John Thomas Eastridge, age 90, of Warrensville, N.C., died Friday, August 25, 2006 at Ashe Memorial Hospital. Mr. Eastridge was born March 20, 1916 in Ashe County to the late Carl and Emma Banner Eastridge. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Carl, Jr., Theodore, Charles Lynnburg, and Melville Eastridge; two sisters, Ann Dinolfo and Mary Eastridge; one half sister, Wanda Sue Eastridge. Mr. Eastridge was a faithful member of the Clifton Methodist Church in Warrensville. John loved farming, especially working with cattle. He also loved doing carpentry work.
Funeral services were held Monday, August 28, 2006 at 2 p.m. at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel. Rev. Jeff Nave and Rev. Greg Plot officiated. Burial followed in the Ashelawn Memorial Gardens with military rites. Flowers were appreciated or memorials may be made to Clifton Methodist Church, P.O. Box 187, Warrensville, NC 28693.
Mr. Eastridge is survived by his wife, Flossie Hoosier Eastridge; two sons, Jerry Eastridge of Warrensville, Richard Eastridge of Warrensville; one brother, Joseph Eastridge of Warrensville; four half brothers, Lonnie Eastridge of Warrensville, Doug Eastridge of Warrensville, Edward Eastridge of Michigan, Raymond Lewis of Elizabethton, Tenn.; four half sisters, Jane Meadows of Georgia, Bonnie Jones of Michigan, Thelma Thompson of Stoneville, N.C., Irene Kantkanen of Florida; one step grandchild; one step great-grandchild also survive.

Marsha Bare Haislip age 54 of Charlotte, N.C., formerly of Ashe County, N.C., died Thursday, August 24, 2006 at Northeast Medical Center in Concord, N.C.
Mrs. Haislip was born in North Wilkesboro, N.C on October 21, 1951 to Walter W. and Alice Nell Miller Bare. She graduated from Glade Valley Boarding School in Alleghany County, N.C. and attended college at University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She graduated from the University of Texas at Dallas with a BA Degree in English. Mrs. Haislip retired as a mortgage banker where she managed mortgage operations. She was a fierce advocate for the environment and served as a member of the National Arbor Day Foundation. She believed with all her heart that our environment should be nurtured and preserved for the next generation. She loved art, crafts and was an avid painter.
Funeral services were held Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 3 p.m. at the Badger Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Lloyd Day officiated. The family received friends Sunday, August 27, 2006 from 2 - 3 p.m. at Badger Funeral Home. A private burial will be held at Ebenezer cemetery. Mrs. Haislip is survived by husband, Tom Haislip; sons, John Earle Haislip of Orlando, Fla., Michael Paul Haislip of Kissimme, Fla.; daughter, Melissa Haislip Prindle of Lake Mary, Fla.; mother, Nell Miller Bare of Winston Salem, N.C.; grandchildren, Tommy Prindle, Alec Haislip, and Megan Haislip.

Mr. Harvey Harrison Hodgson, age 82, of West Jefferson, died Thursday, August 24, 2006 at his residence.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 2 p.m. at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Joey McClure officiating. Burial followed in the Kemp-Lewis cemetery.
The family received friends from 12:30 - 2 p.m. on Sunday, August 27, 2006 at Boone Family Funeral Home.
Mr. Hodgson was born in Ashe County on Thursday, July 10, 1924 to the late McKinley and Myrtle Sheets Hodgson. He was an agricultural farmer.
He is survived by his wife, Danish Jones Hodgson; a step-daughter, Sue Brooks, of West Jefferson; two brothers, Arvil Hodgson, of Pennsylvania and Joe Hodgson, of North Carolina; a sister, Ella Mae Roten, of Laurens, S.C.; a granddaughter, Tanya Dawn Mayberry and husband, David; a great-granddaughter, Lilliana Mayberry; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Joseph Allen McGuire
Street, Md.
Died August 19, 2006
Joseph Allen McGuire, age 73, of Street, Md., died on August 19, 2006 at the Upper Chesapeake Medical Center. Born in Toliver, N.C., he was the son of the late Isam Garfield and Danford Diane Jones McGuire. He served in the U.S. Navy, and worked 32 years before going on medical disability from the Columbia Gas Corp. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and golfing. He was a member of the Bel Forest Baptist Church in Bel Air, Md.
Mr. McGuire is survived by his wife of 48 years, Betty Jean Brewer McGuire of Street, Md.; one daughter, Deanna Amos and her husband, Kevin of Forest Hill, Md.; one brother, Glenn McGuire of Bel Air, Md.; two sisters, Brenda McDowell of Delta, Pa. and Lillian Greer of Todd, N.C.; and two grandchildren, Stephanie Amos and Corey Amos, both of Forest Hill, Md..
In addition to his parents, Mr. McGuire was predeceased by one son, Dwayne Allen McGuire; one brother, Charles McGuire; and three sisters, Juanita McGuire, Rose Edna Goodman and Colleen Johnson.
Friends were received at Bel Forest Baptist Church on Thursday, August 24, 2006 from 2 - 4 p.m. and from 6 - 8 p.m. Services were held at the Bel Forest Baptist Church on Friday, August 25, 2006 at 11 a.m. with Rev. H. William Rivers officiating. Interment was in Bel Air Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers were Kevin Amos, Corey Amos, Billy Desell, Raymond Greer, Glenn Goodman, Mike McDowell, Gary McGuire, Mark Williston, and Mark Williston, Jr.

Clara P. Pennington

Clara Poe Pennington, age 88, of Elkton, Md., formerly of West Chester, Pa., died Wednesday, August 23, 2006.
Born on August 7, 1918, in Jefferson, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Ellis and Ella Bare Poe. Mrs. Pennington had been a mushroom cannery supervisor in the West Chester area. She loved quilting, gardening, outdoor yard work, and crocheting.
Survivors include her children and their spouses, Wanda and Norman Marquess of Elkton, Md., Lorma and David Becker of Glenmoore, Pa., John and Vicki Pennington of North East, Md., James Pennington of Exton, Pa., Mary Jane and Joe Vita of Bristol, Conn., Richard Pennington of West Chester, Pa. and Barbara Linder and fiancé, Howard Patterson of Coatesville, Pa.; step children and their spouses, Nola and Leon Moore of Clarksville, Tenn., Marie Barnes of Newark, Del., Doris and Francis Wright of Bear, Del. and Robert and Joan Pennington of Kaolin, Pa.; siblings, Virginia Canter of Florida, Georgie Meadows of Winston-Salem, N.C., Mayse Lawing of Rutherford, N.C., Anna Bowen of Baltimore, Md. and Carl Poe of Glendale Springs, N.C.; 31 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Pennington was preceded in death by her husband, John Pennington and daughter-in-law, Catherine Linder Pennington of West Chester, Pa.
Funeral services were held Saturday, August 26, 2006, at Hicks Home for Funerals, 103 W. Stockton St., Elkton, MD 21921. Interment followed in Elkton cemetery in Elkton, Md.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Ladies Auxiliary of Singerly Fire Company in care of the funeral home.

Joyce Ann Parker Tucker

Mrs. Joyce Ann Parker Tucker, age 66, of Concord, formerly of Ashe County, died Tuesday, August 22, 2006 at her home.
Mrs. Tucker was born in Ashe County on Tuesday, November 28, 1939 to the late Glenn Parker and the late Norma Welborn Parker. Mrs. Tucker was a homemaker and was very involved in her community. She was past president of the Rocky Ridge United Methodist Women’s Group, a member of the Rocky Ridge Circle Number 3, Cabarrus Home Extension Group and she was a volunteer for the Meals on Wheels program.
A memorial services wasbe held on Friday, August 25, 2006 at 7 p.m. at Rocky Ridge United Methodist Church in Concord with Rev. Charles Guy officiating. Graveside services were held on Saturday, August 26, 2006 at 3 p.m. at Austin-Tucker cemetery in Laurel Springs, N.C.
The family received friends from 6 - 7 p.m. on Friday, August 25, 2006 one hour prior to the memorial service in the church fellowship hall.
Mrs. Tucker is survived by her husband, Jim Roe Tucker; two sons, Ethan Tucker and wife, Doris, of Concord and Edwin Tucker of Concord; one sister, Nancy Edwards of West Jefferson; two grandchildren, Frances Tucker, Aaron Tucker; several nieces and nephews also survive.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to: Rocky Ridge United Methodist Church Building Fund, 1428 Old Charlotte Road, Concord, NC 28027.

Terry Allen Wyatt

Mr. Terry Allen Wyatt, age 38, of Portland, Oregon, formerly of Ashe County, died in Portland, Oregon.
Graveside services were held on Saturday, August 26, 2006 at 11 a.m. at Wyatt cemetery in Lansing with Rev. Spencer Roark officiating.
Mr. Wyatt was born on May 31, 1968 to the late Elmer Wyatt and to Catherine Wyatt Farmer.
He was also preceded in death by his grandparents, Mae and Conley Wyatt and his grandmother, Lois Farmer Gilley.
He is survived by a daughter, Katie Wyatt, of Portland, Oregon; his mother, Catherine Wyatt Farmer; three brothers, Elmer Wyatt, Jr. and Michael Wyatt, both of Portland, Oregon and Justin Timpy, of Washington, Pa.; his maternal grandparents, James and Janie Farmer, of Lansing; a step daughter, Jewell Doty, of Portland, Oregon; several aunts and uncles also survive.

Virginia T. Addington

Mrs. Virginia T. Addington, 84, of West Jefferson, N.C. died Sunday, October 15, 2006 at her home following a long illness.
Mrs. Addington was born January 23, 1922 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana to Francis M. and Reby S. Tessier. She received her early education in the schools of Macon County, North Carolina after high school she earned an associate degree at Brevard College and a BS degree in nursing from Vanderbilt University. She was married on February 23, 1943 to A.B. Addington.
She began her nursing career as a public health nurse in Forsyth County. She and her family moved to Ashe County in 1952 and she worked briefly at Ashe Memorial Hospital before returning to public health nursing with the Ashe County Health Department. She remained in public health until her retirement in 1983 as nursing supervisor with the Appalachian District Health Department.
Mrs. Addington was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church for over 50 years. She was a Sunday School teacher, was active in the United Methodist Women and served on several church committees. She was also an active volunteer with the Sharing Center, the Ashe Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and Hospice of Ashe County.
Mrs. Addington was preceded in death by her husband, A.B. Addington and her son, Albert. She is survived by her children, Rebecca A (Gervase) Hitch, Mary A (Darnell) Owen and John M (Carol) Addington and her daughter-in-law, Nancy G. Addington.
She is also survived by seven grandchildren, James A Franklin, Michael W. (Hayley) Franklin, Jennifer T Addington, Jessica A (Kelly) Hargesheimier, Tavia B. Addington, Ory A. Owen and Evan S. Owen and three great- grandchildren, Kasey W. Franklin, Taylor R. Franklin and Ash D. Hargesheimer; two brothers and a sister.
The funeral service for Mrs. Addington will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, October 18, 2006 at Bethany United Methodist Church with Rev. Lewis Poag. The body will lie in state at the church for one hour prior to the service. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall immediately following the service.
Mrs. Addington will be laid to rest in Franklin, N.C. on Thursday, October 19, 2006 at a private graveside ceremony.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers that memorial be made to Ashe Service for Aging, PO Box 9, West Jefferson, NC 28694.

William Harold Bare, age 78 of Jefferson, N.C., died Wednesday, October 11, 2006 at his home. Mr. Bare was born April 16, 1928 in Ashe County to the late Carmie and Mamie Miller Bare.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Saturday, October 14, 2006 at the Badger Funeral Home Chapel. Elder Anion Cole officiated. Burial followed in the Roans Creek Primitive Baptist Church cemetery. The family received friends from 1 - 2 p.m. prior to the funeral service.
Mr. Bare is survived by his wife, Mary Alice Bare; three sons, William Ronald Bare of Granite Falls, N.C., Duane Harold Bare of Crumpler, N.C. and Steve Bare of Jefferson, N.C.; three daughters, Betty McGinn of Maryland, Mary McCraw of West Jefferson and Ann Severt of Jefferson, N.C.; two brothers, Donald Bare of Winston Salem, N.C. and Gilbert Bare of Jefferson, N.C.; two sisters, Betty Miller of West Jefferson, N.C. and Lucy Bugunavitcvh of Colorado; 14 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

Arthur Eugene “Gene” Graybeal

Arthur Eugene “Gene” Graybeal, age 88, of Jefferson, N.C., died Friday, October 13, 2006 at his residence. Mr. Graybeal was born in Ashe County, N.C. on May 16, 1918 to the late Arthur and Myrtle Merser Graybeal. He owned and operated Graybeal’s Produce for many years in the Smethport Community.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m., Sunday, October 15, 2006 at the Badger Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Lloyd Day and Rev. Jim Greer officiated. Burial followed in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens. The family received friends from 2 – 3 p.m. prior to the service.
Mr. Graybeal is survived by wife, Ortha Graybeal; son, John Graybeal of Creston, N.C.; daughter, Ruby Blevins of Crumpler, N.C.; three sisters, Pearl Graybeal of Lancaster, Pa., Edna Milam of Ohio and Kate Rice of S.C.; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.

Mr. Ottis Conley Graybeal, age 88, of Jefferson, died Wednesday morning, October 11, 2006 at Margate Health & Rehab Center.
Funeral services were held on Friday, October 13, 2006 at 8 p.m. at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Mark Weist officiating. Graveside services were held on Saturday, October 14, 2006 at 10 a.m. at Brown cemetery in the Rich Hill Community.
The family received friends from 6 - 8 p.m. on Friday, two hours prior to the funeral service.
Mr. Graybeal was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico on Tuesday, March 12, 1918 to the late Conley and Laura Graybeal. He was a mushroom farmer.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret Lee Ashley Graybeal; two sons, Elbert Graybeal, of West Jefferson and Morris Graybeal, of Milledgeville, Ga.; a daughter, Alice Adams, of Ontario, Canada; a brother, James Delmer Graybeal, of Jefferson; a sister, Irene Edwards, of Jefferson; several grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews also survive.

Lenna Kay Neaves Hamby, age 63 of Crumpler, N.C., passed away at her home Monday, October 9, 2006, after a short battle with cancer. She was a loving sister, aunt and friend who will be greatly missed.
She was born July 3, 1943 in Ashe County to Roscoe and Winnie Phipps Neaves. In addition to her parents she was also preceded in death by a sister, Grace Neaves Goodman and a brother, Wayne Neaves. She was a lifelong member of Greene’s Chapel Baptist Church in Lansing, NC.
Graveside services were held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, October 11, 2006 at the Howell Hill cemetery in Lansing, NC. Mrs. Hamby is survived by three sisters, Karen Campbell of West Jefferson, N.C., Sharon Thompson of Jefferson, N.C. and Juanita Osborne of Creston, N.C.; four brothers. Onis Neaves of West Jefferson, N.C., Lanny Neaves of Franklinville, N.C., Dale Neaves of Glendale Springs, N.C. and Claude Neaves of Jefferson, N.C.; aunt, Sue Lee Phipps Weaver of Grassy Creek, N.C.; special nephews, Bruce Goodman of Walkertown, N.C., Charles Goodman of London, England and David Goodman of Durham, N.C.; special nieces, Jennifer Thompson Dollar of Lansing, N.C. and Heather Neaves Casey of Boone, N.C.; several nieces; nephews; extended family and friends.

Julius Darrell Stewart, better know as Snake, age 70 of Creston, N.C., died Monday, October 9, 2006 at the Mtn. City Care Center. Mr. Stewart was born July 30, 1936 in Ashe County to the late Samuel and Emma May Stewart. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by brothers, Robert Edward and Delmer Stewart; sisters, May Thomas and Ruby Stewart. Mr. Stewart was a farmer all his life.
Graveside services were held at 11 a.m., Thursday, October 12 at the Potter cemetery in Creston, N.C. Rev. Tommy Stevens and Rev. Carl Witherspoon officiated. The family received friends from 6 - 8 p.m., Wednesday, October 11 at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel.
Mr. Stewart is survived by two sisters, Rosa Maines of Trade, Tenn. and Jenetta Potter of Granite Falls, N.C.; one brother, Elmer Stewart of Creston, N.C.; several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Wallace Kenneth Wilcox, age 72, of College Street, Wilkesboro died Thursday, October 12, 2006 at Wilkes Regional Medical Center.
Funeral services were held Sunday, October 15, at 2 p.m. at Reins-Sturdivant Chapel with Rev. Richard Blevins and Rev. Jerry Smith officiating. Burial followed in Scenic Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Wilcox was born in Watauga County, July 30, 1934, to George Franklin and Grace Octavia Greene Wilcox. He was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church. Mr. Wilcox served in the US Army during the Korean War.
Mr. Wilcox is survived by his wife, Reba Greer Wilcox of the home; three daughters, Sandy Miller and husband, Fred of Millers Creek, Kathy Combs and husband, Dwight Treeka Myers and husband, Tim both of North Wilkesboro; one sister, Elsie Hodgson and husband, Bernard of Meat Camp; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.
The family received friends at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home in North Wilkesboro from 6 – 8 p.m. Saturday night.

William Howard Van Dyke, Sr. age 77, of Grassy Creek, N.C., died Sunday, October 15, 2006 at his residence.
Mr. Van Dyke was born in Washington County, Va. on November 21, 1928 to the late Victor John and Minnie Woodards Van Dyke. He was preceded in death by his wife; Anne Zaccarellia Van Dyke; daughter, Lorraine Shikadeh; and brother, Lawrence Van Dyke.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, October 18, 2006 at 11 a.m. at the Badger Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Jim Greer officiated. Burial followed in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens. The family received friends Tuesday, October 17, 2006 from 7 – 9 p.m. at Badger Funeral Home.
Mr. Van Dyke is survived by sons, Edward L. Van Dyke, William R. Van Dyke both of Pennsylvania, William H. Mr. Edward Wayne Stidhams, age 53, of West Jefferson, died Friday, October 20, 2006 at his residence.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, October 21, 2006 at 8 p.m. at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. J.D. Walton and Rev. Jim Greer officiating. Graveside services were held on Sunday, October 22, 2006, 2 p.m. at Johnson-Denny cemetery.
The family received friends from 5 - 8 p.m. on Saturday, three hours prior the funeral service.
Mr. Stidhams was born in Ashe County on Sunday, August 2, 1953 to the late Edward “Ed” Stidhams and Effie Wiles Stidhams. He was a member of Rich Hill Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Sharon Rose Stidhams; a step-son, Nathan Jones, of the home; two sons, Derek Stidhams and Joshua Stidhams, of Mountain City, Tenn.; his mother, Effie Wiles Stidhams, of Lansing; two brothers, Larry Stidhams, of Roan Mountain, Tenn. and David Stidhams, of West Jefferson; two sisters, Carol Stidhams Denny, of Warrensville and Debbie Stidhams Miller, of Whitetop, Va.; two aunts; one uncle; seven nieces and nephews; four great nieces; great host of friends also survive.
Flowers were accepted or memorials may be made to: Hospice of Ashe, PO Box 421, Jefferson, NC 28640.
