John Paul Jones
John Paul Jones, 71 of West Jefferson died Thursday night, September 30, 2010 at the Margate Health and Rehabilitation Center in Jefferson. Mr. Jones was born on September 11, 1939 in the Nathan’s Creek Community to Rex Perry and Annie Dixon Jones. He attended the Nathan’s Creek School and graduated in l957. He was married to Melba Baldwin in 1972. Paul had many successful business ventures. He operated the Jones’ Chain-Link Fence Company, and served as a partner in the New River Tractor Company. From 1988 until his retirement in 2008, he was owner and operator of Jones Superior Muffler. He was a former member of the West Jefferson Lions Club, the Ashe County Gideon Camp and the Ashe County Chamber of Commerce. On February 22, 1976, he joined the Friendly Grove Baptist Church. Paul loved every aspect of service to this church. He was ordained in 1991 as a Deacon. In addition to serving as chairman of the Church Youth Council, Paul served on a variety of Church committees.

He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Melba Baldwin Jones; one brother: Leonard Preston Jones of Richmond, Virginia; and one sister: Helen Roland of Warrensville; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother: Rex Perry Jones, JR. The family wishes to express appreciation to Jackie Blevins, special friend and caregiver.

Funeral Services will be conducted on Sunday afternoon, October 3, 2010 at 3:00 at the Friendly Grove Baptist Church by the pastor, Rev. Wayne Osborne and the Rev. Steve Goss. The burial will follow in the West Jefferson City cemetery. The family will receive friends on Saturday evening, October 2, 2010 from 6:00-9:00 at Badger Funeral Home.

Clarence Spencer
Clarence Woodrow Spencer, son of Greeley Spencer and Maggie Sturgill Spencer was born April 7, 1926 and departed this life Sept. 29, 2010, making his stay on earth 84 years 5 months and 22 days. He was married Oct. 4, 1955 to Lovella Robinson. To this union was born two daughters, Karen and Clara. He leaves his wife, daughters, sons-in-laws, Allen Parsons and Ronnie Ham, grandson, Tristan and great-granddaughter, Emma to mourn his loss. He is also survived by: brother, Joe Spencer of Rowland Heights, CA, sister, Ann Brown of Lansing, sister-in-law, Sylvia Spencer and special niece, Anita Poplin. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Fred, Roy and Carl,

Four sisters, Grace, Orba, Pearl and Carrie and one grandson, Blake Parsons.

From 1944 to 1955 he served in the US Navy and later in the Merchant Marines.

Clarence was a carpenter by trade and was employed for several years by W. R. Vannoy and Sons. He was a good husband and father and provided well for his family and had many friends and neighbors. One of his greatest loves was the outdoors. He enjoyed working outside and hunting in the rugged mountains of Grayson County, VA. We believe his loss is heavens gain.

The family will receive friends from 1:30 – 2:30 Sunday at Badger Funeral Home.

Graveside services will be held following the visitation in the Haw Orchard cemetery by Paul Sturgill and Rev. Julian Owen with military rites.

Helen Ashley Barker
Mrs. Helen Virginia Ashley Barker age 85, of West Jefferson, died on Monday, September 27, 2010 at the Segraves Care Center in Jefferson. Mrs. Barker was born on April 6, 1925 in McDowell County, WV to James Porter and Margaret Ritter Ashley. In addition to her parents Mrs. Barker was preceded in death by, Husband, Herman Lee Barker, Daughter, Jean Ring, Brother, John Ashley. She loved to square dance, crochet and knit. She retired from Ashe Memorial Hospital where she worked as a nursing assistant. She was a member of Warrensville Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, September 29, 2010 at 2:00 PM at the Badger Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Billy Joe Blevins, Dr. Calvin Miller. Burial will follow in Barker Eller McNeill cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM on Wednesday, September 29, 2010 at Badger Funeral Home Chapel.

Mrs. Barker is survived by: Daughter - Roberta and husband Bill Elliott of West Jefferson, sister - Rita Adams of West Jefferson, brother - David H. Ashley of West Jefferson, 4 grandchildren - Crystal Elliott Couch, Steve Elliott, Shelly Ring Church, Thomas Ring, 4 great grandchildren - Keagan Church, Jordan Church, Allison Couch, Lauren Couch , also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

Mary Jane Schiller Dancy
Mrs. Mary Jane Schiller Dancy age 80, of Laurel Springs, NC died on Friday, September 24, 2010 at the Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson, NC. Mrs. Dancy was born on November 8, 1929 in West Virginia to Karl and Louise Cohr Schiller. In addition to her parents Mrs. Dancy was preceded in death by Husband, Dale Ray Dancy, 5 sisters and one brother. Mrs. Dancy loved traveling with her late husband Dale Ray Dancy when he went different places to play music. She also enjoyed working jigsaw puzzles and being retired living in North Carolina.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 27, 2010 at 3:00 PM at the Badger Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Reeves Jones. Burial will follow in New River cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM on Monday, September 27, 2010 at Badger Funeral Home Chapel.

Mrs. Dancy is survived by: Daughter, Beverly "Dale" and husband Ray McNeil, 3 Grandchildren - Robert and wife Delta Geisinger, Marlana and husband James Bell , Keith Geisinger, 3 Great Grandchildren - Emma Grace Bell, Cynthia Geisinger Humphries, Leah Bell, 2 Sisters - Anna Turner of OH, Violet Rafferty of OH, special nephew - Gail Dancy , also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

Donald Lee Daugherty
Donald Lee Daugherty age 73, of Creston, NC died on Sunday, September 19, 2010 at his home. Mr. Daugherty was born on July 20, 1937 in Ashe, NC to the late John and Maude Osborne Daugherty. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife: Hazel Daugherty, daughter: Alverta Mae Daugherty, brother: David Daugherty, sisters: Delma Sims & Della McCoy, granddaughter: Ashley Flanagan.

He was a member of Gillespie Community Church. He loved fishing, gardening and working with horses.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, September 22, 2010 at 2:00 PM at the Gillespie Community Church by Rev. Jim Francis & Rev. James Barr.. Burial will follow in Roten cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Tuesday, September 21, 2010 at Gillespie Community Church.

Alene Hamm Dillard
Mrs. Alene Hamm Dillard age 74, of West Jefferson, NC died on Friday, September 17, 2010 at the Forsyth Medical Center in Winston Salem, NC. Mrs. Dillard was born on September 22, 1935 in Ashe County, NC to William and Martha Elliott Hamm. Mrs. Dillard was preceded in death by parents, Husband, Johnson Dillard, Daughter, Amanda Dillard and Son, Tony Dillard. Mrs. Dillard was a member of Bethel Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 20, 2010 at 11:00 AM at the Bethel Baptist Church by Rev. Jimmy Williams & Rev. Tommy Dollar. Burial will follow in Dillard cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Sunday, September 19, 2010 at Badger Funeral Home.

Mrs. Dillard is survived by: 5 Sons - Clarence Dillard, Ray Dillard, Garland Dillard, Joe Dillard, Jerry Dillard all of West Jefferson, Brother - Darrell Hamm of Valparoparis, IN, half-brother - Bud Osborne of West Grove, PA, Sister - Margaret Howell of Lansing, NC, also surviving are 12 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

William "Bill" Blevins
Mr. William Blair Blevins better know as Bill age 74, of Lansing, NC died Monday, September 13, 2010 at Watauga Medical Center. Mr. Blevins was born on December 27, 1935 in Ashe County to the late Edmond and Osie Blevins. In addition to his parents Mr. Blevins was preceded in death by 2 brothers and 3 sisters. Mr. Blevins was a dedicated husband and father. All his grandchildren and great-grandchildren were his pride and joy.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, September 15, 2010 at 2:00 PM at the Badger Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. J. C. Darnell & Rev. Lawrence Goodman. Burial will follow in Scott-Blevins cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Tuesday, September 14, 2010 at Badger Funeral Home Chapel.

Grandchildren: Zachary Blevins, Nathan Blevins, Matthew Blevins, Jonathan Eldreth, Kegan Blevins, Jonie Blackstock, Brianne Holloway, Robbie Calhoun, Kendra Calhoun & Jessica Peele

Great-grandchildren: Grayson Blevins, Haylee Blevins, Ryan Blackstock, Gavin Peluso, Brooke Calhoun & Dylan Short

Sidney Samuel Absher
Mr. Sidney Samuel Absher age 87, of West Jefferson, NC died on Monday, September 13, 2010 at his home. Mr. Absher was born on December 23, 1922 in Ashe County to the late Lincoln and Beulah Little Absher. Mr. Absher was a US Army veteran who served in WWII. He retired from the West Jefferson Post Office after 23 years of service He was a member of First Baptist Church of West Jefferson. He loved spending time with his granddaughter and loved sports, especially basketball.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, September 15, 2010 at 11:00 AM at the Badger Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Michael Lea & Rev. Ken Morris. Burial will follow in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens with military rites. The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM prior to the service.

Carmen Lyall Roth
Carmen Vincente Almarcha Lyall Roth age 86, of Jefferson, NC died on Saturday, September 11, 2010 at the Margate Health and Rehab Center in Jefferson, NC. Mrs. Roth was born on April 28, 1924 in Mercie LaCombe, Algeria to Elroy and Leonore Riquelme Almarcha. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Larry Lyall, sisters, Henriette Bleuzet, Eleonore Predo and brother, Vincent Almarcha. She did not let her handicap hinder her making her a strong influence on the handicapped. She volunteered for the Ashe Services for the Aging, loved boar hunting in her younger years, going to bull fights, wrestling and boxing. She enjoyed life to its fullest. Mrs. Roth was most proud when she became a United States citizen. More than anything she loved spending time with her family. The family would like to thank the staff of Margate Health and Rehab and High Country Health Care Hospice for their special care. She was a member of Bald Mountain Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 13, 2010 at 3:00 PM at the Bald Mountain Baptist Church by Rev. Lawrence Goodman and Rev. David Testerman. Burial will follow in Big Ridge cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM on Monday, September 13, 2010 at Bald Mountain Baptist Church.

Mrs. Roth is survived by: daughter - Georgette and husband Larry Scott of Fleetwood, son - Jean-Claude and wife Leigh Lyall of Fleetwood, step son - Johnny Lyall of Jefferson, two brothers - Gabriel Almarcha of Montpellier, France, Hubert Almarcha of Paris, France, sister - Clemente Benigno of Aniane, France, 6 Grandchildren - Amy and husband Jason Grodi of Suffolk, VA, Tommy and wife Kristen McNeill of Fleetwood, Jimmy McNeill of Fleetwood, Mathew Scott of Lynchburg, VA, Brandy Lyall of Jefferson, Christopher Lyall of Fleetwood, 3 Great Grandchildren - Paryn Grodi, Eldalynn McNeill, Alaina McNeill, Step Grandchild - Kenneth Lyall , also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

Berniece Viola Hartsog Pennington
Mrs. Berniece Viola Hartsog Pennington age 87 of West Jefferson died Friday, September 10, 2010 at Ashe Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Pennington was born in Ashe County on February 26, 1923 to the late Roy and Della Elliott Hartsog. She worked for as a nurse for Ashe Memorial Hospital. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Dayton Pennington.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 11, 2010 at 4:00pm at Badger Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Billy Robinson. Burial will follow in West Jefferson City cemetery. The family will receive friends from 3:00-4:00pm prior to the service Saturday at Badger Funeral Home.

Mrs. Pennington is survived by, one daughter, Karen Cooper of Warrensville, two sons, Duane Pennington of West Jefferson, Clay Pennington of Asheville, one sister, Alice Roark of Shelby, NC, 4 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren also survive.

Ethel Greer Taylor

Mrs. Ethel Greer Taylor age 82, of Warrensville, NC died on Wednesday, September 1, 2010 at Ashe Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Taylor was born on January 25, 1928 in Ashe County to the late Enoch and Dorothy Eller Miller.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 3, 2010 at 7:30 PM at the Badger Funeral Home by Rev. Jim Greer. Burial will follow in Carolina Memorial Park, Saturday, Sept. 4th at 11:00 AM. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM on Friday prior to the service.

Mrs. Taylor is survived by: 3 Sons - Harold Greer of Lansing, NC, Rev. Jim Greer of Warrensville, NC & Roy Greer of Lansing, NC

Joseph Eugene Roland
Mr. Joseph Eugene Roland age 78, of Linwood, NC formally of Ashe died on Friday, August 27, 2010 at the Brian Center in Lexington, NC. Mr. Roland was born on March 30, 1932 in Ashe, NC to Gene and Ida Elliott Roland. Mr. Roland loved music, playing the guitar, banjo and dulcimer. He was a very tender hearted man. Mr. Roland was preceded in death by his siblings, Carrie Darneh, Villa Neigh, Flake Roland, Orn Roland and his wife, Mary Dishman Roland.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 30, 2010 at 2:00 PM at the Badger Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. David Wooten and Rev. Glen Woodie. Burial will follow in Roland cemetery in Jefferson. The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM on Monday, August 30, 2010 at Badger Funeral Home Chapel.

Mr. Roland is survived by: Daughter - Mary Gay Saddler of Linwood, NC, Sister - Virginia Lynch of Thomasville, NC, Brother - Howard Roland of GA, 2 Grandchildren - Sherry and husband Bobby Miller, Rebecca Alvarez, 4 Great Grandchildren - Senina Hensley, Riley Perdue, Zachary Miller, Olivia Miller , also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
