Dorothy Miller Patrick
Mrs. Dorothy Miller Patrick widow of the late Wert Howell age 83 of West Jefferson died Saturday, March 14, 2009 at Watauga Medical Center in Boone.
Dorothy was born in Ashe County on November 9, 1926 to the late Ellis and Laura Phillips Miller. In addition to her parents and second husband she was preceded in death by her first husband, Clifford Harley Patrick and two grandsons.
Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, March 17, 2009 at 11:00am at Badger Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in the Patrick cemetery.The family will receive friends from 10-11am Tuesday prior to the service at Badger Funeral Home.Mrs. Patrick is survived by, two sons, Marshall and Robert Patrick of West Jefferson, two daughters, Flossie Day of West Jefferson, Arvie "Venie" Houck of Fleetwood, one brother, Gaither Miller of Wilbar, NC, 6 grandchildren, Marvin Day, Alvin Day, Roger Houck, James Patrick, Angie Patrick, Audrey Patrick, 7 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.Flowers are accepted or memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society c/o Lisa Bottomley, 87 Montview Drive, Sparta, NC 28675.

Don Miller
Mr. Don Miller age 85 of Glendale Springs, NC died Thursday, March 12, 2009 at Watauga Medical Center in Boone. Mr. Miller was born January 3, 1924 in Ashe County to the late George and Sallie Cox Miller. He attended Glendale Springs Baptist Church. He was a WWII POW. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by his wife, Lizzie Sheets Miller, 1 grandson, 4 brothers and 1 sister.Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday, March 15, 2009 at the Glendale Springs Baptist Church by Rev. Amos Combs and Rev. Russell Sheets. Mr. Miller will lie in state 1 hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in the George Miller cemetery with military rites. The family will receive friends from 7:00 – 9:00 PM Saturday, March 14th at Badger Funeral Home.

Paul Blevins
Mr. Paul Jones Blevins Sr. age 84 of West Jefferson, NC died Tuesday, March 10, 2009 at Ashe Memorial Hospital. Mr. Blevins was born July 25, 1924 in Ashe County to the late Arthur and Lela Massey Blevins. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by one brother: Robert Blevins and two sisters: Violet Blevins and Mary Oliver.
Mr. Blevins was a member of Landmark Baptist Church. He was a retired truck driver with over forty years of service. He enjoyed CB and ham radio operation.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 12, 2009 at 2:00 PM at Badger Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Tommy Wurth and Rev. Charles McCoy. Burial will follow in the Blevins Family cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:00 – 2:00 PM prior to the service.

Michael Edward Ashbaugh
1940-2009
Michael Edward Ashbaugh, 68, of West Jefferson, NC died Saturday, March 6, 2009 at his beloved mountain home.
He was born September 8, 1940 in Dover, Ohio to the late Florence Lightel Ashbaugh and Henry Franklin Ashbaugh. He served in the United States Air Force from 1961 to 1965. He was a member of the Harrison Masonic Lodge, The Tuscarawas Chapter 164 Order of the Eastern Star where he served as Worthy Patron three years, and the New Philadelphia Chapter 122 Order of the Eastern Star.
He had retired to the mountains of North Carolina in 1992 after 26 years with General Telephone of Ohio. Once in North Carolina he enjoyed working for Gamble Oil, spending time in the mountains watching the wildlife, and creating treasure for family and friends in his wood-working shop.
Surviving are his wife of 48 years Judie A. (Lynn) Ashbaugh; a daughter Lynn (Ashbaugh) Young and husband Robert B. Young of Raleigh, NC; a son Robert Michael Ashbaugh of Tivoli, NY; three grandsons Danny Quarels and his mother Frankie Tikva of Uhrichville, OH, Justin Young of Raleigh, NC, and Robbie Ashbaugh of Tivoli, NY; a brother Patrick Ashbaugh of El Paso, TX; a niece Rachel Ashbaugh and nephew Eric Ashbaugh of New Philadelphia.
He was preceded in death by two brothers James and Timothy Ashbaugh.
The family will receive friends Monday, March 9 from 4:00-5:00 in the fellowship hall at Bethany Methodist Church in West Jefferson, NC. Reverend Lewis Poag will lead a service celebrating Michael’s life at 5:00pm. Inurnment at Evergreen Burial Park in New Philadelphia, OH will follow on Thursday, March 12 after services at Linn, Hert, Geib Funeral Home.

Wrenn Sharpe Mangum
Mrs. Wrenn Sharpe Mangum age 64 of West Jefferson, NC died Monday, March 2, 2009 at her home. Wrenn was born October 10, 1944 in Iredell County to the late John and Lela Shook Sharpe. Mrs. Mangum retired from the faculty of the North Carolina School of the Deaf where she also served as a private tutor. In her retirement years she relocated in Ashe County with her late husband, The Rev. Maynard Mangum. She was an active member of the West Jefferson United Methodist Church serving as a member of Worship Committee, and the WJUMC Chancel Choir. She was the director of the WJUMC Vacation Bible School and was currently serving as a teacher of the elementary Sunday School Class. She was active in the development of the West Jefferson United Methodist Church Kid’s Club. In addition to her church work, she was an active member of the Ashe County Humane Society. In addition to five cousins and a host of friends, she is survived by her beloved faithful canine companions, Jessie and Max.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, March 11, 2009 at 11:30 AM at West Jefferson United Methodist Church with Rev. Kirk McNeill officiating. Inurnment will follow in the church’s columbarium.
A gathering of friends will be from 10:30-11:30AM prior to the service at West Jefferson United Methodist Church Hensley Hall.

Mr. Cecil Ray Barker, age 64 of Lenoir died Tuesday, March 3, 2009 at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care. Mr. Barker was born July 5, 1944 in Ashe county to the late Roger and Alva Sifford Barker. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by three brothers: Richard, Joseph and Wayne Barker; two sisters: Marion Keller and Delma Church.
Graveside services will be held on Sunday, March 8, 2009 at 2 PM at the Barker Family cemetery by Rev. Thomas Stuart

Sonja Moseley
Miss Sonja Diane Moseley age 23 of Laurel Springs, died Monday, March 2, 2009 at NC Baptist Hospital. Miss Moseley was born January 2, 1986 in Forsyth County to Donald Mosely and Catrinia Absher Moseley Chapman. She was preceded in death by her father. Sonja attended Faith Chapel Baptist Church. She loved God and enjoyed life to it’s fullest.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, March 6, 2009 at Badger Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Roger Blevins. The family will receive friends from

Mr. Roger Lee Shaw age 58 of Hudson, NC died Friday, February 27, 2009 at the Brockford Inn Assisted Living Center. Mr. Shaw was born August 23, 1950 in Ashe County to the late Cam and Ethel Eldreth Shaw. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by brothers and sisters: Joe Shaw, Edward Shaw, Arlen Shaw and Geneva Davis.

Mrs. Barbara Ann Kovac, age 86 of West Jefferson, died Wednesday, February 25, 2009 at Ashe Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Kovac was born June 21, 1922 in Clearfield, PA to the late Joseph and Mary Matsko. In addition to her parents she was also preceded in death by her husband, John Kovac.

Mr. John Henry Pennington, age 76 of Crumpler, NC died Wednesday, February 25, 2009 at his home. Mr. Pennington was born February 27, 1932 in Ashe County to the late Everett and Martha Greer Pennington.
