Mr. Steve C. Sturgill, age 89 of West Main St., passed away Friday, May 28 at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital. He was born April 7, 1915 in Ashe County to Estel and Ella Ingram Sturgill.
Mr. Sturgill was retired from Westinghouse in Baltimore, Md. where he worked in public relations. He was a member of Elkin First Baptist Church where he served as an usher. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army where he served in the Pacific during WWII. He also held memberships with VFW Post 7794 and the Lions Club both of Elkin. In addition to his parents, Mr. Sturgill was preceded in death by one brother, Bill Sturgill; three sisters, Cora Frasier, Lannie Spencer and Ersa Dell Sturgill; one daughter, Joyce Colson and one step daughter, Martha Shepherd Lusk.
Survivors include: his wife, Valma Shepherd Sturgill of the home; two sons, George Sturgill and Steve Sturgill Jr., both of Aldie, Va.; one daughter, Patricia Croson of Manassas, Va.; one stepson, James "Jim" Shepherd and his wife Mary of Elkin; two stepdaughters: Lynn Shepherd Bolls and her husband Bobby of Shelbyville, Ind. and Jane Shepherd Eaton and her husband Ray of Winston Salem; 15 grandchildren, Sarah Sturgill, Jennifer Lloyd, David Croson, Debbie Campbell, Angie Colson, Vince Eaton, Crystal Mendenhall, Elizabeth Lusk, Wil Lusk, Kivlina Block, Isaac Shepherd, Joseph Shepherd, Nicholas Shepherd and Sampson Shepherd; six great-grandchildren, Brittany Campbell, Kayla Lloyd, Alec Lloyd, Liam Block, Drew Mendenhall and Solomon Shepherd.
A memorial service was held Sunday, May 30 at 5 p.m. at Elkin First Baptist Church by Dr. Bill Johnson. The family received friends one hour prior to the service in the church fellowship hall.
Memorials may be made to the Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital Chapel Fund at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital, PO Box 560 Elkin, NC 28621 or to the donor’s choice.

Died: May 31, 2004
Morg Trivett, age 81, passed away Monday, May 31 at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen, Texas.
Funeral arrangements were under the direction of San Benito Funeral Home in San Benito, Texas.

Anne Zaccarellia VanDyke age 86, of Saint Augustine, Fla. died Tuesday, June 1 at the Flager Hospital in Saint Augustine, Fla.
Funeral services were held Saturday, June 5 at 11 a.m. at the Badger Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Jim Greer officiated. Burial followed in the Ashelawn Memorial Gardens. The family received friends Saturday, June 5 from 10-11 a.m. at Badger Funeral Home.
Mrs. VanDyke was born on Sept. 7, 1917 in Chester County, Pa. to Domonic and Rose Zaccarellia.
She is survived by her husband, William VanDyke Sr.; three stepsons, Eddie L. VanDyke and William R. VanDyke, both of Pennsylvania and William VanDyke Jr. of Wilkesboro; three stepdaughters, Carolyn Roldan, Betty Jane Olquin and Shirley Sharrar all of Pennsylvania; two brothers, John and Joe Zaccarellia both of Pennsylvania; two grandchildren and 15 step-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Rita R. Caudill age 79 of Grassy Creek, died Sunday, January 30, at the Ashe Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Caudill was born in Louneburg, Va. on June 1, 1925 to Charles Reid, Sr. and Ida Mae Spencer Edwards.
Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, February 1, at 2 p.m. at the Badger Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Lloyd Day and Father Randy Rule will officiate. Burial will follow in the Haw Orchard cemetery. The family received friends Monday, January 31, from 7 - 9 p.m. at Badger Funeral Home.
Mrs. Caudill is survived by three sons, George R, Rutherford of Bellview, Ohio, James Stafford Sherrod of Pollock Pines, Calif., and Donald Glynn Sherrod of King, N.C.; one daughter, Jacki Caudill Miller of Grassy Creek; one brother, Charles Reid "Eddie" Edwards, Jr. of Roanoke, Va.; one sister, Mae Rule of Chester, Va.; 10 Grandchildren 5 Great Grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

John Worth Greene, age 90, of Grassy Creek, died Wednesday, January 26, at Ashe Memorial Hospital. Mr. Greene was born August 14, 1914 in Avery County to the late George Terah Greene and Martha Elizabeth Elliott Greene.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Friday, January 28, at the Pleasant Home Baptist Church. Rev. Rick Miller and Rev. Rick Cornejo officiated. Burial followed in the Pleasant Home Baptist Church cemetery. The family received friends from 1 till 2 p.m. prior to the funeral service. Harris Earl Malpass

Harris Earl Malpass age 89 of West Jefferson died Sunday, January 30, at the Ashe Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Malpass was born in Pender County, on December 26, 1915 to Gus and Effie Malpass. He was preceded in death by spouses Cleta Wiggins, Emily Burney, and Morva Register. Mr. Malpass served his country honorably in the United States Navy in World War II. He worked and retired from Barefoot and Jackson Furniture after 40 years as a sales representative.
Funeral services were held Monday, January 31, at 4 p.m. at Badger Funeral Home Chapel in West Jefferson. Rev. Billy Joe Blevins officiated. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 2, at 2 p.m. at the Andrews Funeral Home Chapel in Wilmington. Rev. Michael Tutterow and Rev. Rodney Norris will officiat. Burial will follow Wednesday, February 2, in the Greenlawn Memorial Gardens cemetery in Wilmington. The family will receive friends Wednesday, February 2, from 1 - 2 p.m. at Andrews Funeral Home Chapel. Memorials may be made to the Winter Park Baptist Church, 4700 Wrightsville Ave, Wilmington, NC 28403.
Mr. Malpass is survived by three daughters, Judy Ozment, Jane Norris, and Sara Gilliland all of West Jefferson; step-daughter, Mary Jo Collier of Wilmington; dear friend: Edith Mahala of Jefferson;10 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandchild, 1 step grandchild and several Nieces and Nephews.

Jean Marie Dixon Reedy, age 50, of Rugby, Va., passed away Thursday, January 27 at her home. Born March 21, 1954 at Statesville to Odell Dixon and Lela Jean Roten Dixon.
Surviving Mrs. Dixon is her husband, Rev. Dusty Reedy; two daughters and sons-inlaw, Dana Marie and Tommy Burns or Warrensville, and Donna Renay and Michael Bauguess of Lansing; two granddaughters, Brittany Burns and Sabrina Burns; father, Odell Dixon of Lexington; mother, Lela Robinson of Galax; six sisters and spouses, Joanne Pardue of Lexington, Jeanette Fender of Sparta, Teresa and Ricky Greene of Ennice, Josie and Scottie Wooten, Jackie and Sanford Burnett, and Wanda and Billy Newman all of Galax; one brother, James Dixon of Galax; several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services were held Sunday, January 30 in Corinth Baptist Church in Rugby, Va. Rev Dennis Eller and Rev. Reeves Jones officiated.

Minerva Richardson Roop, age 91, of Whitetop, Va., passed away Wednesday, January 26, at Grayson Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Independence.
She was the widow of Roy Lee Roop. Born November 29, 1913 at Whitetop to John and Mollie Dolinger Richardson.
Surviving, two daughters, Ocil Roop and friend, Johnny Davis of Crumpler, and Anita Stamper and husband Donnie of Whitetop; four sons and daughters-in-law, Gene Lloyd and Virginia Roop, Roger and Janet Roop, Clifford and Faye Roop and Otis and Marsha Roop, all of Whitetop; two sisters, Pearl Weaver of Whitetop and Hazel R. Sellers of North East, Md.; one brother and sister-in-law, Howard and Lucy Richardson, Sugar Grove, Va.; eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral Services were conducted Friday, January 28 at 11 a.m. in Whitetop Baptist Church. Rev. T.A. Pennington and Rev. Rex Hall officiated.
The family received friends Thursday, January 27 from 6 - 8 p.m. at the
church. Memorial contributions may be made to Whitetop Baptist Church Building Fund, C/O Rev. and Mrs. T.A. Pennington, 15771 Highlands Parkway, Whitetop, VA 24292.

Paul Leon Stacy age 79 of West Jefferson, died Monday, January 24, at his residence. Mr. Stacy was born in Indianapolis, Indiana on November 25, 1925 to Henry and Flora Alward Stacy.
A private memorial will be held with family members at a later date.
Mr. Stacy is survived by his wife, Carolyn Smock Stacy; one son, Stephen Stacy of West Jefferson; one daughter, Amy Michels of Creston; one granddaughter, Dixie Jarman of Warrensville.

Died February 5, 2005
Mrs. Effie Peggy Dollinger Ballou age 91 of Murfreesboro, Tenn. formally of Lansing, died Saturday morning, February 5, in Tenn.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 9, at 11 a.m. at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Dwight Barker. Burial will follow in the Perry Family cemetery in Lansing.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday evening, February 8, at Boone Family Funeral Home.
Mrs. Ballou is survived by three brothers, Charles Dollinger of Bonita Springs, Fla., Ancel Dollinger of Lehigh Acres, Fla., Kenneth Dollinger of Gaithersburg, Md.; several nieces and nephews also survive.

George Virgil Hartzog

Mr. George Virgil Hartzog, age 82, of West Jefferson, died Monday afternoon, January 31, at Ashe Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, February 2, at 2 p.m. at Mt. Jefferson Presbyterian Church by Dr. Leighton Culler. Burial followed in the Ashelawn Memorial Gardens with military rites.
The family received friends from 12:30 - 2 p.m. on Wednesday, prior to the funeral service.
Mr. Hartzog was born in Ashe County on Wednesday, June 21, 1922 to the late John Hartzog and to the late Sally Bedville Hartzog. He served in the United States Army, during the World War II, where he received a Purple Heart Medal. He worked with Southern Devices Mfg, where he was a Supervisor.
He is survived by his wife, Helen Morgan Hartzog, of the home; a son, Keith Hartzog, of West Jefferson; a brother, Burl W. Hartzog, of West Jefferson also survives.

Mrs. Agnes Irene Jones, age 86 of West Jefferson. Died Saturday, February 5, at Seagraves Nursing Care Center.
Funeral services were held Monday, February 7, at 11 a.m. at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Junior Miller and Rev. Lonnie Jones. Burial followed in Howell-Hill cemetery in Lansing.
The family received friends from 10-11 a.m. Monday, February 7, prior to the Funeral service at Boone family Funeral Home.
Mrs. Jones was born on June 25, 1918 to the late Winfield and the late Effie Jones. She was a self employed baby-sitter.
Mrs. Jones is survived by one daughter, Agnes and J.M. Richardson of Warrensville; one brother, Garfield Jones of Jefferson; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Dellarae Hamm Lewis, age 77, of Whitetop, Va., passed away Sunday, January 30 at Ashe Memorial Hospital. She was the widow of Reggie Lewis.
Born August 14, 1927 in Ashe County to Joe and Sarah Calhoun Hamm. She was preceded in death by two sons, Tommy Lewis and Carl Lewis.
Survivors include two daughters and spouses, Patsy and Ralph Finley of Whitetop, and Linda and J.D. Miller of Crumpler; two sons and spouses, Harley and Joann Lewis of Rugby, and Lawrence and Wanda Lewis of Whitetop; 11 grandchildren and four great grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, February 2 in Helton Valley Baptist Church. Rev. Lundy Finley and Rev. Rex Hall officiated.
Memorial contributions may be made to Mt. Rogers Fire and Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 4, Whitetop, VA 24292.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Sunday February 6, at the Glendale Springs Baptist Church. Rev. Keith Elledge and Rev. Fredrick Dixon officiated. Burial followed in the Glendale Springs Baptist Church cemetery.

Mrs. Nancy Reeves Barr Severt, age 63, of West Jefferson, died Friday, January 28, at Carolina Medical Center in Charlotte.
A memorial service was held Tuesday, February 1, at 11 a.m. at Mount Jefferson Presbyterian Church by Dr. Leighton Culler and Rev. Kermit Dancy.
The family received friends one hour prior to the memorial service.
Mrs. Severt was born in Lincolnton, on Thursday, September 11, 1941 to the late Russell Wilson Barr, Sr. and to the late Myrtle Irene Reeves Barr. She was a retired schoolteacher. She taught at Beaver Creek High School.
She is survived by her husband, Leonard Severt, of the home; two daughters, Natalie Stuart and husband, Norman, of West Jefferson and Angelia Severt of Mooresville; a brother, Wilson Barr and wife, Linda, of West Jefferson; four sisters, Jane Ring, of Winston-Salem, Ann Wagoner, of Taylorsville, Elizabeth Johnson, of Petersburg, Va. and Susan McNeil, of Elon; two grandchildren, Whitney Stuart and Tyler Stuart, of West Jefferson; several nieces and nephews also survives.
Memorials may be made to: Mount Jefferson Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 782, West Jefferson, NC 28694.

Mr. Shatley was born in Ashe County on September 16, 1958 to Reeves and Nellie Lambert Shatley.
Funeral Services were held Saturday, February 5, at 2 p.m. at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel. Rev. Lonnie Jones and Rev. Ken Morris officiated. Burial followed in the Ashelawn Memorial Gardens. Mr. Shatley is survived by a special Friend, Pam Shatley; two sons, Nathan Shatley of Crumpler and Andrew Shatley of Boone; one daughter, Laura Winterton of West Jefferson; mother, Nellie Shatley of Crumpler; five brothers, Cecil Shatley, Thomas Shatley, Joe Shatley, Dallas Shatley, Johnny Shatley all of Crumpler; one sister, Joan Faw of Crumpler; three grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
