Mr. Michael Edward Finley, age 51, of West Jefferson, died Wednesday, December 7, 2005 in California.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, December 17, 2005 at 12 p.m. at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Keith Woodie officiating. Burial followed in the Roberts Family cemetery.
The family received friends from 11 – 12 p.m. on Saturday one hour prior to the funeral service.
Mr. Finley was born in San Mateo, California on Tuesday, April 6, 1954 to James Edward Finley and to the late Lila Wave Testerman Finley. He was a truck driver.
He is survived by three sons, Brandon Williams, of Hickory, Caleb Finley and Chesson Finley, both of West Jefferson; his father, James Finley, of Oklahoma; a brother, Randy Finley; three sisters, Kathy, Carolyn and Sharon also survive.

John Rector Rash
Crumpler
October 17, 1922 - December 15, 2005
Mr. John Rector Rash, age 83, of Crumpler, died Thursday morning, December 15, 2005 at Carolina Specialty Hospital.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, December 18, 2005 at 2 p.m. at Shelter Baptist Church with Rev. Ken Howell and Rev. Reeves Jones officiating. Burial followed in the Scott-Blevins cemetery with military rites.
The family received friends from 7 – 9 p.m. on Saturday, December 17, 2005 at Boone Family Funeral Home.
Mr. Rash was born in Ashe County on October 17, 1922 to the late Adolphus Arthur Rash and the late Ida Mary Louise Blevins. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was an agricultural farmer. He was also a member at Shelter Baptist Church.
He is survived by two sons, James Robert Rash and Joseph Wiley Rash, both of Crumpler; two daughters, Colleen Tucker and Carlean Lyall, both of Crumpler; a sister, Bertha Marie Brown, of Jefferson; three grandchildren; several nieces and nephews also survive.
Flowers were accepted or memorials may be made to: Shelter Baptist Church, c/o Cleda Wilcox, 146 East Dogwood Drive, West Jefferson, NC 28694 or to Scott-Blevins cemetery, c/o Arlie Blevins, 4326 Old Hwy. 16, Jefferson, NC 28640.

August 23, 1964 - December 15, 2005
Keith Rash, age 41, of Todd, died Thursday, December 15, 2005, at his home.
Mr. Rash was born August 23, 1964 in Watauga County to Charles and Marie Rash.
Mr. Rash was preceded in death by his father, Charles Rash; two brothers; J. C. Rash and Paul Rash, two sisters; Diane Rash and Bernice Taylor.
Funeral services were held Monday, December 19, 2005, 2 p.m. at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Ronda Rash and the Rev. Frank Rash. Burial followed in the Rash cemetery in Todd. The family received friends from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. Monday, December 19, 2005, at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel prior to the service.
He is survived by his mother, Marie Rash of Todd; five brothers, Joe, Jeffrey, Buford, Bernard Rash all of Todd and Jerry Rash of Fleetwood; three sisters, Betty Rash of Todd, Patricia Richardson of West Jefferson, and Ruth Day of Boone. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Ashelawn Memorial Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Charles Noel Sheets
Altamonte Springs, Fla.
October 6, 1916 - December 9, 2005
Mr. Charles Noel Sheets, age 89 of Altamonte Springs, FL, formerly of Ashe County, died Friday, December 9, 2005 at his home.
Mr. Sheets was born October 6, 1916 in Ashe County to the late Robert and Maggie Woodie Sheets. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Pennington and four brothers; Herbert, Vernon Cliff and John Paul Sheets. Mr. Sheets was a US Navy veteran serving in WWII. He was a VFW member. He loved gospel music. He was foreman at the Central Florida Zoo. He worked 25 years at Myers-Gallagher.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, December 14, 2005 at Badger Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Steve Viers officiated. Burial followed in the Big Ridge cemetery. The family received friends from 6 - 8 p.m. Tuesday, December 13 at Badger Funeral Home.
Mr. Sheets is survived by wife, Margie Jenkins Sheets; daughter, Margaret Sheets of the home; sons, Gregory Sheets and wife, Pam, of Apopka, FL and David Sheets and wife, Rita, of Sanford, FL; sister, Virginia Springer of Browns Mills, NJ; grandchildren, Chuck Sheets, Robert Sheets, Amanda Sheets and Laura Sheets; several nieces and nephews.

Margareta Shepherd
West Jefferson
September 1, 1936 - December 15, 2005
Margareta Shepherd, age 69, of W. Jefferson, NC, died Thursday, December 15, 2005 at her home.
Mrs. Shepherd was born in Bitburg, Germany on September 1, 1936 to the late Christoph and Magdalena Boettel. In 1971, she moved to Ashe County with her late husband, Cecil G. Shepherd. She was a devoted member of St. Francis Assisi Catholic Church, and committed employee of the Cutter’s Edge Beauty Salon. Mrs. Shepherd will be remembered by many citizens of Ashe County as “the little German girl.” She was happiest when she was making something. She knitted and crocheted many beautiful sweaters and scarves. She also made lovely cakes, wine and jellies. For many years, she did the flower arrangements for her church with flowers from her garden.
Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to American Leprosy Missions, 1 ALM Way, Greenville, SC 29601, a charity close to her heart that provides care to children throughout the developing world.
Funeral services were held at 9:50 a.m., Monday, December 19 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church located in Jefferson. A short visitation was held from 9:30 – 9:50 prior to the service. The family received friends from 6 – 8 p.m., Sunday, December 18 at Badger Funeral Home.
Mrs. Shepherd is survived by sons, Michael Shepherd and wife, Paula, of Ellicott City, MD and Jim Shepherd of West Jefferson, NC; sisters, Marlies Boettel of Luxembourg and Anni Peters of Germany; brother, Hans Boettel of Germany; sister-in-law, Pauline Jones of Stokesdale, NC; brother-in-law, Dale Shepherd of West Jefferson, NC; grandchildren, Christopher and Lauren Shepherd; seven nephews and six nieces.

Retha Mae Osborne Baldwin

Retha Mae Osborne Baldwin, age 85 of West Jefferson, NC, died Friday, December 23, 2005 at Ashe Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Baldwin was born in Ashe County, NC on June 3, 1920 to the late James and Bonnie Eldreth Osborne. She was preceded in death by her husband; Clarence Baldwin, Son; Chad Baldwin, and daughter; Mary Farmer.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 27, 2005 at 1 p.m. at the Badger Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Lloyd Day and Rev. David Lyalls will officiate. Burial will follow in the Henson cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday, December 27, 2005 from 12 – 1 p.m. at Badger Funeral Home.
Mrs. Baldwin is survived by two sons, Herbert Baldwin of Warrensville, NC and Dean Baldwin of West Jefferson, NC; one daughter, Margaret Faircloth of West Jefferson, NC;
12 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Inis Iona Campbell

August 28, 1910 - December 18, 2005
Inis Iona Campbell age 95 of Peach Bottom, Pa., formerly of Ashe County, NC, died Sunday, December 18, 2005 at her residence.
Mrs. Campbell was born in Ashe County, NC on August 28, 1910 to the late James and Evelyn Johnson Neaves. She was preceded in death by her husband; Bartie John Campbell; sons, Earl and Edward Campbell and grandson, Richard Campbell.
Funeral services were held Thursday, December 22, 2005 at 11 a.m. at the Badger Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Junior Miller officiated. Burial followed in the Howell Hill cemetery.
Mrs. Campbell is survived by son, Cecil Campbell of Peach Bottom, Pa.; one daughter, Gladys Vera Dundore of Akron, Pa.; sisters, Virginia Barker of Jefferson, NC, Kathleen Blevins of Lansing, NC, Helen Richardson of Crumpler, NC; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; nine great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Warren Harvey Johnson, age 80 of West Jefferson, died Friday, December 16, 2005 at his home.
Mr. Johnson was born September 7, 1925 in Passaic County, New Jersey to the late Daniel and Hazel Banker Johnson.
Mr. Johnson was laid to rest Tuesday, December 20 at Salisbury National cemetery.
Mr. Johnson is survived by his wife, Dorothy Johnson.

Thomas Matthew Long

October 18, 1921 - December 22, 2005
Mr. Thomas Matthew Long, better known as “Tom”, age 84, of West Jefferson, the Smethport community, died Thursday morning, December 22, 2005 at Ashe Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, December 27, 2005 at 12:00 pm at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Rodney Frye, Rev. Ralph Smith and Rev. Glenn Woodie officiating. Burial will follow in the Ebenezer cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 11-12 on Tuesday, one hour prior to the funeral service.
Mr. Long was born in Ashe County on October 18, 1921 to the late George E. Long and the late Flora Goodman Long. He was a truck driver. He was a member of Smethport United Methodist Church and he attended Temple Baptist Church.
He is survived by three brothers, Joe Long, of Cary, NC, W.G. Long, of Glendale Springs and Rufus Long, of Falls Church, Virginia; three sisters, Marjorie Sanford, of New York, Ruth Stone, of Silver Springs, Maryland and Pearl Lyall, of Darlington, Maryland; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Robert Glenn Shaw, age 75 of West Jefferson, NC, died Monday, December 19, 2005 at his home. Mr. Shaw was born November 13, 1930 in Ashe County to the late Joseph Edward and Edna Dale Dishman Shaw. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Blanche Virginia Combs Shaw and two daughters; Darlene and Dee Dee Shaw.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Thursday, December 22, 2005 at the Badger Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in the Poe cemetery. The family received friends from 6 - 9 p.m. Wednesday, December 21 at Badger Funeral Home.
Mr. Shaw is survived bysix sons, Dean Shaw of Lansing, NC, John Shaw of West Jefferson, NC, Billy Shaw of Bessher, AL, Danny Shaw of Whitetop, VA, Tommy Shaw of Todd, NC and Terry Shaw of Wilkesboro, NC; five daughters, Jeanette Dollar, Peggy Perry, Retha Woods all of West Jefferson, NC, Giona Treadway of Crumpler, NC and Ina Greer of Todd, NC; one brother, Willard Shaw of West Jefferson, NC; two sisters, Linda Stike of Warrensville, NC and Dorothy Winebarger of Boone, NC; 24 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Conley Leroy Worley
Crumpler
November 18, 1912 - November 26, 2005
Conley Leroy Worley, 93, of 5470 Old Highway 16, went to be with his Lord Jesus Christ on Saturday, November 26, 2005, after an extended illness. He was born in Todd and was the son of the late James Nero Worley and Mary Jane Grogan Worley. He graduated from West Jefferson High School and after graduation began his career in the lumber business. After many years in this business, he then became an employee of Thomasville Furniture Industries in West Jefferson where he worked for seven years before his retirement in 1976. During his retirement years, Conley became widely known for his clock repair and his interest in auctions and wholesale events.
Taking precedence over all else was his faith in the commitment to his Lord and to others in faithful service through his leadership in the Beaver Creek Christian Church. Conley served as a charter member of this church and served in the capacities of elder, choir director, church clerk, and treasurer. His fervent desire was to fulfill his calling and commitment to spreading the gospel in his daily life. Over the past three years, his body physically weakened yet his faith remained steadfast. The legacy he left behind for all who knew him was an exemplified life of love for and trust in his Lord.
He is survived by his wife, Trula Lewis Worley; two sons, Jim and wife, Karen, of North Wilkesboro and Ronnie and wife, Lillian, of West Jefferson; three daughters, Sonya Willard of Winston-Salem, Barbara Lawrence and husband, Ronnie, of West Jefferson, Melba Johnson and husband, Steve, of Shallotte, NC; and one stepson, David Barlow, of Creston. He is also survived by ten grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren, as well as a host of cherished relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Monday, November 28 at the Beaver Creek Christian Church with the Rev. Creighton Beatty and Rev. Wayne Williamson officiating. Burial followed in the Ashelawn Memorial Gardens. Badger’s Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Serving as pallbearers were Barry Goodman, David Grubb, Michael Grubb, Glenn Grubb, Robert Greer, and Jim Grubb. Honorary pallbearers included Henry Dollar, Russell Lyalls, Gary Ambrister, and J.C. Winebarger.
The family wishes to thank all who have prayed, called, visited, sent cards, food, and flowers and showed love and concern in so many ways during this loved one’s illness and death. Special thanks to the following groups, agencies, individuals or businesses: Restore Group, Senior Companion Program, Ashe Services for Aging, Lyncare, Home Health staff, Hospice, Ashe Memorial Hospital staff, Emergency Department of Ashe Memorial Hospital, Dr. Zawodniak, Dr. Chan Badger, Dr. Tammy Thore, Dr. Kevin Kurtz, Jefferson Florist, Badger’s Funeral Home, Frank Hall, Creighton Beatty, Wayne Williamson, West Jefferson and Jefferson Police Departments, Ashe County Sheriff’s Department, and Lansing Fire Department. The family would also like to express deep appreciation to the members of the Beaver Creek Christian Church for providing such a delicious family meal after the funeral services.

Ressie Marie Wyatt Blevins, age 73 of Lansing, N.C., died Monday, January 2, 2006 at the Ashe Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Blevins was born in Ashe County, N.C. on July 1, 1932 to the late Edwin and Rosa Hart Wyatt. She was preceded in death by her husband, Eli Blevins. She was a member of the Helton Valley Baptist Church in Whitetop, Va.
Funeral services were held Friday, January 6, 2006 at 2 p.m. at Helton Valley Baptist Church. Rev. Rex Hall, Rev. Dan Hess, and Rev. David Lyalls officiated. Burial followed in the Whitetop Baptist Church cemetery. The family received friends Thursday, January 5, 2006 from 6 - 8 p.m. at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel.
Mrs. Blevins is survived by sons, Wayne Weaver and, wife Wanda, of Lansing, N.C., Frank Blevins and wife, Mary, of Lansing, N.C., Dean Blevins and wife, Lisa, of Whitetop, Va.; daughters, Mary Blevins of Lansing, N.C., Shelby Weaver and husband, Dennis, of Lansing, NC; brothers, Ottis Wyatt and wife, Georgia, of Glade Springs, Va., Ambrose Wyatt of Glade Springs, Va., Nelson Wyatt of Lansing, N.C., James Wyatt and wife, Frances, of Marion, Va.; sister, Juanita Wargo of Bristol, Tenn.; a special friend, Julie Miller; 13 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Viola Pearl Worley Brown, age 84 of Boone, N.C., died Wednesday, January 4, 2005 at the Blowing Rock Hospital. Mrs. Brown was born March 21, 1921 in Wilkes County to the late Troy and Dora Benge Worley.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Saturday, January 7, 2006 at the Badger Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Michael Greene and Rev. Waitsel Beard officiated. Burial followed in the Laurel Knob cemetery. The family received friends from 10 – 11 a.m. prior to the funeral service.
Mrs. Brown is survived by one son, Carl Brown of Lenoir, N.C.; two daughters, Kathy Jones of Boone, N.C. and Kay Houck of Lenoir, N.C.; one sister, Ruby Reynolds of Bristol, Va.; seven grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Nina Houck Gentry

Nina Houck Gentry, age 89 of Lexington, N.C., formerly of West Jefferson, died Tuesday, January 3, 2006, after several years of declining health.
The funeral service was conducted at 11 a.m., Saturday, January 7 at Bethany United Methodist Church, where she was a member. The family received friends one hour prior to the service at the church and other times at the home of a daughter, Diane Goss. Burial followed in Bethany United Methodist Church cemetery in West Jefferson, N.C.
Mrs. Gentry was born August 18, 1916 to Arthur Jacob and Myrtle Edwards Houck. She was a resident of Ashe County before moving to Lexington, N.C. in 1991. She was a homemaker. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, former state Senator Todd H. Gentry, six brothers and three sisters.
She is survived by two daughters, Sara “Sammie” Hodges and her husband, John Hodges III, of Lexington, N.C., Diane G. Goss of West Jefferson and one son, Tony H. Gentry of Portland, Ore.; nine grandchildren, John Hodges IV and Randall Goss of West Jefferson, Elizabeth Kepley of Lexington, Carmen and Candace Goss of Winston-Salem, Caroline Miller and Robert Goss of Greenville, S.C., Tony Gentry of Richmond, Va., and Todd Gentry II of Portland, Ore.; seven great-grandchildren and a sister, Lillis Gentry of West Jefferson.
Badger Funeral Home of West Jefferson served the family.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Western Carolina Chapter, 3800 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, N.C. 28215-3220 which serves 49 counties including Ashe, Davidson, and Forsyth counties or to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Pearl Poe Greer

January 21, 1913 - January 5, 2006
Mrs. Pearl Poe Greer, age 92, of Warrensville, died Thursday night, January 5, 2006 at her residence.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, January 8, 2006 at 2 p.m. at Full Gospel Church of the Living God with Rev. Fred Greer, Rev. Spencer Roark and Rev. Jim Greer officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
The family received friends from 12 - 2 p.m. on Sunday, prior to the funeral service.
Mrs. Greer was born in Ashe County on Tuesday, January 21, 1913 to the late William Poe and the late Zepha Shepherd Poe. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, David Paul Greer.
She is survived by two sons, Charles E. Greer, of Wilmington, Delaware and William Fred Greer, of Warrensville; a daughter, Lucy Hall, of Independence, Virginia; two half-sisters, Ina Mae Brooks, of West Jefferson and Jean Roten, of Warrensville; ten grandchildren; twenty-one great-grandchildren; eight great, great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews also survive.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to: Hospice of Ashe, Po Box 421, Jefferson, NC 28640.

Kenneth Gerald Hertel, age 57 of West Jefferson, N.C., died Monday, January 2, 2006 at the Ashe Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Hertel was born in Springfield, Illinois on August 26, 1948 to Kenneth Gerald Hertel, Sr. and June Clark Hertel. He was preceded in death by his brother, John Clark.
A memorial service was held Thursday, January 5, 2006 at 3 p.m. at the Badger Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Herb Parunak officiated. The family received friends Thursday, January 5, 2006 from 2 - 3 p.m. at Badger Funeral Home. Burial will be held in the Cambridge cemetery in Cambridge, Ohio.
Mr. Hertel is survived bywife, Erika Lorenz Hertel; mother, June Clark Hertel; son, Kenneth Derik Hertel and wife, Carrie, of Columbus, Ohio; step-sons, Christopher Martin Wilcox and wife, Rachel, of Huntersville, N.C., Michael Anthony Wilcox and wife, Serena, of Millers Creek, N.C.; sister, Nancy Tucker and husband, Dennis, of Springfield, Illinois; aunt, Jean Boehmer and husband ,John, of Springfield, Illinois; one niece and one nephew.
