt Creek cemetery. Pallbearers were Chris Rich, Greg McCracken, Brian Wyatt, Trey Wyatt, Adrian Presnell and Rod Norton. John T. Dingley Jr.

LAKE JUNALUSKA — John Thomas Dingley, Jr., age 77, of 53 White Dogwood Lane, died Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2004, at Haywood Regional Medical Center. A native of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, he grew up in Orlando, Florida and had resided in Minneapolis, Minn., for 22 years prior to living in Haywood County for the past 16 years. He was the son of the late Dr. John Thomas Dingley, Sr. and Doris Lilian Dingley. He attended high school at Du Bose Academy and later graduated from Emory University in Atlanta, Ga. He received his master’s degree from the University of Virginia. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. In 1987, he retired as national sales manager for Sound Products from 3M Company after 25 years. He was a member of Long’s Chapel United Methodist Church where he served as an usher, a former choir member, and was president of the Tullis Sunday School Class. He was a former member of Richfield United Methodist Church in Minneapolis. He enjoyed sailing and woodworking and shared his talents with family and friends. Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Jean Land Dingley; five daughters, Linda Derosier and her husband, Michael of Kettle Falls, Wash., Doris Dingley and her husband, Steve Slostad, of Lakeville, Minn., Clare Strand and her husband, Ray, of Morris, Minn., Joyce Slostad and her husband, Peter, of Champlin, Minn., and Allison Waring and her husband, Robert, of Dumfries, Va.; one son, John Harold Dingley and his wife, Laima, of Richfield, Minn.; one sister, Joyce Dingley Howell and her husband, Arnold, of Orlando, Fla.; and 13 grandchildren, Amy, Laura, Alex, Michael, William, Joshua, Matthew, Elizabeth, Rebecca, Victoria, Lauren, James and Katrina. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 24, at Long’s Chapel United Methodist Church with the Revs. Robert E. Fuquay Jr. and Woody Adams officiating. Helen E. McCracken

HENDERSONVILLE — Helen Elizabeth McCracken, 65, of Hendersonville, died Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2004, at Mission Hospitals from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. She was a native of Haywood County and had been a resident of Buncombe and Hendersonville counties most of her life. She was a daughter of the late Jack and Clara Rogers McCracken. She was employed with Holiday Inn Airport for the past 16 years and was a former member of State Street Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school. She was a member of Ruff Creek Cloggers Square Dancing Team in Haywood County. Surviving are two daughters, Tina M. Angel and Felicia C. Angel, both of Asheville; three sisters, Joan Garland and Patricia Axelrod, both of Haywood County, and Jackie Liner of Hendersonville; three brothers, Donald P. and Neal R. McCracken, both of Haywood County, and Larry McCracken of Maiden; five grandchildren, Stephanie Cogdill, Brandie, Adriene and Mikayla Angel, Tyler Youngblood; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Homes with the Rev. Larry McCracken officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Enka. The family will receive friends from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home prior to the service. At other times, the family will be at the home of her brother, Neal McCracken, 108 Newfound St., Canton.

Lester Trull

CANTON — Lester McKinley Trull, 74, a native of Haywood County, passed away at his home in Las Vegas, July 9, 2004.
He was the son of the late McKinley and Esther Henson Trull of Canton.
He is survived by his wife Barbara of 45 years.
He was the proud father of four daughters and one son, two sisters, Mary Gregg of Clyde and Hazel Hartman of Canton and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Winnie W. Parham

CANTON — Winnie Glenna Willis Parham, died Thursday, Aug. 19, 2004, at Canton Christian Convalescent Center.
Wells Funeral Homes and Cremation Services of Canton is in charge of arrangements.

Maria B. Seixas

Maria Angela Banchieri Seixas, 80, of 318 Violet Ridge Road, Waynesville, died Thursday, Aug. 18, 2004. A native of Feltre, Italy, she had lived in Haywood County since 1976. She was the daughter of the late Alfredo and Dina Dal Covolo Banchieri. She was a nurse at Haywood Regional Medical Center for 15 years. Surviving are a granddaughter, Jan Marie Kroner of Myrtle Beach, S.C. No services are planned. Wells Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Waynesville are in charge of arrangements.
