Vada Cleo Patrick Matz, 92, formerly of Ashe County, was remembered at funeral services held Oct. 23 at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Darrell Graybeal officiated. Burial followed in the Johnson Family cemetery in Creston.

Mrs. Matz was born in Carter County, Tenn. to John Patrick and Louise Hodge Patrick. She was a homemaker.

She is survived by five sons, Ernest Johnson, Mountain City, Tenn., Bill Johnson, Palm, Pa., Chester Johnson, Barto, Pa., Ralph Johnson, Pond, Pa., and Fred Johnson, Creston; three daughters, Nora Lea West, Archdale, and Kathleen Hamby and Betty Carey, both of North East, Md.; a brother, Granville Patrick, Creston; a sister, Myrtle Taylor, Siler City; 36 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Blanche Blevins Winkler

Blanche Blevins Winkler, 63, was remembered at funeral services held Oct. 30 at First United Methodist Church of Lenoir. Rev. John Fowler, Rev. Larry Staples and Rev. Marietta Smith officiated. Burial followed in Mariah’s Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery.

Pallbearers were Mel Thompson, George Crowell Jr., Bill Wall, Bill Pipkins, Tony Frick, Wayne Haigler, Gene Hendricks and John Bacon.

Mrs. Winkler was born in Ashe County to Ruth Miller Blevins of Fleetwood and the late Clinton Blevins. She was preceded in death by her father; one brother, Joe Blevins; and one sister, Maude Anne Blevins. She was a member of the Lenoir BFW, a Caldwell Memorial Hospital volunteer, a Caldwell County Retired School Personnel and an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Lenoir. She was the “Weather Lady” for WJRI for many years and a graduate of Appalachian State Teacher’s College. She was also a Red Cross Board member, Caldwell Memorial Hospital Auxiliary member, Caldwell County Historical Society member, NCAE member and very active with the community in schools program.

She is survived by her husband, R.H. Winkler of the home; her mother, Ruth Miller Blevins, Fleetwood; two daughters, Ann Winkler, Granite Falls, and Mrs. Randy (Susan) Mittelstaedt, Waterville, Wash.; two sisters, Mrs. Max (Mary) Padgett, Hickory, and Mrs. Tom (Nell) Baldwin, Fleetwood; and two grandsons, Miles Mittelstaedt and Derek Philyaw.

Memorials may be made to Caldwell County Hospice, 902 Kirkwood St., NW, Lenoir, NC, 28645 or First United Methodist Church of Lenoir, 309 Church Street NW, Lenoir, NC 28645.

Bradford Earl Schang

Died: Oct. 24, 2000

Bradford Schang, 47, was remembered at memorial services held Oct. 28 at Badger Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Tommy McClure and Rev. Larry Denny officiated.

Mr. Schang is survived by his wife, Megan Schang of the home; his mother, Cella Goodyke, Arizona; his father, Ed Schang, Ohio; two step-sons, Steven Brown, Lansing, and Mark Brown, Trade, Tenn.; one step-daughter, Renee Brown, Boone; one brother, Greg Schang, Arizona; one half-brother, David Yarlott, Maine; one half-sister, Vickie Barbee, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

Walter Forbis

Walter Lee Forbis, 71, will be remembered at memorial services at a later date.

Mr. Forbis was born in Surry County to Henry Lee Forbis and Hessie Mae Carrol Forbis. He was an inspector of NCDOT. He served in the United States Navy during the Korea Conflict. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Arlene Lind Forbis.

He is survived by a son, Jason Forbis, West Jefferson; two step-sons, Peter Gordon, Nashville, Tenn., and Carl Gordon, California; a step-daughter, Pamela Seirtich, Texas; his mother-in-law, Esther Weiboldt, Lexington; a sister, Vera Forbis Gore, Mt. Airy; and a grandchild.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Ashe Memorial Hospital, 200 Hospital Ave., Jefferson, NC 28640.

W. Dean Sapp
Oxford, Pa.
Died: Oct. 11, 2000

W. Dean Sapp, 73, was remembered at funeral services held Oct. 14 at Ruffenach Funeral Home in Oxford, Pa. Burial followed in the Little Britain cemetery in Peach Bottom, Pa.

Mr. Sapp was the husband of Mary Miller Sapp with whom he shared 53 years of marriage. He was born in Marion, Va. to the late Oscar and Effie Roark Sapp. He had resided in the Oxford, Pa. area for 35 years, prior to that he was from the Hockessin, Del. area. He was a first class machine tender for 40 years with the N.V.F. Company of Yorklyn, Del. He retired in 1987. He was a member of the Gospel Lighthouse Free Will Baptist Church. He loved going to church, loved his family, fishing, gardening and traveling.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Miller Sapp, Oxford, Pa.; a daughter, Maxine Holman, Bear, Del.; three sons, Dean Jr., Aberdeen, Md., Wade, Waunakee, Wis., and Ben, Newark, Del.; two sisters, Francis, Wauchula, Fla., and Doris, Orlando, Fla.; three brothers, Rayman, Fries, Va., Allen, Elk Creek, Va., and Harold, Oxford, Pa.; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Ruffenach Funeral Home of Oxford, Pa. was in charge of the arrangements.

Sallie Beryl Bare, 79, was remembered at funeral services held Nov. 7 at Big Ridge Community Church. Rev. Russell Sheets officiated. Burial followed in the Big Ridge cemetery.

Mrs. Bare was born in Ashe County.

She is survived by her husband, Ordon Bare; three sons, Randall Bare, Benny Bare and Sherdon Bare, all of Jefferson; three daughters, Jane Marshall, Faxis, Va., Sallie Roten, Snow Camp, and Loretta Walters, Jefferson; one brother, Wayne Bare, Newark, Del.; one sister, Sibyl Leland, Jefferson; 14 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Stella Mae Blevins Barker

Stella Mae Blevins Barker, 94, was remembered at funeral services held Oct. 18 at Badger Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Billy Joe Blevins, Rev. Tommy Dollar and Rev. Ken Howell officiated. Burial followed in the Scott-Blevins cemetery.

Mrs. Barker was born in Ashe County.

She is survived by three daughters, Orlean Barker, Pauline Barker and Zola Barker, all of Jefferson; two sons, Wert Barker, Jefferson, and Glenn Barker, Warrensville; two sisters, Hettie Brooks, Jefferson, and June Blevins, Sacramento, Calif.; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Ethel M. Richardson

Ethel M. Richardson, 90, was remembered at funeral services held Oct. 23 at Franklin Missionary Baptist Church in Darlington, Md. Her pastor, Rev. William O. Hawley Sr., and Rev. Dean Wyatt officiated. Burial was held in Union cemetery in Elkton, Md.

Mrs. Richardson was born in Ashe County to the late Charlie and Lula (Roten) Ashley. She moved from Darlington, Md. to her son’s home in Rising Sun, Md. in 1988. She was a long-time member and the oldest living member of Franklin Missionary Baptist Church in Darlington, Md. She enjoyed cooking for her family and friends and spending time with her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy E. Richardson, who died on March 16, 1988; a brother, Wiley Ashley; and a sister, Pearl Weaver.

She is survived by one son, Charles J. Richardson, Rising Sun, Md.; four brothers, Don Ashley, Pequea, Pa., Lacy Ashley, Oxford, Pa., Spencer Ashley, West Jefferson, and Reggie Ashley, Davidson, Md.; four sisters, Grace Roten, Denton, Md., Edna Ashley, West Jefferson, and Delray Phillips and Mary Nell Osborne, both of Lansing; and three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Franklin Missionary Baptist Church, 2104 Franklin Church Road, Darlington, MD 21034.

Edgar Thomas Duncan Jr.

Edgar Thomas Duncan Jr., 78, was remembered at funeral services held Nov. 5 at Buffalo Baptist Church. Rev. Dean Watson and Rev. Johnny Goodman officiated. Burial followed in the Lewis family cemetery.

Mr. Duncan was born in Montgomery County, Ohio to Edgar Thomas Duncan Sr. and Frances McConnell Duncan. He served in the U.S. Navy in the Atlantic during World War II. He was married to Ozella Rash on June 7, 1945. He was retired from the Sprague Electric Company where he was a foreman in the rolling department. He was a member of the Buffalo Baptist Church where he served as the chairman of the deacon board, superintendent of the Sunday School, director of the Bible School and choir director.

He is survived by his wife, Ozella Rash Duncan; one daughter, Dollie Duncan Richardson, Ashe County; one sister, Charlotte Duncan Bolen, Kettering, Ohio; one grandchild, Betsi Petway, Mebane; two step-grandsons, Staff Sgt. Rob Richardson of the 82nd Airborne, Ft. Bragg, and Airman Bill Richardson of NATO, Netherlands; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to the Buffalo Baptist Church or Hospice of Ashe County.

Allie Mable Mash Lambert, 89, was remembered at funeral services held Nov. 9 at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Randall Greene and Rev. Warner Eller officiated. Burial followed in the Ashelawn Memorial Gardens cemetery.

Mrs. Lambert was born in Ashe County to Ham Mash and Lillie Miller Mash. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by two grandsons.

She is survived by her husband, Paul Lambert of the home; two sons, Thomas Lambert, Rocky Mount, and David Lambert, Crumpler; three daughters, June Walker and Ruth Barnes, both of Crumpler, and Ethelene Roark, Rocky Mount; a sister, Blanche Williams, West Jefferson; 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and several special friends, Ruth Eller, Linda Bare and Loretta Neaves.

Robert Kenneth Baldwin

Robert Kenneth Baldwin, 64, was remembered at funeral services held Nov. 12 at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel. Elder Kenneth Clark and Rev. Larry Shepherd officiated. Burial followed in the Graybeal cemetery.

Mr. Baldwin was born in Ashe County to Gaither Baldwin and Maggie Stike Baldwin. He was a heavy machine operator for the NCDOT. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Grant Baldwin.

He is survived by his wife, Grace May Baldwin, of the home; a brother, Jim Baldwin, Lansing; three sisters, Daphna Music, High Point, Reba Lyalls and Modeleen Dishman, both of Bristol, Tenn.; two step-daughters, JoAnn Waddell and Mildred Testerman, Grassy Creek; four step-grandsons and a step-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.

Clarence Ray Turnmire

Clarence Ray Turnmire, 87, was remembered at funeral services held Nov. 13 at Oak Grove Baptist Church. Rev. Tommy Dollar and Rev. Thomas Stuart officiated. Burial followed in the Turner Family cemetery in Warrensville.

Mr. Turnmire was born in Ashe County to the late Alse and Bertha Eller Turnmire. He was a farmer.

He is survived by two brothers, Riley Turnmire and Avery Turnmire, both of West Jefferson; one sister, Ruby Baker, West Jefferson; his caregiver, Betty Holt, North Wilkesboro; and several nieces and nephews.
