Miss Lois Jean Eldreth, age 54 of Jefferson, NC died Wednesday, January 6, 2010 at Margate Health & Rehab Center. Miss Eldreth was born August 19, 1955 in Ashe County to the late Thomas and Lottie Widner Eldreth. She was a member of Apple Grove Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 9, 2010 at 2:00 PM at Badger Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Charles McCoy & Minister Danny Miller. Burial will follow in the Tuckerdale Community cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1-2 pm Saturday prior to the service.

Gertie Scalf
Mrs. Gertie Mae Blevins Scalf, age 87 of West Jefferson, NC died Tuesday, January5, 2010 at Margate Health and Rehab Center. Mrs. Scalf was born April 27, 1922 in Ashe County to the late Hattie Stamper Blevins. In addition to her mother she was also preceded in death by her husband, William Scalf.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 9, 2010 at 11:00 AM at Badger Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Billy Joe Blevins. The family will receive friends from 10:00 – 11:00 AM prior to the service.

One brother: J. D. Blevins of Lansing

Edward "Mick" Stuart

Mr. Edward Mitchell Stuart, better know as Mick, age 75 of Lansing, NC died Tuesday, January 5, 2010 at Watauga Medical Center. Mr. Stuart was born March 12, 1934 in Ashe County to the late Delmar and Dell Adams Stuart. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by a sister, Eva Baldwin. His wife Shelby of 51 years was always by his side. His daughters, Lisa and Debbie were the sparkle of his eyes. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and his special great-grandson, Malachi. He enjoyed hunting, antique cars and looking at the fall leaves on the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Funeral services will be held at 7:00 PM Saturday, January 9, 2010 at Badger Funeral Home Chapel by Minister Danny Miller, Rev. Fred Richardson, Rev. Lundy Finley and Rev. Lloyd Day. The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 7:00 PM prior to the service. Burial will be held at 1:00 PM Sunday in the Dixon cemetery.

Nora Louise Howell Osborne

Mrs. Nora Louise Howell Osborne, age 68 of Lansing, NC died Monday, January 4, 2010 at Forsyth Medical Center. Mrs. Osborne was born April 2, 1941 in Ashe County to the late Roger “Sugar Bowl” and Bernice Jones Howell. In addition to her parents she was also preceded in death by a brother, Walter Graham Howell. She was a faithful member of Sabbath Home Baptist Church. She loved quilting, sewing, working outside and spending time with her family.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, January 8, 2010 at Sabbath Home Baptist Church by Rev. Earl Woods and Rev. Dennis Poe. Burial will follow in the Osborne Family cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:00 – 2:00 PM prior to the service.
Mrs. Osborne is survived by, her husband of 53 years, James Paul “Buck” Osborne, three sons, Harry Wade Osborne and Velma of Jefferson, Thomas Osborne and wife Rose of Jefferson, Robert Osborne and wife Robin of West Jefferson, one daughter, Sharon Janie Skrzysinski and husband Philip of FL, two brothers, Rev. Ken Howell and wife Clarcy of Warrensville & Thomas Bruce Howell and wife Kathy of Franklin, NC, four sisters, Faye Blevins and husband Michael of Fleetwood, Gaye Blizzard and husband Steve of Greensboro, Alta Sue Elledge and husband Steve of Reedsville, Ada Lynn Duncan and James of Millers Creek , 6 grandchildren, Jasper, Gloria, Tommy, Monica, Mathew, Kimberli, 10 great-children, 7 step-grandchildren, 11 step-great-grandchildren, special friends, Dorothy Davis, Betty Barker and Rosa Belle Jones, and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Joe Phipps
Joe Phipps, 74, of Westminster died suddenly on Friday, January 1, 2010 at his home.
Born August 10, 1935 in Grassy Creek, NC, he was the son of the late Chester and Madeline Cox Phipps. He was the husband of Shirley J. Baker Phipps, his wife of 48 years, whom he married, June 3, 1961.
He was an Air Force Veteran. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering at North Carolina State University and was retired from the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory.
He was an avid reader and had attended the Church of the Open Door.
Surviving in addition to his wife are daughter and son-in-law Susan Phipps Eikenberg and John Eikenberg of Finksburg and son and daughter-in-law David Joe and Dawn Phipps of Littlestown, PA, brother Jack Phipps of Anaheim, CA. Also survived by four grandchildren, Heather Phipps, Kirsten Eikenberg, Sydney Phipps and Alyssa Eikenberg, and great-grandson Aspen Legate and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by siblings Myrtle Wolfe, Lorraine Clark, Cleta Hartsoe, Hazel Licefi, Mary Stockton and Burl and Earl Phipps.
Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday January 5, 2010 at 11:00 am at the Church of the Open Door in Westminster, MD with Rev. John Campbell officiating.
Interment will be in New River cemetery in Grassy Creek, NC following the visitation, Wednesday, January 6, 2010 by Rev. Wayne Jones.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, January 6, 2010 from 11:00am-12:00noon at Badger Funeral Home.

Dale "Junior" Combs
Dale Emmett Combs, Jr., better known as Junior, age 46, of Glendale Springs, died Tuesday, December 29, 2009 at Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem after a short battle of lung cancer. Junior was born December 26, 1963 in Ashe County to Dale and Carolyn Price Combs. He was a loving dad, son, brother and uncle.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Thursday, December 31, 2009 at Flat Grove Baptist Church by Rev. Joey McClure, Rev. Randall Greene, Rev. Tommy Dollar & Rev. Alan Combs. Burial will follow in the Goodman cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 2:00 PM prior to the service.

Dr. Dean C. Jones Jr.

Dr. Dean C. Jones Jr., better known as Doc age 78, of Jefferson, NC died Tuesday, December 29, 2009 at Ashe Memorial Hospital. Dr. Jones was born February 12, 1931 in Charlotte, NC to the late Dr. Dean Jones Sr. and Lettie Wagoner Jones. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by his daughter in law, Robin Barker Jones.
Dr. Jones and his parents lived in the original Ashe Memorial Hospital from 1944 when his father opened the hospital until 1956 when they built a home behind the hospital.
Dr. Jones graduated from Jefferson High School. He continued his education at the University of North Carolina and the UNC School of Medicine. He followed with an internship and surgical residency at Carolina Medical Center. He also did a 6 month pathology residency and 1 ½ year preceptorship before returning home to begin his 44 years of surgery serving the community that he loved. He was a member of the NC Medical Society, The American Medical Association and The American Board of Surgery.
He was an active member of the Jefferson United Methodist Church where he served as Chairman of the Administrative Board. He was a Rotarian serving in many capacities including president. During his years with Ashe Memorial Hospital he served as Chief of Staff and as a member of the Board of Directors. He was very active in his community, having helped to get the Red Cross Blood Mobile in the county. He helped to start what became “meals on wheels” and helped establish Ashe County Park. He was honored as “Man of the Year” in the 1970’s. He was also a member of the first Ashe County Sports Hall of Fame. He loved attending UNC and Ashe County ball games. He served as Ashe County’s team doctor for many years. He loved a good joke and fishing with family and friends. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather, nicknamed Grandoc. He always put the well being of his patients above all else. He will be greatly missed but his legacy lives on. He lived out the motto “He profits most who serves best”
Funeral services were held on Friday, January 1, 2010 at 2:00 PM at the Jefferson United Methodist Church with Rev. Dr. Keith Franklin officiating. Burial followed in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens. The family will received friends from 1-3 PM and 6-9 PM Thursday, December 31, 2009 at Badger Funeral Home.

William "Bill" Lewis

Mr. William "Bill" Wayne Lewis age 63, of Stony Point formerly of Jefferson, NC died on Wednesday, December 23, 2009 at his home in Jefferson. Mr. Lewis was born March 18, 1946 in Ashe County, NC to the late James Lee and Dessie Mae Eastridge Lewis. Including his parents he was preceded in death by two infant brothers and brother, Dean Lewis. He was an avid collector of John Deere tractors and memorabilia. He was owner of Lewis Furniture Store in West Jefferson for 20 years.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 28, 2009 at 2:00 PM at the Badger Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Lloyd Day. Burial will follow in Jefferson cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM on Monday, December 28, 2009 at Badger Funeral Home Chapel.
Mr. Lewis is survived by: his wife: Wanda Lewis, two sons: David Lewis of Taylorsville, NC & Danny Lewis of Stony Point, NC, two brothers: Robert Lewis of Lansing, NC & Denver Lewis of Lansing, NC, one sister: Lola Church of High Point, grandson: Dyson Lewis, also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
