Willard Ray Carico, 74, was remembered at funeral services held Aug. 8 at Badger Funeral Home Chapel in West Jefferson. Rev. Reeves Jones, Rev. Dean Shepherd and Rev. J.D. Walton officiated. Burial followed in the Double Springs cemetery in Laurel Springs.

Mr. Carico was born in Ashe County to Robert and Eller Phillips Carico. He was married to the late Ruth Johnson Carico.

He is survived by a son, Danny Carico, Sparta; one daughter, Sara Blevins, Sparta; one sister, Pauline May Myers, North Wilkesboro; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Badger Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

William Burl Baker Sr.
Crumpler
June 9, 1924
Aug. 6, 2000
William Burl Baker Sr., 76, was remembered at funeral services held Aug. 10 at Badger Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Reeves Jones officiated. Burial followed in the Healing Springs Church cemetery with military honors.

Mr. Baker was born in Ashe County to Haynes and Mary Taylor Baker.

He is survived by one son, William Burl Baker Jr., Crumpler; five brothers, Ray, Jack and R.C. Baker, Fayetteville, Haynes Baker Jr., Crumpler, and Jim Baker, West Jefferson; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Badger Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

George F. Perkins
Pine Ridge Loop, N.C.
Died: Aug. 9, 2000

George F. Perkins, 84, was remembered at memorial services held July 13 at Banner Elk Presbyterian Church. Revs. Tom Phillips and Ernie DuRoss officiated.

Mr. Perkins was a native of Warrensville and the son of the late Timothy E. and Maude Alpha Cox Perkins.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia Brown Perkins; one son, Timothy Perkins and his wife, Leona, Gypsum, Colo.; one daughter, Marilyn Barreto and husband, Peter, Burlington, Wis.; one sister, Dorothy Perkins, West Jefferson; and four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Avery County Hospice, PO Box 1357, Newland, NC 28657.

Eugene Viers, 77, was remembered at funeral services held Aug. 12 at Badger Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Richard Peters and Rev. David Greer officiated. Burial followed in the Roans Creek cemetery with military honors.

Mr. Viers was born in Alleghany County to Freddie Edward and Virgie McGrady Viers.

He is survived by two daughters, Audrey Eller and Patricia Calhoun, both of Laurel Springs; three brothers, Junior, Ray and J.E. Viers, Laurel Springs; three sisters, Grace Sheets, Kannapolis, Nadine Oliver, Alleghany County, and Fay Church, Laurel Springs; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to the Roans Creek cemetery Fund, c/o Bessie Hall, 5603 Hwy. 88 East, Jefferson, NC 28640.

Lona Rae Hamm

Lona Rae Osborne Hamm, 85, was remembered at funeral services held July 9 at Big Springs Baptist Church. Rev. J.B. Hamm and Rev. Darrell Graybeal officiated. Burial services were held July 10 at the Roten Family cemetery in Creston.

Mrs. Hamm was born in Ashe County to George Osborne and Rhoda Roten Osborne. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Emley Earl Hamm.

She is survived by four sons, Howard Hamm, James Hamm and Joe Hamm, all of Creston, and James Hamm, Ashe Living Center; two daughters, Georgia Sutherland, Mountain City, Tenn., and Lois Sandbirg, Louisiana; a brother, Junior Osborne, Creston; four sisters, Maggie Roten and Faye Barr, both of Creston, Pearl Flanagan, Hickory, and Beryl Berry, Roanoke, Va.; 27 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Boone Family Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Chanie B. Dyer
Bel Air, Md.
Died: July 5, 2000
Chanie B. Dyer was remembered at funeral services held July 8 at Oak Grove Baptist Church. Rev. Harold L. Hubble officiated. Burial followed in Bel Air Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers were Steven Miller, Robert Miller, Jeremy Smith, Sean Smith, Doug Restrick and Chad Restrick.

Mrs. Dyer was born in Toliver and was the daughter of the late George Washington and Jennie Elizabeth (Jones) Miller. She had worked for Glenn L. Martin Company in Middle River as an aircraft assembler. She was retired from Boeing-Vertol Company where she had worked as a service crib controller. She was also a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church since 1944. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Carrie Miller and Chelcie Pugh; and two brothers, Vyrus Miller and Ernest Miller.

She is survived by four nieces, Linda Smith, Arlene Restrick, Norma Jean Spalding and Belly Miller, all of Bel Air, Md.; three nephews, Robert Miller, Columbus, Ohio, Steven Miller, Bel Air, Md., and Lawrence Miller, Creston; and a cousin, Leona Thompson, Bel Air, Md.

Memorials may be made to Oak Grove Baptist Church, 2106 Churchville Road, Bel Air, MD 21015.

Carrie Gentry Greer
West Jefferson
Feb. 13, 1907
Aug. 15, 2000

Carrie Gentry Greer, 93, was remembered at funeral services held at Bethany United Methodist Church on Aug. 17. Rev. Lewis Poag officiated. The family received friends one hour prior to the service. Burial followed in the Bethany United Methodist Church cemetery.

Mrs. Greer was born in Ashe County to Jacob and Leora Trivette Gentry. She was a lifetime charter member of Bethany United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Ray Greer; and one daughter, Willie Lee Holman Goodman.

She is survived by three daughters, Deane Lewis and Betty Jo Hart of West Jefferson, and Gladys Goodman of Charlotte; one son, Kenneth Greer of West Jefferson; one sister Myrtle Houck of Todd; and nine grandchildren, 14 great-grand children and two great-great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be sent to Bethany United Methodist Church, 495 NC Hwy 194 North, West Jefferson, NC 28694.

Billie D. Howell, 59, was remembered at funeral services held Aug. 23 at Community Baptist Church. Rev. Dale Goodwin officiated. Burial followed in Gardens of Faith cemetery.

Mr. Howell was born in Boone to John and Ora Howell. He was a roofer and a veteran of the Army.

He is survived by his wife, Roberta P. Howell, Dundalk, Md.; three sons, Billy Howell, John Howell and Lewis Howell; one daughter, Melissa Howell; one son, Robert Preisendorfer; and five grandchildren.

Duda-Ruck Funeral Home of Dundalk, Md. was in charge of the arrangements.

Ruby Ketron
Kingsport, Tenn.
Died: July 6, 2000

Ruby Eller Ketron, 78, was remembered at memorial services held July 9 at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Kingsport, Tenn.

Mrs. Ketron was a native of Ashe County and had lived in the Kingsport area for 45 years. She was the daughter of the late Lillard and Vinace Eller of Lansing. She taught school in Lansing in the late 1940s after graduating from Emory and Henry College. She was also a teacher with the Sullivan County School System, retiring after 30 years of service. She was of the Jehovah’s Witness faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Karl G. Ketron.

She is survived by one son, Terry A. Ketron, Kingsport, Tenn.; one sister, Ethel Eller Welch, N. Adams, Mass.; one grandchild, Lydia Jonsrud, Coeburn, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

Charles Herman Greer, 93, was remembered at funeral services held Oct. 26 at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Jimmy Williams, Rev. Clyde Campbell and Rev. Steve Church officiated. Burial followed in the Graham-Greer cemetery.

Mr. Greer was born in Watauga County to Frank Greer and Molly Payne Greer. He was a saw mill operator. He was preceded in death by his parents; and five children, Melva Jean Greer, Jay Harold Greer, Virginia D. Reid, Donald C. Greer and Warren G. Greer.

He is survived by his wife, Jesse Hazel Church Greer of the home; four sons, Charles D. Greer and Jerry L. Greer, both of Todd, Dale P. Greer, Baltimore, Md., and Joe B. Greer, Edgewood, Md.; a daughter, Diane G. Roark, Jefferson; and 14 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Neddy “Butch” Barker

Neddy “Butch” Ralph Barker, 53, passed away at North Carolina Baptist Hospital.

Mr. Barker was born in West Jefferson to Ralph and Helen Barker. He served four years in the United States Army and was stationed in Korea.

He is survived by two sisters, Deborah Barker, West Jefferson, and Brenda Tulley, Newark, Del.; three brothers, Larry Barker, Columbia, S.C., John Barker, Johnson City, Tenn. and Eddie Barker, Hendersville; and several nieces and nephews.

Rev. Lloyd Troy Rich

Rev. Lloyd Troy Rich, 65, was remembered at funeral services held Oct. 23 at Confidence Advent Christian Church. Rev. Bobby Brock officiated. Burial followed in Confidence Advent Christian cemetery.

Pallbearers were George Curtis, Clayton Pritchard, Mickey Hendrix, Clell Hartley, Ed Watson and Lowell Greene. Honorary pallbearers were Ralph Nichols, Bobby Gilbert and Marshall Abee.

Mr. Rich was born in Caldwell County to Mabel Philyaw Rich and the late James Rich. He was a member of Confidence Advent Christian Church and pastor of Boomer Advent Christian Church.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Rich of the home; his mother, Mabel Philyaw Rich, Lenoir; two sons, Dale Rich, Lenoir, and Raymond Hamby, High Point; two daughters, Glenda Rich and Deborah Ford, both of Lenoir; three brothers, Vannoy Rich and Jimmy Rich, both of Lenoir, and Coleman Rich, Hudson; two sisters, Hazel Greene, Lenoir, and Ann Hatton, Hudson; and 11 grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren.
