Gerlene Powell Shepherd
Mrs. Gerlene Powell Shepherd age 83, of West Jefferson, NC died Tuesday, February 8, 2011 at the Newman Nursing & Rehab in Newnan, GA. Mrs. Shepherd was born July 26, 1927 in Pittsylvania , VA to John Albert and Edna Stegall Powell. In addition to her parents Mrs. Shepherd was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Ralph Shepherd. Mrs. Shepherd attended Highlands Community Church. She had a great sence of humor and enjoyed playing jokes and making people laugh. She was loved by all who knew her.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 12, 2011 at 2:00 PM at the Badger Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Steve Witherspoon. Burial will follow in Jones cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM prior to the service.

Mrs. Shepherd is survived by:

2 Sons: Joseph Shepherd and wife Charlyn of Sharpsburg, GA & Barry Kent Shepherd of Wasilla, AK

1 Daughter: Pamela Gail Cox of Atlanta, GA,

1 Sister: Lorene Worrell of Greensboro, NC

3 Grandchildren: Jermy Neil Greer, Jospeh Kent Cox & Gaelyn Claire Shepherd

1 Great Grandchild: Autumn Greer

Bower Shumate
Mr. Bower Shumate age 86, of West Jefferson, NC died Tuesday, February 1, 2011 at Margate Health & Rehab Center. Mr. Shumate was born May 17, 1924 in Ashe County to the late Robert and Elvira Mullis Shumate. In addition to his parents Mr. Shumate was also preceded in death by: 1 son: Gary Shumate, 1daughter: Patricia Ann Shumate and 1sister: Grace Dillard. Mr. Shumate served in the Army during WWII. He enjoyed woodworking and hiking. He was a member of West Jefferson United Methodist Church.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 3, 2011 at 11:00 AM at Badger Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Kirk McNeill. Burial will follow in West Jefferson cemetery with military rites. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM Wednesday, February 2, 2011 at Badger Funeral Home Chapel.

Sandra Lee Osborne Spencer
Mrs. Sandra Lee Osborne Spencer age 64, of Lansing, NC died on Friday, January 28, 2011 at the Segraves Care Center in Jefferson, NC. Mrs. Spencer was born on October 20, 1946 in Ashe County, NC to Herman Evans and Haskell Weaver Osborne. Mrs. Spencer was preceded in death by father and twin sons, Jason Weaver Spencer & Donley Evans Spencer.

Memorial services will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday, May 1, 2011 in the Spencer cemetery.

Mrs. Spencer is survived by: Husband, Larry Spencer of Lansing, NC, Mother, Haskell Viola Osborne of Lansing, Two Daughters, Laura Greer and husband Tim of West Jefferson, Alicia Turnmire and husband Jeff of West Jefferson, Son, Travis Austin Spencer of Boone, Two Sisters, Karen Osborne Riddle of West Jefferson, Selma Mullis of Drexel, NC, Brother, Reid Evans Osborne of Lansing, 5 Grandchildren, Dalton Tyler Greer, Chelsie Nicole Greer, Matthew Todd Turnmire, Tierra Noel Turnmire, Khela Marie Turnmire also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

Floye Miller
Mrs. Floye Miller age 89, of West Jefferson, NC died Sunday, January 23, 2011 at Ashe Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Miller was born on June 22, 1921 in Ashe, NC to the late Lee and Dora Tucker Baldwin. In addition to her parents Mrs. Miller was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Miller, brother: A. Lake Tucker and niece: Ellen Hensley. . Mrs. Miller was a practical nurse and poet. She was gifted in music and enjoyed crocheting, cooking and helping others in need.

Graveside services will be held Thursday, January 27, 2011 at 2:00 PM at the Stonewall Memory Gardens near Manassas, VA by Rev. E. Lake Hensley.

Mrs. Miller is survived by:

Niece: Ellen Hensley, great-nephew: E. Lake Hensley & niece by marriage: Norma Dimsey

Billy Joe Shatley
Mr. Billy Joe Shatley age 80, of West Jefferson, NC died Sunday, January 23, 2011 at Forsyth Memorial Hospital. Mr. Shatley was born April 25, 1930 in Ashe County to the late Claude and Laura Faw Shatley. Bill was a member of First Baptist Church. He served in the Army during the Korean Conflict. He served in the West Jefferson Lions Club for over 50 years. He was a founder of the West Jefferson Rescue Squad. He ran Jefferson Furniture store for several years. He loved spending time with his family and friends, farming, coin and watch collecting.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 27, 2011 at 2:00 PM at the First Baptist Church of West Jefferson by Rev. Ken Morris & Rev. Michael Lea. Burial will follow in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens with military rites. The family will receive friends from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM on prior to the service.

1 Sister: Jean Reeves of West Jefferson, NC

Joanne Susan Binkley

Mrs. Joanne Susan Binkley age 59, of Hays, NC died on Saturday, January 22, 2011 at the Wilkes Regional Medical Center in North Wilkesboro, NC. Mrs. Binkley was born on May 1, 1951 in Suffolk, MA to Benjamin Franklin and Dorothy Irene Crosby Jay. In addition to her parents Mrs. Binkley was preceded in death by Sister, Judy Jay. Susan's faith was founded in Christ Jesus. She enjoyed spending time at the beach and most of all she loved spending time with her grandchildren.

Mrs. Binkley is survived by: Husband, David Binkley of Hays, NC, Daughter, Sumer (Jason) Taylor of FL, Son, Michael Minor of N. Wilkesboro, NC, Step daughter, Cheryl Carter of Lexington, NC, Grandchildren, Hannah Taylor, Sydney Taylor, Jaxon Taylor, Step-grandchildren, Lauren Carter, Claudia Carter, Sam Carter, Sister, Benita Bowman of Bristol, TN, Sister, Vicky (James) Henson of Bristol, TN, Brother, Joseph Jay of Athens, AL also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

Sharon Eyvon Beverly
Ms. Sharon Eyvon Beverly age 51, of West Jefferson, NC died on Wednesday, January 19, 2011 at her home in West Jefferson. Ms. Beverly was born on February 7, 1959 in Alexandria, VA to Ervin Jerome and Betty Day Beverly. She was preceded in death by her mother. Sharon loved to ride motorcycles. She also enjoyed working at Village Florist.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, January 23, 2011 at 2:00 PM at the Mullins Funeral Home in Clintwood, VA by Rev. Franklin Hall. Burial will follow in Beverly Family cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM on Friday, January 21, 2011 at Badger Funeral Home in West Jefferson, NC and also on Saturday, January 22, 2011 from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Mullins Funeral Home in Clintwood, VA.

Ms. Beverly is survived by: Daughter, Misty Marie Simmons of West Jefferson, NC, Father, Ervin Jerome Beverly of West Virginia, Grandchildren, Desiree Simmons, A. J. Simmons also surviving are several cousins and friends.

David Allen Richardson
Mr. David Allen Richardson age 55, of West Jefferson, NC died Monday, January 17, 2011 at his home. Mr. Richardson was born July 8, 1955 in Marion, VA to John and Verna Combs Richardson. Mr. Richardson was preceded in death by his father. He loved to hunt, listen to music and spend time with his family. He was a football fan and a New York Yankees fan.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 20, 2011 at 11:00 AM at Badger Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Lloyd Day, Rev. Lonnie Jones & Rev. Steve Leashomb. Burial will follow in the Day cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Wednesday, January 19, 2011 at Badger Funeral Home.

Leonard Douglas Blevins
Mr. Leonard Douglas Blevins age 81, of Lansing, NC died Sunday, January 9, 2011 at Forsyth Medical Center. Mr. Blevins was born on September 5, 1929 in Ashe County to Walter and Zenna Testerman Blevins. In addition to his parents Mr. Blevins was preceded in death by two brothers, Ford and Lonnie Blevins. Mr. Blevins was a member of Liberty Baptist Church where he was a faithful member. He was also a veteran who served in the US Army from 1951 till 1953. Leonard was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and American Legion Post 275 where he was past commander.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 14, 2011 at 2:00 PM at Liberty Baptist Church by Rev. Russell Sheets and Sonny Williams. Burial will follow in the Dixon - Testerman cemetery with military rites.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Thursday, January 13th at Badger Funeral Home.

Mr. Blevins is survived by:

His wife: Helen Richardson Blevins

Son - Tim Blevins and wife Carol of Lansing, NC

Daughter - Diane Nixon and husband Dean of Millers Creek, NC

Brother - Dale Blevins of Lenoir, NC
