Glenn Austin, 78, was remembered at funeral services held Nov. 11 at Fort Lincoln Funeral Home in Brentwood, Md.

Mr. Austin was born in Laurel Springs and was the son of the late Robert and Ola Green Austin. He was a World War II veteran with the Army engineer corps in the South Pacific. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lurline Jones of 51 years.

He is survived by three daughters, Glenda Austin, Jeanne Miller and Cheryl Hatton; three grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. He is survived locally by three sisters, Hazel A. Koontz, Mary Austin Allen and Alice Lee Lafferty.

Memorials may be made to the local Lion’s Club.

Larry F. Roten
Lansing

Larry F. Roten, 48, was remembered at funeral services held Nov. 17 at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Tommy Dollar, Rev. Bruce Roten and Rev. Ward Sexton officiated. Burial followed in the Silas Creek Baptist Church cemetery in Lansing.

Mr. Roten was born in Ashe County. He was the chief of the Lansing Volunteer Fire Department and a machine operator for the United Chemi-Con of Lansing. He enjoyed his family, hunting, gardening and the outdoors.

He is survived by his wife, Sandy Adams Roten of the home; one son, Daniel Roten of the home; one daughter, Jennifer Roten Hart, Lansing; his parents, Gene and Irene Graybeal Edwards, West Jefferson; his father, Fred Roten, Creston; two brothers, Robert Roten, Charlotte, and Skipper Edwards, Mouth of Wilson, Va.; two sisters, Debbie Frazier, Rosewell, Ga., and Marsha Pennington, West Jefferson; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to the Lansing Volunteer Fire Department, c/o Everette Adams, 234 Mountain View Drive, Jefferson, NC 28640.

Dale Lloyd Bentley

Dale Lloyd Bentley, 64, was remembered at funeral services held Nov. 15 at Pendry’s Chapel. Rev. Lloyd King officiated. Burial followed in the Laurel Springs Baptist Church cemetery in Deep Gap.

Pallbearers were Steve Bentley, Randy Gilbert, Eric Gilbert, Lonnie Bentley, Jonathan Hamby and David Clark.

Mr. Bentley was born in Ashe County to the late Philmore and Nancy Greer Bentley. He was of the Baptist faith and retired from Singer Furniture. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Ronnie Eugene Bentley; one brother, Jessie R. Bentley; and one sister, Lessie Crump.

He is survived by his wife, Susie Hendrix Bentley of the home; three sons, Larry Dale Bentley, Ricky Allen Bentley and Brian Lynn Bentley, all of Lenoir; three daughters, Sandra Jean Clark, Morganton, Donna Kay Gilbert, Patterson, and Melissa Dawn Hodges, Lenoir; three brothers, Howard Bentley, Bill Bentley and Grady Bentley, all of Lenoir; three sisters, Mattie Whitener, Morganton, Martha Watson, Sevierville, Tenn., and Nadine Wakefield, Sawmills; and nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Pendry’s Funeral Home of Lenoir was in charge of the arrangements.

Walter Baldwin
Fleetwood

Walter Edison Baldwin, 71, was remembered at funeral services held Nov. 18 at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Homer Murdock and Rev. Ken Furches officiated. Burial followed in the Goodman Family cemetery.

Mr. Baldwin was born in Ashe County to William Eugene Baldwin and Viola Marsh Baldwin. He was a teacher in the N.C. Educational System. He taught for 22 years at West Jefferson Elementary School.

He is survived by his wife, Jessie Goodman Baldwin of the home; a son, Gary Baldwin, Fleetwood; a daughter, Linda Baldwin, Fleetwood; two brothers, Tom Baldwin and John Baldwin, both of Fleetwood; seven sisters, Clyde Miller, Fleetwood, Wanda Pugh, Abingdon, Va., Bertha Richards, Bessie Lucas, Gerthie Lucas, Mable Poling, all of Baltimore, Md., and Jean Cullison, Lancaster, Pa.; one brother-in-law, Tom Goodman, Dallas, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.

Gladys Poe Miller
West Jefferson

Gladys Poe Miller, 92, was remembered at funeral services held Nov. 16 at Mt. Jefferson Presbyterian Church. Rev. Kermit Dancy officiated. Burial followed in the Callaway cemetery.

Mrs. Miller was born in Wilkes County to James W. Poe and Magdalene Bare Poe. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Albert O. Miller.

She is survived by a son, Robert Clifford Miller, West Jefferson; three daughters, Magdalene Hauser, Raleigh, Clara Dean O’Brien, West Jefferson, and Wanda Gail Baity, Winston-Salem; a sister, Hazel Bush, Lenoir; a special friend, Eva Sue Parker, West Jefferson; 10 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews.

David Allen Hamilton

David Allen Hamilton, 75, will be remembered at funeral services on Nov. 24 at 11 a.m. at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel in Jefferson. Mr. Elliott Osowitt will be officiating. Burial will follow in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens with military rites.

Mr. Hamilton was born May 10, 1925 in Derry, N.H. to the late David Allen Sr. and Nora Harriet Stilliker Hamilton. He was a World War II Navy Veteran and retired truck dispatcher.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Hamilton; five sons, David H. Hamilton, Ronnie Hamilton and Roger Hamilton, all of New Hampshire; Steven Hamilton, Florida, and Roy Hamilton, West Jefferson; one daughter, Gayle Hurley, Florida; one stepdaughter, Lynn Taylor, Taylorsville; two stepsons, Michael Buffelli, New Hampshire, and Kent Buffelli, Colorado; two sisters, Hazel Zoerb, New Hampshire, and Stella Currier, Connecticut; numerous grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

The Hamilton family will receive friends from 9-11 a.m. on Friday prior to services at Ashelawn or at the home immediately following the services.

Joseph Walters Laurance

Joseph Walters Laurance, 86, was remembered at funeral services held Nov. 20 at Mission Home Baptist Church. Rev. Ken Furches and Rev. Jack Miller officiated. Burial followed in the Fleetwood Community cemetery.

Mr. Laurance was born in Ashe County to Joseph Tatum Laurance and Artie Walters Laurance. He was a foreman in a furniture industry.

He is survived by his wife, Eula Greene Laurance; a son, Joseph Laurance, Fleetwood; three daughters, Reba Williams, Colorado Springs, Colo., Lucy Brown, Fleetwood and Rebecca West, Virginia Beach, Va.; and eight granddaughters and nine great-grandchildren.

The family requests no flowers please. Memorials may be made to the Segraves Nursing Care Center, 200 Hospital Dr. Jefferson, NC 28640.

Bessie Clyde Farmer Phillips, 89, was remembered at funeral services held Nov. 19 at Big Springs Baptist Church by Rev. Larry Denny, Rev. Dan Hess and Rev. Larry Shepherd. Burial followed in the Calhoun cemetery.

Mrs. Phillips was born in Ashe County to David Farmer and Laura Jones Farmer. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her parents; and husband, Harrison Phillips.

She is survived by four sons, Harold Phillips and Ellis Phillips, both of Aberdeen, Md., Conley Phillips of the home and Larry Phillips, Lansing; five daughters, Shirley Brown, Mae Greer and Ruby Ham, all of Lansing, Virginia Coldiron, Warrensville and Jane Farmer, Grassy Creek; two brothers, Chester Farmer, Aberdeen, Md. and Everett Farmer, Creston; 19 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Mullis was born in Wilkes County to Jess and Nancy Bowlin Miller.

She is survived by three sons, Allen Mullis, Jefferson, Roger and Bobby Mullis, both of Laurel Springs; and one daughter, Mary Hart, Lansing.

Russell Dean Darnell, 74, was remembered at funeral services held Nov. 18 at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Rex Hall and Rev. Jim Francis officiated. Burial was held Nov. 19 in the May cemetery.

Mr. Darnell was born in Ashe County to Tivis Darnell and Lona Pennington Darnell. He was a carpenter in the building industry. He served in the United States Army during World War II.

He is survived by his wife, Tressie Mahaffey Darnell of the home; a daughter, Judy Gregg, Tough Kenamon, Pa.; two brothers, Ford Darnell, Mouth of Wilson, Va., and Dent Darnell, West Jefferson; two sisters, Francis Dolinger and Marie Blevins, both of Jefferson; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Thomas Francis Miles, 62, was remembered at funeral services held Nov. 18 at Badger Funeral Home Chapel. Father Mark Lawlor officiated. Graveside services and burial followed in the Miles Family cemetery in Lansing.

Mr. Miles was born in Chester, Pa. to Donald and Jeanne Luco Miles. He served in the United States Army.

He is survived by his wife, Peggy McCoy Miles of the home; two sons, Lonnie Miles, Lansing, and Donald Miles, Oregon; two daughters, Lisa Maire McClamery, Lansing, and Melissa Shepherd, Wilkesboro; and 11 grandchildren.

Virginia Lee Surber Church, 88, was remembered at funeral services held Nov. 17 at Mount Olive Baptist Church. Rev. Charlie McCoy officiated. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Church was born in Damascus, Va. to James Andrew and Eliza Wood Surber. She is the widow of Walter Church.

She is survived by two sons, James Church, Millers Creek, and Don Church, Laurel Springs; two daughters, Libby Logins and Dana Miller, both of Fleetwood; 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
