Ruby J. West

MILLVILLE, N.J. — Ruby Jane West, 81, of Millville, N.J., formerly of Spring Creek, died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2005.

A native of Madison County, she was the daughter of the late Jessie and Minnie Flemming.

She was preceded in death by her sisters, Cumil, Georgie, Tennie, Lucille, Frances, Nettie and Annie; and brothers, Steve and Robert Fleming Jr.

Surviving are her daughters, Mary E. Sams and her husband, Charles, of Spring Creek, and Barbara Schwegel and her husband, Lou, of Millville; grandchildren, Myron Sams of Marshall and Pam Randazzo, Louis and Ed Schwegel of Millville; great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn Sams of Marshall and Stephanie Spigelmoyer, Christina Randazzo and Laura and Nick Schwegel of Millville; and sister, Marzella Holt and her husband, Henry, of Clyde.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Madison Funeral Home. The Rev. Greg Warren officiated. Burial was in Gap of the Mountain cemetery.

Charles W. Huffman

CANDLER — Charles Wilson Huffman, 90, of 36 Bradshaw Circle, Candler, died Monday, Feb. 14, 2005 at Mountain Area Hospice Solace.

He was a native of Haywood County and was preceded in death by his first wife, Eva Marie Holland Huffman. He retired from Champion International with 30 years of service. He was a member of Liberty Baptist Church and was a former member of West Canton Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Elouise Cole Huffman of Candler, two sons, Charles Steven Huffman of Joanna, S.C. and his fiancee Mitzi Webster, and Gerald Randall Huffman of Carolina Beach, a twin brother Howard Huffman of Clyde; one sister, Betty Moore of Texas; two grandchildren, Charles Alan Huffman and his wife Dana of Mebane, and Kristina Marie Lorenz and her husband Jason of Arden; and one great-grandson, Thomas Wilson Huffman.

He is also survived by two step-daughters and their husbands, Jane and David Pruden of Asheville and Joanne and Fred Ivey of Candler; one stepson and his wife, Bruce and Paula Cole of Cuhutta, GA. There are eight step-grandchildren and a step great-granddaughter.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services. The Rev. Gene King will officiate. Burial will follow at Crawford/Ray Memorial Gardens in Clyde. The family will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Nellie K. Wishard

Nellie K. Wishard, 74, of 370 Acres View Drive, died Tuesday, Feb. 15 at Autumn Care.

Glen Waters

HENDERSONVILLE — Glen Roland Waters, 67, died July 30, 2005, at Pardee Hospital. He was a native of Polk County and was a son of the late Vedas Glenn and Louise Pace Waters.

Waters was a tree trimmer and was retired from Asplundh Tree Co.

He is survived by a daughter, Jane W. Greene of Maggie Valley; two sons, Roland L. and Dean J, Waters of Canton; four sisters, Shirley W. Hipps of Saluda, Patsy W. Bradley of Forest City, Adeline W. Pearson of Hendersonville and Beatrice W. Raven of Tryon; three brothers, Jack, Ralph and Archie Waters, all of Hendersonville; and four grandchildren, Rachel, Kayla, Arron and Danielle Waters. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Shepherd Memorial Park, with the Rev. Kirk Pace officiating.

The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Wednesday at Wells Funeral Home & Cremation Services of Canton.

Hobert Henry

CLYDE — Hobert George Henry, 82, of Thompson Cove Road, died Monday, August 11, 2005, at his residence. He was a native of Jackson County and resided in Haywood County for the last 18 years, after coming here from Michigan. He was the son of the late M. J. and Addie Cogdill Henry. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Carrie Beek and Girlie Jones. He retired from Marathon Oil Company as a pipe fitter with 39 years of service. He was United States Navy veteran of World War II serving in the Pacific Theater. In addition to his wife of 60 years, Vickie Davis Henry, he is survived by two sons, Gary M. Henry and his wife, Beverly of Fairview, and Steven M. Henry and his fiancé, Theresa of Woodhaven, Mich.; a sister, Dixie Dehart of Bryson City; two brothers, Bill Henry of Sylva and Lewis Henry of York, S.C.; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Canton chapel of Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services, with the Rev. Alan Davis officiating. Burial will follow at Crawford/Ray Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 12:45 to 1:45 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the home. Peggy Brannon West

HIGH POINT — Peggy Brannon West, formerly of Asheville, died Friday, July 29, 2005. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, at Morris Funeral Home in Asheville. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. West was born January 29, 1927, to the late Charles S. Brannon and Josephine Abel Brannon. She was preceded in death by her brother, Charles and sister, Betty Jo Shepard. Survivors include her sister, Jean B. Stamey and three children of Lake Junaluska; son, James H. West Jr. and wife Pat of Taylors, S.C.; daughter, Jan Davis and husband Don of Greensboro, and daughter, Pat Carmack and husband Wayne of Whitsett; three grandchildren, Matthew Roberson and fiancé Adrienne of Asheville, Jay West and Page West of Greenville and Shannon Christy and husband Bob of Fairview; and one great-grandchild. Peggy was retired from Buncombe County and the N.C. Agricultural Extension Service. She was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church. She enjoyed her retirement years with her long-time companion, Bob Smith, who preceded her in death in July, 2004. Together, they enjoyed concerts, cooking, furniture refinishing and spending time with each other. Peggy was a loving mother and grandmother who delighted in following the milestones and lives of her children and grandchildren. She will be greatly missed.

Keith ‘Cooter’ Fisher

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Robert Keith Fisher, 37, of Spartanburg, S.C., died Tuesday at the Greenville Memorial Hospital. He was of the Baptist faith and was a 1986 graduate of Dorman High School. He was a construction worker. Survivors include his father and stepmother, George C. and Mary Fisher of Waynesville; and his mother, Dawn Pruitt Sanford of Roebuck; three sons, Joshua K. Fisher and Jordy Hipps, both of Pacolet, and Zachary C. Fisher of the home; one brother, Scott and his wife Ginger Fisher of Marion; one sister, Kim and her husband Scott Garland of Jackson, Tenn.; two step-brothers, Greg and Keith Smith of Waynesville; two halfbrothers, Chris and Matthew Fisher; one half sister, Tammy Fisher, all of Marion. Visitation will be 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Stribling Funeral Horne in Duncan. Graveside services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Heritage Memorial Gardens in Roebuck, conducted by the Rev. Ray Stockton. The family is at his mother’s residence, Dawn Sanford, 140 Oak Ave., Roebuck. In lieu of flowers, memorials maybe made to a trust fund for Joshua and Zachary Fisher, P.O. Box 1044, Roebuck, SC. 29376 Stribling Funeral Home of Duncan, S.C. is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Ellen C. Kaufman

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Ellen C. Kaufman, 100, of St. Petersburg, Fla., died Saturday, July 30, 2005. She was born on July 26, 1905, in Cologne, Germany to Hugo Herz and Clara Rollman-Herz. On April 21, 1928, Ellen married Walter S. Kaufman. Walter, the son of a Cologne shoe retailer, worked for a shoe manufacturer in Germany until 1935, when, dispossessed by the Nazi regime of all their property, the family fled to Holland and then to Belgium. Still in Europe when Hitler occupied western Europe, friends in France helped the Kaufmans hide in the French Alps. At the end of World War II, both Ellen and Walter were hired by the U.S. forces as translators. In 1946, Walter and Ellen and their family joined Walter’s cousin, Heinz Rollman and other business partners who had preceded them to the United States. In Waynesville, they established a new business, Wellco Enterprises, where Ellen worked part time. She resided in Waynesville until moving to Florida in 1969 and to the St. Petersburg area in 1976. Survivors include her son, Rolf Kaufman, her grandson, Stephen Kaufman and wife Karen, and a great-grandson, Sam Kaufman, all of Waynesville. Ellen also leaves behind several nieces and nephew, as well as an extended family in St. Petersburg. Her husband Walter S. Kaufman preceded her in death in 1973. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, at Royal Palm Memorial Garden in Punta Gorda, Fla. Kays-Ponger Funeral Home of Punta Gorda is in charge of arrangements. Contributions in memory of Ellen Kaufman may be made to the donor’s chosen charity.

Edith Lowe Beasley

CLYDE — Edith Lowe Beasley, 84, went to be with the Lord on Monday, Aug. 1, 2005, at Haywood Regional Medical Center with her family by her side. A native of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late Jesse and Flora Arrington Lowe. She retired from C. J. Harris Hospital in Sylva where she worked as a nurse. She was a member of Panther Creek Baptist Church. She loved spending time with her family, reading her bible, and tending to her flowers. She is survived by her husband, Coman Beasley of Clyde; one daughter, Sandy Horton and her husband Carl of Clyde; three sons, Steve Beasley and his wife Charlene of Sylva; Johnny Beasley of Clyde; Roger Beasley and his wife Joann of Whittier; one sister, Mildred Toy of Waynesville; four brothers Clarence “Bud” Lowe and his wife Merry Jo of Waynesville, Robert D. Lowe and his wife Jean of Clyde, Frank Lowe and his wife Thelma of Waynesville, and Earl Lowe and wife Catherine of Clyde; six grandchildren, Carla Horton of Candler, Chad Horton of Fletcher, Shelly Beasley Dul and her husband Jason of Charlotte; Jessica Beasley of Sylva, Brian Beasley and his wife Brooke of Bethel, and Alan Beasley of Asheville; two great grandchildren, Daniella Dul of Charlotte and Walker Beasley of Bethel. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Jack Lowe, Billy Joe Lowe; and infant sister, Polly Anna Lowe. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Panther Creek Baptist Church where the body will lie in state for 30 minutes prior to the service. The Rev. Ronald Greene and Rev. Billy Ferguson will officiate. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Garrett Funerals and Cremations. Burial will be in Panther Creek Baptist Church cemetery with Brian Beasley, Chad Horton, Bryan Hartline, Ralph Lowe, Mike Lowe and Paul Gray serving as pallbearers. Memorials may be made to the Panther Creek Baptist Church cemetery Fund.

Annette B. Caldwell

Annette B. Caldwell, 74, of Waynesville, passed away Sunday, July 31, 2005, at the Haywood Regional Medical Center. She was born on April 7, 1931, in Jackson County to the late S. Cole and Ida Rabb Burch. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother and she was a dedicated beautician for nearly 40 years. She was also a member of Barberville Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceeded in death by her beloved daughter, Teresa Ann Green, three brothers and one sister. She is survived by her husband of 46 years, William “Bill” Caldwell; a daughter Lynda Gayle Caldwell of Columbia, S.C.; one sister, Brownie Shuler of Dillsboro; two grandchildren, William Brian Green and his wife Holly, and Matthew Charles Green; and two nieces, Glenda Shuler Sharp and Brenda Shuler Crawford. Services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Barberville Baptist Church with the Rev. G. W. Jameson and the Rev. Johnny Foster officiating. The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park, with David Burch, David Burch Jr., Jahn Barrett, Jim Gaddis, Doug Mitchell, and Chris Shuler serving as pallbearers. Taylor L. Rankins

Taylor Leann Rankins, infant daughter of David and Cynthia Gregory Rankins, of the Fines Creek Community, died Monday, Aug. 1, 2005, at Memorial Mission Hospital. Surviving in addition to her parents is a sister, Haley Rankins of the home; maternal grandparents, Tammy Smathers of Whittier and Carroll Gregory of Tuckasegee; paternal grandmother, Phyllis Falk of Clyde; maternal great-grandmother, Waynefica Mathis of Cullowhee. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, at Fines Creek Memorial Baptist Church cemetery, with the Rev. Ricky Connor officiating. Melton-Riddle Funeral Home, Sylva, is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Vaughn Bramlett

CLYDE - Martin Vaughn Bramlett, 82, of 868 Mulberry St., died Thursday, July 26, 2007, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston Salem.
He was a native of Haywood County and the son of the late Vaughn and Annie Best Bramlett. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Julia Carol Bramlett Jones, who died in 2005; and two sisters, Bobbie Louise Bramlett Fulbright and Billie Faye Bramlett Medford.
He retired from Champion International as district sales manager of the Kansas City, Mo. office after 39 years of service with the company. He was a member of Darrtown United Methodist Church in Darrtown, Ohio, a member of V.F.W. Post #5198, and a member of the Champion Old Timers. He was an Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America. Mr. Bramlett was a World War II veteran serving in the U.S.M.C., the U.S. Navy as a naval aviator and the U. S. Army National Guard. His service included participating in 'Operation Crossroads' in the South Pacific. 'Operation Crossroads' was the first of the atomic bomb testing in the Pacific by the United States.Ę
In addition to his wife of 61 years, Violet Owen Bramlett of Clyde, he is survived by a daughter, Melinda Bramlett Joyner and her husband Kenneth M. of Hiawassee, Ga. and St. Petersburg, Fla.; a son, Martin Owen Bramlett and his wife, Betty Jo Gibbons Bramlett of Foster City, Calif.; a son-in-law, Richard Preston Jones of Tacoma, Wash.; three sisters, Susie Bramlett Crisp, Norma Bramlett Tyson and Anne Bramlett Mathews, all of Canton; a brother, Christopher Lewis Bramlett of Albemarle; four grandchildren, Monica Miller/Ensley, Michael Bramlett Miller, Sara Augusta Bramlett and Margaret Gibbons Bramlett; and a great-granddaughter, Katherine Marie Redemer.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. today at West Canton Baptist Church with the Revs. Joseph Steadman and Wallace Britt officiating. The family received friends Sunday at Wells Funeral Homes and Cremation Services of Canton. Burial will follow at Bon-A-Venture cemetery, Newfound Road with military honors conducted by the U.S. Navy. His grandson, Michael Bramlett Miller will serve as pallbearer.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 90 Stiles Road, Canton, NC 28716.

Ben H. Hannah

CANTON - Ben Henry Hannah, 87, of Newfound Road, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 25, 2007.
He was a native of Haywood County and the son of the late Henry and Willie Hannah. Ben retired from Champion International after 39 years of service where he was a forklift operator. Ben was a member of Mountain View Church of God. Ben had a special love for family and automobile racing.
In addition to his wife of 71 years, Ruth Smith Hannah, he is survived by one son, Harold Hannah; one daughter, Benalee Stuart of Lavonia, Ga.; two sisters, Martha Devore of Candler and Evelyn Smith of Clyde; two brothers, Charlie Hannah of Clyde and Joe Hannah of Candler; three grandchildren, Mike Pitts, Terry Hannah, and Randy Hannah; three great-grandchildren, Macey Hannah, Connor Hannah, and Garrett Hannah.
A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Mountain View Church of God with the Revs. Herman Toney and Thad Dowdle officiating. Burial followed at Crawford/Ray Memorial Gardens in Clyde. The family received friends Saturday at Wells Funeral Home in Canton. Pallbearers were Mike Pitts, Terry Hannah, Randy Hannah, Willie Devore, Earl Hannah, Richard Hannah, Jimmy Smith, and Zeek Hannah. At other times, the family will be at the residence of Ruth Hannah, 2592 Newfound Road, Canton.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Mountain View Church of God Building Fund, P. O. Box 553, Canton, NC 28716.

Evelyn Caldwell Parham

Evelyn Caldwell Parham, 94, of Waynesville passed away Wedensday, July 25, 2007, in Fort Myers, Fla.
A service of remembrance will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 4, in the chapel of Garrett Funerals and Cremations. The family will be present to greet friends from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. that morning. Burial will be private at Garrett Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Jacqueline Clark Robinson

CANTON - 'Jackie' Robinson, 85, of 28 Garrett Dr., died Thursday, July 26, 2007, at Memorial Mission Hospital.
She was a native and lifelong resident of Haywood County and the daughter of the late W. T. and Maude Clark. She was preceded in death by her husband, McKinley Robinson who died in 1996 and a sister, Thomasine Scarboro, who died in May. She retired from Square D with 17 years of service and was a member of Welcome Hill Baptist Church. Her life was filled with the love of being a mother and grandmother.
She is survived by a daughter, Sarah Frizzell of Canton; two sons, Bill Robinson and his wife, Brenda, and Doug Robinson and his wife Patricia, with whom she made her home, all of Canton; two sisters, Charlotte Boone and her husband Bill of Canton, and Barbara Jean Leary and her husband Russell of Ocala, Fla.; a brother, Buddy Clark and his wife, Gail, of Sulphur Springs, Fla.; seven grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
A funeral service was held Sunday, July 29, at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Bon-A-Venture cemetery, Old Clyde Road. The family will be at the home of her son, Doug Robinson, 28 Garrett Dr., in the Beaverdam community.

Suzette Hall

Suzette Patricia Crisp Hall, 58, of Waynesville passed away Friday, July 27, 2007, at Mission Hospitals Memorial Campus. She was born in Swain County on March 3, 1949, to Hazel Estes Crisp and the late Vincent Crisp.
She loved her family, especially her granddaughter, Sabrea. She enjoyed crafts, painting, scrapbooking, and crocheting. She also enjoyed her job working with the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indians as the fiscal coordinator. She was a member of Grandview Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her father and a baby daughter, Crystal Hope Hall.
She is survived by her mother, Hazel Estes Crisp of Waynesville, her husband of 37 years, Harold Hall; two daughters, Kimberly and her husband, Tom Pinkerton of Waynesville and Hollie and her husband, Travis Johnson of Sylva and two grandchildren, Sabrea and Lennox Pinkerton.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Garrett Hillcrest Memorial Park. The family will receive friends following the service.
Entombment will be in the Garrett Hillcrest Memorial Park Mausoleum.

Patricia Kochakian

CANDLER - Patricia Sims Kochakian, 65, died Saturday, July 28, 2007.
She was a native of Haywood County and the daughter of the late L. E. and Virginia Nelson Sims.
She is survived by two daughters, Carolyn K. Neal and Teresa K. Vordemier; two sisters, Maxine Sims Reese and Frances Sims Sherlin both of Candler and four grandchildren.
A graveside service for friends and family will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, July 30, at Dawn Memory Gardens.
Memorials may be made to oneŐs favorite charity.

Gladys Hipps

CANTON - Gladys Hipps, 77, of the Beaverdam Community, died unexpectedly Friday, July 27, 2007, at her residence.
She was a native and lifelong resident of Haywood County and the daughter late Willie Z. and Inis Worley Mann. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Neal Bennett Hipps, who died in 1979, and three sons, David Neal, Eric Lynn and Marvin Lane Hipps. She was a member of Beaverdam United Methodist Church.
She was a manager in food service for many years and an associate at Wal-Mart for the last year. Gladys loved her family dearly.
She is survived by a daughter, Kathy Stockton of Candler; a son, Bennett Hipps of Canton; two sisters, Wanda Parham and Grace Carines both of Canton; two brothers, Marvin Mann of Tenn., and Tom Mann of Canton; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 30, at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Beaverdam Community cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Jason, Nathan, Joey, and Casey Lee Hipps, Chris and Chad Stockton, Jay Bailey and Mitch Nelson.

Woodson Adams Birthright

CLYDE - Woodson Adams Birthright, infant son of Dr. Brian H. and Kate Graves Birthright, went to be with Jesus on Friday, July 27, 2007.
Woodson is survived, in addition to his parents, by a brother, Whitford Randall Birthright; maternal grandmother, Ann Mazenko and her husband, Michael, of Gulf Breeze, Fla.; maternal grandfather, Bill Graves and his wife, ĘLynette, of Gulf Breeze, Fla.; paternal grandmother, Bootsey Birthright of Tuscaloosa, Ala., and paternal grandfather, Brian H. Birthright Sr. and his wife, Helen, of Phoenix, Ariz., and an uncle, Jase Graves and his wife, Allison, of Gulf Breeze, Fla.
Private services were held on Sunday July 29, 2007, at LongŐs Chapel United Methodist Church at Lake Junaluska.

Nevaeh Joyce and Natalie Gail Conard

Nevaeh Joyce and Natalie Gail Conard, infant daughters of Heidi Christine Constante and Robert Lee Conard went to be with the angels Friday, July 27, 2007.
In addition to their parents, they are survived by two brothers, Zachary Ryan Davis and Xavier Evan Conard; a sister, Margie Faith Crowe; maternal grandparents, John and Wanda Constante; maternal great-grandmother, Joyce Silvers; maternal great-grandparents, Bob and Joyce Constante; paternal grandmother, Dora Mae Conard; paternal grandfather, John Barrett; paternal great-grandmother, Loula Mae Rhodarmer, all of Waynesville. The twins were preceded in death by the maternal great-grandfather, Joseph Silvers.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 30, at Maple Grove cemetery with Rev. Jeff Gibson officiating. The family will receive friends from 10 until 10:45 a.m. at Wells Funeral Home in Waynesville prior to the graveside service.
John Constante, Jr. will serve as pallbearer.
