Mr. Armond Darrell Young, age 84, of Grassy Creek died Tuesday, Feb. 27, at his residence.

Funeral services were held Friday, March 2, at 2 p.m. at the Pleasant Home Baptist Church with Rev. Julian Owen, Rev. David Testerman and Rev. Rick Cornejo officiating. Burial followed in the Waddell cemetery in Grassy Creek with masonic rites. The family received friends from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 29 at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel in Jefferson.

Mr. Young was born in Ashe County on Jan. 24, 1917 to the late Irvin Ruben and Mary Alice Waddell Young. He was a veteran of the US Army during World War II, past master of Mouth of Wilson Masonic Lodge number 223, and a member for 47 years. Since 1940, he was a member of Pleasant Home Baptist Church in Grassy Creek.

He is survived by his wife, Beatrice Decker Young; two sons, Jerry Young of Crumpler and Kenneth Young of Grassy Creek; three daughters, Freda Porter of West Jefferson, Sandra Young and Debra Roten, both of Crumpler; one brother, Stanley Young of Grassy Creek; one sister, Pauline Walters of Grassy Creek; 12 grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, six step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Bernard “Bud” Roten, age 63, of Millers Creek died Wednesday, Feb. 28 at Britthaven Nursing Home.

Mr. Roten was remembered at funeral services held Friday, March 2 at 11 a.m. at Reins-Sturdivant Chapel. Rev. Clayburn Roten and Rev. Benny Roten officiated. Burial followed in the Roten Family cemetery.

Mr. Roten was born in Wilkes County, Feb. 27, 1938, to Alona and Ola R. Roten. He was a member of Glendale Springs Baptist Church

He is survived by two daughters, Pamela Johnson and Melissa Harris, both of Millers Creek; three sons, Eric Roten and Jeff Roten, both of Millers Creek, and Eddie Roten of Wilkesboro; three sisters, Freda Perry, of Millers Creek, Nellie Knepper of Palm Harbor, Fla., and Eula Mae Sheets of West Jefferson; two brothers, Clint Roten of West Jefferson and Cliff Roten of Low Gap; and six grandchildren.

Robert Gordon Weaver

Robert Gordon Weaver, age 63, of West Jefferson died Tuesday, Feb. 27 at his home.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Feb. 28 at 2 p.m. at the Badger Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Johnny Goodman officiated. Burial followed in the Smethport cemetery.

Mr. Weaver was born on April 29, 1937 in Ashe County to Hiram and Virginia Lewis Weaver.

Mr. Weaver is survived by his wife, Jewel Holman Weaver; one son, Samuel Weaver; his mother, Virginia Weaver; one sister, Rosa Lee Ashley and one grandchild, all of West Jefferson.

Violet Weaver
Lebanon, Va.
Died: March 2, 2001

Mrs. Violet Baldwin Weaver, age 95, of Lebanon, Va., formerly of Ashe County died Friday, March 2, in the Maple Grove Health Care Center in Lebanon.

Funeral services were held Monday, March 5 at 11 a.m. at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel. Elder Eddie Lyle officiated. Burial followed in the Baldwin Family cemetery in Whitetop, Va. The family received friends Sunday, March 4 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mrs. Miller was born in Grayson County, Va. to the late Cicero Madison and Mattie Garris Baldwin. She lived in Ashe County before moving to Wilmington, Del. in 1951. She had lived in Lebanon, Va. with her daughter since 1997. She was the last surviving member of her family. She was a longtime member of Apple Grove Baptist Church in Ashe County. She was preceded in death by her husband, Grover C. Weaver, an infant son, Richard Weaver, a grandson, Richard William Roberts, five brothers and three sisters.

She is survived by: two daughters, Pauline (Polly) Roberts, of Wilmington, Del. and Wanda and her husband, Nathan Castle, Jr., of Lebanon, Va; one son, Dr. Kenneth Weaver and his wife Jean, Jonesborough, Tenn; two grandsons, James Roberts, Jr., of Wilmington, De and David N. Castle of Lebanon, Va; nine granddaughters, Mrs. Richard (Carol) Morris, of Middletown, De., Jane Castle of Jonesborough, Tn., Mrs. Rick (Teresa) Meyer, of Mandeville, La., Janice Weaver, of Chapel Hill, Mrs. Peter (Beverely) Brown, of Sedalia, Colo., Mrs. Edward (Pamela) Foster, of Jamestown, and Mrs. Michael (Cynthia) Sneed, of Chapel Hill; three great-granddaughters; twelve great-grandsons and one great-great-grandson.

Mr. Robert Lawrence Hamm Jr., age 18 of Creston died Monday morning, Dec. 3 in Creston.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Dec. 6 at 2 p.m. at Rock Creek Baptist Church by Rev. Glenn Woodie, Rev. Junior Seatz and Rev. Darrell Graybeal. Burial followed in the Mahala Family cemetery. The family received friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5 at Boone Family Funeral Home.
Mr. Hamm was born in Watauga County on April 6, 1983 to Robert Lawrence Hamm Sr. and Wanda Sue Mahala Hamm. He was a student at Ashe County High School, where he was involved in the Automotive Club 2000-2001 and the Masonry Club 2001-2002.
He is survived by his parents, Robert and Sue Hamm of Creston; a brother, Charlie Hamm of the home; a sister and brother-in-law, Linda and Michael Groves of Creston; paternal grandparents, Lawrence and Shirley Blackburn Hamm, of Crumpler; maternal grandmother, Marie Pope Mahala of Creston; and paternal great- grandparents, Carl and Zella Taylor Blackburn of Crumpler.
Pallbearers for the service were Michael Hamm, Michael Groves, David Mahala, Shirlie Mahala, Dale Hamm and Kermit Hamm.

Lori Lee Blevins Love, age 35 of Thomasville, died Saturday, December 1, at High Point Regional Hospital.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 5 at the Badger Funeral Home Chapel. Elder David Lyalls officiated. Burial followed in the Perry cemetery. The family received friends from 10 until 11 a.m. prior to the service.
Mrs. Love was born Nov. 22, 1966 in Ashe County to Ernest and Patsy Perry Blevins. She was preceded in death by her mother.
She is survived by her husband: Sellers Love; her father, Ernest Blevins of Thomasville; one son, Douglas Trotter of Lexington; one sister, Lisa Lewallen of Thomasville; and one brother, Eric Blevins of Thomasville.

Edward Testerman Sr.

Edward Van Testerman Sr., better known as "Pete", age 68 of Lansing, died Monday afternoon, December 3, in West Jefferson.
Funeral services were held Thursday, December 6, 2001 at 11 a.m., at Scottsville Baptist Church by Rev. Reeves Jones and Rev. Jerry Harris. Burial followed in the Howell Hill cemetery. The family received friends from 7-9 p.m.,, Wednesday, December 5 at Boone Family Funeral Home.
Mr. Testerman was born in Ashe County on March 31, 1933 to Omer F. Testerman and Bessie Hoosier Testerman. He was a Sander in the Furniture Mfg.
He is survived by his wife, Elinor Barker Testerman, of the home; four sons, Van Testerman, of Lansing, Dale Testerman, of Warrensville, Tyler Testerman, of Wilkesboro and Mark Testerman, of the home; a brother, Walt Testerman, of Crumpler; two sisters, Ruth Blackburn, of Jefferson and Lorene Myers, of Deep Gap; a half-sister, Nona Hart, of West Jefferson; three grandchildren; two step grandchildren; a step great grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Byron Elcine Sexton, age 91, of West Jefferson, died Monday morning, December 3, at Ashe Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services were held Thursday, December 6 at 2 p.m., at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Ken Morris. Burial followed in the Ashelawn Memorial Gardens cemetery. The family received friends one hour prior to the funeral service. The family also received friends on Wednesday from 7-9 p.m., at the home of Tim & Penny Sexton at 891 Olde Charter Circle of Jefferson Landing.
Mr. Sexton was born in Ashe County on August 15, 1910 to Elcine Sexton and Myrtle Brown Sexton. He was an agricultural farmer. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Thelma Louise Sturgill Sexton; and a son, Kenneth Sexton.
He is survived by two sons, Tim Sexton and wife, Penny, of Jefferson and Jimmy Sexton and wife, Iris, of Clifton, Va.; a daughter-in-law, Joann Sexton, of West Jefferson; a sister, Coleen Adams, of Lansing; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Nadine Clara Davis Sheets, age 66 of Jefferson, died Wednesday, December 4, at her home.
A memorial service was held Friday, December 7 at 2 p.m. at the West Jefferson First Baptist Church. Rev. Ken Morris officiated. The family received friends Thursday, December 6 from 7 until 9 p.m. at the West Jefferson First Baptist Church.
Mrs. Sheets was born June 26, 1935 in Pond Mountain to Quincy and Ada Greer Davis. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Sheets, and her brother, Gail Davis.
She is survived by three daughters Pamela Houck and husband Rick of Abingdon, Va., Vickie Absher and husband Mark of West Jefferson, and Angela Fink of Warrensville; two sisters, Maxine Laughlin of Atlanta, Ga., and Elizabeth Barker of Lenoir; and four grandchildren, Mandy Houck, Meredith Houck, Steven Absher and Richard Lee Absher.
Memorials may be made to the West Jefferson First Baptist Church Youth Fund, P.O. Box 180, West Jefferson, NC 28694.

Marie Davis Bryan, 91, of Ashe County and Sarasota, Fla. died Friday, Dec. 7 in Matairie, La.
Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 10 at 3 p.m. at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel in Jefferson with Elder Eddie Lyle officiating. Interment followed in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens. The family received friends from 2-3 p.m. Monday prior to services.
Mrs. Bryan was born in Ashe County (Pond Mountain area) on Sept. 30, 1910 to Calvin Newton and Laura Jane Cox Davis. The third of 10 children, she was a homemaker and member of the Pond Mountain Primitive Baptist Church. Mrs. Bryan was preceded in death by her husbands, Leonard Lee Hurley of Ashe County, John Littlewood of Ashe County and M. Vernon Bryan of Sarasota, Fla.
She is survived by one son and daughter in law, Leonard Glenn and wife Mae Black Hurley of Sarasota, Fla.; one daughter and son in law, Laura Marie and Bernard Cleary of Matairie, La.; three sisters, Nora Hurley, Ruth Little and Geneva Absher all of West Jefferson; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Howard “Doug” Hartzog Jr.

Howard Dudley Hartzog Jr., better known as Doug, of Jefferson, formerly of Winston-Salem, died Wednesday, Nov. 28 at his home.
Funeral services were held at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 30 at Badger Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Archie Jones and Rev. Ray Davis officiated. The family received friends from 6-7 p.m. prior to the service. The family also visited with friends following the service.
Mr. Hartzog was born April 12, 1964 in Winston-Salem to Howard Dudley Hartzog Sr. and Peggy Saultz Hartzog.
He is survived by his wife, Martha Church Hartzog; his parents, Dudley and Peggy Hartzog of The Villages, Fla.; one stepdaughter, Jessica Jones; his grandmothers, Jenny Hartzog and Ella Mae Woodie of Jefferson.

Opal Elouise Testerman, age 75 of Melbourne, Fla., formerly of Ashe County, died Monday, May 27 at the Holmes Regional Hospital.
A graveside service was held Friday, May 29 at 6 p.m. at the Baptist Chapel cemetery. Rev. Guy Testerman officiated.
Ms. Testerman was born on June 26, 1926 in Ashe County to Eli and Lesi Blevins Testerman.
She is survived by two sisters, Paula Dorson of Indian Harbor Beach, Fla., and Beatrice McCurdy of West Palm Beach, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Turnmire was born Dec. 2, 1959 in Ashe County to Junior Ray and Viola Johnson Dillard.
She is survived by her husband, Worth Allen Turnmire; two daughters, Angela Dillard of Glendale Springs and Miranda Turnmire of the home; one son, Jared Turnmire of the home; one step-son, Billy Ray Turnmire of the home; parents, Junior Ray and Viola Dillard of Glendale Springs; two sisters, Ruby Pardue and Nancy Dillard of Wilkesboro; three brothers, Gary and Bobby Dillard of Wilkesboro and Kenneth Dillard of Glendale Springs; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
