Lloyd Crawford
SYLVA — Lloyd Crawford, 69, of Sylva, died Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2004, at the Harris Regional Hospital of Sylva. He was born May 3, 1935, to the late Cicero and Myrtle June Robinson Crawford. He enjoyed spending time with his family who he loved dearly. He was a self-employed carpenter for 35 years building homes and commercial businesses. He was preceded in death by one great-grandchild, Ronnie Brian Crawford Jr. Surviving are his loving wife, Carolyn Crawford of 48 years; two sons, Ronnie Crawford and his wife, Edith, of Sylva, and Wayne Crawford and his wife, Tammy, of Cullowhee; his mother-in law, Ruby Ruff of Waynesville; five brothers, Alvin Crawford of Woodruff, S.C., Earl Crawford of Fairview, Roy Crawford of Waynesville, Clyde Crawford of Kings Mountain and Carl Crawford of Woodruff; six sisters, Kathryn Chesney of Woodruff, Evelyn Turpin of Asheville, Ethel Arrington of Waynesville, Harriett Wood of Hampton, Va., Lena Caldwell of Black Mountain and Louise Sutton of Canton; five grandchildren, Tonia Lawrence, Brian Crawford, Teddy Crawford, Brittany Crawford, and Amber LeAnne Crawford; and two great-grandchildren, Logan Lawrence and Isabella Crawford. Services were held at 2 p.m. Friday at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church with the Revs. Earl Holden, Frank Brooks and Dr. Jack Robinson. Burial was in the Crawford Family cemetery. Pallbearers were Richard Ruff, Donald Paris, Brian, Teddy, Marvin and Melvin Crawford, Mike and Tony Dills. The family received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Garrett Funerals and Cremations.
Manuel M. Mull
CANTON — Manuel Monroe Mull, 59, of Canton, died Thursday, Aug. 19, 2004, at his residence. A native of Jackson County, he was the son of the late Ed and Leatha H. Mull. He was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church and worked for Haywood Electric Membership Corp. for more than 35 years. He was preceded in death by one brother, Kenneth Mull. Surviving are two daughters, Leigh Mull Haney and her husband Michael and Julie Mull Mease and her husband, Josh all of Bethel; 10 brothers, Dee and Jerry Mull, both of Cullowhee, Roy Mull of West Asheville, Doyle Mull of Dillsboro, Bruce and Tim Mull, both of Waynesville, Eulis Mull of Hendersonville, Carl Mull of Bethel, Jack Mull of Huntington, Ind., and David Mull of Clyde; four sisters, Wilma Jean Smathers of Canton, Christine Lanning of Roanoke, Va., Breads Jones of Leicester and Linda Warren of Waynesville; four grandchildren, Samantha and Casey Haney, Lane and Hunter Mease. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Garrett Funerals and Cremations with the Rev. Heath Davis officiating. Burial will be in the Balsam Grove cemetery in Caney Fork, Jackson County Nephews will serve as pallbearers. Elna D. Peterson
Elna Dagmar Peterson Ferre, 94, of Waynesville, was born in Quincy, Mass., the daughter of Carl and Elin Peterson. Both her mother and father emigrated from Sweden in the early 1900s. At 19, she married George Forre, a Swedish Baptist pastor and medical student. Soon after they married, they moved to the Hawaiian Isands where George finished his internship and worked as a sugar plantation doctor. After seven years in the islands, the family moved to New Hampshire and then to Florida. After her husband died, she moved to Mississippi to live with her daughter and son-in-law and then moved with them to North Carolina. She had an unfailing sense of humor and was loved by all. She was very active in her church and excelled in creative work. Some of her many interests included needlework, flower arranging, painting, travel, bible study, and chocolate. She and her husband were enthusiastic world travelers. While she lived in Miami she was active in the Miami Woman’s Club the Miami Garden Club and the American Legion Auziliary. A lifelong Baptist, she joined the Presbyterian church when she moved to Waynesville. She was preceded in death by her husband and son, Dr. George A. Ferre. Surviving are her daughter, Barbara, and son-in-law, Marion Phillips, with whom she has made her home in Waynesville; one son, Paul, and his wife, Cindy, who reside in Lilburn, Ga.; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren. Her body will be cremated and buried alongside her husband in Winter Part, Fla. A celebration of her life will be held at 2 p.m. Oct. 2 at Canton Presbyterian Church. The family requests that memorial gifts be given to Hospice. Asheville Mortuary Service is in charge of the arrangements.
James C. Morgan
James Clifton Morgan, 71, of Plott Creek Road, Waynesville, died Monday, Aug. 9, 2004, at Haywood Regional Medical Center. He was a native of Jackson County and lived most of his life in Haywood County. He was the son of the late Jason W. and Ester Cope Morgan. He retired from the maintenance department of the Blue Ridge Parkway Service in 1998 with 18 years of service. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of the Fairview Baptist Church and loved bluegrass music and playing his banjo. He was preceded in death by a sister, Lucille Bumgarner. Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Ollie Mae Jenkins Morgan; two sons, Larry and Garry Morgan, both of Waynesville; two brothers, Clyde Morgan of Sylva and Roy and his wife, Diana, of Darrington, Wash.; four grandchildren, Jamie, Kasey and Ben Morgan, all of Waynesville and Coy Morgan of Greensboro; and two great-grandchildren, Makala Taylor and Trevor Kaslis of Waynesville. Services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Rev. Billy Ferguson officiating. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. military graveside rites were conducted by the American Legion Post 47 and the VFW Post 5202. The men of Morgan’s Adult Sunday School class served as pallbearers. The family received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. At other times, the family was at the residence.
Dr. L. Ann Buntin
HAMILTON, Ohio — Dr. Ann Buntin, 93, of Berkeley Square, died Thursday, June 17, 2004, in Hamilton, Okla. She was born in Lawton, Okla. on October 13, 1910, and was the daughter of John A. and Loa Davis Buntin. She was a graduate of the Oklahoma College for Women. She received her master’s degree from the University of Oklahoma and received her doctorate degree from Columbia University in administration and education. She retired in 1975 as head of the department of home economics at Western Carolina University. She resided in Asheville. She moved to Ohio in 1992. Surviving are one niece, Layne Listerman, and her husband Randall, of Oxford; and one nephew, Floyd Norris and wife, Chris, of Paris, France and New York City. Memorials may be made to the Dr. L. Roe E. Parton
HICKORY — Roe Edward Parton, 76, of Country Valley Road, Hickory, died Monday, Aug. 9, 2004, at Frye Regional Medical Center following a brief illness. He was born on June 8, 1928, in Haywood County to the late Paul Parton and Minnie Moody Parton. He was self-employed as a carpenter and was a member of Gloryland Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Leila Long, Pauline Caver and Verbina Moody Surviving are his former wife, Cathy Parton of Morganton; one son, Keith Parton of Hickory; one daughter, Karron Parton of Waynesville; one stepdaughter, Marleen Freeman of Hickory; one granddaughter, Shelli Parton, one brother, Ray Parton of Maggie Valley; and a number of nieces and nephews. Services will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday at Heritage Funeral Service in Valdese. The Rev. Allen Lane will officiate. Burial will follow in the Brookford cemetery. John W. Carswell
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — John Wallace Carswell, 45, of Knoxville, Tenn., died Sunday, Aug. 8, 2004. He was a 1981 graduate of Carson Newman College having majored in medical technology and he also attended Chilhowee Hills Baptist Church. He was administrator for Quality Home Health, an avid motorcycle rider and a member of The Harley Davidson Owners Group. He was preceded in death by his father, James Wallace Carswell. Surviving are his wife Carol Ann Carswell; one daughter, Jessica Jean Carswell; one son, Matthew Bond Carswell; three stepchildren, Daniel Scott Vick and Dana Michelle Vick; his mother, Frankie Carswell Ratcliffe; sisters and brothers-in-law, Debbie and Scott Davis of Waynesville, Jeanna Carswell and Mark Reasor of Sylva; and niece Lee Ann Davis. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Mynatt Funeral Home with the Rev. Fred Allred officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery. Dorothy L. Rathbone
Dorothy Louise Hall Rathbone, 58, of 415 N. Main St., Waynesville, died Friday, Aug. 6, 2004, at her home. A native of Greenville, S.C., she had resided in Haywood County most of her life. She was the daughter of the late Alex Hall and Lonia Carver Conard. She was a homemaker, a volunteer at the Brian Center and will always be remembered for her kindness and helping others. Surviving are her fiance, Paul Wells of Waynesville; two daughters, Darlene Mack of Canton and Elaine Beck of Tennessee; two sisters, Gladys Hall and Myrtle Mills, both of Waynesville; three brothers, Clifford, Kenneth and Dennis Hall, all of Waynesville; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Services were held at 2 p.m. Monday at Crawford/Ray Funeral Home. The Rev. Mark Caldwell officiated. Burial was in Greenhill cemetery. The family received friends at the funeral home one hour prior to services.
Donald E. Pressley
ASHEVILLE — Donald “Donnie” Eugene Pressley, 57, of 19 Mack’s View Drive, Asheville, died unexpectedly Sunday, July 18, 2004. He was born in Haywood County and was the son of the late Johnny and Ora Lee Pressley. He was a self-employed carpenter. Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth Ann McMahan Pressley; two daughters, Alyson Pressley of Asheville and Jill Pressley Stamey and her husband, Jeff, of Young Harris, Ga.; two stepsons, David Brigman and his wife, Kecia, and Eddie Brigman and his wife, Dale, all of Asheville; six grandchildren, Chelsea Martin and Jala Stamey of Young Harris, and Kyle, Jordan, Kira and Sean Brigman of Asheville; one sister, Betty Birchfield and her husband, Charlie, of Waynesville; and two brothers, Wayne Pressley and his wife, Judy, and Clyde Pressley and his wife, Mary, all of Waynesville. Ella Mae Stiles Medford
JENNINGS, LA - Ella Mae Stiles Medford, age 92, died Tuesday, August 10, 2004, at Jennings American Legion Hospital in Jennings, La. She was a daughter of the late Wilburn Jesse and Kittie Mae Hambre Stiles and the wife of the late Fred W. Medford, who died in 1974. She is survived by one daughter, Nancy Walters of Jennings, La, one son, Howard “Bud” Medford of St. Clair, Mich., one sister, Jean Willis of Canton, four grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 13, 2004, at Oak Grove Baptist Church in Clyde. Rev. Bruce Cayton will officiate with burial following in the church cemetery. Frank R. Henry
ASHEVILLE — Frank Roosevelt Henry, 78, of Asheville, formerly of Spring Creek, passed away Friday, Oct. 8, 2004, in Asheville, at the Mountain Area Hospice Center. He was born on Sept. 30, 1926, in Jackson County, to the late Carey Wesley Henry and Minnie Grasty Henry. Mr. Henry got marred in 1949 to Belva Duckett in Augusta, Ga. They made their home and raised their children in Spring Creek, farming and logging. He enjoyed trout fishing when he got a spare moment. He attended Bethel Baptist Church in Arden. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Lucille Henry and Divola Henry; and six brothers, Gene, Weldon, Carl, Grady, John and Fred Henry. He is survived by his stepmother, Evelyn Caldwell Henry of Fletcher; his wife, Belva Henry of Arden; one son, Phil Henry of Arden; two daughters, Judy and her husband, Hugh Flemming, of Asheville, and Joyce and her husband, Joseph Allison Sr., of Spring Creek; one brother, James Henry of Fletcher; three grandchildren, Greg Shearer, Shawn Shearer and Joseph Harold Allison Jr.; two great-grand children, Nora Mae Allison and Logan Alexander Hopson; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Services were held at 11 a.m. Monday in the chapel of Garrett Funerals and Cremations in Waynesville. Burial was in Greenhill cemetery in Waynesville. The Revs. David Youngblood and James D. CANTON — Dan H. “Mountain Man” Mathis, 77, of the Henson Cove community, Canton, died Sunday, Oct. 10, 2004, after a short illness. A native of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Riley and Hester Davis Mathes. He had retired from Champion International in 1992 after 45 ½ years of service. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Betty Sue Rhinehart Mathis; a daughter, Patty Mathis Moncrief; three sisters, Louise Garnes, Mary Shipman and Hester “Crick” Heatherly; and two brothers, Roy and Richard Mathis. Surviving are three daughters, Linda Gibbs and Gail Norris, both of Harley Creek, and Peggy Phillips and her husband, Doug, of Henson Cove; a son, Danny Mathis and his wife, Angie, of Henson Cove; three sisters, Ruth and Wilcie Smith of Candler and Rosie Gibson of Albertsville, Ala.; and 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Canton chapel of Wells Funeral Homes with the Rev. Kenneth Rhinehart officiating. Burial will follow at New Cruso cemetery. ASHEVILLE — Mildred Mary Inman “Granny Brown” Brown, 83, of 8 Macks View Drive, Asheville, formerly of Edwards Cove, died Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2004, at Haywood Regional Medical Center. She was born on Jan. 5, 1921, to the late Ed and Flonnie Reece Inman in Haywood County. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Isaac Brown; two brothers, Elmer and Rene Inman; two sisters Inez Smith and Pauline Jenkins; and one great-grand daughter, Emmaleigha Brown. Surviving are her daughter, Joyce Brigman, and her husband, Earl, of Asheville; two sons, Carol Ray Brown Sr. and his wife Sandra of Bethel, and William Darryl Brown and his wife Cyndy of Cruso; one brother, J.C. CANTON — Winnie Duke Carter, 100, formerly of 188 Trantham Road, Canton, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004, at Silver Bluff Nursing Home. A native of Carroll County, Ga., she was the daughter of the late William Marion and Katie Lang Duke. She was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church, a cook at Woodfin School and had done mission work all over the county. She was a member of Oak Leaf Chapter 81 of The Eastern Star, drove for Meals on Wheels, was a weaver at Martel Mills and was a former cook for H. G. Bradley and three major restaurants in Asheville. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Melvin Carter, who died in 1939; a daughter, Dorothy Carter Ledford; and sons, Ernest Melvin and William Eugene Carter. Surviving are a daughter, Marion Carter Owenby of Dunn; daughters-in-law, Dorothy Carter of Canton and Leslie Carter of Hayesville; and 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and 15 great-great-grandchildren. Rev. Ralph M. Surrett
CANTON — The Rev. Ralph McKinley Surrett, 90, of Canton, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004, at Silver Bluff Nursing Home. A native of Buncombe County, he was the son of the late William and Leona Sams Surrett and was also preceded in death by two daughters, Linda Trull and Sue Collins. He was a member of Beaverdam Baptist Church and was retired from Champion International with 38 years of service and was a rock mason and sang bass with the Surrett Trio. Surviving are his wife of 73 1/2 years, Nellie Worley Surrett; three daughters, Wilma Freeman, Jean Willis and Grace Chapman, all of Canton; a son, Ralph Surrett Jr. of Canton; two sisters, Elsie Whitsen of Seattle and Inez Worley of Fredericksburg, Va.; a brother, Frank Surrett of Waynesville; and 16 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Beaverdam Baptist Church with the Revs. Gene Worley and Jack Scott officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Lucille C. Ross
TITUSVILLE — Lucille Cruz Ross, 51, of Titusville, died Friday, Oct. 8, 2004. She was devoted to her family and also to her profession. She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. She attended Westside Baptist Church. She was a deputy sheriff for the Brevard County Sheriff’s office, where she was a crime scene investigator. She was a graduate of The National Forensic Academy at The University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Tenn. Surviving are her husband, Frank Ross; two sons, Christian Shane Ross and Aaron Douglas Ross; sisters, Petra, Stephanie and Margaret; and brother, Frankie. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church of Merritt Island. Burial will be at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church. North Brevard Funeral Home in Titusville is in charge of arrangements.
Dr. William Prevost
Dr. William Sidney “Bill” Prevost Jr., 65, of Country Club Drive, Waynesville, died Thursday, Oct. 14, 2004, at Mission Hospitals. He was a native of Haywood County and was the son of the late and William Sidney Prevost Sr. and Mary Hill “Pat” Prevost. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Ross Cain Prevost. He graduated from Waynesville Township High School in 1956 and was a graduate of the University of North Carolina’s School of Dentistry in Chapel Hill. Known by his patients as “Dr. Drill,” he was a general dentist in private practice in Waynesville for 35 years. He was an Eagle Scout with Waynesville’s Troop 318 of the Boy Scouts of America, later serving as Scoutmaster of that same Troop. He served on Hazelwood’s Board of Aldermen and was an early advocate of that town’s merger with Waynesville. He was a member of Grace Episcopal Church and the Waynesville Rotary Club and served on the Haywood County Council on Aging and the Community Foundation of Western North Carolina. Surviving are his wife of 42 years, Rebecca Howell Prevost; two sons, William Sidney Prevost III of Los Angeles and Thomas Ruffin Prevost and his fiancée, Michele Hudson, of Cody, Wyo.; one sister, Susan Prevost Clarke and her husband, Ron, of Jacksonville, Fla.; and one brother, Thomas Hill Prevost and his wife, Cecile, of Santa Maria, Calif. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday at Grace Episcopal Church in the Mountains with the Rev. Tim McRee officiating. A private interment service will be held in the church memorial garden. The family will receive friends from 3:30 to 4 p.m. prior to the service in the parish hall of the church.
