Georgia D. Price

ASHEVILLE — Georgia Davis Price, of 917 Rockhold Drive in Asheville, died on Friday, Feb. 25, 2005, at Mountain Area Hospice Solace in Asheville following an extended illness.

She was born on June 4, 1925, in the Cove Creek community of Haywood County. She was the daughter of the late Hobart Davis and Gaye Crawford Davis. She was the granddaughter of th”" Davis and Georgia Noland Davis, and Erastus and Jenettia Medford Crawford. She was the proud namesake of her grandmothers. She was a member of Sunrise Baptist Church in Asheville and a graduate of Crabtree-Iron Duff School.

In 1996, The Institute at Biltmore was first established at Mars Hill College in her honor and in memory of her late husband, Jack Ray.

She was preceded in death by her husbands Jack Ray, who died in 1969; and Milton Price, who died in 1989; a brother, Joe Burnette Davis, who died in 1949, and a grandchild, Russell Jack Ray, who died in 1970.

Surviving are two sons, Ronald Dale Ray, and his wife Paula, of Hendersonville, and Dan Keith Ray of Asheville; one brother, Maxwell D. Davis of Iron Duff; grandchildren, Rhonda Etheredge, and her husband, Mark, of Ozark, Ala., Ricky, Vicky and Miranda of Phenix City, Ala., and Paul Edward of Hendersonville; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home. Burial will follow at the Antioch Baptist Church cemetery on Iron Duff Road in Haywood County. The Revs. William Higgins and Ted Reeves will officiate. The eulogy will be delivered by Sharon Allred Decker, chair of the board of directors of The Institute at Biltmore.

Graveside services will be conducted by the Rev. Steve Taylor of Antioch Baptist Church. Honorary pallbearers include members of the board of directors, special friends, and staff of the Institute at Biltmore, Sharon Allred Decker, John F.A.V. Cecil, Bart Fisher of Washington, D.C., Louis Bissette, James Daniels, Dr. A. Max Lennon, Glen Wilcox Sr., Alan Oocumma, Richard Vander Veen of Grand Rapids, Mich., Warren Riley of Los Angeles, Cali., Mack B. Pearsall, Ashby Brunson, Janette Harvey, Robert Goodale of Raleigh, Dr. Marianne Soufas and Myra Goodwin.

Pallbearers include her dear friends, Tim Welch, Michael Williams, Matthew Clark, Christopher Mello, Fred Friedman and Robert G. Miller of Greenville, S.C., Ernie Howard of Ajijic, Mexico, and Cameron Delancey of Washington, D.C.

The family will receive visitors at the funeral home from 1 to 2:45 p.m. At other times the family, will be at the residence of Dan Keith Ray, 400 Sunrise Summit in Asheville.

Memorials may be made to the Jack Ray and Georgia Davis Price Fund, c/o One West Pack Square, Suite 1505, Asheville, NC 28801; or to the Building Fund of the Antioch Baptist Church, 542 Iron Duff Road, Waynesville, NC 28785.

Randall J. Conklin

MAGGIE VALLEY — Randall James Conklin, 83, of 115 Reuben Branch Road, Maggie Valley, died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2005, at Canton Christian Convalescent Nursing Home.

A native of Newark, N.J., he was the son of Randall William and Harriet Patrick Teelin Conklin. He graduated from Asbury Park High School and was a veteran of World War II. He was made a Deacon in Trinity Church, Asbury Park, N.J., in April 1950 and received his bachelor’s degree from Rutgers University and his Masters of Divinity from Philadelphia Divinity School in 1950. Following his ordination in 1950, he assumed his pastoral duties at St. John’s Church in Maple Shade, N.J. He became the Rector of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Beverly, N.J., in 1956. He served in a multitude of ecclesiastical capacities which included acting as supply priest for Grace Church in Merchantville, N.J., and St. John’s in Maple Shade, the interim rector of Holy Trinity in Delair, and many years of devotion as chaplain and instructor of Religion at St. Mary’s Hall/Doane Academy in Burlington, N.J. He also enjoyed many years of teaching at The Girls’ Summer Conference in Asbury Park, N.J. The Right Rev. Alfred L. Banyard bestowed the title of Canon upon him in 1968. He was a life member of the American Legion NJ W.A. Cortright, Jr. Post O115, Beverly N.J., and the Beverly Fire Co. No. 1.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Harriet MacBeth of England; and a brother, Walter W. Conklin of Sarasota, Fla.

Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Anne Cottrell Conklin; a daughter, Claudia A. Raber and her husband, Robert, of Maggie Valley; a sister, Ruth Hummel of Whiting, N.J.; five grandchildren; seven great- grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at noon Wednesday at Grace Church in the Mountains of which he was a member. The Rev. Dr. Howard White Jr. Rector will officiate.

The family will receive friends following the committal in the parish hall.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Grace Church in the Mountains, 394 North Haywood Street, Waynesville, NC 28786; or St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, Beverly, NJ or St. Mary’s Hall/Doane Academy in Burlington, NJ.

Harvey E. Budkie Jr.

Harvey Edward Budkie Jr., 78, of 241 Spirit Mountain Trail, Waynesville, died Sunday, Feb. 27, 2005, at Haywood Regional Medical Center.

He was born in Cincinnati, and was the son of the late Harvey E. Budkie Sr. and Irene Blattner Budkie. He was a retired sergeant and a major with Army and had served during World War II and the Korean War. He also had tours of duty in Austria and Germany and retired at Fort Jackson, S.C. Following his retirement, he was a ROTC instructor at Camden High School in Camden, S.C., for 14 years. He had resided in Haywood County since 1990. He was preceded in death by a son, Joey Budkie, who died in 1991.

Surviving are his wife of 25 years, Myong Yu Budkie; daughter, Barbara Coleman of Columbia, S.C.; two stepdaughters, Kellie Williamson of Irmo, S.C., and Bambi Davis of Columbia, S.C.; two sons, Eric Budkie and Geoffrey Budkie, both of Columbia, S.C.; sister, Carolyn Sylvia Cassel of Cincinnati; and six grandchildren.

Services will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Homes and Cremation Services. The Rev. Eddie Dietz will officiate. Burial will follow in the veteran’s section of Greenhill cemetery with military graveside rites.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 4 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Ethel M. Buchanan

Ethel McKee Buchanan, 76, of 1166 Allens Creek Road, Waynesville, died Saturday Feb. 26, 2005, at her residence.

She was a daughter of the late Cortland and Trula Griffith McKee and had been a resident of Waynesville for the last 50 years. She was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.

Surviving are her husband of 49 years, William “Bud” Buchanan; two daughters, Gloria B. Marsh and her husband, Phil, of Camden, S.C., and Beth “Babbie” Mangum and her husband, Dwayne, of Charleston, S.C.; one son, Tim Buchanan and his wife, Dawn, of Waynesville; three sisters, Mary Powers and Julia Overmyer, both of Culver, Ind., and Anna Belle Fisher of Bremen, Ind.; two brothers, Don McKee of Nappanee, Ind., and Vern B. McKee of Culver, Ind.; six grandchildren, Billy Marsh of Travelers Rest, S.C., Dawn Marsh of Camden, Amanda and Andrea Mangum, both of Charleston, and Rachel and Sara Buchanan, both of Waynesville.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Homes and Cremation Services. The Revs. Sam Snyder and Eddie Dietz will officiate. Burial will follow in the Buchanan cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the residence.

Memorials may be made to Haywood Regional Medical Center Hospice, 560 Leroy George Drive, Clyde, NC 28721; or to Buchanan cemetery Fund, c/o Justine Deaver, 942 Allens Creek Road, Waynesville, NC 28786.

Burlin E. Crawford CLYDE — Burlin Edwin Crawford, 81, of Clyde, died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2005, at his residence.

He was born May 5, 1923, in Jackson County to the late Phillip J. and Elizabeth Parris Crawford.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Allen, Glenn and Jesse W. “Mack” Crawford.

Surviving are his daughter, Pat Crawford-Beck of Waynesville; son, James E. Crawford and his wife, Gwendolyn Joy, of Mobile, Ala.; sister, Blanche Morris of Murphy; two grandchildren, Angela Chafin of Waynesville and Matthew Beck of Clyde; two step-grandchildren, Christopher Moore of Raleigh and Michael Moore of Washington, D.C.; and two great-grandchildrenm Michele Chafin of Canton and Hunter Chafin of Waynesville. At his request no services will be planned at this time.

Garrett Funerals and Cremations is in charge of arrangements.

Oma L. Reid

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Oma Reid, 84 of Columbus, Ohio, formerly of Waynesville, died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2005, after a long illness. She was the daughter of the late Jim and Ellar Miller.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Johnny Reid; two brothers, Stanley Miller and Dillard Miller; and four sisters, Vena Brown, Minnie Crawford, Elsie Sutton and Allie Greenwood.

Surviving are a daughter, Janet; granddaughters and grandsons; sisters, Edith Trull, Cora Nelson, Frances Geilman and Maebell Belisle; three nieces in Waynesville, Fannie Inman, Grace Jameson and Sandra Knight, all daughters of the late Vena Brown of Haywood County.

Services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 14, at Jerry Spears Funeral Rome in Ohio. The Rev. Dr. Gerald Roster officiated. Burial was in Sunset cemetery.

Wilburn F. Taylor

CANTON — Wilburn “Bill” Felix Taylor, 75, of Canton, died Saturday, Feb. 26, 2005, at the VA Hospital in Oteen.

Garrett Funerals and Cremations is in charge of arrangements.

Daniel L. Cowan

CANTON — Daniel L. Cowan of 1383 Dutch Cove Road, Canton, died Friday, Feb. 25, 2005.

The family will receive friends Monday at 8 East St., Weaverville, and other times at 1383 Dutch Cove Road, Canton.

Hart Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Adam B. Price

Adam Brently Price, 30, of Waynesville, died Sunday, Feb. 27, 2005.

The family will be at the residence and funeral arrangements will be announced by Wells Funeral Homes and Cremation Services of Waynesville.

Edward L. Thompson

CANTON —Edward Lewis Thompson was born June 22, 1919, in Canton to the late Rev. Charles Marion and Anna Belle Hall Thompson. God called him home to Heaven on Saturday, March 26, 2005.

He was a faithful member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Canton, where he served as a deacon for 57 years, since 1948 as well as deacon chairman and Sunday school teacher and superintendent for more than 40 years.

He sang in the church men and senior choirs, taught Bible school, served as superintendent of the Sunday school congress and program chairman (35 years) for the Waynesville Baptist Association. He supported missionary functions, mentored and counseled youth and adults.

He was a very active community member who belonged to the Civitan and Joy Clubs, served on the board of Mountain Projects, assisted in the establishment of Meals on Wheels for Haywood County, and was a past-master with the Masons. He retired from Champion Paper Company in 1982 after serving 40-plus years in various occupations involving the mixing and managing of chemicals used in paper manufacturing.

He was preceded in death by his loving and devoted wife of 64 years, Lonnie Sue Hamilton Thompson; a daughter, June C. Thompson; two sisters, Marie T. Friday and Beulah T. Daughtery; and three brothers, James Aldon Thompson, Lindon Thompson and Levester Thompson. Tenderly missing him are six children: Dr. Delores T. Sanders and husband, Charles, of Charlotte; Edda T. Lea of Raleigh; William C. Thompson and wife, Gwen, of Concord; Dora T. Harris of Winston-Salem; Dr. Sharron L. Thompson of Decatur, Ga., and Evern G. Thompson of Stone Mountain, Ga.; three sisters, Gertrude T. Logan and Elsie T. Stepp of Canton, and Betty T. Stringer of Durham; one brother, the Rev. Charles Thompson Jr. of Cincinnati, Ohio; 15 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Family night will be held from 7 until 8 p.m. tonight in the chapel of Hart Funeral Service. The funeral service will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Canton. The Rev. Larry Allen will officiate. The family will receive friends an hour prior to services. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

In memory of their parents, the Thompson children have established a fund for education and the church’s Sue and Edward Thompson Library Center. Eric P.J. Zurrer

CRUSO — Eric Paul Jospeh Zurrer, 84, died Tuesday, March 29, 2005.

He is survided by his wife, Ramona, and his dog, Rosie, in Cruso and his three children and eight grandchildren in Canada.

A Canadian veteran of World War II, he was a man of great courage and perseverance.

At his request, there will be no service. Memorial donations may be made to the Francis Fund for Animals, Box 308 Hazelwood, NC 28738, or Meals on Wheels in Haywood County.

Leah F.W. Dunston

Leah Frances Willey Dunston, 73, of Waynesville passed away Wednesday, March 30, at the Brian Center in Waynesville. She was born on April 25, 1931. in Bloomfield, Vt., to the late George and Mary Steele Willey.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Rita Willey, Joyce Dube and Evelyn Hickman; and a brother, Dean Willey. She is survived by a son, Bill Johnson, of Waynesville; one sister, Ruth Willey Brigham, of Raymond, N.H.; a half-sister, Marie Toussaint of Brentwood, N.H.; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Green Hill cemetery, with the Rev. Jerry LaPointe officiating.

Marie McReynolds

Marie Ellen Butterfly McReynolds, 56, of Fourth Street, Waynesville, died Wednesday, March 30, 2005, at her residence. Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services of Waynesville will announce arrangements.

Thomas J. Wilson

BOSTIC — Thomas Jerry Wilson, 64, of Bostic died Thursday, March 24, 2005. A native of Buncombe County, he was the son of the late Walker and Martha Arrowood Wilson. He had resided in Bostic community for the past several years and was a former employee of AFA Products Inc. in Forest City and was a United States Navy veteran. Mr. Wilson had attended Bent Creek Baptist Church and was a former member of the Southerners Gospel Quartet.

He was preceded in death by a nephew, Daryle Daves.

He is survived by his daughter, Tonya Brown and her husband Stephen of Leicester; one son, Thomas Richard “Ricky” Wilson of West Asheville; one sister, Jean Lancaster, of Bostic; four grandchildren, Mariah, Bethany, Olivia Brown and Laryn Wilson; two nieces, Rhonda Griffin of Asheville and Sharon Roberson of Bostic; one nephew, Johnny Daves of Asheville; six great-nieces and one great-nephew.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Chestnut Grove Baptist Church in Leicester, with the Rev. Bill Brown officiating.

The family will receive friends at the church immediately following the memorial service. Crawford/Ray Funeral Home in Canton is caring for the Wilson family.

Margaret Ann G. Hill

DANDRIDGE, Tenn. — Margaret Ann G. Hill, 74, of Haywood County died on March 23, 2005, at the home of her daughter, Becki H. Kirk of Dandridge, Tenn., after a brief illness. Hill worked in food service and was a bartender the majority of her life — several years at the Maggie Valley Country Club, the Holiday Inn in Waynesville and Asheville, Lake Junaluska Assembly and Arf’s Restaurant in Maggie Valley.

She is survived by three sons, Larry and his wife, Becky Hill, of Wallace; grandson, Aaron Hill of Wilmington; one daughter, Becki Kirk of Dandridge, Tenn.; three granddaughters, Angie and Brooke Yarski, both of Knoxville, Tenn., and Beth Hill of Waynesville; one grandson, James Kirk II of Dandridge, Tenn.; son, Bobby Hill and Barbara Boone of Waynesville; son, Joey Hill of Asheville; four great-grandchildren, Courtney and Blake Bivins and Tyler and Morgan Yarski, all of Knoxville, Tenn., and many cousins.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Annie C. Nichols, and father, James G. Garner, a very special aunt, Berdell Keener, two brothers and one sister.

A candlelight celebration of her life will be held at 8 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Garrett Funerals and Cremations.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Maudie Phillips

Maudie Ailene Moody Phillips, 82, of Waynesville passed away Thursday, March 31, 2005, at Haywood Regional Medical Center. She was born in Haywood County on Jan. 29, 1924, to the late Noble and Ester Wilson Moody. She worked at the Mountain Manor Nursing Home for many years.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Cora Lee Medford, and two brothers, Ed W. and Frank Moody.

Surviving are two brothers Odis and Ralph Moody of Waynesville; two sisters, Mildred Baggett and Frances Watts of Candler, and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Garrett Hillcrest Memorial Park Mausoleum chapel, with the Rev. Kenneth Rhinehart officiating. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. at the mausoleum prior to the service. Burial will be in Garrett Hillcrest Memorial Park, with Mike Moody, Bruce Heaton, Lewis Hannah, Dennis Moody, Tony Roberts and David Watts serving as pallbearers.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Haywood County EMS, 215 North Main St., Waynesville, NC 28786.

Florence S. Olsen

Florence S. Olsen, 85, of 420 Killian St., Waynesville, died Saturday, May 21, 2005, at Haywood Regional Medical Center.

A native of Great Falls, Mont., she was the daughter of the late Carl and Jenniw Lindgren Swanson. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Walter Olsen, who died in 1987.

She was a member of East Waynesville Baptist Church.

She is survived by a son, Craig Walter Olsen of Waynesville, and a sister, Myrtle Carlson of Florida.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services of Waynesville is in charge of arrangements.
