Herbert H. Tate

Herbert Hershel “Hub” Tate, 85, of Shelton Street, Waynesville, died Saturday, Oct. 16, 2004. at the VA Medical Center in Asheville. He was a native of Haywood County and was the son of the late Glenn and Oberia Bryson Tate. He was a self-employed farmer. He was a U.S. Army veteran having served during World War II in Normandy, and received the Purple Heart. He was a member of the VFW Waynesville Post 5202 and American Legion Post 47, and was a member of the Disabled American veterans. He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathryn Tate, who died in 1996; and by two brothers, Harmon and Wallace Tate. Surviving are a daughter, Teresa Glance and her husband, Bill, of Clyde; a son, Jim Tate and his wife, Cathy, of Granbury, Texas; a sister, Edith Milner and her husband, Ray, of Waynesville; a brother, Harley Tate and his wife, Eva, of Hendersonville; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be held at 7 p.m. Monday in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Homes and Cremation Services. The Rev. Steve Taylor will officiate. military services will be conducted by the VFW Post 5202 and American Legion Post 47. Burial will be in Antioch Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends following the services, at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Antioch Baptist Church Building Fund, 542 Iron Duff Road, Waynesville, NC 28785.

Howard E.Campbell

MAGGIE VALLEY — Howard Edsel Campbell, 84, died Sunday, Oct. 17, 2004, at his residence. He originally lived in Garden City, Mich., and attended Fordson High School in Dearborn. After graduation, he attended Eastern Michigan University where he met his future wife, Barbara Hayes. They celebrated their 62nd anniversary this past January. Howard served in the U.S. Navy during World War II on the USS Lenoir, and then returned to work for the Ford Motor Co. in Dearborn, Mich. After 36 years he retired as a financial analyst and moved to Maggie Valley. Golf was his favorite recreation, but he was active in many local affairs. He was treasurer and road chairman for the Home Owners Association, delivered Meals on Wheels, and more recently was treasurer of the Jane Marville Junior Golf Tournament. His great gift was his voice. Surviving are his wife, Barbara Hayes Campbell; his daughter, Deborah Tucker of Richmond, Va.; two sons, Douglas Campbell of Chicago, Ill. and Dennis Campbell of Frankfort, Mich.; two sisters, Betty Phipps of Inglewood, Fla., and Arleen Smith of Sarasota, Fla.; his brother, Don Campbell of Maggie Valley, NC; seven grandchildren, and three great-grandsons. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Maggie Valley United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jeremy I. Troxler officiating. A reception will follow in the fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Maggie Valley United Methodist Church, 4192 Soco Road, Maggie Valley, NC 28751; or to the Haywood County Rescue Squad, P.O. Mary V. Jones

CANTON — Mary Ann Valentine Jones, 82, of Canton, died Thursday, Oct. 14, 2004, at Haywood Regional Medical Center. She was a native of Cocke County, Tenn., and had been a resident of Haywood County most of her life. She was a daughter of the late Samual and Essie Jones Valentine. She was of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis David Jones, who died in 1974; a grandson, George Lewis David Clontz, who died in 1963; two brothers, John Taylor and Jess Lackey; two sons-in-law, Forrest Russell and Randy Burns. Surviving are five daughters; Ernestine Clontz and her husband George, Edna Russell, Christine Jones, Joyce Burns and Doris Lanning and her husband, Ronnie, all of Canton; one son, Johnny David Jones and his wife, Karen, of Canton; one brother, Milburn “Bud” Valentine of Arden; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews and a special friend and neighbor, Dorothy Justice. Services were held at 2 p.m. Monday in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Homes and Cremation Services with the Revs. Stacy Woods, Winfred Bennett and Steve Miller officiating. Burial was in Center Pigeon Baptist Church cemetery. Pallbearers were Sam, David and Jonathan Goodson, Chad and Alan Ballew, Justen Holcombe, John and Josh Jones; all of which are grandchildren. Reva E. Chastain

CANTON — Reva Evans Chastain, born on April 3, 1929, died Saturday, Oct. 16, 2004, at Laurels of Greentree Ridge in Asheville following a brief illness. She was a native and lifelong resident of Haywood County and the daughter of the late Judson A. and Beulah Mason Evans. She was a nurse at Haywood Regional Medical Center for a number of years until her retirement. She was a member of West Canton Baptist Church and the Good Life Club. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gentry O. “Harold” Chastain, who died in 1988; a brother, Albert M. Evans; a sister, Reba Evans Saunders; and her stepmother, Sally Hendrix Evans. Surviving are a sister, Dorothy Evans Clark of Lenoir; several nieces and nephews;and a special sister-in-law, Betty Evans of Canton. Service were held at 11 a.m. Monday at West Canton Baptist Church with the Revs. James Huey and Wallace Britt officiating. Burial was in Pisgah View Memorial Park. The family received friends from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. prior to the services at the church. At other times, the family was at 1140 Groundhog Road, Canton. Brenda S. Troutman

CANDLER — Brenda Smathers Troutman of Candler died Saturday, Oct. 16, 2004, at Mission Hospitals. She was born in Haywood County to the late Robert Ray Smathers and Decie Hill Smathers of Waynesville. Surviving are her husband, James Mike Troutman of Candler; daughter, Angela Broadhead of Greer, S.C.; son, Michael Keith Troutman of Boiling Springs, S.C.; four grandchildren, Christopher Broadhead, Marrah Kaley Troutman, Aaron Michael Troutman and Bryn Sadie Troutman; brother, Dennis Smathers and two sisters, Mary Lou Grasty and Frieda Medford, all of Waynesville. The graveside memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Greenhill cemetery in Waynesville. The Revs. Ben Thomas and Ralph Brown will officiate. Elsie Mae C. Mullins

MAGGIE VALLEY — Mae Clark Mullins, 47, died Thursday, Oct. 14, 2004, in Cheyenne, Wyo. She was a native of Haywood County and was the daughter of Jess B. “Benny” Clark of Canton and Ruth Stepp Jones of Waynesville. She was preceded in death by a brother, Jess Randy Clark. She was a team driver with her husband at Turner Trucking for 5-1/2 years. She was a member of Liberty Missionary Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school, and sang gospel music with her husband. She loved being with her family, grandchildren, and her two Yorkies, Coco and Lucky. In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband of 13 years, Joe Mullins; two daughters, Jenny Young, of the home, and Tammy Walker and her husband, Mark, of Canton; one sister, Shirley Phillips and her husband, Hugh, of Waynesville; one brother, Carter Henry Clark of Waynesville; and three grandchildren, Kyree Moore, Cedric Young and Kiara Walker. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Homes and Cremation Services. The Revs. Jerry Nelson, Phillip Wyatt and Charlie Creasman will officiate. Burial will follow at Riverside cemetery. Pallbearers will be Henry Clark, Mark Walker, Daniel Clark, Hugh Phillips, Joe Mullins, Seth Hicks, Bill Owenby and Fred Flemmings. Nola M. Conard

Nola M. Conard, 100, of Waynesville, passed away Monday, Nov. 29, 2004, at Harris Regional Medical Center. She was born Sept. 4, 1904, in Mount Sterling, Tenn., to the late James Riley and Jeanette Gates McGaha. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert Henry Conard, who passed away in 1988; one daughter, Della Brackett, two sons, Hollis Conard and Pless White, three brothers Frank, Cass and Arlin McGaha; five sisters, Grace Cope, Callie Knight, Clercy Brown, Truly Harveson and Annie Mathis; and two grandchildren, Bobbie Jean Nations and Rachel Conard. Surviving are two sons, Tommy Conard and James Robert Conard and his wife, Betty, all of Waynesville; three daughters, Louise Clontz and her husband, Elmer, of Canton, Sara Nelson and her husband, Don, of Waynesville, and Addie Conard of Waynesville; 33 grandchildren; 74 great-grandchildren; and 21 great-great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday with the Revs. Jerry Nelson and Frank Wyatt officiating. Burial was in Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be James Queen, Steve Goodson, Gary Seay, Ken Jarrell, Charlie Austin, Billy Barker, Shane Conard and William Phillips Granddaughters will serve as honorary pallbearers. Merle C. Heckard

LAKE JUNALUSKA — Merle Carpenter Heckard, 87, died Sunday, Nov. 28, 2004, at her residence. She was born in Rutherford County in Cliffside and was the daughter of the late John Crawford and Nola Mamie Smart Carpenter. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Waynesville. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was educated in the public schools of Cliffside and a graduate of Asheville Normal and Teachers College. She did graduate work at UNC-Greensboro, Queens College in Charlotte, and Lenoir Rhyne College in Hickory. She was an elementary school teacher and taught in schools in Western North Carolina Children’s Home, Winston-Salem, Granite Falls, Marion, Albemarle, Hickory and at Lake Junaluska where she lived since her husband's death. She was very supportive of her husband’s ministry wherever he served, in addition to being a leader in civic, community and church affairs, which she continued after her retirement. She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Dr. Cecil L. Heckard, who died in 1975. Dr. Heckard served as a chaplain in the U.S. Fifth Air Force during World War II and as a minister and a district superintendent in the Western North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church. Also preceding her in death are a son, William Crawford Heckard, who died in 1948; a daughter, Linda Merle Heckard Guthrie Hofmann, who died in 2000; and her brother, James Leburn Carpenter, who died in 2002. Surviving are a sister, Erlene Hicks and her husband, Walter L., of Greenville, S.C.; two grandchildren, Mark Lynnwood Guthrie and his wife, Robin, of Maryland, and Alison Elizabeth Guthrie Dowla and her husband, Jim, of Maryland; and four great-grandchildren, Travis Allen Guthrie, Meagan Hahn Guthrie, Macy Linda Dowla and Hayden Guthrie Dowla. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church of Waynesville. The Revs. Drs. W. Lyn Sorrells, John Christy, J. Clay Madison and Thomas R. Sigmon will officiate. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville where the body will remain until placed in the church one hour prior to the service. A committal service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Gaston Memorial Park, Gastonia. Winnie P. Yeaman

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Winnie Paxton Yeaman died Saturday, Nov. 20, 2004, at Westminster Canterberry in Charlottesville, Va., after a period of declining health. She was born Dec. 31, 1922 in Canton, to the late G.C. and Annie Jones Paxton. She furthered her education at Baroness Erlanger School of Nursing in Chattanooga, Tenn., making the second highest on the national exam. She then attended Duke University graduating from the Anesthesia School. She accepted a position in Atlanta, Ga. at Crawford W. Long Hospital as chief anesthetist. She worked there for nine years and served as president of the State Anesthetist Association before moving to Charlottesville. She worked at the University Medical Center for 22 years before her retirement. She was an active nurse practitioner in anesthesiology for more than 40 years. She and her husband were avid sports fans of the university, especially basketball and football, attending most of their games and traveled long distances to their tournaments. She loved music and sang in the choir at Meadows Presbyterian Church where she was a member. She with her husband held season tickets to the Charlottesville Symphony for 30 years. Research into her family genealogy was extensive. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, William, Wallace, Roy, Joseph Burlin “Buzz;” and sisters, Louise and Katrina. Surviving are her loving husband, James H. Yeaman; sisters, Annie Pace and her husband, Joe, of Clyde, Thomasine Harkins and her husband, Bill, of Canton, and Josephine Green and her husband, Horace, of Lake Junaluska; two sister-in-laws, Lillie Paxton of Canton and Jeannie Paxton of Texas; as well as several nieces and nephews. Services were held Monday in Charlottesville at the Meadows Presbyterian Church with the the Rev. Tom Goodrich officiating. Pallbearers were Mark White, Laurence Petit, Gus Hamre, Robert Cooper, Finis Carrel and Michael Atchison. Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the family plot at Locust Field cemetery in Canton with the Rev. Jimmy Huey officiating. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Research Center, 22515 Gateway Drive, P.O. Box 1950, Clarksburg, MD 20871-1950. Hill and Wood of Charlottesville, Va., and Wells Funeral Home of Canton were in charge of arrangements. A memorial service will be held at a later date at Westminster Canterberry in Charlottesville, Va. where she and her husband have resided for the last five years.

Elsie Mackey

MARTIN, Ga., — Elsie Mackey, 86, of Route 3, Martin, Ga., died Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2004, at Stephens County Hospital. Born Sept. 24, 1918, in Spartanburg County, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Samuel Marvin and Elsie Davis Layton. She was a retired communications manager with the U S. Government. She was a member of Grace Methodist Church. Surviving are her husband, Kenneth Mackey; a son and daughter-in-law, Alex and Teresa Mackey of Kennesaw, Ga.; a brother, Samuel Marvin Layton of Monroe; two sisters, Mary Layton Parker of Spartanburg, S.C., and Margaret Layton Baltezgar of Wilmington; and three grandchildren, Allison, Andrew and Chandler Mackey. A graveside service will be held later in Haywood County. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the church or charitable organization of one’s choice. Whitlock Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Dennis C. Morgan

IVERNESS, Fla. — Dennis C. Morgan, 55, of Inverness, Fla., died Thursday, Nov. 25, 2004, in Inverness. He retired as the service manager of Nick Nicholas Ford after 25 years. He came to Iverness from Leesburg, Fla., 25 years ago. He was born in Waynesville Feb. 11, 1949, to Leeman and Juanita Morgan. He attended Forty Cooper Baptist Church in Inverness. Surviving are his wife of 39 years, Linda Crawford Morgan; son, Dean Coleman and his wife, Karin, of Fort Lauderdale; daughter, Kimberly Dawn Wade and her husband, David, of Ocala, Fla.; mother, Juanita Mathis Morgan of Clyde; two sisters, Gloria Pace and Tryllis Autrey, both of Clyde; three granddaughters, Morgan Ashley Wade of Ocala, and Chloe Elise and Krista Elizabeth Morgan of Fort Lauderdale. The service of remembrance was held at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Inverness Chapel of Hooper Funeral Homes. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Citrus County or the American Cancer Society.

Martha B. White

AMERICUS, Ga. — Martha Best White, 88, of South Lee Street in Americus, Ga., died Monday, Nov. 29, 2004, at Magnolia Manor Nursing Home in Americus. She was a native of Haywood County and was a daughter of the late T. Dave and Argyle Hall Best. She retired from Columbus College in Columbus, Ga., in 1988 and was a lifelong Methodist. She was preceded in death by four sisters and one brother. Surviving are three sons, J. Samuel White of Columbus, Ga., John G. White of Thomasville, Ga., and Jack H. White of Perry, Ga.: two sisters, Jeanerette B. Fraske of Greenville, S.C., and Delorese Best of Canton; nine grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Canton chapel of Wells Funeral Homes and Cremation Services. The Rev. Carrol Lindsey will officiate. Burial will follow in Plains United Methodist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 to 1:45 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the sister, Delorese Best, 130 Academy St., Canton. Memorials may be made to one’s favorite charity.

Annie S. Downs

Annie Jane Silvers Downs, 43, of the Iron Duff community, died Sunday, Nov. 28, 2004, at the Tsali Health Care Center. She was a native of Haywood County and was the daughter of the late Melvin and Myrtle Price Silvers. She enjoyed reading and cooking and was a member of Antioch Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Downs. Surviving are her sister, Essie Smith of Waynesville; and a stepmother, Nettie Frizzell Silvers of Clyde. Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Antioch Baptist Church cemetery with the Revs. Jerry Nelson and Steve Taylor officiating. Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville was in charge of arrangements.

Iola R. Hance

Iola Rhinehart Hance, 66, of Waynesville, passed away Saturday, Nov. 27, 2004, at her residence. She was born July 17, 1938, to the late Derry and Gurley Sitton Rhinehart. She worked as a tomato packer and was a member of Rocky Branch Freewill Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hobert Hance, who passed away in 1993; one daughter, Edith Ellen Gaddis; and one stepson, Larry Hance. Surviving are one daughter Judy Meeks of Hazelwood; two stepsons, Jerry Hance of Georgia and Gary Allen of Georgia; three brothers, Sam Rhinehart of Hazelwood, Robert and Mike Rhinehart, both of Clyde; six sisters, Eva Williams and Georgia Early, both of Hazelwood, Sally Brown of Missouri, and Mary Phillips, Gladys Dills and Patricia Mull, all of Waynesville; eight grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Garrett Funerals and Cremations with the Revs. J.B. Rhinehart, Kenneth Rhinehart and Steve Rhinehart officiating. Burial was in Greenhill cemetery. Pallbearers were Jerry Meeks, Shawn and Brian Aldridge, Steve and Derry Rhinehart, Anthony Mathis, and Ralph Wyatt. T. Ora Shipman

CANTON — Thomas Ora Shipman, 92, died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, at Silver Bluff Nursing Home. He was a native and lifelong resident of Haywood County and the son of the late, Mark L. and Julie Pressley Shipman. He retired with 22 years of service from Champion International and prior to that was an independent bus driver for Champion employees. He was a faithful member of Springhill Baptist Church, where he served as an usher for 30 years. He also served as a bus driver for Springhill Church. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mae Cook Shipman, who died in 1985; two brothers, Vanis and Vinson Shipman; and three sisters, Bertie Bolden, Viola Wilson and Minnie Hyde. Surviving are his wife of 19 years, Myrtle Maney Blankenship Shipman of Canton; two daughters, Brenda Heeg and her husband, Ed, of Asheville and Phillis Earley and her husband, Bob, of Fairview; a stepdaughter, Marie Tripplett of Yorktown, Va.; a stepson, John Blankenship and his wife, Vernile, of East Flat Rock; two sisters, Veldia Biddix of Candler and Lydia Rogers of Canton; a brother, Arthur Shipman of Canton; four grandchildren, Lisa Conard and her husband, Rick, of Candler, Kyle Sharp and his wife, Reba, of Asheville, Kristi Shelton and her husband, Chuck, of Candler and Gavin Nelson of Asheville; and several great-grandchildren and step-grandchildren. Services will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Canton chapel of Wells Funeral Homes and Cremation Services. Burial will follow at Springhill Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2:45 to 3:45 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the residence on Jeffrey Lane in Canton. Burder J. Wells

CANTON — Burder Jule Wells, 97, of 16 White Oak Ridge, Canton, passed away Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, at Silver Bluff Village. A lifelong resident of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Jessie L. and Elizabeth Ann Reeves Wells. Mr. Wells retired from Champion Paper as a maintenance supervisor in 1972 with 40 years of dedicated service. For more than 25 years he was closely associated with the Champion Employee Christmas Basket program and the Canton Community Christmas Tree party. He served as the chairman of the Christmas party event for a number of years which provided lunch for hundreds of underprivileged who attended the annual Christmas party. Wells served as chairman of the Haywood County Democratic party and also a precinct chairman. He had a great concern for his community and was instrumental in the upgrading of the roads and schools for the people of Haywood County. He was a member of the Haywood Board of Health for nine years and played an important role in the improvement of health care for the children of Haywood County. Mr. Wells was a member of Longs United Methodist Church where he taught the adult and men’s Sunday school classes for more than 25 years. He served as a lay leader and lay speaker, was chairman of the board of trustees, and was a member of the administrative board. In 1970 he was chosen as Kiwanis “Man of the Year” for his devotion to the community and church. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed spending time at Lake Chatuge and Lake Santeelah. He was also a fox, dear and bear hunter. His loving devotion to his family and the care and concern which he always showed to others will always be a blessing to those who knew him. He was preceded in death by his wife of 72 years, Bonnie Murray Wells, who passed away in 1997; sons, Jimmy and Ted Wells; grandson, Pete “Pedie” Wells; and brothers, Millard “Bill” Wells, Reagan Wells, Garland Wells, Ben Wells, and Harley and Leander Wells. Surviving are his daughter, Bonnie Moon and her husband, Arthur, of Waynesville; sons, William “Bill” Wells and his wife, Carol, of North Wilkesboro and Southport and Ned Wells of Canton; sister-in-laws, Florence Wells and Mable Wells; 12 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Abe H. Amos

CANTON — Abe H. Amos, 95, formerly of Canton, died Friday, Jan. 7, 2005, at his daughter’s residence in Richmond, Va. Wells Funeral Homes and Cremations Services of Canton will announce arrangements.

H. Vaughn Palmer

H. Vaughn Palmer, 102, of 163 Dayton Drive, Waynes-ville, died Friday, Jan. 7, 2005, at Haywood Regional Medical Center. He was a native of Haywood County and was born and raised on Cataloochee. He was the son of the late William and Eleanor Noland Palmer. He was the owner and operator of Palmer Bus Lines for 40 years and Palmer Service Station for 30 years. After retirement, he enjoyed trading and transporting cattle. He was a member of New Hope Church of God. He was preceded in death by his wife, Magola Caldwell Palmer, who died in 2000; a son, William Edward Palmer; three sisters, Josie Palmer, Lavada Jaynes and Eulala Caldwell; and four brothers, Vinson, Vernon, Arlo and Kimsey Palmer. Surviving are his daughter, Eunice Palmer of Waynesville; his son, the Rev. J. Harold Palmer and his wife, Geretha, of Roxboro; and three grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren. Services were held at 2 p.m. Monday at New Hope Church of God, where the body was placed one hour prior to the services. The Rev. Steve Anderson, Alan Greene and Jeffrey Palmer officiated. Burial was in Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. Pallbearers were Nolan Palmer, Dennis Caldwell, James Walker, Bill Horton, Danny Maney and Jeffrey Palmer. Honorary pallbearers were Harry Valentine, Robert Russell, B.J. Mehaffey and the men of New Hope Church of God. The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the church. At other times, the family was at the residence. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the New Hope Church of God, 24 Hallelujah Drive, Waynesville, NC 28786. Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services of Waynesville is in charge of arrangements.

Janis D. McCarley

WILMINGTON — Janis Duckworth McCarley of Wilmington, died Thursday, Nov. 25, 2004, at her home. She was born on Dec. 19, 1943, in Canton, the daughter of the late James T. and Hazel S. Duckworth. She was a loving wife and mother. She enjoyed growing beautiful flowers and plants for her yard, and also raising and releasing Monarch butterflies in the fall of the year. Surviving are her husband of 39 years, Alexander Oldham McCarley; three sons, Alexander Oldham McCarley Jr. of New Bern, James Duckworth McCarley and his wife, Rachel, and Daniel McEachern McCarley, all of Wilmington; a sister, Nancy Lee Tilley and her husband, Donald; and a niece, Donna Hales, all of Durham. A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 28, 2004, at Andrews Mortuary, Market Street Chapel with the Rev. John C. Drewry officiating. The family received friends from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 27, 2004, at the residence. In lieu of flowers, memorials gifts may be made to the Sjogrens Foundation, Inc., 8120 Woodmont Ave., Suite 530, Bethesda, MD 20814-1437; or to The Lower Cape Fear Hospice and Life Care Center, 14060 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC 28401.

B.C. Collins

Bunyan C. “B.C.” Collins, 86, formerly of Allens Creek, died Friday, Jan. 7, 2005, at Haywood Regional Medical Center. He was a native of Madison County and had resided in Haywood County for 71 years. He was the son of the late Hobert and Nellie Fisher Collins. He and his wife were the owners and operators of The Bird Cage for 26 years. He was a member of Allens Creek Baptist Church. He enjoyed vacationing in Florida. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy May Dailey Collins, who died in 1992; and by two brothers, Howard and Glen Collins. Surviving are his son, Bill Collins and his wife, Elizabeth, of Cleveland; two sisters, Mary Hugo and Mildred Caldwell; one brother, Hobert “Wick” Collins, all of Waynesville; two grandchildren, Linda Wood and Lisa Collins; and two great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Homes and Cremation Services with the Revs. Lloyd Fish and Rex Collins officiating. Burial will follow at Greenhill cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Raymond E. Fredrick, 88, of White Oak Road, Waynesville, died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, at his residence.

Jerry A. Nichols Sr.

Jerry Allred Nichols Sr., 66, of Waynesville, passed away Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, at the Haywood Regional Medical Center of Waynesville. He was born on May 8, 1938, to the late Ed and Klinworth Allred Nichols. He was a dedicated coach for many years for the Lake Junaluska youth league and Waynesville middle league basketball teams. He enjoyed camping, fishing and working on cars. He also worked at the American Enka Co. for several years. Surviving are one son, Jerry A. Nichols Jr. and his wife, Sandy, of Waynesville; one daughter, Debbie Beasley and her husband, Malcom, of Waynesville; two brothers, Henry Nichols of Shelby and Tommy Nichols of Waynesville; two sisters, Amelia Turnage of Newport News, Va., and Dicky Larea Sutton of Lake Junaluska; five grandchildren, Patrick Nichols, Josh Nichols, Jody Nichols, Melanie Beasley Sosa and Samantha Beasley; several nieces and nephews. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel of Garrett Funerals and Cremations. The family will receive friends from noon until the time of service on Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Waynesville First Responders, 21 S. Main St., Waynesville, NC 28786; or Haywood County EMS, 215 N. Main St., Waynesville, NC 28786. Stephen N. Coci CLYDE — Stephen N. Coci, 56, of Grey Fox Trail, died Friday, Jan. 7, 2005 at his residence. He was a native of New Orleans, La., having resided in Florence, S.C., before moving to Haywood County in October 2001. He was the son of the late William and Mary Kipper Coci. He was a computer programmer in the mortgage industry and was a member of Fines Creek Memorial Baptist Church. He enjoyed short wave radio, carpentry, hiking and he loved his dogs. Surviving are his wife of 29 years, Christine Coci; his mother-in-law, Sylvia Gudan of Metairie, La.; his sister, Phyllis Fitch of Kenner, La.; and many brothers and sister-in-laws, nieces and nephews. At the request of the family, no services are planned. Memorials may be made to Haywood Animal Welfare Association, P.O. Box 992, Waynesville, NC 28786.
