William Worth Barker

Mr. William Worth Barker, better known as Worth, age 79 of Creston, formerly of Lansing, NC died Friday, March 19, 2010 at Margate Health & Rehab. Mr. Barker was born March 19, 1931 in Ashe County to the late Walter and Bessie Stike Barker. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by his wife, Ossie Miller Barker, brother: Ford Barker, sister: Faye Jones and grandson: Jessie Barker. He loved fishing and being outdoors.

Funeral services will be held 2:30 Sunday, March 21, 2010 at Badger Funeral Home Chapel by Minister Danny Miller and Rev. Darrell Graybeal. Burial will follow in the Miller–Mash cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30 – 2:30 prior to the service.

Mr. Barker is survived by:

Two sons: Billy Barker of Laurel Springs and Buster Barker of West Jefferson

Four daughters: Maxine and Mabel Roten both of Creston,

Robin Jones of West Jefferson and Shirley Neaves of Jefferson

26 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren

Sherrie Lovelace Ashley

Mrs. Sherrie Lovelace Ashley age 48, of Jefferson, NC died on Thursday, March 18, 2010. Mrs. Ashley was born on November 10, 1961 in Ashe County, NC to Jack and Evelyn Blevins Lovelace. Mrs. Ashley was preceded in death by Sisters, Janice Kay Lovelace, Audrey Janette Lovelace. Sherrie loved to sing and listen to music. She was always willing to help anyone who was in need. She worked for Margate Health and Rehab for 20 years and currently she worked for the Villages of Ashe. Spending time with and caring for her family was her top priority.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 22, 2010 at 4:00 PM at the Shelter Baptist Church by Rev. Chris Goodman and Rev. Joe Riley Blevins. Burial will follow in Scott-Blevins cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM on Monday, March 22, 2010 at Shelter Baptist Church.

Mrs. Ashley is survived by: Daughter, Brandy Lyall of Jefferson, Sons - Derek Richardson and wife Paige of Jefferson, Christopher Lyall of Boone, Parents, Jack and Evelyn Blevins Lovelace of Jefferson, Sisters - Charleen Edwards of Hillsville, VA, Sandra Hamm of Jefferson, Granddaughter - Katie Richardson , also surviving are several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

Flowers will be appreciated, or memorials may be made to Katie Richardson Education Fund, 395 Oscar Day Road, Jefferson 28640.

Wilma Hanks Tedder

Wilma Maye Hanks Tedder, age 98, of Lansing, NC, died Thursday, March 18, 2010 at her home. Mrs. Tedder was born June 1, 1911 in Ashe County to the late John and Flora Jones Hanks. In addition to her parents she was also preceded in death by her husband, Howard Tedder, brothers: Gwyn, Roy and Avery Hanks and half brother: Amborse Hanks, half sister Jean Gambill. Mrs. Tedder was a member of Sturgills Baptist Church. She loved going to church, reading, gardening, canning and spending time with her family.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, March 20, 2010 at Sturgills Baptist Church by Rev. Lloyd Day and Rev. Jimmy Williams. Burial will follow in the Perry cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30 – 2:00 PM prior to the service.

Mrs. Tedder is survived by:

One daughter: Katherine Sturgill and husband Edward of Lansing

2 grandchildren: Tommy Sturgill and wife Allison and Timmy Sturgill and wife Lisa

3 great-grandchildren: Cheyenna and Olivia Sturgill and Jacob Goodman

Lucille McLeod Brown

Mrs. Lucille McLeod Brown age 91, of Grassy Creek, NC died on Friday, March 12, 2010 at the Segraves Care Center Jefferson. Mrs. Brown was born on February 14, 1919 in Sumter, SC to the late John and Edna Ross McLeod. Mrs. Brown was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert Brown.

Graveside services will be held on Monday, March 15, 2010 at 3:00 PM at the Florence County Memorial Gardens. Burial will follow in Florence County Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Brown is survived by: Daughter, Betty Clawson of Grassy Creek, NC, Son, Hubert Lee Brown of Darlington, SC, 13 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren,

4 great-great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

Hester Cleary Dancy

Mrs. Hester Mable Cleary Dancy, age 95 of West Jefferson, NC died Thursday,

March 11, 2010 at Ashe Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Dancy was born August 16, 1914 in Wilkes County to the late Robert and Carrie Wagoner Cleary. In addition to her parents she was also preceded in death by her husband. Millard Dancy, three sons: Sam, Ray and Bill Dancy, two daughters: Vergie Taylor and Wanda H ash. She was a member of Flat Grove Baptist Church. She loved gardening and spending time with her family.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday, March 14, 2010 at Badger Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Tommy Dollar and Rev. Joey McClure. Burial will follow in the Kemp-Lewis cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30- 2:00 PM prior to the service.

4 sons: Elbert, Roy and Robert Dancy all of West Jefferson &

Dale Dancy of TN

2 daughters: Myrtle Shatley of West Jefferson & Linda Weaver of Hudson

J. C. Jenkins

Mr. James Cliff Jenkins better known as J. C. age 81 of West Jefferson, passed away Sunday, March 7, 2010 at his home. He was born February 1, 1929 to Edward Mitchell Jenkins and Pearl Beatrice Wyatt. He is survived by his wife Margaret Phillips Jenkins, two sons: Dr. Alvin P. Jenkins of West Jefferson and James Douglas Jenkins of Rhonda, NC, three grandchildren, Dr. Emily Jenkins Stopper of West Jefferson, James Luke Jenkins of San Diego, CA, Maggie Jenkins Simmons of Rhonda, NC, one great-grandson, Ezekiel Paul Simmons. One brother, Edd Jenkins Jr. of Jefferson, two sisters, Marcella Goodman of West Jefferson and Melba Phillips of N. Wilkesboro

Mr. Jenkins was president of the first Shrine Club in Ashe Co. and served two consecutive terms as Master of Ashe Masonic Lodge 594. J. C. and Dean Hurley established the first garbage collection service in Ashe County. He was a private pilot and actively promoted the building of the Ashe County Airport. J. C. was a founding member of Ashe Rescue Squad and served with the West Jefferson Fire Dept. for several years. He was a very prominent business man in the town of West Jefferson for many years.

Memorial services will be held at 10:00 AM Wednesday, March 10, 2010 at Badger Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Michael Lea and Rev. Ken Morris. The family will receive friends following the service until 12:00 Noon.

Albert Severt

Mr. Albert L. Severt age 86 of West Jefferson, NC died Sunday, March 7, 2010 at the James H. Quillen Veterans Hospital in Johnson City, TN.

Mr. Severt was born July 19, 1923 in Ashe County to the late Thomas and Louise Dillard Severt. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by brothers and sister: Florence, Millard, Fred, Charlie, Troy and George Severt.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday, March 11, 2010 at Badger Funeral Home Chapel by Elder James McNeill, Elder John Jackson, Elder Eddie Lyalls and Rev. Mace Johnson. Burial will follow in Mountlawn Memorial Park in Boone with military rites. The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:30 PM Wednesday, March 10th at Badger Funeral Home.

Glaydon Trivette

Glaydon Trivette age 74, of Todd, NC died on Friday, March 5, 2010 at the Carolinas Medical Center Mercy Hospital in Charlotte, NC. Mr. Trivette was born on January 8, 1936 in Watauga, NC to the late Edison and Pearl Miller Trivette. He was preceded in death by Son, Tom Trivette, Sister, Earlene Plitt, Brother, Eddie Trivette, Brother, Bernard Trivette, Brother, Newt Trivette. He was a member of Valley Home Baptist Church where he loved to sing. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 9, 2010 at 11:00 AM at the Valley Home Baptist Church by Rev. Guy Testerman and Rev. Ken Holmes. Burial will follow in Trivette Family cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Monday, March 8, 2010 at Badger Funeral Home.

Evelyn Sikes Crooks

Evelyn Sikes Crooks, age 83, of Jefferson, NC died Sunday, February 21, 2010 at Margate Health and Rehab Center. Ms. Crooks was born June 8, 1926 in Cumberland County, North Carolina to the late Amos and Cora Furmidle Sikes. She loved gardening and playing Bingo. Evelyn was very special to all her friends.

Memorial services will be announced at a later date.

Kyle Dickson

Mr. Kyle Koontz Dickson age 91 of Jefferson, NC died Saturday, February 13, 2010 at his home. Mr. Dickson was born August 19, 1918 in Ashe County to the late Walter and Maude Jones Dickson. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his son, Anthony Kyle “Tony” Dickson. Mr. Dickson was a US Army veteran of WWII. Mr. Dickson served the Ashe County school system beginning his career as teacher and basketball coach at Virginia-Carolina High School. He later taught at Healing Springs School and ended his career serving as Guidance Counselor at Ashe Central High School. In his retirement years he was an avid golfer. Mr. Dickson was a member of the West Jefferson United Methodist Church.

Services for Mr. Dickson are private.

Mr. Dickson is survived by:

One granddaughter, Kylie Dickson of Raleigh

Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Mary Evelyn Carlton

Mrs. Mary Evelyn Moss Carlton, age 70 of West Jefferson, NC died Sunday, February 7, 2010 at Britthaven of Wilkesboro. Mrs. Carlton was born June 26, 1939 in Macon County, NC to the late Alex and Nellie Martin Moss. In addition to her parents she was also preceded in death by her husband, Glenn Carlton. Mrs. Carlton attended St. Francis Catholic Church. She loved her dog, Snickers and doing puzzles.

Committal services will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday at Badger Funeral Home Chapel due to the inclement weather. Burial will at a later date be in the Gap Creek cemetery.

Mrs. Carlton is survived by:

1 brother: William Moss of Charlotte

several nieces and nephews also survive.
