Dorothy A. Conard

Dorothy A. “Dot” Conard, 73, of White Oak Road, died Friday, April 16, 2004, at her residence. She was a native of Haywood County and was the daughter of the late Hobart F. and Fannie Burr McElroy Hoglen. She graduated from Waynesville Township High School in 1949. She was a seamstress with Waynewood Mattress from 1955 until 1969. She was a member of Liberty Baptist Church, was a Sunday school teacher for 55 years, a choir member, and Vacation Bible School director for 40 years. She was a member of the White Oak Home Demonstration Club and loved quilting, canning and all sorts of craft making. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Hubert Lee Hoglen. Surviving are her husband of 50 years, Herbert Conard; several nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews. Deaths Continued from Page 5A

Services were held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Liberty Baptist Church. The Revs. Ted Reeves, Jerry Nelson and Millard Grant officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery. The family received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Wells Funeral Homes and Cremation Services of Waynesville, where the body remained until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to services. Pallbearers were Steve and William Carver, Ralph and Harold Hoglen, Dean Smith, Larry Boone and Johnny Glance. Memorials may be made to Liberty Baptist Church Building Fund, 57 Hoglen Ridge, Waynesville, NC 28785.

Rita Ann Willey

Rita Ann Willey, 81, of 360 Old Balsam Road, Waynesville, died Friday, April 16, 2004, at Autumn Care Nursing Home. She was a native of Lancaster, N.H., and was the daughter of the late George Lee and Mary Margaret Steele Willey. Surviving are four sisters, Leah Francis Dunston of Waynesville, Laura Evelyn Hickman of Chicago, Ruth Lucille Brigham of Raymond, N.H., and Marie Tousaint of Nashua, N.H.; and several nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Greenhill cemetery. Wells Funeral Homes and Cremation Services of Waynesville is in charge of arrangements.

Deborah Hughes

Deborah Ann Duncan Hughes, 49, of Hyatt Creek Road, Waynesville, died Saturday, April 17, 2004, at Mission Hospitals. She was a native of Haywood County and was the daughter of the late Theodore and C.L. Leatherwood Duncan. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Deanna Free. Surviving are her son, Anthony Wayne Free of Waynesville; and two grandsons, Austin Wayne Free and Elijah Dean Free. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Homes and Cremation Services. The Revs. Ted Reeves and Johnny Swanger will officiate. Burial will follow at Greenhill cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Frankie Rhinehart

Frankie Stamey Rhinehart, 86, of 36 Wes Lane, died Thursday, April 15, 2004 at her residence. A lifelong resident of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late Erastus and Laura Mae Stevenson Stamey and was the wife of the late Wayne Rhinehart, who died in 1978. She retired from Champion Paper and was preceded in death by her sisters, Ruth Stamey and Alberta Stamey and her brothers, Billy Stamey and Wayne Stamey. She is survived by several nieces and nephews. A private graveside service was held Saturday at Oak Grove Baptist Church cemetery with the Rev. Michael Wheeler officiating. Crawford/Ray Funeral Home and Cremation Services was in charge of arrangements.

David Paul Sherrill

CLYDE — David Paul Sherrill, 18, of 196 Gatewood Dr., died on March 31, 2006.

He was born in Savannah, Ga., and was preceded in death by his stepfather, David White. He was a member of Long’s Chapel United Methodist Church, where he participated in the youth group and the drama ministry.

He was captain of the Tuscola varsity baseball team in 2005-2006 and was a starting pitcher.

He was voted Most Valuable Player and All Conference in 2005. He was a member of the Outlaws Traveling Baseball Team and played in the North Carolina 2005 Senior Games in Raleigh. He was an avid Boston Red Sox fan.

He was also an active member of Future Teachers of America and had received a baseball scholarship at Erskin College in South Carolina.

He is survived by his mother, Sherry M. White; a brother, Larry Allen White, of the home; maternal grandparents, David and Barbara Moody of Lake Junaluska; maternal great grandmother, Anna Moody, also of Lake Junaluska; paternal grandfather, Paul Sherrill of Waynesville; uncles Chuck Moody and wife Kim of Clyde, Clif Moody and wife Trish of Charlotte, and Tony Sherrill and wife Jackie of Clyde; and cousins, Courtney, Nicholas and Hope.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, April 3, at Long’s Chapel United Methodist Church with Rev. Robert E. Fuquay Jr. and Rev. Josh Pearman officiating. Burial will follow at Green Hillcemetery. The family received friends Sunday evening at Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville, and at other times the family will be at the home of David’s grandparents, David and Barbara Moody, 15 Moody View Drive, Lake Junaluska.

Members of the Tuscola varsity baseball team will serve as pallbearers.

Eddie Smith

ASHEVILLE—Edwin “Eddie” Glenn Smith, 58, of Asheville, died Sunday, Sept. 4, 2005, at Memorial Mission Hospital.

Smith was born in Haywood County and was a son of the late Thurman R. Smith.

He worked for K-Mart for 23 years and more recently for Ingle’s Corporation.

He is survived by three daughters, Angela Hall and her husband Brian, Crystal Smith and her husband David, all of Asheville and Dawn Smith of Charleston, S.C.; a granddaughter, Sydney Hall; his mother, Eva Dean Norris Burress of Arden; a sister, Janet Godfrey of Candler; and a brother, Thurman (Roy) Smith of Mt. Holly.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue, with the Rev. Jimmy Burress officiating. Burial will be at New Cruso cemetery, Cruso.

His family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home and at other times will be at the home of his mother. Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association, PO Box 2702, Asheville, NC 28802.

James V. Distasio Sr.

CLYDE—James Vincent Distasio Sr., 84, of 52 Honeysuckle Street, died Monday, Aug. 29, 2005, at Haywood Regional Medical Center. He was a native of Wallingford, Conn. and was the son of the late Peter and Filemonea Distasio. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his eldest son, James Vincent Distasio Jr.

He was employed with the Allegheny Ludnum Corporation for 37 years where he worked in shipping and receiving. He was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of New Covenant Church. He was an avid woodworker and had a passion for his yard. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Jacqueline Distasio; a daughter, Joyce Banks and her husband James of Clyde; two sons, William Distasio and his wife Gail of Meriden, Conn. and Keith Distasio and his wife Kim of Watertown, Maine; one brother, Joseph Distasio of West Haven, Conn.; 15 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. A memorial service well be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, at New Covenant Church with the Rev. Tom Murphy and the Rev. Nick Honerkamp officiating. Visitation will follow at the family’s residence, 52 Honeysuckle Street. Memorials may be made to Haywood Regional Medical Center Hospice, 56 Leroy George Drive, Clyde, NC 28721.

Lamar H. Conley

OTTO—Lamar Henry Conley, 73, died Saturday, Sept. 3, 2005, at Mountain Trace Nursing Home in Sylva.

He was a native of Macon County and the son of the late Roxie Conley. He was a retired heavy equipment operator for Vulcan Products and was a member of Newman Chapel Baptist Church.

He is survived by his long time companion, Betty Fox; one sister, Marie Putman of Chandler; one brother, Verlon Russell of Pennsville, N.J.; and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a one sister, Katherine Conley Seagle and one brother, Elmer Frisby.

Funeral services were held Sept. 6 at Newman Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. Alton Dendy, the Rev. Danny Cannon and Eddie Seagle officiating. Burial was in Newman Chapel Baptist Church cemetery. Ed Taylor, Verlon Russell, Dennis Seagle, Sammy Seagle, Eddie Seagle, Scotty Monteith, Len Pederson and Erskine Monteith served as pallbearers.

The family received friends Monday at Bryant Funeral Home where the body remained until placed in the Church 30 minutes prior to service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Newman Chapel Baptist Church, 60 Mulberry Road, Otto, NC 28763.

Bryant Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Edith S. Best

CLYDE—Edith Smart Best, 89, of Silvers Cove Road, died Monday, Sept. 5, 2005, at Haywood Regional Medical Center.

She was the daughter of the late Joe Silas and Sarah Davis Smart and was also preceded in death by her brother, Joe Silas Smart.

She was a graduate of Clyde High School and a member of Crabtree Baptist Church. Best was a homemaker and a dairy farmer.

She is survived by her loving and caring husband of 68 years, Willard P. Best, one daughter, Doris West and her husband Jimmy of Clyde; one son, James Autry Best and his wife Betty Jo of Clyde; one sister, Wilma Howell of Clyde, two grandchildren, Martin Clark and his wife Marianne of Bloom-ington, Ind. and Kathie Carter and her husband Lynwood of Weaverville; one step-granddaughter, Diane Perez, three great-grandchildren, Ashley Clark, Brittany Clark and Joe McGimsey and one step-great-granddaughter, Amanda Carter. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, at the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Homes. The Rev. Jerry Ensley, the Rev. Kitty Crain and the Rev. Gene King will officiate. Burial will follow at Dawn Memory Garden. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Nephews and family serving as pallbearers will be Don Smart, Tim Smart, Ray McElroy, Michael Lentz, Joe McGimsey, Darryll Cagle, Tim Lentz and Roger Ferguson.

Memorials may be made to Haywood Regional Medical Center Hospice, Home Health Building, 560 Leroy George Drive, Clyde, NC 28721.

Jane de Saulles

CLYDE—Jane Maureen de Saulles, 71, of Old Clyde Road died Monday, Sept. 5, 2005, at her residence in the presence of family and friends.

She was a native of Birmingham, England and resided in Tybee Island, Ga. before moving to Clyde. She was the daughter of the late Frederick J. and Dorothy Anne de Saulles Heeley. She was also preceded in death by a son, Stuart H. Rogers.

She was a member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church. Her working career began as a nurse in England. Upon moving to the United States in 1955, she worked in health care for a number of years.

After obtaining her citizenship, she was one of the first female deputy’s for the Haywood County Sheriff’s Department. She served as an advocate coordinator for REACH for three counties. In later years, her interest in gardening lead her to obtain a degree in horticulture.

She is survived by a daughter, Elizabeth R. McCracken and her husband Bill of Clyde; a son, Douglas M. Rogers of Clyde and their father, Gene M. Rogers of Clyde; three brothers, Fred Heeley and his wife Maureen of Shropshire, England, Harry Heeley and his wife Jean of Watford, England and Donald Heeley of Birmingham, England; three grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and very close friends.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, at the Canton chapel of Wells Funeral Home, with the Rev. Tim McRee officiating.

Burial will follow at Haynes Family cemetery in Clyde.

The family will receive friends from noon until 2 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to St. Andrews Episcopal Church, 99 Academy Street, Canton, NC 28716; Haywood Regional Medical Center, Hospice, 560 Leroy George Drive, Clyde, NC 28721 or you may plant a tree in her memory.

Leonard Roe Phillips

WAYNESVIILLE—Leonard Roe Phillips, 78, of Ray Street, died on Sunday, Sept. 4, 2005, at Mission St. Joseph Healthcare System. A native of Haywood County, he was the son of the late James and Margaret Phillips. He retired from the Town of Waynesville Maintenance Department and worked several years for the county at the Transfer Station. He was also a member of the Waynesville Fire Department. He enjoyed raising cattle and growing tobacco and was of the Baptist faith.

He is survived by one daughter, Paula Mathews of Waynesville; four brothers, Glen, Charles, Frank and Thomas Phillips, all of Waynesville; two granddaughters, Carla Hampton and her husband Jason, and Alicia Aguilar; and one great granddaughter, Angelina Vazquez.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, at Green Hill cemetery with the Rev. Jay Eastridge officiating.

The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. on Wednesday at Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville.

John L. Wintermeier

WHITTIER—John L. Wintermeier, 65, died Monday, Sept. 5, 2005, at Memorial Mission Hospital Campus.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, at New Covenant Church in Clyde. The family requests that in lier of flowers, memorials be made to New Covenant Church, 767 Lee Road, Clyde, NC 28721. Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services of Waynesville is in charge of arrangements.

Maggie G. Ward

MAGGIE VALLEY—Maggie G. Ward, 89, died Monday, Sept. 5, 2005, at Haywood Regional Medical Center.

She was a native of Maggie Valley and the daughter of the late John Anderson Gibson and Martha Evans Gibson.

She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Harry L. Ward Sr.; a son, Harry L. Ward Jr. and wife Eddie Sue; a daughter, Agnes W. Mcdaris and husband Bill; one very special grandson, Colten Tanner Ward, who was the joy of her life. She was not only a “grandmom” to Tanner, but a “special playmate”. They had many happy wonderful times-together. She is also survived by one sister, Flora G. Killian of Clyde. She was predeceased by a brother, Hulan Gibson; and a sister, Kate G. Rathbone, both of Maggie Valley.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Garrett Funerals and Cremations, with the Rev. Rick Mason and the Rev. Erma Bond officiating.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Garrett Hillcrest Memorial Park. Pallbearers will Neil Carpenter, Don Carpenter, Rodney Palmer, Dean Smith, James Killan and John Ogden.

Memorials can be made in her name to First Baptist Church of Maggie Valley or to Jonathan Valley Elementary School. An online guest registry may be signed at www.legacy.com.

Lucille C. Jones

WAYNESVILLE—Lucille Crawford Jones, 89, died peacefully on Aug. 27, 2005, at Mission Hospital.

She was born in Haywood County and was a daughter of the late Fuller Crawford and Frances Morrow Crawford. She was an area resident all of her life.

Along with her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, W. Fred Jones; a sister, Mattie Kay Hampton; and two brothers, Bryce and Terry Crawford.

She is survived by her children, Patricia J. Connor, Barbara J. Townsend and W. Fred Jones Jr.; a sister, Jeanette Thurmond; six grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews, cousins and other dear relatives. A private burial will be in Green Hill cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Elizabeth House, in care of Four Seasons Hospice and Palliative Care, PO Box 2395, Hendersonville, NC 28793. Thos. Shepherd & Son, Funeral Directors and Cremation Memorial Center are in charge of arrangements.

Mary Suttles

Mary Abernathy Suttles, 70, of Jacksonville, Fla., passed away Saturday, Sept. 3, 2005. Crawford/Ray Funeral Home is caring for the Suttles family and will announce arrangements.

Bette Q. Bardol

CANTON — Elizabeth “Bette” Ann Queen Bardol passed away peacefully on Monday, Jan. 30, 2006, at Silver Bluff Nursing Home where she had been a resident for the last three years.

She was born in Owensboro, Ky. on Feb. 13, 1922 and was the daughter of the late Frank Clarence and Camilla Triplett Queen.

Bette was a former ballet instructor and a member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Canton, where she enjoyed participating in their Bible studies and Episcopal Women’s Fellowship.

She is survived by two children, Camilla Ward and her husband, Brewster of Asheville and Charles Bardol of Canton; a sister, Frances McElroy of Tucson, Ariz.; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A private graveside memorial service is planned for Valentine’s Day. Memorials may be made to St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church Building Fund or Memorial Garden, 99 Academy Street, Canton, NC 28716. Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services of Canton is in charge of arrangements.

Floyd D. Farrow

CANTON — Floyd D. Farrow, 68, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2006, at Haywood Regional Medical Center. He was born in Syracuse, N.Y. on Aug. 18, 1938. He worked for Shoney’s. He was a member of the Church of God in Canton.

He is survived by two brothers and three sisters. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Garrett Funerals and Cremations, with the Rev. Henry Grymes officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday.

Burial will be in Pleasant Hill cemetery.

Hellan D. Johnson

CLYDE — Hellan Dotson Johnson, 81, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2006, after a brief illness. She was a lifelong resident of Haywood County and daughter of the late A. H. and Bertha Smith Dotson.

She retired from Champion Paper with 44 years of service and was a member of the Order of Eastern Star. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Jack L. Dotson and William Gale Dotson of Cleveland, Tenn. She is survived by a brother, Rex Ronald Dotson and his wife Wanda of Cleveland and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Crawford/Ray Funeral Home and Cremation Service is caring for the Johnson family.

Jerry S. Goerig

ASHEVILLE — Jerry Stephen Goerig, 55, died Monday, Jan. 30, 2006, following an extended illness with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease).

He was the son of Luella Jane Gililand Goerig and the late James George Goerig and a member of the Basicila of St. Lawrence DM.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife Mary Ann Redmond Goerig, two sons, Scott Goerig of Glenn Ellen, Ill. and Jon Goerig of Columbus, Ohio; a sister, Jackie Thompson; and a brother, Jim Goerig.

A memorial service was held Thursday, at the Basilica of St. Lawrence DM.
