Mrs. Taylor was born in Ashe County to Millard Dancy and Hester Cleary Dancy. She owned her family business, J.T. Furniture in West Jefferson. She was a member of Faith Chapel Church of Deep Gap. She was preceded in death by her father, Millard Dancy; and two brothers, Sam and Ray Dancy.

She is survived by her husband, Jones Allen Taylor of the home; a son, Michael Taylor, Durham; a daughter, Debra Kingsley, Fort Myers, Fla.; her mother, Hester Dancy, West Jefferson; five brothers, Roy Dancy, Elbert Dancy, Robert Dancy and Bill Dancy, all of West Jefferson, and Dale Dancy, Livingston, Tenn.; three sisters, Myrtle Shatley, West Jefferson, Mae Hash, Mouth of Wilson, Va., and Linda Weaver, Hudson; two grandchildren, Jason and Carrie Kingsley; special friends, Marie Miller, Glendale Springs, Betty Severt, West Jefferson, Gail and Juanita Roark, Jefferson, and Karen Gallimore, Hillsville, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

Bonnie Blevins Lambert, 79, was remembered at funeral services held Sept. 29 at Badger Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Bill Ballou and Rev. John Leek officiated.

Mrs. Lambert was born to Dent and Nola Blevins.

She is survived by her husband, Earnest Lambert; four daughters, Dorothy Saunders, Jefferson, Janet Bowers, High Point, Elaine Miles, Winston-Salem, and Kathy Idol, Deep Gap; one sister, Mable Testerman, West Virginia; and 12 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

James Ottis Lail, 92, better known as “Dave,” of the Laurel Knob Community, was remembered at funeral services held Sept. 29 at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel. Priscilla Walker and Kerry Krider officiated. Burial followed in the Zion United Methodist Church cemetery.

Mr. Lail was born in Catawba County to William Lail and Sarah Jane Miller Lail. He was a brick mason. He was preceded in death by a son, James Garland Lail.

He is survived by his wife, Ardna Howell Lail of the home; a son, Gilbert Lail, Charlotte; two daughters, Linda Spillane and Sarah Greene, both of Todd; two half-brothers, Wade Lail and Woodrow Lail, both of Conover; two sisters, Henrietta Mallett, Jacksonville, Fla., and Blanche Seabock, Hickory; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Lettie Eldreth Woodard, 88, was remembered at funeral services held Sept. 20 at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Bluford Eldreth officiated. Burial followed in the Woodard Family cemetery.

Mrs. Woodard was born in Ashe County to J.R. Eldreth and Cordelia Rash Eldreth. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Ernest Woodard.

She is survived by two sons, Charles Woodard, Lenoir, and Ernie Woodard, Todd; five daughters, Geneva Eller and Billie Farmer, both of Warrensville, Betty Jean Winebarger, Lenoir, Joan Eller, Todd, and Sally Testerman, Grassy Creek; a sister, Ethel Lewis, Creston; 30 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren and a great-great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

Elwin Gerald Campbell, 44, was remembered at memorial services held Sept. 20 at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Jimmy Williams officiated.

Mr. Campbell was born in Ashe County to Ezekiel Campbell and Helen Greer Campbell. He was a truck driver for W&L Trucking.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Lou Guthro Campbell of the home; two daughters, Shannon Campbell McGrady and Misty Campbell, both of Jefferson; a brother, Jerry “Bo” Campbell, Warrensville; three sisters, Judy Eastridge, West Jefferson, Jane Miller, Myrtle Beach, S.C. and Joan Boyd, Burlington; and several nieces and nephews.

Grant Baldwin

Died: Sept. 20, 2000

Grant Baldwin, 73, formerly of Lansing was remembered at funeral services held Sept. 23 at Badger Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Jim Francis and Rev. Larry Shepherd officiated. Burial followed in the Graybeal cemetery.

Mr. Baldwin is survived by his wife, Viola Baldwin; two step-daughters, Beth Seymore, Jefferson, and Wilma Houck, Todd; two step-sons, Buster Wilcox, Lansing, and Joe Wilcox, Todd; two brothers, Jim Baldwin, Warrensville, and Ken Baldwin, Grassy Creek; three sisters, Reba Smith and Marlene Dishner, both of Bluff City, Tenn., and Daphner Music, High Point; 12 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Carter was born in Ashe County to Dryum Carter and Martha Stuart Carter. He was an agricultural farmer.

He is survived by his wife, Beulah Reeves Carter of the home; three daughters, Betty Corriher, Salisbury, Billie Chegin, Columbia, S.C. and Caroline Trent, Kingsport, Tenn.; four grandchildren; and two nieces.

Nettie Witherspoon

Nettie Witherspoon, was remembered at funeral services held Sept. 24 at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel by Rev. Wayne Osborne, Rev. Jeff Vogler and Rev. David Grinnell. Burial followed in Friendship Baptist Church cemetery in Jefferson.

Ms. Witherspoon was born in Ashe County to Minnie Howell Witherspoon and the late Andrew Witherspoon, who died in 1907. Ms. Witherspoon was a housekeeper for many residences in Ashe and surrounding counties.

She is survived by one niece, Marie Witherspoon Blevins, Jefferson; two nephews, Harold Witherspoon, Jerry Witherspoon both of Jefferson; and special caregivers and nieces, Brenda Osborne, Leanne Osborne and Ashley Osborne all of Jefferson.

Jimmy Solomon Friesland, 63, was remembered at graveside services held Sept. 21 at Ebenezer Presbyterian Church cemetery. Rev. Reeves Jones and Rev. Bill Ballou officiated.

Mr. Friesland was born in Ashe County.

She is survived by one daughter, Teresa “Bo” Davis, Elk Park; two sisters, Pearl Dishman, Jefferson, and Anna Lou Dishman, Lenoir; two brothers, Emmett Friesland, West Jefferson, and Howard Friesland, Crumpler; one grandson, David Friesland, Jefferson; one great-granddaughter, Jessica Friesland, Roan Mountain, Tenn.; and 12 nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Powers was born in Ashe County to Granville Brooks and Virginia Eller Brooks. She was a homemaker.

She is survived by her husband, Blaine J. Powers of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Bernice and Denver Johnson, Lansing; and a granddaughter, Melinda Johnson, Lansing.

Mr. Humphrey was born in Ashe County to the late Granville and Cora Alice Goss Humphrey. He was a retired farmer.

He is survived by his wife, Trula Price Humphrey; three sons, Don Humphrey, Klamath Falls, Ore., Ray Humphrey, Citrus Springs, Fla., and Sanford Humphrey, Mountain City, Tenn.; one sister, Grace Singleton, Abingdon, Va.; one step-grandson; and several nieces and nephews.

Beatrice Adams Sawyer

Beatrice Adams Sawyer, 73, was remembered at funeral services held Sept. 15 at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel in Jefferson. Rev. Reeves Jones and Elder James McNeill officiated. Burial followed in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Sawyer was born in Liberty, Ky., to the late Dexter and Ola May Adams. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and was preceded in death by a son, Earl Miller.

She is survived by her husband, Joseph Sawyer; two sons, Arnold Miller, Peach Bottom, Pa., and Michael Sawyer, Quarryville, Pa.; four daughters, Janet Leonard, Hendersonville, Shirley Asbury, Mechanicsburg, Pa., Myra Dunwoody, Lancaster, Pa., and Tracy Miller, West Jefferson; two sisters, Helen Hatfield, Columbia, Ky., and Faye Robinson, Lancaster, SC; one brother, Carl Adams, Peach Bottom, Pa.; 19 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
