Winifred L. “Van” Vannoy, age 78, died June 11 in Ft. Pierce, Fla.
Visitation was held Monday, June 16 at Haisley-Hobbs Funeral Home in Ft. Pierce, Fla. Service will be Tuesday, June 17 at 10 a.m. at Haisley-Hobbs Chapel with Evangelist Michael Combs officiating. Burial will follow at Riverview Memorial Park.
Mr. Vannoy was born in Creston and moved to Ft. Pierce, Fla. in 1957 from Fleetwood. He was the owner/operator of Van’s TV in Ft. Pierce for 14 years. He was also a chief security officer at Jai-Alai for 12 years. He was a veteran in the U.S. Navy in WWII. He was preceded in death by his son, Ronnie Vannoy and sister, Christine Leonard.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Lorraine D. Vannoy of Ft. Pierce, Fla.; daughters, Bonnie Lundy of Niangua, Mo., Denise Combs and husband Michael of Fleetwood and Dorothy Buxton of Ft. Pierce, Fla.; son, Dennis Vannoy and wife, Terri of Fleetwood; sisters, Violet Vannoy of Fleetwood, Iris Watson of Deep Gap and Dawn Houck of Fleetwood; brothers, Leonard and Jay Vannoy, both of Winston Salem; nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Treasure Coast, PO Box 1748, Ft. Pierce, FL 34954.
Haisley-Hobbs Funeral Home of Ft. Pierce, Fla. was in charge of local arrangements.

Thomas Perkins

Thomas Franklin Perkins, age 87, died Sunday, June 8 at Meadowbrook Terrace.
Funeral services were held at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 11 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel in Winston-Salem by Rev. Katherine Fox. Burial followed in the Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family received friends from 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., prior to the service.
Mr. Perkins was born Aug. 26, 1915 in Ashe County to the late Charlie and Denia Osborn Perkins. He served in the US Army Air Corp during World War II and was retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. He was preceded in death by his wife, Cora Perkins.
He is survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home of Winston-Salem was in charge of the arrangements.

Lura Shoaf

Lura Edith Barr Shoaf, age 97 of Warrensville, died Tuesday, June 10, at Ashe Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Shoaf was born June 10, 1906, in Ashe County. Her husband, John Shoaf, preceded her in death. Mrs. Shoaf was the oldest member of the Warrensville Baptist Church. She taught the children’s Sunday school class at Warrensville Baptist for many years. She loved bird watching and quilting. She was a mother to the community, and will be greatly missed.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Thursday, June 12, at the Warrensville Baptist Church with Rev. Wayne Osborne officiating. Burial followed in the Jefferson cemetery. The family received friends from 10-11 a.m. prior to the service.
Eleven nieces and nephews survive Mrs. Shoaf.

Charles Adkins
West Jefferson

Charles Junior Adkins, age 77 of West Jefferson, died Tuesday afternoon, June 10, at his home.
Funeral services were held Thursday, June 12, at 1 p.m. at the Trinity Baptist Church in Deep Gap with Rev. Nathan Caparolie officiating. Interment followed in the Church cemetery with military rites.
The family received friends from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. at Trinity Baptist Church prior to the funeral service.
Mr. Adkins was born Friday, Feb. 19, 1926, in Wayne, W.Va., to Presley and Verna Parsons Adkins. He served in the United States Army and was a veteran of the Korean War. He retired from General Motors.
He is survived by his wife, Ruby Adkins; two daughters, Brenda Adkins and Beverly Minton, both of West Jefferson; one brother, Willie Ray Adkins, of Wayne, W.Va..; two sisters, Joyce Green, of Jacksonville, Fla., and Annie Ratliffe, of West Virginia; four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Boone Family Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Rev. Paul Atwood

Rev. Paul L. Atwood, age 72, of Sparta, passed away Sunday, June 8 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
He was born May 30, 1931, in Hickory to the late Hazel and Sophina Darnell Atwood.
Rev. Atwood was the pastor of Fellowship Baptist Church in Elk Creek, Va., where he had served for 19 years. He was a former pastor of Laurel Springs Baptist Church, having served for 15 years.
He is survived by his wife, Frances Atwood of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael W. and Jennifer Atwood, of Sparta; a daughter and son-in-law, Donna A. and Phillip A. Hunt of Sanford; a stepson, Gary F. Gullion, of Darlington, Md.; and a special friend, Richard A. Mooneyhan, of Piney Creek; five grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.
The funeral service was conducted at 11 a.m., Wednesday, June 11, at Fellowship Baptist Church in Elk Creek Va. by Rev. Don Ball. Interment was in Comers Rock cemetery. Rev. Don Ball officiated.
Arrangements were by Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home in Independence, Va.

Lawrence Holman

Lawrence Leon Holman, age 48, of Butler, Tenn., passed away Monday, June 9, at the residence after an extended illness.
He was born May 5, 1955, to Ralph Holman and Effie Dishman. He was a painter and construction worker and enjoyed working on cars. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Mr. Holman is survived by his wife, Dianna Faye Matkins Holman of the home; one daughter, Laura Francis Holman of Pennsylvania; one son, Lawrence Leon Holman Jr. of Mountain City, Tenn.; three sisters, Brenda Buff of Hickory, Myrtle Pierce, of Oxford, Penn., Dorothy Holman, of Maryland; four brothers, Mark Holman and Vernon Holman, both of Todd, David Holman of Wilkesboro, Leonard Holman of Boone; three grandchildren, Hope Holman, Jeremy Holman, and Jonathon Holman, all of Pennsylvania; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Friday, June 13, from the Chapel of the Hux-Lipford Funeral Home in Mountain City, Tenn. Pallbearers were nephews of Mr. Holman. The family received friends from 10-11 a.m. at the Chapel prior to services. Burial was in the Holman Family cemetery.

Nadine Denman
Johnstown, Ohio

Nadine (Bare) Denman of Johnstown, Ohio passed away June 13 at her residence following a brief battle with cancer.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today at Crouse-Kauber-Sammons Funeral Home in Johnstown, Ohio with Father Richard Metzger officiating. Burial will be held in the Green Hill cemetery. The family received friends from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. yesterday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Denman was born April 19, 1932 in Wagoner in Ashe County to Bart and Nora Bare. She was a 1949 graduate of Johnstown-Monroe High School, a member of the Church of The Ascension, a former member of the Square Wheels Camping and Dance Club and The Betty Cornwell Memorial Golf League. She retired from Lazarus after working 13 years in the downtown store. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Eva Zelle; brothers, Buster, Herbert, Hansel, Gale and Dennis; and a granddaughter, Amity Marie Westbrock.
She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Tom Denman; daughters, Deborah (Paul) Westbrock of Dublin, Ohio and Susan (Michael) Ellis of Valrico, Fla.; sons, David (Patricia) of Dublin, Ohio and Tim (Jacquie) of Johnstown, Ohio; one sister, Anna D. Green of Johnstown, Ohio; brothers, Harold Bare of Johnstown, Ohio and J.B. (Doris) Bare of Grove City, Ohio; grandchildren, Michael (Shannon), Matthew, Christopher, Susan, Amber, Lisa, Carrie, Beau and David; great-grandchildren, Drake, Carson and Cassidy; and numerous dear relatives and friends.
Memorials may be made to Mount Carmel Hospice, 1144 Dublin Road, Columbus, Ohio 43215-1039.

Martha Fay Osborne Miller, age 90, of Creston, died Monday, June 9, at the Ashe Living Center. Mrs. Miller was born April 10, 1913, in Ashe County to the late George and Rhoda Osborne. In addition to her parents, her husband James Miller preceded her in death.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, June 11 at the Gillespie Presbyterian Church. Rev. Earl Woods, Rev. Cleo Greer and Rev. Jim Francis officiated. Burial followed in the Roten cemetery. The family received friends from 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday, June 10, at Badger Funeral Home.
Mrs. Miller is survived by six sons, Dempsy, William, Wayne and George Barr, all of Creston, Marvin Barr, of Warrensville, and James Barr, of Crumpler; three daughters, Lorene Calhoun and Mary Ruth Pennington, both of Lansing, and Lorie Ann Greer, of Creston; a brother, Junior Osborne, of Creston; three sisters, Maggie Roten, of Creston, Pearl Flanagan, of Hickory, and Beryl Berry, of Virginia; 16 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Mabel Church Cheek, age 84 of Fleetwood, died Monday afternoon, June 9 at Watauga Medical Center.
Funeral services were held Thursday, June 12 at 2 p.m. at Old Fields Baptist Church in Fleetwood. Rev. Jack Miller, Rev. Sherrill Wellborn and Rev. Sammy Church officiated. Burial followed in the Old Fields Church cemetery.
Mrs. Cheek was born Sept. 1, 1918 in the West Pine Swamp community of Ashe County, to the late Linza Horton and Mary Ellen Moore Church. She was a homemaker and a member of Old Fields Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Lee Cheek; four brothers, Roe Church, Earl Church, Burl Church and Ocel Church; and five sisters, Alma Hawthorne, Edna Fairchild, Thelma Church, Mae Church and Ruth Phillips.
She is survived by two daughters, Loraine Grogan and husband, Eugene of Hudson, and Carolyn Pierce and husband, Archie of West Jefferson; two sons, Norman Cheek of Deep Gap and Curtis Cheek and wife, Peggy, of Warrensville; one sister, Mary Lee Phillips of Asheville; 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be made to the old Gap Creek cemetery Fund, c/o Carolyn Pierce, 303 Highway 194 South, West Jefferson, NC 28694.

Lena Mae Trivette Jones, age 48, of Warrensville, died Tuesday, June 10, at North Carolina Baptist Hospital.
Funeral services were held Friday, June 13, at 11 a.m. at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Chuck Call. Burial followed in the Clint Gilley cemetery.
The family received friends from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, June 12, at Boone Family Funeral Home.
Mrs. Jones was born in Ashe County on Wednesday, Nov. 3, 1954, to Glenn Trivette and Lundy Miller Trivette. She was a homemaker. Her father, Glenn Trivette, preceded her in death.
She is survived by her husband, Carol Clay Jones; a daughter, Gail Williams; her mother, Lundy Louise Miller Trivette of Fleetwood; a stepson, Timmy Jones of Lansing; a step-daughter, Dawn Boggs of Jefferson; six brothers, Gary Trivette, Jimmy Trivette, Ralph Trivette, Rodney Trivette, Ronnie Trivette and Tommy Trivette, all of Fleetwood; a sister, Geneva Isaacs of Vilas; four step-grandchildren, Dalton Boggs, Dillon Boggs, Ivory Jones and Curtis Jones; and several nieces and nephews.

Mary Mae Dishman Roland, age 76 of Jefferson, died Sunday, June 15 at the Ashe Living Center.
Funeral services will be held today at 2 p.m. at the Badger Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Glenn Woodie and Rev. Jason Shelton will officiate. Burial will follow in the Roland Family cemetery. The family received friends June 16 from 7-9 p.m. at Badger Funeral Home.
Mrs. Roland was born Nov. 29, 1926 in Ashe County to Riley and Cordelia Barker Dishman.
She is survived by her husband, Joseph Eugene Roland; one daughter, Mary Gay Yelton of Jefferson; two brothers, Mont Dishman and Guy Dishman, both of Jefferson; three sisters, Sally Miller and Tencie McNeill, both of West Jefferson and Fredar Miller of Jefferson; two grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and two step-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Donald “Gene” Stanley

Donald Eugene Stanley, better known as Gene, age 78 of Jefferson, died Monday, July 28, at his home. Mr. Stanley was born February 18, 1925, in Ashe County to Robert and Ida Stanley. He was a member of the Glendale Springs Presbyterian Church, where he served as deacon and treasurer. He retired from Sprague Electric Company, and after retirement he enjoyed gardening and growing Christmas trees.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m., Thursday, July 31, at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel. Rev. Gordon Finley, Rev. George Norris and Rev. David Blackburn officiated. Burial followed in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens with military rites. The family received friends from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, July 30, at Badger Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Ashe, P.O. Box 421, Jefferson NC 28640.
Mr. Stanley is survived by his wife, Lenna Rae Stanley; one son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Rebecca Stanley of Johnson City, Tenn.; one daughter and son-in-law, Marsha and Wayne Williams of Plano, Texas; two grandchildren, Erica McNeil and husband B.J. of Huron, S.D. and John Von Runnen and wife Kristy of Dallas, Texas; five grandchildren, Caitlyn McNeil, Kylie, Jordyn, Jaron and Kole Von Runnen; one brother, Bobby Stanley of Jefferson; three sisters, Ada Duffin and Mae Morrison, both of Jefferson, and Ruth Lockhart of North Wilkesboro; several nieces and nephews.

Wayne Blair Ferguson, age 90, of Jefferson died Wednesday morning, July 30, at Ashe Living Center.
Funeral services were held Friday, August 1, at 2 p.m. at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. David Grinnell and Rev. Bob Miller. Burial followed in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens cemetery.
The family received friends from 7-9 p.m. on Thursday, July 31, at Boone Family Funeral Home.
Mr. Ferguson was born in Haywood County on Sunday, Nov. 3, 1912, to Hugh Glen Ferguson and Charlotte Howell Ferguson. He was a supervisor of the Farmer’s Home Administration. A member at Friendship Baptist Church, he served as a deacon and was a Sunday school teacher. He was preceded in death by his wife, Blanche Howell Ferguson; a daughter, Becky Caudill; and a sister, Mary E. Trull.
He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, David and Virginia Ferguson of Chapel Hill, and Marvin and Wanda Ferguson of Jefferson; a daughter and son-in-law, Corothy and Paul Sims of Garner; two step-daughters, Becky Christopher and husband Al of Destin, Fla., and Mildred Houck and husband Mike of Cummings, Ga.; a brother, Hugh Ferguson of Julian; one sister, Lillian Enloe of Whittier; seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews also survive.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Ashe, P.O. Box 421, Jefferson NC 28640 or Friendship Baptist Church Building Fund, c/o Ronnie Sturgill, 299 Sturgill Lane, Crumpler NC 28617 or to the donor’s choice.

Sarah Blevins

Sarah Lucretta Gaultney Blevins, age 91, of Kannapolis, formerly of Ashe County, died Monday, July 28, at the Transitional Health Services in Kannapolis. Mrs. Blevins was born July 20, 1912, in Wise County, Va., to the late Jeffs and Bertha Gaultney. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Brownlow Blevins, and two sons, Zane and Gerald Blevins. Mrs. Blevins moved to Ashe County from Virginia at age 15 and lived here until moving to Kannapolis in 1956.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, July 30, at the Healing Springs Baptist Church. Rev. David Jones officiated. Burial followed in the Healing Springs cemetery. The family received friends from 1-2 p.m. prior to the service.
Mrs. Blevins is survived by one daughter, Sue Shaffer of Chickasha, Okla.; three sons, Ed Blevins of Warrensville, Alan Blevins of Monroe and James Blevins of Kannapolis; two brothers, Ed Gaultney of Kings Mountain and Claude Gaultney of Ashe County; 21 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Earl Estelle Parsons, age 68, of Jefferson died Monday, July 28, at the North Carolina Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem. Mr. Parsons was born May 5, 1935, in Ashe County to the late Tom and Carrie Parsons.
Graveside services were held at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, July 29, at the Big Piney cemetery in Lansing. Rev. Joe Riley Blevins officiated.
Mr. Parsons is survived by three sisters, Bessie Taylor of Jefferson, Melvina Barnes of Crumpler, and Leona Hagar of Princeton, W.Va.
Badger Funeral Home was in charge of these arrangements.
