Patricia Condren

Patricia A. “Trish” Condren, 38, of Waynesville passed away Monday, Jan. 30, 2006, at Haywood Regional Medical Center. She was the beloved daughter of Donald Condren and his wife Virginia of Maggie Valley and Patricia Levin and her husband Burton of Naples, Fla.

She was born into the Roman Catholic Faith on April 12, 1967, in Montclair, N.J. She loved reading, cats and mountains. She was a very caring person who was cherished by all her family.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by one brother, Terence Donald Condren and his wife Deborah of Wellesley, Mass.; three aunts, Loretta Tartaglia and Veronica Mabee both of New Jersey and Kathleen Gorman of South Carolina, and two nieces, Alexandra and Gabrielle Condren of Wellesley. Private interment services will be at the St. Margaret’s Columbarium.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetic Association at PO Box 1132, Fairfax, VA 22038-1132.

Bertha S. Berrong

CANTON – Bertha Annie Stevenson Berrong, 94, of Phillipsville Loop died Dec. 5, 2006, at Autumn Care Nursing Home.

She was a native and lifelong resident of Haywood County and the daughter of the late James and Flora Parton Stevenson. She was preceded in death by her husband, John O. Berrong who died in 1990 and two brothers, Troy and Homer Stevenson.

She was a member of West Canton Baptist Church and retired from American Enka Corp. with 27 years of service. Bertha loved gardening and working in her flowers. She had a special place in her heart for her family, especially her grandchildren.

She is survived by a daughter, Betty Prince and her husband, Homer, of Louisville, Tenn.; a son, John H. Berrong and his wife, Theresa, of Canton; a sister, Bonnie Glance and her husband, Carroll, of Crabtree; five grandchildren, Laura Berrong, Tracy DeMar, Rebecca Frazier, and Mike and Doug Prince; and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Canton chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Revs. W. O. Henson, Wallace Britt, and Mike Austin officiating. Burial followed at Antioch Baptist Church cemetery. The family received friends from 12:30 until 2 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Haywood County Christian Ministry, 150 Branner Avenue, Waynesville, NC 28786 or to West Canton Baptist Church Sound System Fund, 75 Lowe Street, Canton, NC 28716. Sara Elizabeth Price

LEXINGTON, S.C – Sara Elizabeth Magalis Price, 96, wife of the late Launie Clarence “Red” Price, went to be with her Lord Thursday, Nov. 30, 2006. A graveside service was held in Bamberg, S.C.

From Columbia, S.C. she was born March 31, 1910, the daughter of the late Perle Gaston and Charles Lawrence Magalis. She is survived by her daughter, Elisabeth Price of Clyde; son, Charles Price and his wife, Judy; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was the editor of her school yearbook and graduated from the University of South Carolina in English and French. She taught elementary school grades in Charleston. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Charleston for more than 65 years, where she taught children and youth, wrote and directed plays, made costumes, props and wrote songs. She was multi-talented; she tatted lace, crocheted and was a seamstress. In character, she was a motivator with spice and had a zest for life and learning, and was nearly always singing or humming.

Memorials may be made to New Covenant Church, 767 Lee Road, Clyde, NC 28721 for Scotland Missions – Elisabeth Price.

Her favorite scripture is Jeremiah 29:11: “‘For I know the plans that I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘Plans to prosper you and not harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’” She finished well.

Robert Lowry Lee Jr.

OCEANSIDE, CA – Robert Lowry Lee, 82, originally of Waynesville, died Dec. 4, 2006, of lung cancer.

He was a native of Haywood County and the son of Robert and Nell Lee of Waynesville. He was preceded in death by his parents, his cousin, Virginia Carter, and his mother-in-law Jean Dearborn. He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Lee of Oceanside; his sons Allen and Skip both of Sterling, Ill; and seven grandchildren.

He attended Virginia Institute and received his degree in electrical engineering from the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. He was a professional engineer in Illinois, California and New York.

He was also a retired lieutenant in the U.S. Navy – submarine and surface warfare, an assistant naval attache to China (pre-revolution), a 51-year member of the Masons and 50-year Shrine member.

He was an avid swimmer, avid competitive sailor, and enjoyed surfing up to 80 years old. He loved the Great Smoky Mountains and enjoyed birdwatching.

Private funeral and cremations were made by the family.

Memorials can be made to the American Cancer Society/ American Lung Society.

Donald Bruce Briggs

MAGGIE VALLEY —Donald Bruce Briggs, 77, of Maggie Valley passed away Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2006, at his residence.

He was born in Springfield, Ohio on Sept. 12, 1929. He served in the U.S. Air Force. He graduated from the University of Florida with high honors and he was a member of the Phi Kappa Phi fraternity. He then graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology with a Master’s degree in city planning. He was awarded one of five national Sears Roebuck Fellowships to attend graduate school. He is preceded in death by his parents, Donald M. and Helen Briggs.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Barbara Briggs; three sons, Garrett L. Briggs and wife, Joan of Daytona Beach, Fla., Robert B. Briggs and wife, Cynthia of Waynesville, and James B. Briggs and fiancé, Tammy Brown of Maggie Valley; one brother, Alan Briggs of McLean, Va.; one sister, Janet Eisenberg of Aspen, Colo.; and five grandchildren, Molly Briggs, Katie Briggs, Brittni Briggs, Bradley Briggs, and Malloree Francis.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 8 in the chapel of Garrett Funerals and Cremations with the Rev. Jeremy Troxler officiating. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to the service. Burial will be in Garrett Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Fred Julius Tittle

BESSEMER CITY – Fred Julius Tittle, 43, passed away Monday, Dec. 4, 2006, in Gaston County as a result of an auto accident.

He was born in Gaston County on Dec. 5, 1962 and was the son of the late Edward “Bud” Tittle and the late Ann Brogdon Tittle. He was a current employee of Chematron of Charlotte. He was a NASCAR fan and enjoyed boating and fishing. He was a loving father and a great husband who loved his family and friends.

Preceded in death in addition to his parents, by his sister-in-law, Connie Gunter and brother-in-law, Floyd Baines.

He is survived by his wife, Debbie Baines Tittle of the home; son, Christopher Lee Tittle and daughter, Anna Marie Tittle, also of the home; sisters and brothers-in-law, Bobbie (Tittle) and Michael Wayne Carpenter of Stanley, Judy (Tittle) and Adrian Loy of Springfield, Ohio; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Loyd and Polly Baines; nephews and nieces, Ben Gunter, Aaron Gunter, Baxter Baines, Brad Baines, Sonya Selph, Leslie Wyke, Jeffrey Selph, Patrick Loy and Brittany Loy; brothers-in-law, Dennis Baines and Lloyd K. Baines; sister-in-law, Donna Baines; and eight great nephews and nieces.

The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. at Greene Funeral Service - West Chapel in Gastonia today. Visitation was yesterday at Greene Funeral Service-West Chapel in Gastonia. Officiating clergy is Pastor Michael Daughrity. Interment will be in Westview Gardens in Bessemer City. Arrangements are by Greene Funeral Service-West Chapel in Gastonia.

Lois Collins Scott

DURHAM – Lois Collins Scott, 103, died Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2006, at Hillcrest Convalescent Center.

Mrs. Scott was born in Durham, daughter of the late Minnie Bradley Collins and Seba J. Collins. She was a member of the 1924 class of Trinity College. This was the last graduating class before it became known as Duke University. Mrs. Collins started teaching high school in Waynesville in 1925. After one year, she returned to Durham to marry Clyfford Scott, her husband of 70 years. Lois taught in Durham elementary schools for 16 years. In 1942 Clyfford was assigned as an attorney for the Department of Agriculture in Washington, D.C. After moving to Washington, Lois taught in Rockville, Md. until her retirement in 1965.

They traveled extensively throughout the world and retired to Waynesville in 1968. Lois was always very active in the United Methodist Church wherever she lived. She remained a member of the First UMC of Waynesville. After her husband’s death in 1995, she returned to Durham where she made many new friends through Epworth UMC Care Group.

Surviving are two sisters, Eleanor Luquire, of Durham and Ina Lee Tingen and her husband, Sidney, of Mobile, Ala.; brother, Preston B. Collins and his wife Marge, of Satellite Beach, Fla; niece, Jean F. Holleman and her husband, William, of Durham; along with several other nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death be her sister, Iva C. Farrow and a brother, S.J. Collins, Jr.

A graveside funeral will be held 11 a.m. today at Maplewood cemetery. The Rev. George Thompson will officiate. The family will receive friends at the home of Jean and Bill Holleman, 3417 Ogburn Ct., Durham, N.C.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First UMC of Waynesville, 566 S. Haywood St., Waynesville, NC 28786 or to Epworth UMC, 3002 Hope Valley Rd., Durham, NC 27707. The family is being assisted by Howerton & Bryan Funeral Home.

Wylma S. Benhart

Wylma Scott Benhart, 69, of Waynesville died at her home Sunday, Feb. 20, 2005.

She was born Nov. 10, 1935 in Sandy Mush to the late Ernie and Nellie Scott. Wylma was the owner/operator of the Cabinet Warehouse for 20 years. She was a very strong Christian woman and was a member of the Woodlawn Baptist Church. She also enjoyed helping many people who she came in contact with.

She was preceded in death in addition to her parents by one son, David Wayne Raley.

She is survived by her husband Marvin Benhart, Richard Raley and his wife Deanna of Waynesville: one step-daughter, Heidi Gessiene Basch of Holiday, Fla.; one stepson, William Joseph Benhart and his wife Heather of Chapel Hill; three stepgrandchildren, Tristan, Summer and Audrey.

Graveside services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Garrett Hillcrest Memorial Park with the Rev. Alan Davis.

Jeston Frady

Jeston Frady, 89, of Ivory Lane, died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2005 at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health. A native of Jackson County, Mrs. Frady was a homemaker and the daughter of the late John and Margaret Buchanan Beck.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey Frady, five children, and two brothers and sisters.

Survivors include two sons, Roscoe C. Frady and Harold Frady, both of Sylva; five daughters, Brenda Griffin, Peggy Frady and Margaret Tippett, all of Sylva; Barbara Moore of Cullowhee; and Geneva Shope of Waynesville; two brothers, Sam Beck and Johnnie Ray Beck, both of Sylva; 14 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home, 714 W. Main St., Sylva, NC with the Rev. Larry Bryson officiating. Burial will be in East Fork cemetery.

Lydia Rogers

CANTON S Lydia Samantha Shipman Rogers, 90, formerly of the Bethel community, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2005 at the Brian Center of Waynesville.

She was a lifelong resident of Haywood County and was a daughter of the late Mark and Julia Pressley Shipman. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Robert M. Franklin; second husband, Mac Mashburn; and her third husband, Garland Rogers; three brothers and one sister.

She retired from Champion International in 1961 with 19 years of service. She was a member of Crestview Baptist Church and was a member of the Canton Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.

She is survived by one daughter, Emily Holder of Clyde, one son Earl B. Franklin and his wife Dot of Candler, two step-daughters, Wilma Thomas and Opal Edwards both of Canton, one sister Veldia Biddix of Waynesville, one brother Arthur Shipman of Canton, seven grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, 10 great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at the Canton chapel of Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services. The Rev. Jerry Ensley and the Rev. G. W. Jameson will officiate.

Burial will follow at Bon-A-Venture cemetery on Newfound Road in Canton. The family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. until 2:45 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Haywood Regional Medical Center Hospice, Home Health Bldg, 560 Leroy George Drive, Clyde, NC 28721.

James W. Priest II

James W. Priest, age 39, of 790 Oakdale Road, Waynesville died Feb. 20, 2005 at Haywood Regional Medical Center.

A native of Irving, N.Y., he was the son of the late Barbara Pritchard Priest. He was a computer draftsman and was employed by Peco, Inc. He enjoyed fly fishing, mountain biking, skiing, golf, baseball, and auto racing. He was a member of Ninevah Baptist Church.

He is survived by his father, James Wayne Priest, Sr. and stepmother, Roxanne, of Troy, Mich.; his wife of eight years, Monica Priest; a daughter, Paige Elizabeth Priest, of the home; a sister, Kimberly Priest, of Buffalo, N.Y.; and a brother, David Priest, of Troy, Mich.

A memorial service will be held in New York at a later date.

Memorials may be made to Ninevah Baptist Church Building Fund, 931 Country Club Drive, Waynesville, NC 28786.

Ann Brackett

Ann Brackett, 72, of 297 Hendrix Street, Waynesville, died Monday, Feb.21, 2005 at her residence.

A native of Cherokee County, she was the daughter of Gordon and Maudie Dailey Morgan. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Marlor L. Brackett, who died in 2002; two brothers, Willie and Sheridan Morgan; and a sister, Ruby Morgan. She was an inspector at Wellco for 11 years and was a 4-H leader for many years. She enjoyed quilting and sewing and was of Baptist faith.

She is survived by a daughter, Sandra Brackett, of Jacksonville, Fla.; three sons, Mike Brackett, and Arnold Brackett and his wife, Gloria, ofWaynesville, and Bruce Brackett and his wife, Amelia, of Semora; a sister; Lelia Burris, of Andrews; a brother, Frank Morgan, of Murphy; five grandchildren, Toni, Alora, Sarah, Jody, and Tiffany Brackett and her fiancÚ, Chris Rich; and two great grandchildren, Cody Brackett and Elijah Rich.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Wednesday at Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville.
