Randall J. Conklin

MAGGIE VALLEY SRandall James Conklin, 83, of 115 Reuben Branch Road, died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2005, at Canton Christian Convalescent Nursing Home.

A native of Newark, N.J., he was the son of Randall William and Harriet Patrick Teelin Conklin. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Harriet MacBeth of England and a brother, Walter W. Conklin of Sarasota, Fla. He graduated from Asbury Park High School and was a veteran of World War II. He was made a deacon in Trinity Church, Asbury Park, N.J. in April 1950 and received his bachelorls degree from Rutgers University and his Masters of Divinity from Philadelphia Divinity School in 1950. Following his ordination in 1950, he assumed his pastoral duties at St. Johnls Church in Maple Shade, N.J.

He became the Rector of St. Stephenls Episcopal Church in Beverly, NJ in 1956. He served in a multitude of ecclesiastical capacities which included acting as supply priest for Grace Church in Merchantville, N.J. and St. Johnls in Maple Shade, the interim Rector of Holy Trinity in Delair, and many years of devotion as Chaplain and Instructor of Religion at St. Maryls Hall/Doane Academy in Burlington, N.J.

He also enjoyed many years of teaching at The Girlsl Summer Conference in Asbury Park, NJ. The Right Reverend Alfred L. Banyard bestowed the title of Canon upon him in 1968. He was a life member of the American Legion NJW.A. Cortright, Jr. Post O115, Beverly NJ. and the Beverly Fire Company No. 1.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Anne Cottrell Conklin; a daughter, Claudia A. Raber and her husband, Robert, of Maggie Valley; a sister, Ruth Hummel of Whiting, N.J.; five grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and three great great grandchildren.

Memorial services were held at noon Wednesday at Grace Church in the Mountains of which he was a member with the Rev. Dr. Howard White Jr. Rector officiating. The family received friends following the committal in the Parish Hall.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Grace Church in the Mountains, 394 North Haywood Street, Waynesville, NC 28786.

Calvin Taylor

ASHEVILLE S Calvin Coolidge Taylor, 81, died Monday, Feb. 21, 2005 at St. Josephls campus of Mission Hospitals.

He was a son of the late Hardin Clyde and Lillian Bradley Taylor and was a 1950 graduate of Clemson University with a M.S. degree. He was employed by the United States E.P.A. as an economist and was a member of Biltmore United Methodist Church. Mr. Taylor was also a Navy Veteran of World War II in the South Pacific.

He is survived by his wife, Anne Wells Taylor; one daughter, Anna Lisa Taylor of Dacula, Ga.; one son Thomas Calvin Taylor of Hilton Head, S.C.; one sister, Ann Brashier of Fountain Inn, S.C.; four brothers, Dave Taylor of Mauldin, S.C., Robert Taylor of Greenville, SC, Fred Taylor of Woodlands, Ga., and Sgt. Atlas Taylor of Altoona, Fla.; three grandchildren, Matthew, Cameron and Caroline Taylor.

Funeral services will be at 1:00 pm Thursday, Feb. 24, 2005, in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home & Cremation Services with the Reverend Ashley Crowder Stanley officiating. Burial will follow at Bethel cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11:30 until 1 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. The family requests that memorials be made to Biltmore United Methodist Church, 376 Hendersonville Road, Asheville, NC 28803.

Julius J. Jones

Julius Joseph Jones, 79, of 171 Cavalier Drive, Waynesville, died Sunday, March 20, 2005, at Haywood Regional Medical Center.

A native of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Talmadge and Oberia Buchanan Jones. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Edna Silvers Jones, who died in 1984; a son, Danny Jones; a brother, Harley Jones; and a sister, Mildred Jones. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He retired after 25 years from Parkway Heating and Air Conditioning. He enjoyed watching television and was a member of Grandview Baptist Church.

He is survived by one daughter, Angie Fowler, and her husband, Dean; a daughter-in-law, Barbara Jones; six sons: Tommy Jones and his wife, Jeannie, Willie Jones and his wife, Jeanette, Timmy Jones, Jerry Jones and his wife, Joyce, Joe Jones, and Talmadge Jones; four sisters, Lucille and Nettie Norman, Hettie Frady, and Jessie Davis; one brother, Cecil Jones; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, all of Waynesville.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 23, in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home, with the Rev. Phillip Wyatt and the Rev. Kenneth Rhinehart officiating. Burial followed at Buchanan cemetery. military services were conducted by VFW Post 5202 and American Legion Post 47. Serving as pallbearers were Dwayne, Eddie and Timmy Jones, Cameron Bolden, Mike Chambers, and Dean Fowler.

Memorials may be made to Haywood Regional Medical Center Hospice, 560 Leroy George Drive, Clyde, NC 28721.

Lucille A. Rogers

CANDLER S Lucille Allman Rogers, 70, of 11 Stamey Road, died Tuesday, March 22, 2005, at her home.

She was a native of Madison County and the daughter of the late Wilburn and Pansy McGalliard Allman. She was preceded in death by a step-daughter, Vicky Morgan.

She retired in 1984 from Palmer Instrument and was a former employee of Asheville Plastics and J&S Cafeteria. She was a member of Pole Creek Baptist Church.

In addition to her husband of 34 years, Thomas Gene Rogers, she is survived by two step-daughters, Kathy Silver and her husband, John of Campobello, S.C., and Sherry Burress and her husband, Tim of Canton; a step-son, Tony Rogers and his wife, Sheila, of Candler; three sisters, Betty Edwards of Weaverville, Mattie Jarvis of Mars Hill and Peggy Brooks of Vermont; two brothers, J.B. Allman of Asheville and Donald Allman of Vermont; 13 grandchildren, one great-grandson and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, at Pole Creek Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dennis Thurman officiating. Burial will follow at Pole Creek Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. today at the Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services of Canton. Pallbearers will be Bobby Norton, Jack Allman, Jr., Sabe Sutton, Travis Sutton and Cody Sutton, and Tom Lance. Memorials may be made to Mountain Area Hospice, P. O. Box 25338, Asheville, NC 28813.

Ruby R. Costine

Ruby Eileen Reninger Costine went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday evening, March 22, 2005, following several years of ill health.

She was born on Jan. 7, 1912, to William Weaver and Dora Teller Reninger at Hubbard, Neb. She grew up in Norfolk, Neb., where the family relocated, and graduated from Norfolk High School in 1929. As the youngest of the 11 Reninger children, she wintered in Florida with her parents where she met Frank Costine at church BYPU one Sunday evening. A summer's correspondence followed and the next year the couple married in March 1931.

They made their home in Avon Park, Fla., where Mrs. Costine taught Sunday School, was president of WMU and sang solos in the choir of First Baptist Church.

During World War II, she kept books for a couple of businesses, and then returned to business school at night, honing her secretarial skills. Her husbandls work took the couple to Ocala, Fla., where she continued bookkeeping and earned her real estate license. By the time of her husband's death in 1973, they lived in Quincy, Fla., and she had become office manager and controller for Teletron, Inc. of Tallahassee.

She relocated to the Grandview area of Waynesville in 1995 to be near her daughter and was a member of First Baptist Church. She served as a volunteer at Haywood Christian Ministries and HAWA.

Survivors include her daughter and husband, Dodi and Bill Lovett; three grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren: Eileen L. and Fred Weber, Rick, Michael and Katherine of Knoxville, Tenn., D'Ann L. and Terry Mimbs, Whitney, Matthew and Blake of McRae, Ga. and the Rev. Marion F. and Chesley Lovett, Kaliste, Caleb, Kenan, Abby, Anna and Jonathan of Flowery Branch, Ga.

The family received friends Thursday at Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services of Waynesville. Funeral service and burial will be in Tallahassee, Fla.

Margaret G. Hill

DANDRIDGE, Tenn. S Margaret G. Hill, 74, of Dandridge, Tenn., formerly of Waynesville, passed away peacefully Wednesday, March 23, 2005, at the home of her daughter, Becki Hill Kirk. Memorial Services will be held at a later date.

Alex Ray Rogers

GRAYSON, Ky. S Alex Ray Rogers, 63, of Grayson, Ky., passed away on Wednesday, March 16, 2005, at his residence.

He was born May 5, 1941, in Jackson County, North Carolina, a son of Mary Catherine Buckhannan Rogers of Cashiers, N.C., and the late Virgle Rogers.

Rogers was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army, having served two tours in Vietnam.

Rogers was a power lineman for Pike Electric and was a Life Member and past commander of VFW Post #3705 Grayson, Ky. and a member of the American Legion #345 Willard, Ky.

Preceding him in death were his father and a brother, Carl O. Rogers.

His survivors include his mother; his wife, Ernestine Cooper Rogers of Grayson, Ky.; three sons, Virgil R. Rogers of Coon Rapids, Minn., Michael A. Rogers of Grayson, Ky., and Alex R. Rogers Jr. of West Liberty, Ky.; five grandchildren; a sister, Sally Ruth Rogers Clawson of Cashiers; and a brother, William Lee Rogers of Glenville, N.C.

Funeral services were conducted on March 19 at Malone Funeral Home in Grayson, Ky., with David McGranahan and Kenny Floyd, ministers.

military rites were performed by Grayson VFW Post #3705. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Community Hospice, 1538 Central Ave., Ashland, Ky. 41101.

Louise Willis Brown

CENTRAL, S.C. S Louise Willis Brown, 85, of 308 Maw Bridge Road, Central, S.C., died Monday, March 21, 2005, at her home. She was born in Waynesville to the late Richard Mullintgon and Ella Melissa Moore Willis. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred R. Brown, and one sister, Ora Lee Pressley.

She is survived by a son, Fred R. Brown of Tryon, and one daughter, Carolyn B. Hartwell of Central, S.C.; two sisters, Ruby Lee Johnson of Waynesville and Doris Yelverton; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were conducted Wednesday at the Oconee Memorial Park. The Rev. Elizabeth Patrick officiated. The family asks that in lieu of flowers memorials be made to the Alzheimerls Association Upstate South Carolina, 521 McDuffie St., Anderson, SC 29621. The family will be at the home at other times.

Brown-Oglesby Funeral Home of Seneca, S.C., is in charge of the arrangements.

Larry Head

CANTON S Larry Dean Head, 48, of 84 Wesley St., passed away Sunday, March 20, 2005, at his home. A lifelong resident of Haywood County, he was the son of Virgie Putnam Head of Canton and the late John E. Head, who passed away in 1998. John enjoyed buying and selling at flea market sales throughout our area.

Surviving in addition to his mother are his children: a daughter, Tabatha D. Head of Canton; his sons, Jason Gibson of Waynesville, Josh Gibson of Waynesville; brothers John Head, Jr., of Canton and Jerry Head of Canton.

A graveside funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today at Crawford/Ray Memorial Gardens in Clyde, with the Rev. Matt Pruett officiating. The family will receive friends at Crawford/Ray Funeral Home one hour prior to the graveside service.

Robert W. Sanford

CANTON S Robert Woodrow Sanford, 85, of the Dutch Cove Community died Thursday, March 24, 2005, at St. Jospehls Hospital. Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services of Canton will announce arrangements.

Charles H. Ford, Jr.

ASHEVILLE S Charles Harold ôCharlieö Ford, Jr., 73, of 120 Fordbrook Road, Asheville, died Wednesday, March 23, 2005, at the VA Medical Center.

Born in Chicago, Ill., and a lifelong resident of Buncombe County, he was a son of the late Charles Harold Ford, Sr. and Frances Uzzle Ford. He attended Asheville Biltmore College, N.C. State University and was a U.S. Navy veteran of Korea.

He was a dairy farmer and owned and operated Fordbrook Stables. He was active in the Dairy Association and the farming community and a member of Acton United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Burress Ford; two sons, Mike Ford and his wife, Rhonda, of Asheville and Jeff Ford and his wife, Stacy, of Asheville; a sister, Wynelle ôWendyö Kuykendall and her husband, Jim, of Candler; seven grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Patton Avenue Chapel of Groce Funeral Home, with the Rev. Paul Hacklander and the Rev. Wes Austin officiating.

His family will be at the residence and request that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mountain Area Hospice, P.O. Box 25338, Asheville, NC 28813.

Gary L. DuBois

CANTON, OHIO —Gary L. DuBois, 78, of Maggie Valley, passed away May 29, 2005, at Veterans Medical Center in Canton, Ohio. He was born in Preble, N.Y., Jan. 11, 1927, to the late Floyd and Edith DuBois.

A World War II veteran, DuBois served in Greenland with the Coast Guard. He was a strong and generous man who helped many and was loved by many.

His career included painter, general contractor, utilities contractor, N.Y.S. troop, volunteer fireman, government surplus dealer, Jeep dealer and lastly, a Jeep parts dealer. He loved to work with his hands, deal with customers, tell a joke and get a smile. While in Pompano Beach from 1957 to 1971, he was part of the Exchange Club and put on many of the beach parties.

He was a master mason for more than 25 years at the Homer Lodge 352. Gary enjoyed the mountains, hunting and the outdoors. He is survived by sons, Michael and Jerry DuBois; daughter, Claudia DuBois, all of Florida; brother, Ward DuBois of Homer, N. Y.; sister-in-law, Mattie Hunt of Cortland, N. Y.; five grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, Dana DuBois.

A private memorial service was held by his family and friends at the family hunting camp in Preble on July 23, 2005.

He has left many great times and memories, and he will be missed.

Frances P. Jamerson

WAYNESVILLE —Frances Louise Parris Jamerson, 71, of 55 Anthony Street passed away Monday, Sept. 26, 2005, at her residence.

A native of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late Garrison and Annie Mull Parris. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Jamerson; a granddaughter, Samantha Cagle; one sister; and four brothers.

She loved gospel music and her collection of angels. She was a member of Sulphur Springs Free Will Baptist Church.

She is survived by three sons, Donnie McClure and his wife Lynn, and Harold and Ronnie Cagle, all of Manassas, Va.; one sister, Laura Bell Yarborough and her husband Bob of Waynesville; one brother, Thomas Lewis Parris; and four grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home, with the Rev. Phillip Wyatt officiating. Burial will follow at Green Hill cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Haywood Regional Medical Center Hospice, 560 Leroy George Drive, Clyde, NC 28721.

J. Daniel Whittaker

CANTON —John Daniel “Dan ” Whittaker, 95, of Pisgah Drive, died Sunday, Sept. 25, 2005, at his residence.

He was the son of the late William and Mary Hamon Whittaker, and was a native of Delavan, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his first wife of 65 years, Norma Evelyn Whittaker.

In addition to his second wife of seven years, Bonnie Vance Whittaker, he is survived by a daughter, Bonnie Whittaker Warren and her husband Jeff of Canton; a son, Dr. Ron Whittaker and his wife Nikita of Joshua Tree, Calif.; a sister-in-law, Wanda Whittaker of Mason City, Ill.; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Bethel United Methodist Church, with the Rev. J. C. Krause officiating.

Dorothy E. Poore

WAYNESVILLE —Dorothy Elizabeth Poore, 83, of 1399 Allens Creek Road, passed away on Monday, Sept. 26, 2005, at Haywood Regional Medical Center.

A native of Omaha, Neb., she formerly lived in Virginia, and resided in Haywood County for the past 18 years.

She was the daughter of the late Timothy and Anna Almen. She was also preceded in death by a son, Robert Marvin Poore; and two brothers.

She enjoyed crocheting and pencil drawing. She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Watson Poore; one daughter, Charlene Parker and her husband Bill of Waynesville; two sons, Steve Poore and his wife Naomi of Asheville, and Allen Poore and his wife Pat of Waynesville; seven grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and a nephew, Marvin Norman, of California.

Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, at Hice Hill cemetery, with the Rev. Jim Brackett officiating.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. on Wednesday prior to the service, at Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville.

Serving as pallbearers will be Ronald and Michael Moody, David and Lee Poore, Matt Moon, Tim and Ed Massey, Jr.
