Clarence D. Pergerson

HENDERSON — Clarence David “Perk” Pergerson, 80, of 834 Foster Road Extension, Henderson, died Saturday, June 10, 2000 in Duke University Hospital in Durham.
A native of Franklin County, he was the son of the late Joe Davis and Rosa Minchew Pergerson. He was the widower of Violet Carde Pergerson.
Mr. Pergerson was a retired department manager with Roses Stores Inc., where he was employed for thirty two years. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2:00 p.m., in Flowers Funeral Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Frank Sossamon. Burial, with military honors, will follow in Sunset Gardens.
Surviving are a son, Donald David Pergerson, and wife, Elizabeth, of Henderson; five sisters, Jeanette Dickerson, Ann Weisner, and Maxell Harris, all of Henderson, Ferebee Affrunti, of Buffalo, New York, and Dorothy Teal, of Eustis, Florida; and a brother, Andrew Pergerson, of Henderson. He was preceded in death by a sister, Rosa Lee Russell; and two brothers, Joe Pergerson, and Norman Pergerson.
The family will receive friends this evening, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m., at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home of Donald and Elizabeth Pergerson, 834 Foster Road Extension, Henderson.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Jimmy Helderman, Thad Hedrick, Mike Sandarelli, Mike Choplin, Dwayne Pendergrass, Rodney Inscoe, Kenneth Pendergrass, Dwight Pendergrass, and Tommy Pace.
Flowers Funeral Home is in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Ned Ayscue

HENDERSON — Ned Ayscue, 80, of 1311 Old Norlina Road, Henderson, died Saturday, June 10, 2000, at the University of North Carolina Hospitals in Chapel Hill. He was a native of Franklin County and the son of the late Baldy and Clara Mosley Ayscue.
He was a former minister and a retired plumbing, heating, and air-conditioning contractor. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and was a member of Trinity Church of the Living God, where he was a deacon and Sunday school teacher.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today at Trinity Church of the Living God, conducted by the Rev. Willard Faucette. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Harris Ayscue; two daughters, Faye Roberson and Margaret Perkins; a son, Roger Dale Ayscue; a sister, Frances Griffin; a brother, Greenwood Ayscue, all of Henderson; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
The family received friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home, 1311 Old Norlina Road.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Todd Roberson, Mark Tillotson, James Pope, Allen Pope, J.W. Rhodes, Al Harp, Keith Boyd and Herman Franklin.
Flowers will be accepted.
Arrangements are by Flowers Funeral Home of Henderson.

Bertha M. Landis

CREEDMOOR — Bertha Mangum Landis, 101, of 2689 Horseshoe Road, died Friday, June 9, 2000, at her residence.
She was a member of Rock Spring Baptist Church. In 1984, UNC-TV filmed a documentary entitled “The Singing Stream” that chronicled the history of the Landis family.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Rock Spring Baptist Church. Burial will be in the Landis family cemetery.
Surviving are three daughters, Doshie Winston of Creedmoor, Jessie Tharrington of Apex and Priscilla Daniel, of the home; six sons, Zenas Landis of Hampton, Va., Iverson Landis of Akron, Ohio, King Landis of the home, Andrew Landis of Franklinton, John Landis and Claude Landis, both of Creedmoor; two sisters, Olivia Smith and Emma Gupton, both of Hampton, Va.; two brothers, Luther Mangum of Detroit, Mich., and Emmitt Mangum of Creedmoor; 27 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive visitors from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Wright Funeral Home in Oxford.
Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home of Oxford.

Herbert M. Clark

HENDERSON — Herbert M. Clark, 87, formerly of Henderson, died Saturday, June 10, 2000, at Treyburn Convalescent & Rehabilitation Center in Durham.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Wright Funeral Chapel in Henderson. Burial will be in the Clark family cemetery.
There are no immediate survivors. Viewing will be held at 9 a.m. Monday at Wright Funeral Home in Henderson.
Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home of Henderson.

Lizzie H. Black

OXFORD — Lizzie Hawley Black, 82, of 2081 Enon Road, died Sunday, June 11, 2000, at her residence.
She was a member of New Hope Granville Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at New Hope Granville Baptist Church by the Rev. Garland Heggie. Burial will be in Meadowview Memorial Park.
Surviving are four daughters, Mary Hinton of Raleigh, Barbara Puryear of Oxford, Gloria Booker of Yonkers, N.Y., and Mamie Lumpkin of Durham; two sons, Bobby Black of Oxford and Andrew Black of Butner; 16 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive visitors from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Wright Funeral Home.
Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home.

Ida P. Kittrell

OXFORD — Ida Pearl Kittrell, 71, of 515 Granville St., died Monday, June 12, 2000, at her residence.
Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home.

Richard E. Murrill Jr.

OXFORD — Richard E. Murrill Jr., 85, formerly of 217 Hillside Drive, died Monday, June 12, 2000, at Raleigh Community Hospital. He was a North Hampton County native and the son of the late Jesse and Richard E. Murrill Sr.
He was a member of the Oxford Baptist Church, having sung in the choir for many years and was a retired insurance agent at Eakes Funeral Home for 35 years.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Elmwood cemetery by Dr. Steve Bolton.
He is survived by his wife, Elouise Hobgood Murrill.
Visitation will be conducted from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Eakes Funeral Home of Oxford prior to the graveside services.
Arrangements are by Eakes Funeral Home of Oxford.

Coley L. Rigsbee Jr.

HENDERSON — Coley Leonard Rigsbee, Jr., age 77, a resident of 226 Pollyanna Road, died Monday morning at his home. He was a native of Durham and was the son of the late Coley Leonard and Julia Hackney Rigsbee, and was the widower of Alice North Rigsbee.
He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Navy, and was a Baptist. He was retired from Liggett-Myers Tobacco Co.
He is survived by his wife, Eleanor Percy Rigsbee, of the home; two sons, Aubrey
Rigsbee of Durham, and Russell Rigsbee, of Independence, Virginia; two step-daughters, Gail Wilson-Paige, of Atlanta, Ga. and Patsy Wilson Roberts of Stratford, Texas; one step-son, Rick Wilson, of Durham; one sister, Peggy Harris, of Durham; four brothers, Bill Rigsbee of Chapel Hill, Wayne Rigsbee of Louisburg, Jimmy Rigsbee of Kernesville, and Richard Rigsbee of Greensboro; eight grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.
No funeral services are planned at this time.
Arrangements are being handled by the J.M. White Funeral Home.

Evie W. Russell

BUTNER — Evie Welch Russell, 87, of 302-28th St., Butner, died Monday, June 13, 2000, at Granville Medical Center.
She was a Person County native, the daughter of the late Henry and Emma Denny Welch and the widow of A.C. Russell.
She was a member of Concord Baptist Church and was retired from Murdoch Center.
Funeral services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday at Eakes Funeral Chapel in Creedmoor by the Rev. Dale Wallace. Burial will be in Carolina Memorial Gardens.
Surviving are two daughters, Bonnie R. Rogers of Cary and Charlotte R. Barnard of Durham; two brothers, Ernest Welch of Timberlake and Hulon Welch of Rougemont; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Concord Baptist Church or to one’s favorite charity.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Eakes Funeral Home in Creedmoor prior to the funeral services and at other times at the home on Thursday.
Arrangements are by Eakes Funeral Home of Oxford.

Thurman C. Bailey

CALIFORNIA — Thurman C. Bailey, 66, of 29 Palms, Calif., died Monday, June 12, 2000, at his home. He was the son of the late Richard and Ina P. Bailey of Henderson.
Surviving are his wife, Virginia Bailey of the home; one daughter, Denise Solomon of Salt Lake, Utah; one son, Randy Bailey of 29 Palms, Calif.; two grandchildren; four sisters, Sally B. Ellington of Raleigh, Myrtis B. Strickland and Ruth B. Edwards, both of Henderson and Diane Williams of West End.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete.

Douglas M. McLeod

LAURINBURG — Douglas M. McLeod, 80, of 1132 South Caledonia Road, died Sunday, June 11, 2000, at the V.A. Medical Center in Fayetteville. He was the widower of Gennie McLeod.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday at Greenfield Baptist Church in Creedmoor by the Rev. Richard E. Jackson. Burial with military rites will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are one stepson, James L. McKeithan of Durham; and two sisters, Rachel France of New York City and Dorothy Cushenberry of Henderson.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Morris Funeral Home in Laurinburg.
Local arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home.

Mary Brodie

WAKE FOREST — Mary Jane Baker Brodie, 74, of 316 E. Pine Ave., died Saturday, June 10, 2000, at Raleigh Community Hospital in Raleigh. She was a Wake County native and the daughter of the late Frederick and Wille Neal Baker.
Funeral services will be conducted at 12 p.m. today at Olive Branch Baptist Church in Wake Forest. Burial will follow in the Pine Forest Memorial Gardens in Wake Forest.
The family received friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Feggins-Feggins Chapel in Wake Forest.
Surviving are her husband, Joseph Brodie of the home; two sons, Clarence Brodie of Franklinton and Lawrence Brodie of the home; four daughters, Joycelynn Brodie of Raleigh, Marilyn Brodie of Wake Forest, Patricia Brodie of the home, and Leslie Brodie of Wilmington; three sisters Christine Congo of Philadelphia, Pa. Rachel Jeffreys of Kittrell and Jean Smith of Fayetteville; and six grandchildren.
Arrangements are by Feggins-Feggins Funeral Service Inc.

Ida Scott

OXFORD — Ida Pearl Hawley Kittrell Scott, 71, of 515 Granville St., died Monday, June 12, 2000, at her residence.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Wright Funeral Home. Burial will be in Meadowview Memorial Park.
Surviving are two sons, Larry J. Kittrell of Oxford and Charles E. Kittrell Jr. of Lanham, Md.; one sister, Flora Wright-Brown of Peekskill, N.Y.; one brother, McKinley Hawley of Gastonia; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at Wright Funeral Home.
Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home Inc.

Loretta F. Johnson

WARRENTON — Loretta Fogg Johnson, 40, of Warrenton, died Saturday, June 10, 2000, at her residence.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Spring Green Missionary Baptist Church in Warrenton. The Rev. C.D. Wardrett will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are two daughters, Sherrika Fogg of Warrenton and Jaleesa Fogg of the home; one son, DeAndre Fogg of the home; two grandchildren; her parents, Bennie and Beulah Fogg of the home; one sister, Crystal Fogg of the home; and three brothers, George Fogg Sr. and Daniel Fogg, both of Warrenton, and Bennie Fogg Jr. of Vaughan.
The body will be on view today until taken to the church to lie in state one hour before the services.
Arrangements are by Boyd’s Funeral Services of Warrenton.

Evelyn O. Robinson

WINTER PARK, FLA. — Evelyn O. Robinson, 71, of Shadyhill Terrace Winter Park, died Sunday, June 11, 2000. She was a native of Sumrall, Miss.
She was of the Baptist faith and a homemaker. She moved to Central Florida in 1982 from Biloxi, Miss.
Graveside services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. today at Glen Haven Memorial Park in Winter Park, Fla.
Surviving are her husband, Theodore R. Robinson of Winter Park, Fla.; one son, Danny S. Robinson of Oviedo, Fla.; one sister, Mildred O. Pearson of Gulfport, Miss.; one brother, James Harold Osborne of Marshall, Texas; and two grandchildren.
Arrangements are by Baldwin-Fairchild Goldenrod-Winter Park Chapel of Winter Park, Fla.

Annie A. Hicks

HENDERSON — Annie Lee Ayscue Hicks, age 89, a former resident of the Cokesbury Community died Wednesday morning at Franklin Regional Medical Center in Louisburg. She was the daughter of the late William Henry and Ida Carroll Ayscue, and was the widow of Albert Fenner Hicks.
She was a member of the Shocco United Methodist Church and the Women's Society Of Christian Service.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 4 p.m. in the J.M. White Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. John M. Hackworth. Burial will follow in the Shocco United Methodist Church cemetery.
She is survived by one son, William T. “Bill” Hicks, of Burlington; two daughters, Christine H. Dickerson, of Henderson, and Gladys H. Westbrook of Spartanburg, S.C.; four sisters, Gracie Abbott, Ovie Hicks, Ida Belle Mustian, and Beatrice Thompson, all of Henderson; nine grandchildren, and 12 great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Thursday night from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at 1203 Chestnut Street.
Serving as active pallbearers will be grandsons.
Arrangements are by the J.M. White Funeral Home.

Howell A. Nelson

HENDERSON — Howell Allen Nelson, 57, of 334 Southall Street, Henderson, died Thursday, June 15, 2000 at his home.
A native of Vance County, he was the son of Arleen Reid Nelson, of the home, and the late Bailey Allen Nelson.
Mr. Nelson was the retired owner and operator of the former Nelson’s Florist of Henderson. He was a Summa Cum Laude graduate of North Carolina Central University with a Master’s Degree in English.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, at 11 a.m., in Flowers Funeral Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Frank Sossamon. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
Surviving, in addition to his mother, are two sisters, Carolyn N. Hughes, and husband, Edward, of Henderson, and Cathy N. Smith, and husband, Wayne, of Durham; a brother, Jerry R. Nelson, and wife, Teresa, of Wilson; an uncle, Harold Lee Reid, of Henderson; three nieces, Courtney Smith Bryant, Jennifer Nelson, and Jessica Nelson; and four nephews, Tony Hughes, Jimmy Hughes, Hodge Smith, and Jason Nelson.
The family will receive friends this evening, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m., at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home on 334 Southall Street.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Ronnie Lassiter, Danny Lassiter, Denny Ray Peoples, Bruce Harp, Donald Reid, Joseph Johnson, Hodge Smith, Jason Nelson and Joseph Reid.
Flowers Funeral Home is in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Tashawn W. Lester

OXFORD — Baby Tashawn Waddell Lester, four months old, of 915 Highview Church Road, Roxboro, died Thursday, June 15, 2000.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Vernon Hill Baptist Church in Person County.
Viewing will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at Betts & Son Funeral Home.

Alfred T. Smith Jr.

HENDERSON — Alfred Titus Smith Jr., 48, of 320 Woodsworth Road, died Thursday, June 15, 2000, in the Veteran Administration Hospital in Durham following a lengthy illness.
He was a native of Mecklenburg County, Va., and the son of Alfred T. Smith Sr. and the late Bernice Smith.
At an early age, he joined the Cedar Grove Baptist Church in Clarksville, Va., where he attended until his health failed. He was a 1969 graduate of West End High School in Virginia and was a member of Townsville Lodge No. 488. He was employed with Variety Wholesale before retiring. He served in the U.S. Army from 1971 to 1974 with an honorable discharge.
Surviving are his father, Alfred T. Smith Sr.; two daughters, Tangynika Smith and Nikki Latisha Smith; two sisters, Lucinda Royster and Brenda Cambell; and one brother, James Smith.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at Cedar Grove Baptist Church in Clarksville, Va., with the Rev. Dan Terry officiating, assisted by the Rev. Larry Hargrove, Elder Emmitt Terry and Rev. Cornelius Ogburn. Interment will military honors will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at E.C. Terry’s Funeral Service and other times at the home.
Pallbearers will be Marvin Smith, George Harris, Taft Stewart, Walter Terry, Roosevelt Terry, Thomas Terry, Jimmy Terry, James Fisher, and Thurman Smith. Floralbearers will be Cedar Grove Church Missionaries.
Arrangements are by E.C. Terry’s Funeral Service.
