R.H. Stanley, 77, was remembered at funeral services held Sept. 7 at Big Laurel Church of Christ in Christian Union. Rev. Jimmy Williams and Rev. Darrell Graybeal officiated. Burial followed in the Stanley Family cemetery.

Mr. Stanley was born in Ashe County to Abram Stanley and Alberta Neaves Stanley. He was a school bus driver for 46 years for the Ashe County School System.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Daugherty Stanley of the home; a son, Roger Stanley, Mountain City, Tenn.; a daughter, Peggy Campbell, Creston; a sister, Pearl Woods, Creston; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and one niece and several nephews.

Dayton Gale Pennington
West Jefferson
Dec. 20, 1925
Sept. 9, 2000

Dayton Gale Pennington, 74, was remembered at funeral services held Sept. 11 at Mt. Jefferson Presbyterian Church. Rev. Kermit Dancy officiated. military graveside services followed in the West Jefferson cemetery.

Mr. Pennington was born in Ashe County to Grover Cleveland and Flossie Blevins Pennington. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army in World War II.

He is survived by his wife, Bernice Hartsog Pennington; two sons, Duane Pennington, West Jefferson, and Clay Pennington, Asheville; one daughter, Karen Cooper, Warrensville; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to the Mt. Jefferson Presbyterian Church, 201 South Jefferson Ave., West Jefferson, NC 28694.

Douglas F. Powers
Charlotte
Died: Aug. 21, 2000

Douglas F. Powers, M.D., 79, was remembered at privately held funeral services.

Dr. Powers spent most of his professional life serving the needs of troubled and disadvantaged children. Until his retirement, he was a distinguished professor of human development at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Dr. Powers, a child and adolescent psychiatrist, was director of the Virginia Treatment Center for Children in Richmond and chairman of Child Psychiatry at the Medical College of Virginia and previously at Vandervilt University. He also served as director of the Bristol, Virginia-Tennessee Mental Health Clinic.

Dr. Powers was the son of the late John Quincy Powers and Mamie Osborne Powers of Grayson County, Va. He was a graduate of Tennessee Technological University and Baylor University College of Medicine. He completed his internship at Vanderbilt University and residencies in psychiatry at the University of Virginia and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

During World War II he served as a medical corpsman at Brooke Army Hospital and later as a major in the U.S. Air Force at Tachikawa, Japan. Before entering the practice of child psychiatry he was a general practitioner in Ashe County.

He was a diplomat of the American Board of Neurology and Psychiatry and a life fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. He authored, edited or contributed to numerous professional publications. His other interests included writing poetry, especially about children, woodblock print making, for which he was widely recognized and American literature. As a young man, he worked briefly as a secretary for Sherwood Anderson. He attended many literary conferences dealing with the writings of William Faulkner and Flannery O’Connor. During his tenure at UNC-Charlotte, Powers, a lifelong student, earned master’s degrees in education, human development and English literature.

He is survived by his wife, Anne T. Powers; daughter, Anne D. Powers, Carborro; two sons, John F. Powers, San Francisco, Calif., and Thomas S. Powers, Williamstown, Mass.; a sister, Irene P. Blevins, Maryville, Tenn.; and two grandchildren.

Julia Mae Roten Castle, 84, was remembered at funeral services held Oct. 21 at Rich Hill United Methodist Church. Rev. Bruce Roten and Rev. Tommy Graybeal officiated. Burial followed in the Brown cemetery.

Mrs. Castle was born in Ashe County to Emmit Roten and Cora Graybeal Roten. She was a caretaker of the Rocky Mount Museum in Piney Flats, Tenn. She was preceded in deathby her parents; and her husband, James Castle.

She is survived by a brother, Wayne Roten, Creston; and several nieces and nephews.

Beulah Madge Jones, 90, was remembered at private funeral services held at Ashelawn Memorial Gardens.

Miss Jones was born to John William and Arvilla May Bare Jones. She was a school teacher.

She is survived by two sisters, Ada Harless, Baltimore, Md. and Nellie Briley, Princeton, W.Va.; three brothers, Ryland Jones, West Jefferson, Fairfax Jones, Baltimore, Md., and Johnny Jones, Pembrooke, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Barnett is survived by one son, James Michael Barnett, Georgia; two daughters, Linda Ilene Todd, Crestline, Ohio, and Patricia Ann Berkey, Mansfield, Ohio; three sisters, Fannie Blevins, Newport News, Va., Jessie Beavers, Ohio, and Ruth Collins, Virginia; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Roark was born in Ashe County to Avery and Martisha Davis Winebarger. She was a homemaker.

She is survived by two sons, Avery Roark, West Jefferson and James Roark, Shelby; three daughters, Carol Lee Roark, Creston, Arlene McCloud, Deep Gap and Linda Hogan, Marion; one sister, Letha Allen, Pennsylvania; 13 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews

She is survived by her husband, Jim Beckwith; one daughter, Crystal Paige Beckwith of the home; one son, Brennis Michael Tribble, Wilkesboro; her mother, Helen Eldreth Veach, Wilkesboro; her grandmother, Ruth Elizabeth Ham, Wilkesboro; one sister, Sandra Kay Veach, Wilkesboro; and two brothers, Joseph Stephen Hart, Winston-Salem, and Travis Anthony Veach, Sneads Ferry.

Wiley Emmett McNeill Jr., better known as “Jack”, age 80, was remembered at funeral services held Oct 14 at Jefferson United Methodist Church. Burial followed in the Jefferson City cemetery.

Mr. McNeill was born in Ashe County to Wiley Emmett McNeill and Astoria E. McConnell McNeill. He was a supervisor over road construction. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was a member of the Jefferson United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Francis McNeill of the home; a daughter, Rebecca Mullis, Good Hope, Ga.; three sisters, Katherine Goswick, Durham, Laura Ann Jacks, Honolulu, Ha., and Mary Lillian Sturdivant, Jacksonville, Fla.; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
