Raleigh Marshall Blackburn, 88, was remembered at funeral services held Oct. 14 at Blue Ridge Baptist Church. Rev. Jerry Francis and Rev. Bill Burchett officiated. Burial followed in the Blue Ridge cemetery.

Mr. Blackburn was born in Ashe County to James Monroe and Mary Jane Blackburn. He was preceded in death by two sons, Harold Dean and Raleigh Wayne Blackburn.

He is survived by his wife, Helen Haire Blackburn; two sons, Clay Blackburn and Bill Blackburn, both of West Jefferson; two daughters, Charlotte Elliott, Todd, and Wanda Terry, Lenoir; one brother, Ocie Blackburn, Deep Gap; two sisters, Vera Church, Deep Gap, and Belva Swartz, Nebraska; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to the Blue Ridge cemetery Fund.

Ina F. Walters, 88, was remembered at funeral services held Oct. 12 at Senter Primitive Baptist Church in Crumpler by Elder James McNeill, Elder Eddie Lyle and Elder Bobby Absher. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Walters was born in Ashe County to John and Laura Dixon Fender. She was a homemaker

She is survived by one son, John Walters, Crumpler; three daughters, Glenna McNeill, Jefferson, Jean Weaver of Grassy Creek, and Betty Carlton, Jefferson; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews

Teresa Kay Church Roland, 36, was remembered at funeral services held Oct. 15 at Gordon’s Baptist Church in North Wilkesboro. Rev. Larry Adams and Rev. Fred Greer officiated.

Mrs. Roland was born to Cecil and Ruby Church of North Wilkesboro.

She is survived by her husband, Billy Roland; one son, Dustin Roland of the home; his mother, Ruby Church, North Wilkesboro; 11 sisters, Barbara Johnston, Janice Lewis, Reba Call, Tonya Reynolds, Selena Miller and Wanda Combs, all of North Wilkesboro, Maxine McGrady, Traphill, Lynette Richardson, Wilkesboro, Laura Minton, Purlear, and Crystal Wood, Roaring River; four brothers, Roger Pilkenton, Roy Lee Church, Ronnie Dean Church and Raymond Church, all of North Wilkesboro; and one step-daughter, Tisha Roland, Lansing.

Okla Fay Francis Jones, 78, was remembered at funeral services held Oct. 15 at Emmanuel Baptist Church. Rev. Eric Caudill officiated. Burial followed in the Ashelawn Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Jones was preceded in death by her husband, Kermit Clifton Jones.

She is survived by one daughter, Carol Johnson, Grassy Creek; one son, Lloyd Jones, Clinton, Tenn.; and five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and one step-grandson.

Memorials may be made to the Emmanuel Baptist Church, 1028 Deep Ford Road, Lansing, NC 28643.

Dorothy Madge Dixon Weaver, 82, was remembered at funeral services held Sept. 3 at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in the Ashelawn Memorial Gardens cemetery.

Mrs. Weaver was born in Ashe County to John Elmore Dixon and Dora Williams Dixon. She was an assembly worker in an electrical manufacturing company. She was a member of the Nathan’s Creek United Methodist Church, the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW and a member of the Nathan’s Creek Homemaker’s Club. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Frank Weaver.

She is survived by a son, Danny Weaver, Douglasville, Ga.; three daughters and son-in-laws, Betty and Bobby Stanley, Jefferson, Imogene and Garnett Goodman, Jefferson, and Maxine and Wendell Smith, Ararat, Va.; three brothers and sister-in-laws, Jim Alex and Barbara Dixon, Aberdeen, Md., and J.T. and Virginia Dixon, Crumpler; three grandchildren, Movita Stanley, Wendy Childress and Chad Smith; two grandsons, Alex and Max Childress; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Ashe, PO Box 421, Jefferson, NC 28640 or to the American Cancer Society.

Stanley Byrd Brooks, 86, was remembered at funeral services held Sept. 5 at the Ashelawn Memorial Chapel in Jefferson. Rev. Joe Blevins and Rev. Charles Blevins officiated. Burial followed in the Sulphur Springs cemetery in Chilhowie, Va.

Mr. Brooks was born in Smyth County, Va., to the late Allen and Suzanne Childress Brooks. He was a retired carpenter and a member of Bristol Baptist Church in Jefferson.

He is survived by his wife, Ruby Barker Brooks; two sons, Charles and Kenneth Brooks, both of Marion, Va.; one daughter, Arlene Woodie of West Jefferson; seven granddaughters, two grandsons and 11 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Leroy Clifford Van Wyk

Died: Aug. 22, 2000

Leroy Clifford Van Wyk, 78, was remembered at a memorial service held Aug. 25 at the First Presbyterian Church in Fernandina Beach, Fla. Burial followed at Ashelawn Memorial Gardens in Jefferson.

Mr. Van Wyk was a native of Clifton, N.J. and served in the U.S. Coast Guard. He was a professional surveyor in the New England area and retired from his engineering and surveying firm to move to Miami, Fla. Retirement was short lived and he co-founded another firm of engineers, planners and surveyors, Metric Engineering, in Miami, Fla. Following a second retirement, he moved to Grassy Creek.

He is survived by his wife, Iris Lea Van Wyk; two sons, Harold, Fleetwood, and Roy, Miami, Fla.; a daughter, Lois Van Wyk, Gainesville, Fla.; three step-daughters, Cynthia Covil, Shallotte, Carolyn Keziah, Monroe, and Lori Griffin, Savannah, Ga.; and several grandchildren and step-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Community Hospice of Northeast Florida, 4266 Sunbeam Road, Jacksonville, FL 32257 or the American Cancer Society, PO Box 575, Fernandina Beach, FL 32035.

Margaret Elizabeth Church

Died: Aug. 29, 2000

Margaret Elizabeth Church, 85, formerly of Ashe County, was remembered at funeral services held Sept. 1 at Badger Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Tommy Mathis and Minister Danny Miller officiated. Burial followed in the Claude Mash cemetery in Glendale Springs.

Mrs. Church is survived by one sister, Mary Estell Miller, North Wilkesboro; and several nieces and nephews.

Josie Proffitt Miller, 88, was remembered at funeral services held Sept. 2 at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Vandell Greene, Rev. Ray Greene, Rev. Carroll Flannery and Rev. Vernon Eller officiated. Burial followed in the Miller cemetery in Fleetwood.

Mrs. Miller was born in Watauga County to Claude Proffitt and Minnie Winebarger Proffitt. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Frank Miller; two sisters; and four brothers.

She is survived by three sons, Burl Miller, Fleetwood, Denver Miller of the home, and Arlie Miller, Tazewell, Va.; eight daughters, Gertrude Flannery, Joanne Flannery, Lundy Trivette and Lula Faye Trivette, all of Fleetwood, Mary Miller and Evon Miller, both of the home, Minnie Carrier, Claremont, and Gladys Bentley, Lenoir; a sister, SaFrona Miller, Boone; 50 grandchildren, 68 great-grandchildren and 14 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Hartsoe was born in Ashe County to William Wesley Walker and Mary Emma Faircloth Walker. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Big Laurel Church of Christ & Christian Union and a mentor to many people.

She is survived by her husband, Gwyn Hartsoe of the home; a son, Robert Hartsoe, Creston; a daughter, Joanne Parker, Atlanta, Ga.; two sisters, Ruth Husio and Belle Sapp, both of Delaware; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. DeBoard was born to Reggie Ancle DeBoard and Cynthia Loggins DeBoard. He served in the United States Army. He was preceded in death by his wife, Reba Mitchell DeBoard; a son, Blaine DeBoard Jr.; four brothers, Chester DeBoard, Maryland, Burel DeBoard, Westchester, Md., Avery DeBoard, Florida, and Reggie DeBoard, Sparta.

He is survived by three brothers, Troy Clinton DeBoard, Bel Air, Md., Robert DeBoard, Lenoir, and Billy Joe DeBoard, Winston-Salem; a stepbrother, Howard Hurley, Lenoir; three sisters, Blanche Stiles and Lowa Bauguess, both of Bel Air, Md., and Nancy Pratt, Sparta; special friends, Howard and Norma Hughes, Landerburg, Pa.; and several nieces and nephews.

Died: Aug. 27, 2000

Jo Wilma Clary Mullis, 76, was remembered at funeral services held Aug. 31 at Fletcher Memorial Baptist Church in Jefferson. Burial followed at the Jefferson cemetery.

Mrs. Mullis was born to the late Newt L. Clary and Pearl P. Clary of Nocona, Texas. She was a 1942 graduate of Nocona High School. She was a long-time member of Fletcher Memorial Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, David Walter Mullis, Jefferson.

She is survived by one son, Dr. David W. Mullis Jr., Good Hope, Ga.; one daughter, Colleen M. Hines, Dallas, Texas; two brothers, Warren G. Clary, Nocona, Texas, and Oran B. Clary, Houston, Texas; and two granddaughters, Megan Mullis and Meredith Mullis, Good Hope, Ga.
