Arthur J. Ambrose

CONWAY, S.C. — Arthur Jennings Ambrose, 90, died Wednesday Aug. 10, 2005, at Marion County Medical Center.

Ambrose was born May 27, 1915, in Conway, S.C., a son of the late Arthur Leland and Mattie Burgess Page Ambrose.

He was a Coast Guard Veteran and retired from the United States Postal Service. He was a member of Aynor United Methodist Church. He and his wife, Pauline ‘Pat’, also had a home in Maggie Valley until the mid-1990’s. There they attended Peachtree United Methodist Church.

He was predeceased by his wife, Pauline Floyd Ambrose; two brothers, Donald Ambrose and Vernon Ambrose; one sister and brother-in-law, Wilma and Jack Sherrill; one sister-in-law, Eula Mae Dawsey Ambrose. Surviving are one sister, Myrtice Perry and husband George of Charlotte; three brothers, William Ambrose and his wife Hilda, Berry Ambrose, and Robert Ambrose, all of Aynor, S.C.; one sister-in-law, Lucille Ambrose of Galivants Ferry, S.C.; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Aug. 12, 2005, at Aynor United Methodist Church, and burial followed at Aynor cemetery.

Myrtle Baker Huntley

RUHERFORDTON — Myrtle Baker Huntley, 83, died Monday, Aug. 15, 2005, at Hospice House of Rutherford County.

A native of Rutherford County, she was the widow of the late Joseph B. Huntley and the daughter of the late Albert and Flora Falin Baker.

She was a long-time member of First Baptist Church of Rutherfordton and was active in all aspects of the church. She will be remembered for her loyalty and expertise in decorating for church functions.

She is survived by two daughters, Linda Lutz of Waynesville and Candy Ruppe of Forest City; a sister, Flora Wheeler of Natick, Mass.; five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church of Ruherfordton, with the Rev. Dean Baughn officiating.

Burial will follow at Rutherford County Memorial cemetery. The body will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service.

The family will receive friends after the service in the church sanctuary.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Rutherford County. PO Box 336, Forest City, NC 28043.

Sarah Phillips

ASHEVILLE — Sarah Louise Phillips, 82, formerly of Haywood County, died on Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2005, at her residence.

Wells Funeral Homes and Cremation Services of Waynesville is in charge of arrangements.

Pansy Y. Medford

CANTON — Pansy Young Medford, 83, of 137 Vista Lane, died Sunday, Oct. 9, 2005, at her residence.

She was a native and lifelong resident of Haywood County and was the daughter of the late Lyda Columbus and Mamie Elizabeth Smith Young. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Fred C. Trantham, who died in 1968 and a daughter, Carolyn T. Pace, who died in 1996; two sisters, Louise Whitted and Marie Fletcher; and two brothers, Robert and Cecil Young.

She was a homemaker and member of Oak Grove Baptist Church.

She is survived by her husband, Lewin L. Medford; one daughter, Freida Towe of Canton; two sons, Thomas Trantham and his wife Shirley of Weaverville and Bruce Trantham and his wife Kathy of Hendersonville; one step- daughter, Loretta Rector of Johnstown, Ohio, and one step-son, Erwin Medford of Grantville, Ga.; two sisters, Polly Hall of Candler and Mary Rose of Burlington; one brother, Benny Young and his wife Ruth of Canton: eleven grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home, with the Rev. Bruce Cayton officiating. Burial will follow at Bon-A-Venture cemetery on Old Clyde Road. The family will receive friends on Tuesday prior to the services from 12:30 until 2 p.m.

Helen S. Hunter

WAYNESVILLE — Helen S. Hunter, 75, of 48 Lauren Drive, died on Saturday, Oct. 8, 2005, at Haywood Regional Medical Center.

A native of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late Pinkney and Nellie Moore Sorrells.

She is survived by one daughter, Debra McClure of Waynesville; one son, Donnie Hunter of Waynesville; and one grandson, Tyler.

A private graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Green Hill cemetery, with the Rev. Walter Sorrells officiating.

Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville is in charge of arrangements.

Ernest S. Wood, Jr.

CLYDE — Ernest Samuel Wood Jr., 62, of Liner Creek Road, died Saturday, Oct. 8, 2005, at his residence.

He was a native and lifelong resident of Haywood County. He was the son of the late Ernest Samuel and Thelma Todd Wood Sr. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Joyce Beck.

Mr. Wood was employed by American Enka and was a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Judy Gentry Wood; one daughter, Sherry Wood Hill and her husband, Ricky of Clyde; one brother, Lonnie Wood of Robbinsville; and two grandchildren, Ernie and Mary Hill.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Rock Springs Baptist Church with the Rev. Charlie Simpson, the Rev. Mark Caldwell and the Rev. Jennings Sizemore officiating. Burial will follow at Crabtree Community cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Monday at Wells Funeral Home in Canton.

Helen S. Sharp

CANTON — Helen Stamey Sharp, 84, of Hilltop Farm Road died Friday, Oct. 7, 2005, at her residence.

She was a native and lifelong resident of Haywood County. She was the daughter of the late Frank Jay and Lottie Alan Stamey.

Mrs. Sharp was a homemaker and was a member of the local chapters of the American Legion and VFW.

She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Clyde “Fat” Sharp; one daughter, Cookie Sharp; one son, Denver Sharp and his wife Terry, all of Canton; two sisters, Evelyn Hargett of Jacksonville, Fla., and Bettie Warren of Goosecreek, S.C.; three grandchildren, Jackie Sharp Fisher and her husband Mark of Clemson, S.C., Danny Sharp and his wife Medea and Mike Sharp and his wife Lynette, all of Canton; eight great-grandchildren, James “J.C.,” Jacob and Isaac Fisher, Mary Beth, Derick and Zac Sharp, Amber Hill and Tonya Henline; and one great-great-grandchild, Morgan Hill.

There will be a graveside memorial service at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Bon- A-Venture cemetery, Old Clyde Road. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. prior to the service at Wells Funeral Home in Canton. Maxine S. Gathmann

FAIRVIEW — Maxine Stamey Gathmann died Friday, Oct. 7, 2005, at St. Joseph Hospital. She was a native of Haywood County, but resided in Fairview. She was a daughter of the late Lawrence and Rosa Faye Sisk Stamey and was the wife of the late Gerald Owen Gathmann, who died in 2004. Mrs. Gathmann was also preceded in death by a son, Gerald Mark Gathmann, who died in 1978; a sister, Colleen S. Bowman; and a brother, Lawrence Stamey Jr.

She retired from Ingles with 16 years of service. She enjoyed ceramics and crafts and also floral arranging.

She is survived by one son, Gregory Lawrence Ingram of Apex; two sisters, Betty Ray of Clyde and Barbara Warren of Candler; three step-daughters, Sheryl Judd of Lincoln, Ill., Sharon Stuckey of Canton, Ill., and Karen Gathmann of Morton, Ill; and a step-son, Greg, of San Jose, Ill. She was very fond of her Boston terrier dog named Shaver.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Bethany United Methodist Church in Fairview, with the Rev. Glenda Bramlet and the Rev. H.D. Houck officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family received friends Sunday evening at Wells Funeral Home in Canton.

Nannie Fisher Howell

CANTON — Nannie Fisher Howell, 87, died Thursday, Oct. 6, 2005, at Haywood Regional Medical Center.

She was a native of Jackson County but had resided in Haywood County for 56 years. She was a daughter of the late Rufus Wilburn and Minnie Allen Fisher and the wife of the late Elwood Lewis Howell, who died in May 2005. Mrs. Howell was preceded in death by five brothers and one son, Elwood Lewis Howell Jr., who died at birth.

She was a member of Welcome Hill Baptist Church, where she was a former Sunday school teacher and choir member. She enjoyed canning, sewing and making drapes. Mrs. Howell made drapes for Virginia James, which went into Wells Funeral Home in Canton.

She is survived by one daughter, Judy Hyatt and her husband Alex of Clyde; one sister, Eunice Parris of Louisville, Ky.; three grandsons, Robbie Hyatt of Greenville, S.C., Jason Hyatt and his wife Kerrie of Canton and Blake Hyatt of Canton; and two great-grandchildren, Tyler and Ryleigh Hyatt. Funeral services were at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home, with the Rev. Carl Chastain and the Rev. Chris Jennings officiating. Burial followed in Sunny Point Baptist Church cemetery. The family received friends prior to the service at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at 50 Howell Road in Canton.

Edward L. Tullis

LAKE JUNALUSKA — Bishop Edward L. Tullis, 88, died at his Lake Junaluska home on Thursday, Oct, 6, 2005, following a short illness.

Bishop Tullis was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, and attended high school in northern Kentucky. He received his A.B. degree from Kentucky Wesleyan College and was ordained in the Methodist Episcopal Church South in 1939. He earned a B.D. degree from Louisville Theological Seminary and holds honorary degrees from Kentucky Wesleyan College, Union College, Wofford College, Lambuth University, and Claflin College. Bishop Tullis served pastorates in Frenchburg, Lawrenceburg, Louisville, Irvine, Frankfurt and Ashland, Ky. He served for five years as a national church extension secretary. Elected to the Episcopacy in 1972, he was assigned to the Columbia, S.C., area from 1972-1980 and the Nashville, Tenn., area from 1980-1984. Throughout his career, Bishop Tullis took a leadership role in civil rights and women’s rights in both the church and community.

Bishop Tullis believed a minister should be a minister for life, and for 20 years after his retirement, he taught an inter-generational Sunday school class at Long’s Chapel United Methodist Church, Lake Junaluska. He served with great pride and devotion as the secretary/treasurer of the Magee Christian Foundation for more than 50 years. Bishop Tullis is the author of “First Church Sermons,” “Shaping the Church from the Mind of Christ” and “Birth of the Book: The Story of the Origin and Growth of the Bible.” He recently completed a history of the Magee Christian Education Foundation.

Bishop Tullis and the late Mary Jane Tullis have two children, Frank L. Tullis of Williamsburg, Va., and Jane Allen Offut of Georgetown, Ky.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

In 1997 Bishop Tullis married Katharine Crum Irwin who has two sons, Frank Jr. of Carolina Beach and Mason Crum Irwin of Sevierville, Tenn., and a daughter, Katharine, deceased. A memorial service celebrating the life of Bishop Tullis will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Long’s Chapel United Methodist Church. The Rev. Robert E. Fuquay Jr. will conduct the service with other participants, including the Rev. Woody Adams, Bishop William Willimon, Bishop William Morris and Bishop Charlene Kammerer. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church.

Robert L. Henson

CANTON — Robert Lee Henson, 72, died Wednesday, May 24, 2006, at Haywood Regional Medical Center. He was a native and lifelong resident of Haywood County and the son of the late Rufus and Bessie Wooten Henson. He was preceded in death by a brother, James Weldon Henson and a sister, Hilda Henson Mann. He retired from Champion International in 1997 with 23 years of service as a forklift operator. He was a member of Dutch Cove Baptist Church. Henson was a volunteer firefighter with the Center Pigeon Fire Department for 37 years and was the assistant fire chief for more than 10 years. He was a United States Army veteran serving during the Korean Conflict. Robert had a special place in his heart for his family, especially his grandchildren. In addition to his wife of 48 years, Mary Lou Henson, he is survived by a daughter, Susan Henson Dailey of Canton; a son, Wentfard Lee Henson and wife, Wilma, of Clyde; five sisters, Lillian Clark and husband, Ted, of Waynesville; Betty Henson of Canton, Mavis Henson of Canton, Mary Lou Henson and husband, Vanise, of Canton and Nancy Wilson and husband, Sherrill, of Candler; two grandchildren, Alicia Henson and Kendall Dailey, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Canton chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Rev. Bruce Cayton and the Rev. Darryl Hannah officiating. Burial will follow at Morning Star cemetery. James E. Summey

CANTON — James “Jim” Evert Summey, 66, of North Canton Road died Monday, May 22, 2006, at Haywood Regional Medical Center. He was a native and lifelong resident of Haywood County and the son of the late Howard and Ella Grooms Summey. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles and Gene Summey and a sister, Ethel Stamey. He was employed with Haywood County Schools and was a member of Phillipsville Church of God. Jim was a sweet and caring man. He was a devoted husband, loving father, and grandfather. As a hobby, he raised and cared for miniature ponies. In addition to his wife of 45 years, Geneva Brown Summey, he is survived by two daughters, Debbie Summey and Freida McCall, both of Clyde; two sons, Ernest L. “Boney” Summey and his wife, Teresa, and Clayton Thomas Brown and his wife, Pennie, all of Canton; 11 grandchildren, Monica, Renee, Tasha, Sherry, Leeann, Tracie, Chasity, Tiffany, Anthony, Christina, and Autumn; and seven great-grandchildren, James Tyler, Joshua, Chase, Blake, Scott, Leigha, and Dylan. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today at the Canton chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Rev. Calvin Brown, the Rev. Bruce Cayton, and the Rev. Ted Reynolds officiating. Rachel L. Greene

WAYNESVILLE — Rachel Lucinda James Greene, 81, of the Fines Creek Community, went to be with Jesus on Tuesday, May 23, 2006. Born on July 27, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Larry and Doshie James. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 44 years, Arthur Greene, who always stood by her side; two grandchildren, Wayne Ledford and Helen Greene; and several brothers and sisters, Nancy, Horace, Rosie, William, Sylvania Ann, and Bertha. She was a loving wife, momma, grandma, sister, aunt, and a friend to all. She was the heart of her family and will be greatly missed and always remembered with love. She touched the lives of many people. She never turned anyone away from her home or her heart. She was a long-time member of Fines Creek United Methodist Church. She left behind to cherish her memories three daughters, Neta Mae Rabb and her husband, Doc, of the Fines Creek Community, Shirley Ledford and her husband, Johnny, of the Crabtree Community, Mary Jane Everhart and her husband, Mark, of Cherokee; two sons, L. J. Greene and his wife, Evelyn, Jim Greene, and his wife, Bobbie, all of Fines Creek; 14 grandchildren, Hugh, Doyle, Sandra, Juanita, Tammy, Richard, Janet, Tony, Andy, Larry, Crystal, Arthur, John, and Shelby; 12 great grandchildren, Daniel, Alina, Dominique, Dewayne, Bryan, Cody, Daniel, John, Holly, Rachel, Anita, and Kayla; and one great-great granddaughter, Americus. Margaret H. Hall

CLYDE — Margaret Haynes Hall, 90, formerly of Caring Place Loop, died Tuesday, May 23, 2006, at Stroud Nursing Home in Marietta, S.C. She was the daughter of the late W.V. and Georgia Cockrell Haynes Sr. She was also preceded in death by her husband, John Oscar Hall, who died in 1998; one son, Alan Duane Hall, one grandson, Duane Coleman Hall; one sister, Francis Patrick, and one brother, W.V. Haynes, Jr. She worked in the cafeteria at North Canton Elementary School and volunteered in both the Haywood County Hospital and Civil Defense. She was a member of the Clyde First Baptist Church where she enjoyed singing in the choir. She is survived by one son, Ronald “Ronnie” Hall and his wife, Nina, of Greer, S.C.; two sisters, Alta “Billie” Davis of Asheville and Janell Rathbone of Clyde; a granddaughter, Rhonda Hall Cartee, of Greer, S.C. and a grandson, Dr. John Lane Hall, of Pacifica, Calif. Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. today in the Canton chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Rev. James Parham and the Rev. W.O. Henson officiating. Jerome J. Clark

Canton – Jerome Johnson “Spider” Clark, 79, died Monday, May 22, 2006, at Canton Christian Convalescent Center. He was a native and lifelong resident of Haywood County and the son of the late Joshua and Ethel Grogan Clark. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Jane Chapman Clark who died in 1999. He is survived by a daughter, Vickie Clark, of Asheville; a son, Terry J. Clark and his wife, Deborah, of Fairfax, Va.; three sisters, Shirlie Dameron of Greenville, S.C., Ruth Cabe of Canton and Frances Tapp of Floral City, Fl.; a granddaughter, Donna Ray; and two great-granddaughters Brandy Clark Welker and Haley McFalls Welker. Lewis Messer

ASHEVILLE — Lewis Hardin “Red” Messer, 83, of 6 Starnes Cove Drive, died Wednesday, May 24, 2006, at Aston Park Health Care Center. He was a native of Haywood County and the son of the late Charlie and Sara Lee Messer. He retired from Coca-Cola in 1985 with 38 years of service as a salesman. He was a member of Starnes Cove Baptist Church and a member of the North Carolina Baptist Association Lay Witness Foundation. He was a United States Army veteran of World War II. In addition to his wife of 60 years, Catherine Worley Messer, he is survived by two daughters, Barbara Ann Moody and husband, Philip, of Concord and Doris Messer Hardin of Asheville; a sister, Wilsie Shipman; four grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren. Lavada Moody Burgess

WAYNESVILLE — Lavada Mae Moody Burgess, 78, of the Hemphill Community, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, May 24, 2006. A native and life-long resident of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late James M. and Beulah Caldwell Moody. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Brown Burgess, who died in 1999. She was a homemaker and enjoyed working in her garden, making meals for her family and friends and making quilts. She was a member of Hemphill Baptist Church and will be greatly missed by all of her special friends and family. She is survived by a daughter, Charlene Russell, of Waynesville; a son, Buddy Burgess and his wife, Carolyn, of Maggie Valley; one sister, Dorothy Burgess, of Waynesville; one grandchild, Erica Burgess, of Waynesville; and one grandchild by choice, Lee Mathis. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 27, 2006, in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Rev. Billy Ferguson, the Rev. Dewayne Rathbone and the Rev. James Parham

CANTON — James “Jim” Truett Parham, 76, of 215 Painter Street passed away Wednesday, May 24, 2006, at Haywood Regional Medical Center. A native of Buncombe County, he was the son of the late Rev. Otto Parham and Minnie Edmonds Parham. He had resided most of his life in Canton and was a U.S. Army veteran serving in Hawaii. He retired from Champion International in 1992 with 30 years of service and was a Champion Old Timer. He was a dedicated member of West Canton Baptist Church where he served as an usher, was president of The Glen Frady Men’s Sunday School Class and also had served as president of the Good Life Club. He was an avid gardener and enjoyed spending time at Lake Chatuge. Most importantly, Jim deeply loved his family and his home. He was preceded in death by his brother, Bill Parham Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Betty Jean Kilpatrick Parham; his daughter, Tina Daniels and her husband, Jon, of Salina, Kan.; his sons, David Parham and his wife, Janice, of Canton and Donnie Parham and his wife, Cheryl, of Asheville; sisters, Viola Stuart of Canton, Connie Jenkins of Waynesville and Betty Caldwell of Waynesville; his grandchildren Valerie, Tiffany, Nicholas and Adam. The funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Crawford / Ray Funeral Home and Cremation Services with the Rev. Jimmy Huey, the Rev. George Holley and the Rev. Bill Henson officiating. Entombment will be in The Horizon at Crawford / Ray Memorial Gardens in Clyde. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home and also from 1:30 until 3 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home prior to the funeral service. Memorials may be made to West Canton Baptist Church, New Building Fund, 75 Lowe Street, Canton NC 28716.
