Mark P. Pankiw

WAYNESVILLE —Mark Paul Pankiw, 42, of 100 Alden Avenue, Chattanooga, Tenn., formerly of Waynesville, died Sunday, Sept. 25, 2005, at Haywood Regional Medical Center. He had come to Waynesville to attend his father ’s funeral and his death occurred unexpectedly. A native of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Paul Pankiw, who died Sept. 25, 2005, and Iwanna K. Pankiw of Waynesville.

He was also preceded in death by one sister, Anna Pankiw; and two brothers, Donnie Pankiw and Paul O. Pankiw.

He was a graduate of Tuscola High School where he was a member of the Tennis Team. He was a purchasing agent for Farley ’s and Saylor ’s Candy Company of Chattanooga, Tenn.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by a brother, George Pankiw and his wife Beverly of Macon, Ga.;

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, at St. John ’s Catholic Church of Waynesville, with Father Dennis McGowen officiating. Burial will follow at Green Hill cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 until 8 p.m. Wednesday at Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville.

A rosary service will be conducted at 8:00 p.m. Wednesday.

Mary H. Whitaker

LAKE JUNALUSKA —Mary Herlong Whitaker, 83, of 254 Oxford Road, died Sunday, Sept. 25, 2005, at her residence.

She was born in Johnston, S.C. and was the daughter of the late Henry Hancock and Nettie Rankin Herlong.

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her first husband, the Rev. Dr. John Madison Younginer, who died in 1972; and seven brothers, Homer, Thomas, William, Ben, Henry, Robert, and D. C. Herlong.

She was a graduate of Winthrop University. She was always active in teaching adult Sunday school classes and working with UMW groups. The Mary Younginer Circle in Walterboro, S.C. was named in her honor. She had a love for flowers and was always active in garden clubs in the communities where she resided. She was past president of the Tuscola Garden Club at Lake Junaluska. During her tenure as president, the club was named state garden club of the year. She also served as president of Friends of World Methodist Museum. She was active in numerous activities at Lake Junaluska and was a member of First United Methodist Church of Waynesville.

She is survived by her husband of 24 years, the Rev. Dr. George W. Whitaker; her children, Judy Younginer Liner and her husband Robert of Columbia, S.C., Jan C. Younginer of Greenville, S.C., Jane Younginer Prewett and her husband Ernest of Greenwood, S.C., Joe R. Younginer and his wife Carolyn of Florence, S.C., and the Rev. Dr. John M. Younginer and his wife Lal of North Augusta, S.C.; one brother, Frank Herlong of Johnston, S.C.; and 12 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, at First United Methodist Church of Waynesville, with the Rev. Dr. W. Lyn Sorrells officiating.

The family will receive friends immediately following the services at the church. The interment service will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Greenwood Memorial Gardens in Greenwood, S.C. with the Rev. Dr. John M. Younginer officiating.

Janet L. Arrington

CLYDE —Janet Leavenworth Arrington, 48, died Monday, Sept. 26, 2005, at the Brian Center of Waynesville.

She was a native of Bradford County, Pennsylvania but lived most of her life in Haywood County. She was preceded in death by her father, Donald “Don ” Leavenworth, and was a member of Canton Presbyterian Church. She was a beloved and loving daughter, mother and grandmother.

She is survived by her mother, Dorothee Wells Leavenworth of Clyde; one daughter, Heather Nicole Arrington Osborne and her husband Will of Clyde; one son, Justin Arrington of Canton; and one grandchild, Logan Aaric Osborne.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Homes, with the Rev. Beverly Brock and the Rev. Riley Covin officiating.

Burial will be in Bon-A-Venture cemetery in Clyde. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Multiple Sclerosis Society, 1515 Mockingbird Lane, Charlotte, NC 28209.

James Halasz

WAYNESVILLE —James Halasz, 80, passed away Sunday, Sept. 25, 2005, at his residence.

He was born in Webberville, Mich. April 4, 1925, to the late Joseph and Mary Csercsa Halasz.

He served in the U. S. Army during World War II and the Korean War. He retired from Ford Motor Company and later moved to Waynesville, where he resided for 16 years. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Marian Halasz; six sons James M. and his wife Deborah Halasz of Stauton, Va., Thomas and his wife Helen Halasz of Gainsville, Fla., Ronald and his wife Cathy Halasz of Tecumseh, Mich., Charles and his wife Rita Halasz of Tipton, Mich., Paul and his wife Linda Halasz of Jackson, Mich., and David and his wife Dalva Halasz of Brooklyn, Mich.; one sister, Mary Feddersen of Standish, Mich.; and 10 grandchildren.

A memorial Mass service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, at St. Margaret ’s Catholic Church, with Father Frank Doyle officiating. Hattie H. Harrison Hattie Haynie Harrison, 91, died Monday, Aug. 30, 2004, at Silver Bluff Nursing Home. She was the daughter of the late Victor and Sally Wyke Haynie. She was a member of Ridgeway Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Cowen Harrison, who died in 1979; and a son, David Young, in 2000. Surviving are one daughter, Barbara Miller and her husband, Gary, of Canton; one son, Harry Williams and his wife, Ann, of Candler; two sisters, Jessie Cole of Asheville and Mildred McCants of Virginia; six grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. A graveside service was held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Green Hills cemetery in Asheville with the Rev. Allen Blanton officiating. An online memorial register is available at wellsfuneralhome.com. Lloyd Daniel Tucker Jr.

CANTON — Lloyd Daniel “June Bug” Tucker, Jr., 67, of 21 Oak Street, died Monday, August 30, 2004, at the VA Hospital in Asheville after a five-year battle with cancer. He was native and lifelong resident of Haywood County and was the son of the late Lloyd Daniel Tucker, Sr., and Willard Maggie Whittenburg Tucker. He was a self-employed painter and was a United States Navy veteran. He is survived by his step-mother, Lillian Tucker of Canton and one sister Myrtle White of Canton, two nieces, one nephew, one great-niece and two great-nephews. A graveside service will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 4, 2004, at Gibson Town cemetery with Sister Nellie McCoy officiating. The family will receive friends at the home of Myrtle White, 20 Oak Street, Canton.

William M. “Bill” Green

WAYNESVILLE — William M. “Bill” Green, Jr., 83, of Thomas Park, Waynesville, died Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2004, at Haywood Regional Medical Center. Lucy C. Rogers

CANTON — Lucy Elizabeth Clark Rogers, 92, of 116 Sharp Mountain Road, Canton, died Monday, Aug. 30, 2004, at Silver Bluff Nursing Home following a brief illness. She was a native and lifelong resident of Haywood County and was a daughter of the late L. W. and Clyde Pless Clark. She retired from Dayco in 1977 with 34 years of service and was a member of East Fork Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest W. Rogers, who died in 1958; a son, Ronnie Rogers, a daughter Phyllis Perz; four sisters, Rhoda Smith, Georgia Tatham, Willie Perz and Betty Cope; and a brother, Guy Clark. Surviving are one daughter, Billie Scruggs of Bethel; two sons, Ned L. Rogers and his wife, Martha, of Cruso, and W.R. “Dick” Rogers and his wife, Judy, of Bethel; one sister, Mary Layman of Cruso; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at East Fork Baptist Church with the Revs. Matt Pruett and Johnny Foster officiating. Burial will follow at Gywn cemetery. Wells Funeral Home in Canton is in charge of arrangements. Lori L. Ford STONEVILLE — Lori Land Ford, 34, of 1017 Eden Road, Stoneville, died Sunday, Aug. 29, 2004, at Haywood Regional Medical Center. A native of Columbus, Ga., she was the daughter of Tommy and Mary Hawkins Land of Salisbury. She was a graduate of Pfeiffer University and was a member of the N.C. Association for Certified Public Accountants. She was a member of Spray Baptist Church in Eden and was currently the director of finance and human resources for the city of Eden. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Gordon T. and Thelma Land, and Myrtle and G.A. Hawkins. Surviving in addition to her parents, are her husband, Sam Ford; and father-in-law, DeRoy Ford. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Fair Funeral Home in Eden. Burial will be in Overlook cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Mildred F. Elliott

HOMER, Alaska — Mildred J. Fowler Elliott died Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2004, in Homer, Alaska. She was born Jan. 31, 1916, in Waynesville to the late Richard E. Fowler and Laura M. Galloway Fowler. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leroy “Jimmy” Elliott; three sisters, Thelma Fowler Jones, Anna Belle Fowler Harding and Virginia Fowler Dyer; and one brother, Alfred “Bud” W. Fowler. Surviving are two daughters, Kim and Janet and their families in Anchorage, Alaska; special friends, Hermie Phillips of Asheville; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Floyd F. King

CANTON — Floyd Franklin King, 74, died Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2004, at Haywood Regional Medical Center. He was a native and lifelong resident of Haywood County and was the son of the late Charles Franklin and Hassie Letterman King. He was preceded in death by a son, Charles King. He retired from Champion International with 44 years of service. He formed and directed two great authentic dance teams, Southern Appalachian Cloggers and Great Smoky Mountain Cloggers. He also performed for the Queen of England. Surviving are a daughter, Rebecca Keith and her husband, Greg, of Marietta, Ga.; one sister, Kathleen King Hipps and her husband, Phillip, of Canton, four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Homes and Cremation Services with the Rev. James Parham and Rev. Steve Miller officiating. Rev. Russell Young Jr.

Pharmacist, minister The Rev. Russell Lowell Young Jr., 80, 41 Rolling Green Drive, died Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2002, at Thoms Rehabilitation Hospital. A native of Columbia, S.C., he lived in Haywood County for the past 33 years. He was the son of the late Rev. Russell Lowell Young Sr. and Anne Matilda Snelson Young. He was a graduate of Norwood High School. He was a 1941 graduate of Brevard College and graduated from Duke University in 1943 with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry. He served in the Army during World War II from 1943 until 1946. Following his military service, he graduated from UNC- Chapel Hill with a bachelor’s degree in pharmacy. He accepted a call to enter the ministry and graduated from Duke University with a master’s of divinity in 1953. As a minister, he served the following appointments in the WNC conference of the United Methodist Church: First United Methodist Church of Asheboro, Reeds Charge in Lexington, Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem, Cliffside United Methodist Church, West Jefferson United Methodist Church and First United Methodist Church of Conover. He also served on the staff of the World Methodist Council at Lake Junaluska from 1969 until 1979. He was a pharmacist at Hazelwood Pharmacy for 15 years. He was an Eagle Scout, a former member of the Rotary Club of West Jefferson and was a current member of the Waynesville Kiwanis Club. Surviving are his wife of 46 years, Kathryn Bannister Young; and his daughter, Nancy Y. Ferguson and her husband, Jerry Neil, of Clyde. A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church of Waynesville. The Revs. Drs. W. Lyn Sorrells and John Christy will officiated. Honorary pallbearers were members and spouses of the Waynesville Kiwanis Club. The family received friends immediately following the service at the church. Joan A. Latham

Retired administrator Joan Alsup Latham, 68, of Waynesville, died, Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2002, at her home. A native of Arkansas, she was the daughter of the late Robert Taylor and Mary Florence Dover Alsup. She was preceded in death by her husband, Prentiss Thomas Latham, three brothers, and three sisters. She was an administrator at McCracken Rest Home retiring in 1997 with nine years of service. Surviving are a daughter, Melissa Mehaffey and her husband, John, of Waynesville; three sons, Lynial D. Latham and his wife, Kruamast, of Asheville, the Rev. Taylor Latham and his wife, Sheila, of Stoneville, and Charles Latham and his wife, Deanna Lynn, of Clyde; one sister, Helen Lowe of Lake Junaluska; one brother, William “Duke” Alsup of Palestine, Ark.; and eight grandchildren. Services were held at 3 p.m. Friday at Wells Funeral Home in Waynesville. The Revs. J.D. Grant and Todd West officiated. Burial was in Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. H. Jackson Jenkins

Champion retiree, veteran CANTON — Howard Jackson “Jack” Jenkins, 76, of 269 Circle Drive, Canton, died Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2002, at Mission St. Joseph’s Health System. A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Ralph and Lena Ivester Jenkins. He retired from Champion International in 1989 with 40 years of service and was a member of West Canton Baptist Church. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, having served on the YMS 440 Mine Sweeper in the South Pacific. Surviving are his wife of 56 years, MayBell Fox Jenkins; two daughters, Martha Elizabeth Good of Madison Heights, Mich., and Cheryl Ann Jenkins of Canton; two sons and their wives, Howard David and Margaret Jenkins of Clarksville, Tenn., and Robert B. and Sandra Jenkins of Belgium; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Services were held at 4 p.m. Friday at Wells Funeral Home in Canton. The Revs. James Huey and W.O. “Bill” Henson officiated. Masonic rites were conducted by the Pigeon River Lodge No. 386 A.F. & A.M. of which he was a member. Burial was in Crawford/Ray Memorial Gardens with graveside military honors conducted by the Navy. WNC Paving employee Joseph Daniel “Bud” Moore, 60, of Waynesville, died Aug. 27, 2002. A native of Waynesville, he was the son of the late Davis and Bertha Teague Moore. He worked for W.N.C. Paving. Surviving are two sons, William and Scott Moore, both of Buford, Ga.; three daughters, Teresa and Sonya Moore, both of Waynesville, and Amanda Pope of Canton; a brother, Bill Moore of Waynesville; three sisters, Stella Sutton of Lawrence, Ga., Betty Sue Carangelo of Snailsville, Ga.. and Sarah Moore. CANTON — William Ronald “Ronnie” Rogers, 56, of Canton, died Thursday, Aug. 29, 2002. Wells Funeral Home, Canton will announce the arrangements.

Dorothy C. Whisenhunt

Medical secretary Dorothy Charlotte Whisenhunt, 75, of Waynesville, died Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2002, at her home. A native of Buncombe County, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Ethel Roberts Whisenhunt. She was a medical secretary. Surviving are two brothers, Murray R. and Don R. Whisenhunt, both of Waynesville; and two sisters, Katherine Duval of Waynesville and Alice W. Falls of Austin, Texas. Private graveside services were held earlier. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Covenant Presbyterian Church. The Revs. Larry Jones and David Morgan will officiate. Burial will be in Greenhill cemetery. Florence D. Nichols

Real estate agent BALSAM — Florence Doan Nichols, 95, of 7 Dogwood Lane, Balsam, died Thursday, Aug. 29, 2002, at Raulerson Hospital in Okeechobee, Fla. A native of Joplin, Mo., she had lived most of her life in West Palm Beach and Hollywood, Fla. She was a Sunday School teacher at Dellwood Baptist Church for most of her life. She was one of the first members of the Sheridan Hills Baptist Church in Hollywood, Fla. She was a volunteer for the Salvation Army. She worked in the post office during the World War II era, secretary to a Palm Beach County doctor, owned and managed the Garden of Eden Nursery in West Palm Beach and Hollywood, Fla. For the past 45 years, she was a real estate agent. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert C. Nichols, who died in 1987. Surviving are four sons, Kenneth R. Nichols Sr. of Okeechobee, Walter R. Nichols and wife, Jackie, of Merced, Calif., James C. Nichols and wife, Sara, of Balsam, and Dr. Cecil B. Nichols and wife, Malena, of Hollywood; one brother, Billy Bob Doan of Meadowbridge, W.Va.; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Services will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church in Okeechobee, Fla. The Rev. James Garner will officiate. Burial will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Hollywood Memorial Gardens. A reception will follow the services at 3725 S. Ocean Drive, Hollywood. CORAL GABLES, Fla. — Ann Howard Spaulding Metzger of Coral Gables, Fla., died Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2002, at her home. She was the daughter of the late William and Lillian Spaulding. She was a member of the First Church of Christ Scientist in Waynesville. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Paul Metzger. Private services will be held at a later date. James B. Donaldson

Ethan Allen retiree, veteran James Bell Donaldson, 71, died Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2002, at his home. A native of Macon County, he was a former resident of Madison County and resided in Haywood County since 1961. He was the son of the late James Harvie and Eva Doshia McFalls Donaldson. He was a machinist employed by Ethan Allen Furniture Co. for 15 years until his retirement. He was an Army veteran having served during the Korean War. He was a member of First Reformed Baptist Church in Waynesville. Surviving are his wife of 42 years, JoAnn Allen Donaldson; two daughters, Charlene Rene Donaldson of the home, and Leisa Donaldson Hefner of Candler; and one granddaughter. Services were held at 11 a.m. Friday at Wells Funeral Home in Waynesville. The Revs. Jack Jaynes, Bob Marshall and Jimmy Moore officiated. Burial was in Woody cemetery. Pallbearers were Howard Turner, Terry Lance, Van Hefner, Jeffrey Moore, Jeremy Trantham and Steve Donaldson. Doyle W. Gunter

Business owner WHITTIER — Doyle W. Gunter, 71 of Whirlwind Drive, Whittier, died Saturday, Aug. 24, 2002, at Mission St. Joseph’s Health System. A native of Swain County, he was the son of Florence Phillips Gunter of Whittier and the late Oscar Gunter. He was owner and operator of the Reservation IGA Foodliner. He was a member of Hyatts Chapel Baptist Church where he served as deacon chairman, Sunday school teacher, choir member and supported and participated in missions. He was a Navy veteran having served during the Korean War. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 46 years, Margaret Peterson Gunter; two sons, the Rev. Steve Gunter and wife, Margie; and Rick Gunter, both of Whittier; three sisters, Linda Parris of Canton, Hazel Young and Juanita Turpin, both of Whittier; and six grandchildren. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Hyatts Chapel Baptist Church. The Revs. Steve Gunter, Steve Webb and Tom Harris will officiate. Burial will be in the Gunter cemetery. Pallbearers will be Roy Ball, Russ Bradley, Kent Moore, Larry Gunter, Richard Sneed and Robin Young. All ministers will serve as honorary pallbearers. Mervin E. Terry
Navy veteran Mervin E. “Merv” Terry, 66, of 1234 A. Crabtree Road, Waynesville., died Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2002, at Haywood Regional Medical Center. A native of Dixon, Ill., he was the son of the late Frank R. and Theresa Hohlen Terry. He was a veteran of the Korean War having served in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of the Elks Lodge, Am Vets, American Legion, Lake Junaluska Golf Course, Mount Dora Florida Golf Association and the Baytree Florida Golf Club. Surviving are his wife, Barbara Thompson Terry of Tavares, Fla., and Waynesville; two daughters, Cynthia Terry Hawthorne of Leesburg, Fla., and Brenda Terry Hyre of Grand Island, Fla.; three sisters, Kristy Brown of Tavares, Kimberly Folgore of Eustis, Fla., and May Haines of Sorrento, Fla.; one step-son, Adam Haines of Fla.; three sisters, Maryanne Zarder of Atlanta, Ga., Dorothy Rhodes of Dixon, and Sue Raskam of Hover, Ala.; three brothers, Don Terry of Apple River, Ill., Chuck Terry of Deland, Fla., and Leroy Terry of Pinson, Ala.; two grandchildren and two step-grandsons. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Wells Funeral Home in Waynesville. The Rev. Mike Shuford will officiate. Virginia B. Brown

Alabama native MORGANTON — Virginia Brooks Brown, 81, of West Union St., Morganton, formerly of Canton, died Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2002, at her home. A native of Geneva County, Ala., she was the daughter of the late Morris Cleveland Brooks Sr. and Leota Slocomb Brooks. She was a former member of the Central United Methodist Church in Canton. She is a member of the First Baptist Church in Morganton. She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Robert Brown Jr.; two brothers, William Brooks and M.C. Brooks, Jr. Surviving are two sons, David Brown and wife, Kimberly, of Morganton, and Samuel Morris Brown and wife, Judy, of Rocky Mount; one brother, Robert Brooks of Pensacola, Fla.; one sister, Nora Reeves of Dothan, Ala.; and three grandchildren. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church Chapel. The Revs. Dr. Thomas A. Bland Jr. and Fred Schuszler will officiate. Burial will follow at the McDowell Memorial Park in Marion. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the church. Joyce W. Beck

ROGERSVILLE, Tenn. — Joyce Wood Beck, 46, of Rogersville, Tenn., died Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2002. Wells Funeral Home in Canton is in charge of arrangements.

Dr. Ralph Feichter

Dr. Ralph Norbert Feichter, 73, of Waynesville, died March 2, 2005, from complications due to Parkinson’s disease.

Born in Milwaukee, Wis., Feb. 25, 1932, he grew up in Chicago next to Wrigley Field, home of the “Chicago Cubs.” He moved with his parents, Martha and Leo Feichter, and siblings, Rex, Ilse and Mark to Waynesville at the age of 14, where he waited tables at his family’ restaurant business, The Lodge.

He graduated from St. John’s High School in Waynesville in 1949, attended Notre Dame University from 1949 to 1952 and Northwestern University Medical School from 1953 to 1956 in Chicago. He interned at Philadelphia General and did his residency in internal medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. Following his residency, he served two years in the Navy as a lieutenant commander at the Charleston, S.C. Naval Hospital until he returned to Haywood County where he practiced internal medicine from 1964 until 1996.

He was known by his fellow physicians as, “The one who brought specialized medicine to Haywood County.” He built a practice modeled on the Mayo Clinic’s team approach by creating a multi-specialist practice where physicians are patient advocates who find solutions through consultation with each other as well as with national experts. His special interest in cardiac care helped establish one of the first mobile coronary care units in the United States. The Haywood County Rescue Squad became nationally recognized as a leading community rescue service.

In the early 1970s, he was among the leadership citizens who championed the need for a new hospital. He served as chairman of the bond issue and consulted prominent architect, Gordon Frieden, on “how to build the best community hospital in the nation.” He was a charter member of the Haywood County Hospital Building Fund, which later became the Haywood Regional Medical Center Foundation and was named the first Lifetime Honorary Trustee of the Haywood Regional Medical Center Foundation in 1997. In 1998, the Ralph Feichter Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation Center was dedicated in his name.

A humanitarian and an advocate for healthcare, he was an avid runner, skier, world traveler and an amateur photographer of nature. He ran in many marathons but was most proud of qualifying and running in the Boston Marathon three times.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Martha and Leopold Feichter; and his brother, Mark Feichter.

Surviving are his wife of 43 years, Mary Frank, six children and 14 grandchildren, Sarah and Allen Aldridge and Mary, Emily, Rachel and Sophia of Marietta, Ga.; Martha and Morrie Ruffin and Ned, Carter and Harry of Washington, D.C.; Leslie and Shada Mattern and Meredith, Lucas and Mackenzie, of Sevierville, Tenn.; Eric Feichter of Waynesville; Rachel Feichter and Steven Wolfe and Helena, of Washington, DC; and Jennifer and Tim Moore and Jacob, Lydia and Micailah, of Lake Stevens, Wash.

Also surviving him are his brothers, Rex Feichter of Waynesville, his sister, Ilse Shaw of Chapel Hill, his sister-in-law, Carol Feichter Binford of Waynesville and their families.

A memorial service celebrating the life of Dr. Feichter will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Haywood County Rescue Squad, P.O. Ruby G. Mann

BETHEL — Ruby Griffin Mann, 78, of Bethel , died Wednesday, March 2, 2005, at Haywood Regional Medical Center.

She was a native and lifelong resident of Haywood County and was a daughter of the late Arthur Griffin and Gertrude Watson. S was preceded in death by a son, Larry Mann.

Surviving are her husband, Troy William “Bill” Mann of Bethel; one daughter; Diane Ford and her husband; Benny; of Clyde; one son, Gary Mann of Bethel; one sister, Sue Campfield and her husband, Ralph, of Lexington, N.C.; one brother, Duey Griffin and his wife, Jan, of Walhalla, S.C.; four grandchildren, Candy Smith and her husband, Ricky, Tonya Ford, Wayne Mann and his wife, Lawanda, and Dusty Ford and his wife, Jennifer; and seven great-grandchildren, Michael Ford, Matthew Best, Morgan Smith, Jonathan Mann, Chevy Smith, Dawson Smith and Christopher Mann.

Services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Homes and Cremation Services. The Rev. Dr. Roy Kilby will officiate. Burial will follow at Bethel Community cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2:45 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the residence of Bill Mann, 424 Sunny Drive, Waynesville.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 90 Stiles Road, Canton, NC 28716.
