Miss Lizzie Clyde Dixon, age 89, of Crumpler, died Sunday morning, Sept. 22, at Ashe Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Sept. 24 at 11 a.m., at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel by Elder Bobby Absher and Rev. Worth Sweet. Burial followed in the Senter Primitive Baptist Church cemetery. The family received friends from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 23 at the funeral home.
Miss Dixon was born in Ashe County on Tuesday, Oct. 1, 1912 to the late Preston Dixon and Lola Goodman Dixon. She worked as a cook at several places in the county, such as Greenfield Restaurant and Eldreth’s Restaurant and Ashe Central High School, from where she retired. She was a member of the Senter Primitive Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by five brothers, Arthur Dixon, Frank Dixon, Curren Dixon, Smith Dixon and Marshal Dixon; seven sisters, Sally Sanders, Judy Dixon, Jenny Pennington, Mattie Severt, Myrtle Corrhier, Annie Jones and Nellie Hudler.
Memorials may be made to Senter Primitive Baptist Church, c/o Bobby Absher, 183 Old Ridge Road, Crumpler, NC 28617.

Mrs. Betty Lou Potter Grubb, age 71, of Todd, died Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 24 at Ashe Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services were held on Friday, Sept. 27 at 2 p.m. at Laurel Knob Baptist Church and were conducted by Rev. J. D. Walton and Rev. Jim Rash. Burial follow in the Stephens cemetery. The family received friends one hour prior to the funeral service. Active pall bearers included her son, Jim Grubb, Ronnie Grubb Jr., John Gleeson, James Edwards, Butch Winebarger and Cliff Luster. Honorary pall bearers included Keith Dillard and Arnold Houck.
She was born in Watauga County on Sunday, March 22, 1931, one of five children born to the late Frank and Flossie Potter. She was a homemaker and a member of Laurel Knob Baptist Church. She lived a simple life, but the mention of her cornbread brought a smile to the face of each of her sons. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Roy William Grubb in 1998; one brother, Archie Potter in 1999; and one great-grandson, Joshua Ham.
She is survived by her husband, Ervin W. Grubb; three sons: Ronnie Grubb and wife, Angie, of West Jefferson, Jim Grubb of Todd, and Johnny Grubb and wife, Debra, of Lansing; three sisters: Jo Curtis of Raleigh, Jackie Atkins of Lenoir and her twin, Sue Winebarger of Boone; five grandchildren: Crystal Grubb, Cookie Grubb, Ronnie Grubb, Jr., Roy William Grubb and Daniel Grubb; three great-grandchildren: Victoria Trivette, Benjamin Walters and Jonathan Ham; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be given to Laurel Knob Baptist Church, c/o Joann Goodman, 3288 NC Hwy 194 South, Todd, NC 28684.

Mr. Noah Beauford Johnson, age 62 of Hays, died Sunday, Sept. 22 at his home.
Mr. Johnson was born to Charles Lester and Eulala Mae Church Johnson.
He is survived by his wife, Ola Mae Bowlin Johnson of the home; one daughter, Tina J. Triplett of North Wilkesboro; and one son, Scott Johnson of Hays, formerly of Ashe County.

Dale Welch

Dale Welch, age 75, of Creston, died Sunday, Dec. 1 at his home.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Dec. 4 at 2 p.m. at the Big Springs Baptist Church. Rev. J.B. Ham, Rev. Denton Hart, Rev. Ray Slemp and Rev. Lloyd Day officiated. Burial followed in the Calhoun cemetery. The family received friends on Tuesday, Dec. 3 from 6-8 p.m. at Badger Funeral Home.
Mr. Welch was born in Creston on Oct. 4, 1927 to Oscar and Mattie Eldreth Welch.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley Osborne Welch; one son, Joe Welch of Creston; two daughters, Carol Blevins of Lansing and Deloris Baldwin of Creston; one sister, Mae Arnold of Delaware; one brother, Vaughn Welch of Lansing; two grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and one god-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

William Lee Stidham
West Jefferson

William Lee Stidham, age 85 of West Jefferson died Tuesday, Dec. 3 at the Ashe Living Center in Jefferson.
Funeral services were held at 8 p.m., Friday, Dec. 6 at the Ashelawn Memorial Chapel. Rev. Larry Shepherd and Rev. Tommy Dollar officiated. Burial followed Saturday, Dec. 7 at 11 a.m. in the Taylor cemetery. The family received friends from 6-8 p.m., Friday prior to the service. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Ashe, PO Box 421, Jefferson, NC 28640.
Mr. Stidham was born May 4, 1917 in Ashe County to Arthur and Susie Taylor Stidham. He was united in marriage to Sarah Stidham on April 4, 1936. Their union lasted for 57 years until her death in 1993. He retired from Thomasville Industries in 1979 after 27 years of service.
Mr. Stidham is survived by one daughter, Lorraine Hurley of West Jefferson; grandchildren, Greg and Joseph Hurley and Tommy Stidham; great-grandchildren, Shelia Miller, Brandy, Elizabeth Lee, Jonathan and Linda Catherine Hurley; and great-great grandchild, Blake Hurley.
Ashelawn Memorial Chapel was in charge of the arrangements.

Vernie Green Powers

Vernie Green Powers, age 80, of Warrensville, died Tuesday, Dec. 3 at his home.
Funeral services was held Saturday, Dec. 7 at 2 p.m. at the Oak Grove Baptist Church. Rev. David Lyalls, Rev. Glenn Woodie, Rev. Tommy Dollar and Rev. George Grubb officiated. Burial followed in the Ashelawn Memorial Gardens. The family received friends on Friday, Dec. 6 from 7-9 p.m. at Badger Funeral Home.
Mr. Powers was born on Jan. 5, 1922 in Ashe County to Henry and Mary Collins Powers. He retired from the North Carolina Department of Transportation and was a deacon at Temple Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth Powers; two sisters, Rose Darnell and Georgia Laviner, both of Kannapolis; and several nieces and nephews.

Harry Vollmer
West Jefferson
Died: December 7, 2002
Harry Vollmer, age 94, of West Jefferson, formerly of Memphis, died Dec. 7 at Ashe Living Center in Jefferson.
Funeral services will be held Dec. 10 at 4 p.m. at Memorial Park Funeral Home in Memphis, Tenn. Burial will be in Memorial Park Mausoleum.
Mr. Vollmer was a member of Eudora Baptist Church and served in the U. S. Coast Guard during World War II.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Louise Vollmer of Jefferson; one daughter, Barbara Fox of Jefferson; two sons, David Vollmer and Steven Vollmer, both of Collierville, Tenn.; one brother, Bill Vollmer of Baton Rouge, La.; and five great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Victory Christian Center or Bald Mountain Baptist Church.

Walter Field Eller Sr.

Walter Field Eller Sr., age 87, of Jefferson, died Thursday night, Dec. 6 at Ashe Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services were held Sunday, Dec. 8 at 2 p.m. at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Michael Carter officiated. Burial followed in the Kemp-Lewis cemetery. The family received friends one hour prior to the service.
Mr. Eller was born in Ashe County on Thursday, May 6, 1915 to Robert E. Lee Eller and Mary Ann Hoosier Eller.
Mr. Eller was shared with us for 87 years and seven months before our Lord took him to his heavenly home.
He is survived by his wife, Lucy Sturgill Eller of the home; three sons, Walter Eller Jr. of Fletcher, Doug Eller of West Jefferson and Terry Eller of Mouth of Wilson, Va.; three daughters, Sandra Lambert and Sharon Barker, both of Jefferson and Jorene Pruette of Vale; a sister, Annie Elliott of Segraves Nursing Care Center; 18 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and two step-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Dan Price, age 90, of Whitetop, Va., passed away Tuesday, Dec. 3 at Ashe Memorial Hospital in Jefferson.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Dec. 5 at 2 p.m. in Helton Valley Baptist Church in Whitetop, Va. Burial followed in Cole cemetery. Rev. Reeves Jones and Rev. Rex Hall officiated.
Mr. Price was born Aug. 23, 1912 at Troutdale, Va. to Hugh C. and Emma Spencer Price.
He is survived by his wife, Louise N. Price; one daughter, Evelyn Jones of Jefferson; two sons, Gayle Price of Whitetop, Va. and Paul “Reuben” Price of Lansing; three step-daughters, Gwen Ashley of Jefferson, Virginia Freeman of Greenville, SC, Jo Williams of Durham; one step-son, John Neal of Charleston, SC; 15 grandchildren, nine step-grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, 11 step-great-grandchildren and one step-great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

Howard Edward Hamm, age 68, of Whitetop, Va. passed away Tuesday, Dec. 3 at his residence.
Funeral services were held Friday, Dec. 6 at 11 a.m. in Helton Valley Baptist Church in Whitetop, Va. Burial followed in Walls cemetery. Rev. David Lyalls, Rev. Kenneth Clark, Rev. Wayne Roark, Rev. Allen Miller and Rev. Rex Hall officiated.
Mr. Hamm was born Jan. 25, 1934 in Mountain City, Tenn. to Lester and Ella Carpenter Hamm.
He is survived by his wife, Lula Bell Hamm; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Lacy and Louise Hamm of Lansing, Ronald Hamm and friend, Kathy Cornett of Whitetop, Va. and Michael and Wendy Hamm of West Jefferson; four sisters and one brother-in-law, Frances Blevins of Whitetop, Va., Erma and Linville Blevins of Barto, Pa., Mary Wallace of West Jefferson and Ruby Waddell of Jefferson; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Bill and Beverly Hamm of Cherokee and Len and Debbie Hamm of Grant, Va.; special friend, Ralph Finley of Whitetop, Va.; six grandchildren and one great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.

James Richard Osborne

James Richard Osborne was born on Friday, Jan. 3, 1947 to William Conley Osborne and Pearl Edna Brown Osborne of Creston.
On Thursday, Nov. 28, Mr. Osborne died in Ashe Living Center in Jefferson. The Lord shared him here on earth for 55 years, 10 months and 25 days.
He was preceded in death by his father, William Conley Osborne.
In addition to his mother, Pearl Brown Osborne of Creston, he is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Nancy and Peanut Rupard; two nephews, Clay Rupard and Matthew Rupard; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
The family of Mr. Osborne received friends on Saturday, Nov. 30 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Boone Family Funeral Home in West Jefferson.
The funeral service was conducted on Sunday, Dec. 1 at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of Boone Family Funeral Home by Rev. Darrell Graybeal and Rev. Bruce Roten.
Burial followed in the Brown cemetery.
The family will appreciate flowers or suggest memorials be given to Ashe County ADAP, Attn.: Larry Ballou, PO Box 68, Lansing, NC 28643.

Wade Thomas Cox, age 54, died Monday morning, Dec. 2 at Ashe Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Dec. 5 at 2 p.m. at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel. Dr. Calvin Miller and Rev. Jack Pugh officiated. Burial followed in the Cox Family cemetery.
The family received friends from noon until 2 p.m. on Thursday, prior to the service.
Mr. Cox was born in Ashe County on Monday, April 19, 1948 to Fred Barton Cox and Clyde Miller Cox. He worked as a carpenter in construction work. He served in the United States Army in Vietnam.
The Lord shared Wade with us for 54 years, 7 months, 13 days, before taking him to his heavenly home.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred Barton Cox and Clyde Miller Cox; and a brother, Lester Cox.
He is survived by his wife, Ina Dillard Cox of the home; a daughter, Jennifer Haston of Harrisburg; five brothers, Willard Cox of Taylorsville, James Cox, Fred Cox, Wayland Cox and Larry Cox, all of West Jefferson; six sisters, Lula Severt, Annie Severt, Lola Cox, Mary Miller, Lenna Hodgson and Barbara Cox, all of West Jefferson; and several nieces and nephews.

Rozina McClure Hodges, age 72, of West Jefferson, died Tuesday evening, Dec. 3 at Ashe Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 7 at 1 p.m. at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in the Ashelawn Memorial Gardens cemetery. The family received friends one hour prior to the service.
Mrs. Hodges was born in Ashe County on Thursday, June 26, 1930 to Wiley McClure and Lou Ella Eller McClure. She was a homemaker.
The Lord shared her with us for 72 years, five months and seven days before taking her to the heavenly home.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Dean Franklin Hodges on March 9, 1994.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Tommy and Starla Hodges of Glendale Springs; two brothers, Dalford McClure and Alonzo McClure, both of Valdese; six sisters, Bernice Abee of Valdese, Bertha Woodie of South Carolina, Nell Karriker of Gastonia, Wanda Mae Cooper of Galax, Va., Leona Moone of Iron City and Joanne Gheen of Mansfield, Ohio; four grandchildren, Greg Cox, Crystal Cox, Jed Hodges and Sarah Hodges; and several nieces and nephews.

Norma Welborn Parker, age 89, of West Jefferson, died at her home on Wednesday, Dec. 4, following a lengthy illness.
The family received friends on Saturday, Dec. 7 from 1-2 p.m. at West Jefferson United Methodist Church with the funeral following at 2 p.m. at the church where she was an active member for many years. Rev. Kirk McNeill and Rev. A.B. Weaver officiated. Graveside services were held at West Jefferson City cemetery.
Mrs. Parker was born to Sherman Welborn and Nancy Greene Welborn of Deep Gap on March 24, 1913. She was a 1933 graduate of Boone High School. For many years she was a cosmetologist in West Jefferson and the owner of the Mayflower Beauty Shop. Following her retirement, she lived at Nikanor Acres, which represented part of her name.
She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Nancy P. Edwards of West Jefferson and Joyce P. Tucker of Concord; two sons-in-law, John C. Edwards Sr. and Jim Roe Tucker; four grandchildren, John Edwards Jr., Candy Lucas, Edwin Tucker and Ethan Tucker; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ed Welborn of North Wilkesboro and Johnson Welborn of Deep Gap; a sister, Jennie Hollar of Boone; a half-sister, Carolyn Austin of Boone; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be made to West Jefferson United Methodist Church, PO Box 826, West Jefferson, NC 28694 or to Hospice of Ashe, PO Box 421, Jefferson, NC 28640.

Virginia Ocia Brown Harris, age 65, of Fleetwood, died Friday, Nov. 29 at Ashe Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Dec. 4 at 1 p.m. in the Chapel of Boone Family Funeral Home. Burial followed in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens. The family received friends on Tuesday, Dec. 3 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Boone Family Funeral Home.
Ms. Harris was born in Boston, Mass. on Wednesday, March 3, 1937 to the late William Jeffery Brown Jr. and Eunice Barbara Callupy Brown.
She was a 1955 graduate of Rosarian Academy in West Palm Beach, Fla. and Chestnut Hill Hospital School of Nursing in Philadelphia, Pa.
She had retired from Ashe Memorial Hospital where she had served as a registered nurse. She had also volunteered at Cline-Church Nursery.
She was a member of St. Francis Church.
An avid reader, her favorite author was Nora Roberts. She also enjoyed crafts and flowers. Her dog, Gizmo, was her closest companion. But the primary focus of her life was her family. She delighted in spoiling her grandsons with their favorite food: macaroni and cheese.
She leaves here to cherish her memory, her son and daughter-in-law, Mason and Tracy Harris Sr. of Fleetwood; her brother, William J. Brown III of Wasco, Calif.; her grandsons, Mason “Boddie” Harris Jr. and Dillon Harris, both of Fleetwood; and her dog, Gizmo, of the home.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, c/o Judy Leek, 206 Oak Grove Circle, Jefferson, NC 28640.
