Larry Rex Taylor
West Jefferson
September 11, 1942
October 20, 2006
On Friday, October 20, 2006 at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem, Larry Rex Taylor, 64, passed away peacefully and went home to be with his Lord.
Mr. Taylor was born on Friday, September 11, 1942 in Forsyth County, N.C. to the late Rex and Ruby Pruitt Taylor. He had one younger sister, Ann, who still resides in Winston-Salem with her son, Christopher. He developed a love for cars and for racing and in his teens could often be found at the Reedy Creek drag strip where those who remember, said he was always a winner.
Funeral services were held on Monday, October 23, 2006 at 11 a.m. at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Larry Shepherd and Rev. David Grinnell officiating. Burial followed in the Ashelawn Memorial Garden Mausoleum of Prayer.
The family received friends from 6 – 9 p.m. on Sunday, October 22, 2006 at Boone Family Funeral Home.
He joined his father in the family business at Tri-State Burley Warehouse in West Jefferson during the tobacco market season and eventually settled in Ashe County and had a successful used car business in the months when the tobacco market was closed—successful because of Mr. Taylor’s integrity and desire to make sure that his customers were happy with the vehicles they purchased. More often than not, his customers became his friends.
Mr. Taylor had two daughters whom he loved unconditionally. The oldest, Lisa Taylor, now resides in Winston-Salem and is employed as a technical writer, authoring software manuals for an architectural and engineering firm. The youngest, Teresa Hughes, lives in Jefferson with her husband, Craig, and their two-year-old daughter, Callie, the apple of her “Pop’s” eye. Teresa is a language arts and social studies teacher at Ashe County Middle School.
Mr. Taylor was married to Patricia Eldreth Taylor on October 26, 1992 and the two shared a rare bond. They attended Long Branch Baptist Church. Mrs. Taylor was by his side each and every day, during his recent-five-month stay in ICU at Forsyth Medical Center. Nurses commented that they had never met a family quite like the Taylors—so loving and supportive of each other.
His mother-in-law, Blanche Eldreth of Lansing, loved him like her own son and he adored her in return. Three aunts and one uncle also survive, as well as numerous friends, fishing and golfing buddies and one special friend, Rick Copus, who called Mr. Taylor his second dad. His other special friend, Lee Flanagan was also more like family than friend. He was Larry’s right hand and the family will never be able to thank him enough for caring for Mr. Taylor’s business, LT Motors, in the recent months.
We have lost a husband, a Daddy and a true friend who taught us that Earthly things are trivial and that we must trust our faith and store up our treasures in Heaven. If you spent very much time with Larry, you knew the source of his obvious joy and peace was his relationship with God. He loved to talk about the Bible and was honored to be a Sunday School teacher.
The family would like to especially thank the following people at Forsyth Medical Center: Dr. David Duncan, Dr. Jason Thomason, CVSU Nurses, CCU Unit 1 Nurses, Karen, Melissa, Cindy, Martha, Angel and Theresa.
Memorials may be made to the Gideon’s International, PO Box 993, West Jefferson, NC 28694; Long Branch Baptist Church Building Fund, C/O Ann Eldreth, 1010 E. Long Branch Road, Lansing, NC 28643; or Ebenezer Gardens Christian Children’s Home, PO Box 2777, North Wilkesboro, NC 28659.
You may give the family your condolences at the website www.boonefuneralhome.com.
