Billie Junior Church
West Jefferson, NC
June 3, 1934 - February 6, 2009

Billie Junior Church, age 74, of West Jefferson, died Friday, Feb. 6, 2009 at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro.

Mr. Church was born June 3, 1934 in Ashe County to the late Earl and Defina Trivette Church. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by a grandson, William Caudill.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Feb. 8, at 3 p.m. at Badger Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Ambrose Jones and the Rev. Jim Greer. Burial followed in the Emmanuel Baptist Church cemetery. The family received friends from 2-3 p.m. prior to the service.

Mr. Church is survived by: his wife, Mildred Church; four daughters, Joyce Fink of Jefferson, Janie May, Brenda Church and Linda Caudill all of West Jefferson; one son, David Church of West Jefferson; a brother, Alvis Fred Church of Raleigh; a sister, Virginia Pless of Wilkesboro;10 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, 2 step-grandchildren, 6 step-great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Badger Funeral Home was entrusted with the arrangements.

Gilbert "Gib" Owen
Gilbert "Gib" Grayson Owen Sr., age 85, of Joppa, MD, died April 26, 2011 at Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in Bel Air, MD. Born in Rugby, VA, he was the son of the late Grover Marvin Owen and Celia Jane Reedy. Mr. Owen was a disabled veteran of WWII when he became an amputee at the age of 18. He worked as a carpenter in the home improvement business and was a life member of the VFW Post #5838 in Joppatowne, and DAV #30 of Bel Air. At one time, he was very active in both organizations.

Mr. Owen is survived by his wife of 46 years, Barbara Richardson Owen of Joppa, MD; son, Gilbert G. Owen Jr. of Joppa, MD; daughter, Lisa C. Owen, and grandsons, Justin Rockel and Eric Pindell, all of Joppa, MD; sisters, Alta Richardson of Joppa, MD, Ruby Kilby, Violet Weaver and Stella Testerman, all of Mouth of Wilson, VA. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers, Earl, Lawrence, and Blake Owen.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Monday, May 2, 2011 at Wolf Knob Baptist Church in Mount of Wilson, VA. Burial will follow in the Owen Family cemetery with military rites. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service.

Helen Lyle Rose
Mrs. Helen Lyle Rose age 98, of West Jefferson, NC died on Monday, April 25, 2011 at Ashe Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Rose was born on January 4, 1913 in Ashe County, to James Worth and Flossie Byrd Lyle. Mrs. Rose was preceded in death by her husband, Delmer Rose and son, Wade Rose. Mrs. Rose and her late husband owned and operated Rose's Grocery Store in Glendale Springs for many years. She also worked at the Trading Post in Glendale Springs until she was 87 years old.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 30, 2011 at 2:00 pm at the Badger Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Elliott Osowitt. Burial will follow in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm prior to the service.

Mrs. Rose is survived by:

3 grandchildren: Mary Munsey of the home, Virginia Blevins of Surf City & John Scott Rose and wife Teresa of Raleigh

Former daughter-in-law and husband: Gwen and Dave Ashley of Jefferson and step-grandson: David Ashley of Charlotte

7 great-grandchildren: Tina Ham and husband Matt of Lansing, Michael W. Hart of Raleigh, Jason H. Blevins of Mountain City, TN, Tyler and Kate Rose both of Raleigh, Katie and Sarah Ashley both of Charlotte

3 great-great-grandchildren: Luke Rupard, Jackson and Braxton Ham all of Lansing

1 sister: Zeffa Minton of North Wilkesboro

James Garland Grogan
Mr. James Garland Grogan better known as Garland age 85, of Jefferson died on Saturday, April 23, 2011 at the Forsyth Medical Center in Winston Salem. Mr. Grogan was born on July 31, 1925 in Ashe County, NC to Raymond Andrew and Beatrice Worley Grogan. Mr. Grogan was preceded in death by his parents and one sister Bobbie Greer. Mr. Grogan served in the US Army during World War II. He retired from Phenix Chair Company. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, going to flea markets and spending time with his family.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 26, 2011 at 2:00 pm at the Badger Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Beaver Creek Christian Church cemetery with military Rites.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Monday, April 25, 2011 at Badger Funeral Home.

Mr. Grogan is survived by: 3 sons, James A. Grogan and wife Shirley, Steve Grogan and fiancée Jennifer Carter-Freeman both of West Jefferson, Christopher Grogan and wife Trish of Warrensville, one daughter, Katinka Day and husband Rhondle of West Jefferson, sister, Arlie Joines of West Jefferson, brother in-law, Norman Greer, 3 brothers, Shirley Grogan, Glenn Grogan, Arvil Grogan all of Todd, also surviving are 12 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

Ida Mae Burgess Severt
Mrs. Ida Mae Burgess Severt age 86, of Jefferson, died on Thursday, April 21, 2011 at the Margate Health & Rehab Center in Jefferson. Mrs. Severt was born on June 17, 1924 in Ashe County. Mrs. Severt was preceded in death by her parents, several brothers and sisters and an infant daughter. Mrs. Severt enjoyed quilting and flowers. She attended Big Ridge Community Church.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 23, 2011 at 3:00 pm at the Badger Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Russell Sheets. Burial will follow in Ebenezer cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm on Saturday, April 23, 2011 at Badger Funeral Home Chapel.

Mrs. Severt is survived by: her husband, Leonard Jackson Severt, one son, Jackson Leonard Severt of Charlotte, NC, one brother, Otto Burgess of Kannapolis, NC; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Margaret Louise Mahala
Mrs. Margaret Louise Mahala age 80, of Creston, NC went to be with her Lord and Savior Sunday, April 17, 2011. Mrs. Mahala was born on June 21, 1930 in Ashe County to Everett and Beatrice Cornett Lewis. Mrs. Mahala was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Owen Mahala, brother: Carl Lewis, sister and brother-in-law: Georgia and Howard Dougherty.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 21, 2011 at 2:00 pm at the Rock Creek Baptist Church by Brother Anthony Roark & Rev. Jim Henson. Burial will follow in Mahala Family cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm Wednesday, April 20, 2011 at Rock Creek Baptist Church.

Mrs. Mahala is survived by:

3 sons: Everett Mahala and wife Ann of Creston, Buster Mahala and wife Nancy of Creston &, Barney Mahala and wife Janet of Laurel Bloomery, TN

4 daughters:, Linda Price and husband James of Creston, Norene Roark and husband Lee of Creston, Alice Jenkins of Granite Falls & Rena Mae Mahala of Shelby

6 brothers: Clyde Lewis and wife Dot of Creston, Earl Lewis of Creston, James Lewis and wife Draxie of Creston, John Lewis and wife Dottie of Colora, MD, Steve Lewis and wife Alice of Cochranville, PA & Darrell Lewis and wife Muriel of West Chester, PA

1 sister: Tressie Roark of Hudson

Jackie Keith Cooper
Mr. Jackie Keith Cooper age 69, of West Jefferson, died on Friday, April 15, 2011 at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta, NC. Mr. Cooper was born on March 26, 1942 in Ashe County, NC to the late Carl and Agnes Severt Cooper. In addition to his parents Mr. Cooper was preceded in death by his wife, Wanda Greer Cooper. Mr. Cooper served in the US Army during the Vietnam conflict.

Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, April 19, 2011 at 6:00 pm at the Badger Funeral Home Chapel with military rites.

The family will receive friends following the memorial service.

Mr. Cooper is survived by: two daughters: Allison Thompson of Deep Gap, NC and Hillary Cooper of Crumpler, NC; one brother, Ken Cooper of Warrensville, NC; 10 grandchildren: T.J., Kaitlyn, Jacob, Emily, Madi, Sarah and Shelby Thompson; Josie, Dalton and Lacie Cooper. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

Betty Lou Richardson Jones
Mrs. Betty Lou Richardson Jones age 63, of Warrensville, NC died Tuesday, April 12, 2011 at her home. Mrs. Jones was born on April 22, 1947 in Ashe County to Walter Raleigh and Ruth Treadway Richardson. Mrs. Jones was preceded in death by her parents and brothers: Allen and John Richardson. She was a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church. She loved flowers, gardening and spending time with her family. She was a loving wife, mom and granny.

Funeral services will be held Friday, April 15, 2011 at 2:00 pm at Badger Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Jim Greer and Rev. Dwight Shepherd. Burial will follow in the Weaver cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm Thursday, April 14, 2011 at Badger Funeral Home Chapel.

5 grandchildren: Kristy Treva and husband Ricky of Creston, Brittany and Jacob Seatz of Zionville, Amanda and Dalton Johnson of Lansing, several nieces and nephews.

Joe Howell
Mr. Loyd Joe Howell better known as "Joe" age 79, of Lansing, NC died Sunday, April 10, 2011 at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston Salem, NC. Mr. Howell was born August 15, 1931 in Ashe County to Howard and Nonnie Osborne Howell. Mr. Howell was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Peach Howell Taylor. Mr. Howell retired from Skyline Telephone after 26 years. Mr. Howell served in the US Air Force during the Korean conflict. He was an avid collector and a jack of all trades.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 13, 2011 at 11:00 am at the Helton United Methodist Church by Rev. Julian Owens. The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Tuesday, April 12, 2011 at Badger Funeral Home Chapel.

Clyde Wayne Dowell
Mr. Clyde Wayne Dowell age 58, of Lansing, NC died Friday, April 8, 2011 in KY. Mr. Dowell was born on June 1, 1952 in Lancaster, PA to Clyde and Anna Rowland Dowell. Mr. Dowell was preceded in death by his parents. Mr. Dowell was a member of the Jefferson United Methodist Church. He was very creative and loved to build things. In his profession he was a most skilled pipe welder. He loved to hunt, fish, play video games with his son, Billy and spend time with his family.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 13, 2011 at 6:00 pm at the Badger Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Tim Starbuck. The family will receive friends from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm prior to the service.
