Vernon "Buzz" Lyle

Mr. Vernon C. Lyle, know as “Buzz,” age 81, of Lansing died Tuesday, October20, 2009 at his home. Mr. Lyle was born on May 8, 1928 to Chester and Ethel Davis Lyalls. He was a faithful member of the Pond Mountain Primitive Baptist Church. He worked for the furniture industry for 26 years employed by Buffalo Manufacturing and later, Weaver’s Manufacturing. He enjoyed farming, weather lore and working with small engines. He was a loving husband to his wife, Elizabeth Ida Stevens Lyle for 53 years. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one sister, Beulah Lyle.

Mr. Lyle is survived by his wife, one daughter: Janie L. Shumate and husband, Gary of the Hayes community of Wilkes County: four brothers: Elder Eddie Lyle and wife Vergie of West Jefferson, Bryan Lyle and his late wife, Diana, of Greensboro, Bob Lyles and wife Sadie of West Jefferson, Billy Jo Lyle and wife Susie of Jefferson. Two grandchildren, Davis Eric Baker and David Ryan Baker, six great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM Friday, October 23, 2009 at Badger Funeral Home Chapel by Elder Sam Whittington, Elder Randy Carter, and Elder Schultz Pratt. The family will receive friends Thursday, Oct. 22nd from 6:00-9:00 PM at Badger Funeral Home. The burial will follow in the Davis Family cemetery in Lansing by Rev. J. B. Hamm.. Flowers will be appreciated or memorials may be made to: Pond Mt. Primitive Baptist Church, c/o Jessie Baldwin, 103 C Sexton Rd., West Jefferson, NC 28694. Friends may call at the home any time.

Larry Turner

Mr. Larry Glenn Turner age 53, of West Jefferson, North Carolina died on Tuesday, October 13, 2009 at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Mr. Turner was born on February 17, 1956 in Davidson County to Donald and Carol Jarrett Turner.

Funeral services will be private.

Three brothers: Steve Turner of TN, Kenneth Turner of Asheboro, NC & Donnie Wayne Turner of Franklinville, NC, also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

Irene Parker Shatley

Mrs. Francis Irene Parker Shatley, age 87 of West Jefferson, NC died Tuesday, October 6, 2009 at Ashe Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Shatley was born September 23, 1922 in Big Four, West Virginia to Roby and Sessie Goodman Parker. In addition to her parents she was also preceded in death by sisters: Hallie Canter and Lena Mae Collins, brother: Rhondal Parker and grandchild: Jody Shatley. Mrs. Shatley was a member of West Jefferson First Baptist Church. She loved quilting and gardening and spending time with her grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 PM Friday, October 9, 2009 at Badger Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Michael Lea and Rev. Ken Morris. Burial will follow in the West Jefferson cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11:30 – 1:30 prior to the service.

Mrs. Shatley is survived by,

Two sons: Ray Shatley and wife Margie of Mt. City, TN and J. R. Shatley and wife Shonean of West Jefferson, NC

Three daughters: Lena Ruth Roten and husband Vernon of West Jefferson, NC,

Joann Houck and husband Kent of Todd, NC and Elizabeth Tomlinson and husband Roy of Holiday TN

9 grandchildren: Deborah, Keith & Sanjo Shatley, Stacy Borkowski, Francis Eller, Robin Blackburn, Danny Houck, Betty Vitt and James Tomlinson, 13 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews

Henry Lum

Mr. Henry Chong Dock Lum age 82 of Jefferson, NC died Sunday, October 4, 2009 at Margate Health and Rehab. Mr. Lum was born October 3, 1927 in Honolulu, Hawaii to the late Phillip and H. A. Lum. Mr. Lum served in the US Army in WWII. Henry attended medical technology school in St. Louis, MO. He was a medical technologist in Lexington, NC then at Ashe Memorial Hospital for 39 years. He was director of radiology and anesthesia departments. He was a member of the hospital board of directors. He was a member of the Lions Club and an avid fisherman, poker player and sports fan.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Wednesday, October 7, 2009 at the Jefferson United Methodist Church by Rev. Dr. Keith Franklin. Burial will follow in the Jefferson cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 PM Tuesday, Oct. 6th at Badger Funeral Home.

1 daughter, Dr. Tammy Thore and husband Joe of Jefferson

2 sons: Phil Lum and wife Chris of Advance, NC & Charles Dillard and wife Joyce of Jefferson, NC

1 brother: David Lum of Hawaii

2 sisters: Virginia Wat and Helen Lum of Hawaii

5 grandchildren: Katie and Olivia Thore, Atticus and Maxwell Lum and Michelle Dillard and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Roy Earl Miller

Mr. Roy Earl Miller, better known as Earl, age 71 of Lansing, NC died Thursday, October 1, 2009 at Ashe Memorial Hospital. Mr. Miller was born September 30, 1938 to William Worth and Aulsie Stidhams Miller. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Ilean Miller. Mr. Miller enjoyed attending shooting matches, listening to bluegrass music and hunting.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Monday, October 5, 2009 at the Badger Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Lloyd Day. Burial will follow in the Pennington cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:00 – 2:00 PM prior to the service.

Mr. Miller is survived by;

4 brothers: Michael Miller of Lansing, Robert Miller of Warrensville, Verrnie Miller of Whitetop, VA and Kenneth Miller of Toughkennon, PA

7 sisters: Tina Blevins, Debbie Miller, Betty Ellis and Theresa Miller all of Lansing, Myrlean Hufford of West Grove, PA, Brenda Eller of Mouth of Wilson, VA and Elizabeth Miller of West Jefferson

several nieces and nephews also survive.

Rhondle Carlton Day

Mr. Rhondle Carlton Day age 68 of Laurel Springs, NC died Sunday, September 27, 2009 at his home. Mr. Day was born March 24, 1941 in Ashe County to the late

Herbert and Grace Jones Day. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by his wife, Ila Belle Day and brother, Russell Day. His hobbies included fishing, gardening and cooking.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Thursday, October 1, 2009 at Badger Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Lloyd Day and Rev. Tommy Dollar. Burial will follow in the Day cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 2:00 PM prior to the service.

Mr. Day is survived by:

One son: Gary Day and wife Susan of West Jefferson

One brother: Herbert Day Jr. of West Jefferson

Five sisters: Louise Hart of Laurel Springs, Shirley McMillian , Wanda Bare & Debbie Price all of Jefferson and Margaret Marsh of Clemmons

One grandson: Jacob Flint Day of West Jefferson, several nieces and nephews

The family will be meeting at Gary’s home in the Buffalo community.

Blanche Helen Clark

Ms. Blanche Helen Clark age 71 of Lansing, NC died Friday, September 25, 2009 at Margate Health and Rehab. Center. Ms. Clark was born January 11, 1938 in Ashe County to the late Arthur and Laura Barker Clark. In addition to her parents she was also preceded in death by two brothers; Earl and Eugene Clark and one sister; Ethel Miller. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday, September 30, 2009 at Badger Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Lloyd Day, Minister Danny Miller and Rev. J. B. Hamm. Burial will follow in the Miller cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:00 – 11:00 AM prior to the service.

Special friend: Wayne Richardson of Lansing

Wiley "R. C." Farrington

Mr. Wiley Richard Farrington, better known as R. C., age 73 of Wilkesboro, NC died Tuesday, September 15, 2009 at Valley Nursing Center. Mr. Farrington was born May 7, 1936 in Ashe County to the late Everett and Francis Lambert Farrington. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by his wife Joyce Farrington.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, September 18, 2009 at Roans Creek Primitive Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 PM Thursday, Sept. 17th at Badger Funeral Home.

Mr. Farrington is survived by;

1 Son: Scott Farrington and wife Jessica of San Diego, CA

2 Daughters: Tracy Freed of San Diego, CA & Kim Gragg and husband Jim, of Boone, NC

2 Sisters: Joann Walker and husband Bobby of Wilkesboro, NC & Lorane Bare and husband Richard of Jefferson, NC

2 grandchildren 1 great-grandchild, several nieces, nephews and cousins

Joshua Paul McCoy

Mr. Joshua Paul McCoy age 19 of Creston died Friday, September 11, 2009 at his home. Joshua was born in Watauga County on November 7, 1989 to John and Barbara Handy McCoy. He loved to play his guitar, hunt and fish. He worked along side his father as a carpenter assistant. He attended Big Laurel Mennonite Church and was active in community and church outreach projects. He was passionate about helping other people. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, John T. McCoy, Sr. and great-grandmother Pearl McCoy.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, September 13, 2009 at 3pm at Big Laurel Mennonite Church by Rev. Clayton Handy, Rev. David Lyalls and Rev. Kirby Herman. Burial will follow in the McCoy Family cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 2:00-3:00pm Sunday prior the service at the church.

Mr. McCoy is survived by, his parents: John & Barbara McCoy of the home, maternal grandparents, Clayton & Eula Handy of Hayes, NC, paternal grandmother, Margaret McCoy of Creston, fiancée, Criston Woods, several aunts, uncles and cousins also survive.

The family request no flowers please memorials may be made to the Big Laurel Mennonite Church Youth or Ashe Really Cares.

Jerry "Chris" Maye

Mr. Jerry Christopher Maye, better know as Chris age 38 of Whitetop, VA,

died Monday, August 31, 2009 at Bristol Regional Medical Center. Chris was born August 25, 1971 in Ashe County to William and Kathy Reedy Maye. He attended Sturgills Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather: Dewey Reedy and paternal grandparents: Billy and Thelma Maye.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, September 4, 2009 at Badger Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Lloyd Day, Rev. Dennis Eller and Rev. Dusty Reedy.

Burial will follow in the Cornith Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 PM Thursday, Sept. 3rd at Badger Funeral Home.
