Jesse Lee Boothe, 72, was remembered at funeral services held Sept. 18 at Badger Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in the Ashelawn Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Booth was born in Raleigh to Reese and Ella Seagraves Booth.

He is survived by his wife, Francis Davis Boothe; one sister, Eva Mae Arnold, Duncan; and one son, David Boothe, Warrensville.

Memorials may be made to the Ashe County Rescue Squad.

Charles Edward Goss
Jefferson
Died: Sept. 13, 2000

Charles Edward Goss, 74, was remembered at funeral services held Sept. 16 at Badger Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Billy Joe Blevins and Rev. Harry Osborne officiated. Rev. Bill Ballou officiated and sung. Burial followed in the Goss cemetery in Lansing.

Mr. Goss is survived by his wife, Madeline Miller Goss; one daughter, Norma Goss, Jefferson; two sons, Roger Goss, Newton, and Kenneth Goss, Wilkesboro; one sister, Pearl Lee Young, Jefferson; and one brother, Gwyn Goss, Lansing.

Carl Walden
Miami, Fla.
1909 to Aug. 4, 2000

Carl Walden, 91, died in the VA Hospital in Miami, Fla. on Aug. 4 after a long illness. He is survived by his wife, Natalie Walden.

Mr. Walden was a well-known photographer who photographed architecture and several famous people. Carl and Natalie have a summer residence in Ashe County in the Ore Knob Community where they enjoyed many summers with their friends and neighbors.

Mildred Elmae Miller Bare
Jefferson
Died: Sept. 11, 2000

Mildred Elmae Miller Bare, 79, was remembered at funeral services held Sept. 14 at Badger Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Russell Sheets and Elder Floyd South officiated. A graveside service followed in the George Miller cemetery.

Mrs. Bare is survived by two daughters, Wanda Spangler of the home, and Wilma Hartzog, Glendale Springs; three step-daughters, Nancy Miller, Wagoner, Annie Hall, Laurel Springs, and Sue Baker, Salisbury; one step-son, Franklin E. Bare, Wagoner; five grandchildren and 19 step-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Maxine Miller, Forest City, and Edith Miller, Lexington; and several nieces and nephews.

George Ervin Roten

George Ervin Roten, 67, was remembered at funeral services held Oct. 8 at Reins-Sturdivant Chapel. Rev. John J. White officiated. Burial followed in Mountlawn Memorial Park in North Wilkesboro.

Mr. Roten was born in Wilkes County to George and Ethel Mae Darnell Roten. He was a member and a deacon of the Church of God of the Union Assembly.

He is survived by his wife, Ina Faye Love Roten of the home; two daughters, Betty Cardwell, North Wilkesboro, and Beverley Buchanan, Bakersville; four sons, Kenneth Roten, Tim Roten and Joey Roten, all of North Wilkesboro, and Scotty Roten, Roaring River; five sisters, Athlee Wingler and Margie Shew, both of Wilkesboro, Johnsie Little and Maxine Reece, both of Jefferson, and Lorine Hunt, Sparta; two brothers, Dick Roten, Virginia, and Johnny Roten, Millers Creek; and 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Wilkes, PO Box 609, North Wilkesboro, NC 28659.

James Lee Hash

James Lee Hash, 73, was remembered at funeral services held Oct. 6 at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel. Rev. Bill Ballou, the Rev. Ken Furches and the Rev. Jeff Vogler. Burial with military rites at Ashelawn Memorial Gardens.Mr. Hash was born in Ashe County to Clarence and Christie Barker Hash. He was a retired warehouse manager and a World War II/Korean veteran of the US Navy and Airforce. He was a member of Fletcher Memorial Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, June Marsh Hash; one daughter, Phyllis Furches, West Jefferson; half brother, Charles Phillips, Charlotte; half sister, Betty Avery, Jefferson; two grandchildren, Tonya Lee and Michelle Furches; two great grandchildren, Matthew and Ashton Lee; a number of other half-brothers and sisters; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to the Fletcher Memorial Baptist Church Choir, c/o Junior Greer, 103 Sexton Road, West Jefferson, NC 28694.

Ruth Louise Woodruff Dillard, 69, was remembered at funeral services held Oct. 8 at Lebanon Baptist Church. Rev. Keith Childers and Rev. Gwyn Kilby officiated. Burial followed in the Dillard Family cemetery in Taylorsville.

Mrs. Dillard was born in Ashe County to the late Charlie Lee Woodruff and Jennie Hodson Woodruff. She was a homemaker and member of Lebanon Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Howard Woodruff; and four sisters, Melinda Woodruff, Fannie Woodruff, Lillian Combs and Mamie Eastridge.

She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Robert B. Dillard; three sons, Roy Dale Dillard and wife, Carol, Dennis Dillard and wife, Debbie, and Jeffery Allen Dillard, all of Taylorsville; one daughter, Robin Vickie Clay and husband, Larry, both of Taylorsville; two sisters, Fern Mullis and Ruby Rutherford, both of West Jefferson; six grandchildren, Robert (Robbie) Dillard, Christopher Dillard, Jennifer Cahill, Amber Clay, Heather Dillard and Chad Dillard; five great-grandchildren, Brandon Dillard, Ashley Dillard, Zachary Dillard, Darian Dillard and Devin Donahue; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Gene C. Sheet was remembered at funeral services held Oct. 7 at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel. Burial followed at Ashelawn Memorial Gardens. Family members and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Mr. Sheets was born in Ashe County to Mack and Chessie Sheets. He was a retired coal miner and a member of the United Mine Workers of America. He was of the Baptist faith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters Nell Goodman and Sallie Leeper; and brothers Urcle Sheets and Bryce Sheets.

He is survived by his wife, Rachel Colvard Sheets; son, Bill Sheets and wife Carolyn of Hickory; daughter, Dorothy Woolever and husband Jerry of Advance; brother, Val Sheets of Jefferson; grandchildren, Robert Sheets of Granite Falls, Dean Sheets of Valparaiso, Ind., Rachel Woolever of Orlando, Fla., and Mike Woolever of Fairfax, Va.; and 6 great grandchildren.

Mr. Shumate was born to James Garland and Edna Shumate.

He is survived by his wife, Vivian Hopkins Shumate; one son, Christopher James Shumate of the home; his mother, Edna Shumate, West Jefferson; four brothers, Howard Shumate and Larry Shumate, both of West Jefferson, Tom Shumate, Warrensville, and Harold Shumate, Crumpler; and several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

Mrs. Kerr was born in Booneville, Ark, to the late Joe Ed Roberts and Ethel Rogers Roberts.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Hershel E. Kerr, and a son, Allen Kerr.

Mrs. Kerr is survived by four daughters, Louella Baker and Jewell Driggers, both of West Jefferson, Sandra Anders, Spokane, WA, and Donnie Bundy, Red Springs; two sons, Hershel E. Kerr Jr, West Jefferson and Dale W. Kerr, Sparta; and 18 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

William Donald “Donnie” Bare Sr., 85, was remembered at funeral services held Nov. 25 at Orion Baptist Church. Rev. Rick Miller and Rev. Bill Burchette officiated. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. Bare was born in Ashe County to William Judson Bare and Callie Ada Wyatt Bare. He was the janitor at Jefferson Elementary School.

He is survived by his wife, Cordie Mae McMillan Bare of the home; three sons, William D. Bare Jr., Crumpler, Crieg Bare, High Point, and Rev. Mac Bare, Durham; a daughter, Alice Ann Sexton, Eden; two brothers, Arnold O. Bare, Aitkin, Minn., and Rudd J. Bare, Talmadge, Ohio; 15 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Ruby Kathleen Weaver Gilley, 67 formerly of Ashe County, was remembered at funeral services held Nov. 14 at Boone Family Funeral Home. Rev. Larry Shepherd and Rev. David Lyalls officiated. Burial followed in the Perry Family cemetery.

Mrs. Gilley was born in Ashe County to Fred Weaver and Ola Perry Weaver. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Lee Gilley.

She is survived by two sons, Robert Dean Gilley and Ricky Lee Gilley, both of Elkton, Md.; a daughter, Patricia Campbell, North Wilkesboro; a brother, Roger Weaver, Lansing; a sister, Alma Jean Miller, Lansing; six grandchildren, a great-grandchild and three step-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
