Minnie Banks

Minnie Banks, 87, of 1196 Sulphur Springs Road, Waynesville, passed away Thursday, April 19, 2007, at Skyland Care Center in Sylva.
A native of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late William and Dora Green McClure. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 28 years, Horace Banks, who died in 1984; four brothers, Fred, William Lee Jr., Frank and Gene McClure; and two sisters, Ada Mills and Nancy Plott. She loved her family and roses.
She is survived by one son, Gary Banks and his wife Debbie of Waynesville; two sisters, Mary Lou Wright of Canton and Charlene Towe and her husband John of Windsor, Va.; one grandson, Cody Banks; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was held at 4 p.m. Sunday in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Rev. Terry Rowland officiating. Burial followed at Green Hill cemetery. The family received friends from 2 until 4 p.m. prior to the service.

Max N. Van Hook

Max N. Van Hook, 91, of Waynesville, passed away Thursday, April 19, 2007, at Chestnut Park Rest Home. He was the son of the late Naomi Fulcher and James Van Hook. He is also preceded in death by two brothers, Nelson and Donald Van Hook and a sister, Hilda Callahan.
He was a World War II veteran and served in the U.S. Army. He was also a member of North Hazelwood Baptist Church.Ê
He is survived by his nieces, Jo Ann Van Hook McElrath and husband Buddy of Candler and Betty Callahan Martin of Aiken, S.C.; several great-nieces and nephews as well as his extended family at Chestnut Park Rest Home where he resided for the last 21 years.
A graveside service was held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Forest Lawn Memorial Park with the Rev. Roy Houston officiating. The family received friends in the chapel of Faith at Forest Lawn one hour prior to the service.
military honors will be conducted by Enka High Air Force JROTC.
Moore Funeral Home at Forest Lawn, Candler is assisting the family.

Olive Marie Grandstaff

BLACK MOUNTAIN - Olive Marie Minor Grandstaff, 88, died Wednesday, April 18, 2007, at Highland Farms Retirement Community.
The daughter of the late Marion and Lyla Minor of McMechen, W. Va., she worked as a waitress and helped operate a family-run motel business in Black Mountain. She was a member of Black Mountain Presbyterian Church.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Albert Minor of McMechen; her husband, Ralph A. Grandstaff of Black Mountain; and her daughter, Sylvia D. Studenc of Black Mountain.
Surviving are her grandchildren, William J. Studenc Jr. of Waynesville, Gregory A. Studenc of Black Mountain, and Scott D. Studenc of Hilton Head, S.C.; and four great-grandchildren, Geneva D. Studenc and William J. Studenc III of Waynesville, and Brennen S. Studenc and Anzlee R. Studenc of Hilton Head, S.C.
A private family service will be held. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.

Edwin Trantham

CLYDE - Edwin Trantham, 71, of 163 Trantham Drive, died Thursday, April 19, 2007, at Haywood Regional Medical Center.
A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Homer and Maggie Beasley Trantham. He was an auto mechanic before retiring and worked for the Haywood County Recycling Center. He was a member of Belmont Baptist Church. He loved to farm and trout fish and was a former member of the Masonic Lodge of Canton.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Juanita Trantham; one daughter, Linda Burgess, of Clyde; one son, Lee Trantham and his wife Belinda of Clyde; four grandchildren, Jonathan Cagle, Cassie Cagle, Mekayla Trantham and Tracy Trantham.Ê
A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Revs. Johnny Swanger and Carl Chastain officiating. Burial followed in the Pine Grove cemetery

Melvin Lancaster

Melvin B. Lancaster, 76, of Waynesville passed away at the Durham Hospital in Durham Thursday, April 19, 2007.
He was born in Cleveland County Feb. 28, 1931, to the late William Jesse and Stella Bessie Matheney Lancaster.
A graduate of Western Carolina University, he worked for Wellco in several capacities. He left Wellco for a few years to become the town manager of Waynesville. He returned to Wellco where he worked in administration before retiring in 1993. His family expressed his love for the Mountaineer Little League. He served as umpire, coach and treasurer working with them for 32 years, and was also an avid Duke basketball fan. He was a founding member of the Covenant Presbyterian Church serving as ruling elder, clerk of session, treasurer and taught Sunday school.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years Martha Crafton Lancaster; three sons Michael Lancaster of Waynesville, Matthew Lancaster and his wife Jennifer of Newton and Mark Lancaster of Waynesville; three grandchildren Grace Carol Lancaster, William Jesse Lancaster and Benjamin Alan Lancaster; three sisters Julia Williams of Mt. Eula, Sarah Nell Bowles of Mooresville and Lois Gant of Huntersville; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Garrett Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight at the funeral home and at other times at the familiesÕ home. The Rev. Larry Jones and Matthew Lancaster will officiate the services.
Burial will be in the Garrett Hillcrest Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Jack Lyle, Joe Morrow, Bill Lupton, Roger Hampton, Kenny Mull and Mike Gentry.

Clinton 'Bob' Dunn

Clinton Robert Dunn, 70, of Waynesville, passed away peacefully at his residence Friday, April 20, 2007.
He was born Dec. 2, 1936, to the late Robert and Norma Ramsey Dunn in Casper, Wyo. He has resided in Haywood County for 11 years and attended Cove Creek Baptist Church. His family expressed his love for art, fishing and hunting. He worked at Milkco, Inc. for five years before getting sick.
He is survived by his wife Dianna Dunn of 12 years; two sons, Bobby and his wife Carla Dunn of Casper, Wyo. and Tim Dunn of Phoenix, Ariz.; one step-son John (Chris) Shikany of Phoeniz, Ariz.; one daughter Kathy Dunn of Casper, Wyo.; two step-daughters, Shelly Shikany and Barbara Shikany both of Phoenix, Ariz.; one brother Lyle Geist of Casper, Wyo., two sisters Muggs Reich of Casper, Wyo., and Renee Brinster of Rapid City, S.D.; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A gathering of remembrance will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Cove Creek Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until service time at the church and at other times at the familyÕs home. The Rev. Gene King and Billy Ferguson will officiate the service. To honor his request of cremation, he will be buried in the Davis cemetery at Cove Creek.

CANTON - James Roy 'Pete' Clontz, 72, of 12 Skyline Drive, died Sunday, April 22, 2007, at the John F. Keever Jr. Solace Center.

Claude Mauldin

SENECA, S.C. - Claude Mauldin, 87, formerly of Waynesville passed away Saturday April 21, 2007.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Oconee Memorial Park in Seneca, S.C. The family will be present after the service for condolences. For those who desire may sign the guest book at www.garrettfuneralsandcremations.com.

William C. Metcalf

CANDLER — Candler - William Carroll “Bill” Metcalf, 75, of 23 Holbrook Road, Candler, died Sunday, Feb. 13, 2005, at St. Joseph Campus of Mission Hospitals.

He was born in Haywood County and was the son of the late Nora Metcalf Shuler and stepson of the late Harley Shuler. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War and was retired from American Enka Corp. More recently he worked with Sayles Biltmore Bleacheries. He was a member of Oak Hill United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Rebecca Mehaffey.

Surviving are his wife, Ellene Chambers Metcalf; two daughters, Debbie Miller and her husband, Dennis, and Carolyn Jaynes and her husband, Joe, all of Candler; two sons, Randy Metcalf of Burlington and Dr. Ronnie Metcalf of Asheville; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren, all of whom he passionately loved.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home. The Revs. Wes Austin and Charlie Sams officiated. military honors were conducted by the Buncombe County Veterans Council at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The family received friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.

Memorials be made to the Memory Assessment Clinic and Elder Care Resource Program, 2360 Sweeten Creek Road, Asheville, NC 28803.

James M. Wood

James Milas Wood, 67, of 20 Victory St., Waynesville, died Sunday, Feb. 13, 2005, at Haywood Regional Medical Center.

A native of Haywood County, he was the son of Joseph Thomas Wood and Nellie Frady Wood. He was a 1960 graduate of Waynesville Township High School and drove a school bus for the Haywood County School System for 35 years with a perfect driving record. He was employed for 23 years at Dayco and worked in the curved hose department. He was a member of Balsam Baptist Church and loved gospel and bluegrass music.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Oscar Wood; a sister, Irene Wood; and one grandson, Andrew Wood.

Surviving are his wife of 44 years, Lorene Shelton Wood; a daughter, Reneé Wood Sherrill and her friend, Hugh Mashburn, of Waynesville; three sons, Mike Wood of Waynesville, Kim “Kimbo” Wood and his friend, Georgia Gunter, of Waynesville, and Stephen Wood of Bryson City; a sister, Barbara Hill and her husband Bill of Gastonia; four brothers, Carl Wood and his wife Vestia of Candler, Thomas Wood and his wife Peggy of Blackburg, S.C., Wesley Wood and his wife Faye of Mount Holly, and Hershel J. Wood and his wife Jo Ann of Lincolnton, Ga.; seven grandchildren, Trey Sherrill, Taylor Ledford, Jacob and Whittney Edwards, Brittney Wood, and Stephanie and Stacy Wood; and one great-granddaughter, Deslyn Tay Sherrill.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Homes and Cremation Services. The Revs. Mike Leslie and Lee Brooks officiated. Burial was in Balsam Baptist Church cemetery. Pallbearers were Trey and Dan Sherrill, Rick and Taylor Ledford, Jacob Edwards, Ronnie Surrett, Dewayne Sharp and Kelly Rogers. Honorary pallbearers were Carroll and Bill Hyatt, Ed and Earl Shelton, Jimmy Sharp, David Rogers, Hugh Mashburn, Roger Cogdill, Gerald Kilpatrick, Steve Davis, Shane Sharp, and Keith Rogers.

The family received friends Tuesday evening at the funeral home. At other times, the family was at the home or at his daughter’s home, 1514 Crymes Cove Road, Waynesville.

Ralph Zimmerman

Ralph H. Zimmerman, 75, of Waynesville, died Sunday, Feb. 13, 2005, at the Canton Christian Convalescent Center in Canton.

He was born Nov. 26, 1929, to the late John Golden and Debrada Shepard. He was a member of the Beth Eden Baptist Church. He enjoyed helping elderly people in time of need and was a foster grandparent for Mountain Project. Most people would remember him by his generous donation of two or three pieces of hard candy to everyone he met.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Glenda Rathbone; one brother, Robert Zimmerman; one sister, Dena McDowell; and one grandchild, Jordan Caldwell.

Surviving are his wife, Mildred Rathbone Zimmerman; three daughters Barbara Hannah and her husband, David, of Waynesville, Linda Wall and her husband, Robbie, of Woodberry, N.J., and Betty Cooke of Brevard; one stepson, Charles Rathbone and his wife, Nancy, of Canton and Linda Fish and her husband, Lloyd, of Franklin; one brother, John Zimmerman Jr. of Hampton, Va.; three sisters, Ruby Williams of Waynesville, Ona McIntire of Canton and Hilda Fleming of Ukiah, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Beth Eden Baptist Church of Waynesville. The Revs. Carl Chastain and Lloyd Fish officiated. Burial was in the Greenhill cemetery. Pallbearers were his sons-in-law. The family received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Garrett Funeral Home.

Margaret M. Coward

Margaret Jane McGinnis Coward, 80, of 125 Rainbow Road, Waynesville, died Monday, Feb. 14, 2005, at St. Joseph campus of Mission Hospitals.

A native of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late Lloyd and Annie McGinnis Grasty.

She also was preceded in death by a brother, Medford Grasty; three sisters, Helen Leatherwood, Eula Teague and Myrtle Finney.

She enjoyed sewing, quilting and being with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a member of North Hazelwood Baptist Church.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Robert R. Coward Sr.; a daughter, Geana Birchfield and her husband Frank of Waynesville; five sons, Fred Carver and his wife Ruby of Asheville, Tommy Carver of Waynesville, Bobby Coward and his wife Pat of Waynesville; two sisters, Lizzie Huffman and Mildred Mull, both of Waynesville; 17 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Homes and Cremation Services, with the Rev. James Hensley and the Rev. Kenneth Rhinehart officiating.

Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be grandsons, Kevin, Chad, Todd and Christopher Coward, Charlie and Brandson Carver and Steve Birchfield. Honorary pallbearers will be Stuart Matney, Mark Burris, Mark Tice, Danny Moody and John Jordan.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 5216, Glen Allen, Va. 23058-5216.

Jack Somberg

CLYDE — Jack Somberg, 85, died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2005.

He was a World War II veteran. He retired as vice president of East Coast Drygoods Co. of Miami. He lived in Clyde for the past 20 years. He was past president of Clyde Lions Club. He received the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award, was chairman of the Mint Collection that worked with the blind, and received several awards from the North Carolina Lions Foundation Inc. for his work with White Cane. He served on the board of directors and other committees in the club.

He and his wife, Miriam, set up the Somberg Children Fund, which is used to clothe needy children at Christmas.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Miriam; a daughter, Lori; and brother, Edward.

Surviving are his brother, Eugene and his wife, Lois Somberg, of Coral Gables, Fla., and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held on Tuesday in Miami. Memorials may be made to the Clyde Lions Club Children’s Fund, c/o William Osborne, 22 Royal Ridge, Clyde, NC 28721.

Paula S. Bell

Paula Sharon Bell, 61, of Waynesville died Monday, Feb. 14, 2005, at Haywood Regional Medical Center.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Wells Funeral Homes and Cremation Services of Canton is in charge of arrangements.

Kenneth A. Webb

CANDLER — Kenneth “Ken Rock” Alan Webb, 50, of 23 Del Rose Lane, Candler, died Sunday, Feb. 13, 2005.

He was born April 10, 1954, in Haywood County.

Surviving are his mother, Jo Ann Kelley of Asheville; his wife and soul mate, Carrie Brigmon Webb; son, Jeremy Webb of Asheville; brother, Tom Kelley of Asheville; stepdaughters, Lisa Opdyke of Virginia Beach, Va., and Kelly Pegg of Asheville; stepson, Bill Pegg of Asheville; grandchildren, Little Bill, Alex, Heather, Marissa, Katie, Kristen and Keri; and his dog, Jingles.

A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.

West Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 17 Merrimon Ave., Weaverville, is in charge of arrangements.
