Maggie Brooks Segraves

Mrs. Maggie Lee Brooks Segraves, age 84, of Warrensville, NC died Friday, July 17, 2009 at her son’s home in Ennice, NC. Mrs. Segraves was born February 28, 1925 in Ashe County to the late John and Hattie Ham Brooks. In addition to her parents she was also preceded in death by her husband, Worth Segraves.

Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 PM Monday, July 20, 2009 at Badger Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Bennie Roten.

Mrs. Segraves is survived by:

Six sons: John Calvin Segraves and wife Ollie of West Jefferson, Phil Segraves and wife Pat of Laurel Springs, Lee Segraves and wife Cara Lee of West Jefferson, Steve Segraves and wife Linda of West Jefferson, Roy Dean Segraves and wife Debbie of Warrensville, Roger Ivan Segraves and wife Mary of Ennice, NC

Three Daughters: Brenda Simmons and husband Doug of Lansing, Carole Davis and husband Ralph of Deep Gap, and Patricia Blevins and husband Jim of Creston

Two sisters: Beleva Richardson of Newton, NC and Danish Richardson of Lansing, NC

Two Brothers: Lake Brooks of Helton and John Thomas Brooks, Jr. of Bristol, TN.

Several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Patricia Sjoquist Ware

Mrs. Patricia Ann Sjoquist Ware, age 74 of Miller’s Creek, NC died Tuesday, July 21, 2009 at her home. Mrs. Ware was born June 27, 1935 in Bemidji, MN to the late Oscar and Lucille Sjoquist. She was a member of the Ashe Piecemakers Quilt Guild and past president of the Women’s Club at St. Francis of Assisi. In addition to her parents she was also preceded in death by a son, Christopher P. Ware.

Mrs. Ware was a graduate of Virginia Intermont College and later attended Hoffstra College in Long Island. She and her husband raised their six children in Framingham, MA where they resided for 19 years. In Framingham, she was a Town Meeting Member, active with the League of Women Voters, and President of Sodality at St. Bridget’s Parrish. The Wares then moved to North Stonington, CT where Mrs. Ware was a member of the Planning & Zoning Committee.

Funeral mass will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, July 25, 2009 at St. Francis Catholic Church by Father Joseph Dinh. The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 PM Friday, July 24th at Badger Funeral Home.

3 sons: Michael Ware and wife Beth of Westfield, MA, Timothy Ware and his wife Jennifer & Matthew Ware and his wife Cherie all of Plano, TX.

2 daughters: Kathleen Brown and husband Bucky of Franklin, MA & Tracy Feldman and husband Jay of East Lyme, CT.

Daughter in law: Judy Ware of Colchester, CT

16 grandchildren

James Brown

Mr. James Watson Brown, age 59 of West Jefferson, died Thursday, July 23, 2009 at Alleghany Care and Rehab Center. Mr. Brown was born October 12, 1949 in Ashe County to Austin and Rosa Osborne Brown. He was preceded in death by his mother, and two brothers: Roy and Billy Brown.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Monday, July 27, 2009 at Badger Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Jim Greer. The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 2:00 PM prior to the service.

Mr. Brown is survived by;

Dallas Simmons

Mr. Dallas W. Simmons age 92 of Segraves Care Center formally of Delaware, died Friday, July 24, 2009 at Segraves Care Center. Mr. Simmons was born in Watauga County, NC to the late Thomas Jefferson and Effie Cleo Greene Simmons. Dallas enjoyed watching baseball on the television, and loved to give gifts to any children he saw. He was a member of Mcquidel Pentecostal church in Delaware.

A Memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 1, 2009 at 2pm at Badger Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Michael Lea and Rev. Ken Morris.

The family will receive friends from 1-2pm prior to the service Saturday at Badger Funeral Home.

Mr. Simmons is survived by, three brothers, James Simmons of Delaware, Kenneth Simmons of Granite Falls, NC and Carl Simmons of West Jefferson, one sister, Willis Blackburn of Delaware, several nieces and nephews also survive.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Segraves Care Center, 200 Hospital Ave., Jefferson, NC 28640.

The family will be meeting at the home of Carl and Mary Simmons at 57 Glenn Drive in West Jefferson.

Richard Charles "Dickie" Tedder

Mr. Richard Charles Tedder better known as “Dickie” age 63 of Lansing died Monday, July 27, 2009 at Ashe Memorial Hospital. Mr. Tedder was born in Elkton, MD on March 29, 1946 to the late Charles Ray Tedder and Nellie Keene Tedder. Dickie loved to play music, fish, carpentry and his church family. He attended Ashe County Worship Center in West Jefferson. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and will be missed by all.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 30, 2009 at 1:00pm at the Ashe County worship Center by Pastor Chuck Call, Rev. Joey McClure and Preacher Bill Miller. Burial will follow in the Perry cemetery in the Helton community. Mr. Tedder will lie in state one hour prior to the service at the church. The family will receive friends from 6-8pm Wednesday, July 27, 2009 at Badger Funeral Home.

Mr. Tedder is survived by, his wife, Diane Richardson Tedder, three daughters, Tina Burch and husband Carl of N. Myrtle Beach, SC, Tammy Girtman and husband Ron of Jefferson, Teresa Fink of Glendale Springs, one son, Chris Fink of Lansing, his mother and step father, Nellie Tedder Harrington and Henry Harrington of Statesville, one brother, Danny Tedder and wife Linda of Warrensville, 11 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Aulsie Stidhams Miller

Mrs. Aulsie Stidhams Miller age 89 of Lansing, NC died Wednesday, August 5, 2009 at her home. Mrs. Miller was born July 27, 1920 in Ashe County to the late Jessie and Rosa Richardson Stidhams. In addition to her parents she was also preceded in death by her husband, William Worth Miller and daughter Ilean Miller. She was a loving mother who never stopped caring for her children. She loved quilting, canning and raising her children.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, August 8, 2009 at Badger Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Lloyd Day. Burial will follow in the Pennington cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:00 – 2:00 PM prior to the service.

Mrs. Miller is survived by:

5 sons: Earl and Michael Miller both of Lansing, Robert Miller of Warrensville, Verrnie Miller of Whitetop, VA and Kenneth Miller of Toughkennon, PA

7 daughters: Tina Blevins, Debbie Miller, Betty Ellis and Theresa Miller all of Lansing, Myrlean Hufford of West Grove, PA, Brenda Eller of Mouth of Wilson, VA and Elizabeth Miller of West Jefferson

1 sister: Tressie Blevins of MD

18 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Mr. P. J. Eller, better known as Pete, age 76 of Jefferson, NC died Sunday, August 9, 2009 at Ashe Memorial Hospital. Mr. Eller was born March 19, 1933 in Ashe County to the late Ben and Susie Childers Eller. He was a member of Bristol Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, August 12, 2009 at 2:00 PM at Badger Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Billy Joe Blevins. Burial will follow in the Jefferson cemetery with military rites. The family will receive friends from 6:00 -9:00 PM Tuesday, August 11th at Badger Funeral Home.

Mr. Eller is survived by;

1 Son: Peter Lenn Eller and wife Betty of Jefferson

1 Daughter: Susan Day and husband Gary of West Jefferson

Mae Stanley Smith Morrison

Mrs. Mae Smith Morrison age 95 of Jefferson died Thursday, August 13, 2009 at her home. She was a member of Nathan’s Creek United Methodist Church. She enjoyed gardening, walking and cooking for her family. She worked as a sales clerk for Belks Department Store and later for McNeil’s Department Store in West Jefferson. She loved to send time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, August 16, 2009 at 2pm at Nathan’s Creek United Methodist Church by Rev. Rob Brooks. Burial will follow in the Senter Primitive Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1-2pm prior to the service at the Nathan’s Creek United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Morrison is survived by, one son, Jerry Page Smith of Jefferson, one brother, Bobby Stanley of Jefferson, three grandchildren, Jackie Johnson and husband Mike, Susan Trianosky and husband Paul, Lesa Smith, two great-grandchildren, Tina Steffey and husband Adam, Ryan Smith and wife Annie and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Homer Roten

Mr. Homer Allen Roten age 64 of Glendale Springs died Friday, August 14, 2009 at Ashe Memorial Hospital. Mr. Roten was born in Wilkes County on June 22, 1945. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fieldon and Flossie Roten, his brothers, Herman Roten, Howard Roten, sisters, Bobbie Roten, and Billie Jean Miller. Mr. Roten was a member of Calvary Free Will Baptist Church of Glendale Springs. Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 17, 2009 at 2:00pm at Calvary Free Will Baptist Church by Rev. Sonny Thomas, Rev. Dayton Roten and Rev. Eric Miller. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00pm Sunday, August 16, 2009 at Badger Funeral Home.

Mr. Roten is survived by, his wife, Barbara Severt Roten, two sons, Barry Roten & wife Tammy of West Jefferson, Adam Roten and wife Lisa of Glendale Springs, two daughters, Lisa R. Howell of Glendale Springs, Brenda Wagner & husband Neal of West Jefferson, one brother, Robert Dale Roten of Glendale Springs, four sisters, Hallie Bell of Wilkesboro, Helen Snyder, Louella Staley and Faye Roten all of Glendale Springs, 8 grandchildren, Rebecca Holman, Deanna Wagner, Nichole Wagner, Chris Roten, Jada Roten, Brent Roten, Ella Hartzog, Clayton Hartzog, 2 great-grandchildren, Destiny and Jacob Holman, several nieces and nephews also survive.

Robert Benjamin Cornett

Robert Benjamin Cornett, age 80, of West Jefferson, NC died Saturday, August 15, 2009 at Watauga Medical Center. Mr. Cornett was born July 2, 1929 in Washington County, VA to the late Benjamin and Joyce Stamper Cornett. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by a brother: Joseph Cornett and a sister: Betty Jolley. Mr. Cornett loved to spend time with his grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday, August 19, 2009 at Badger Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Sonny Thomas. Burial will follow in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6:30 – 8:30 PM Tuesday, August 18th at Badger Funeral Home.

Mr. Cornett is survived by his wife: Bessie Brooks Cornett of the home

Two daughters: Diana Craven and husband Steve and Donna Harless and husband Kenny all of West Jefferson

Four grandchildren: Kendra and Keaton Craven and Kelsey and Kayla Spears

The family will be meeting at the home of Kenny and Donna Harless
