WARRENTON -- Willis Minor, of San Marcos, Texas, died Saturday, June 17, 2000.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at the Los Angeles Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Riggan Family cemetery at Mt. View in Embro.
Arrangements are by Blaylock Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Harold M. Renn

HENDERSON — Harold McCoy Renn, 68, of 475 Epsom-Rocky Ford Road, Henderson, in the Epsom community, died Thursday, June 22, 2000 at his home.
A native of Franklin County, he was the son of the late Channie Alridge and Carmen Tharrington Renn.
Mr. Renn was a farmer, and a warehouseman for Alston’s Tobacco Warehouse in Henderson and Western Avenue Tobacco Warehouse in Knoxville, Tennessee. He was a member of Liberty Vance United Church of Christ, where he was a deacon. He was a former professional baseball player, and was a charter member of the Epsom Volunteer Fire Department.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, at 11:00 a.m., in Liberty Vance United Church of Christ, conducted by the Rev. John R. Yevak, and the Rev. Tammy Ayscue. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Shelby Harris Renn; two sons, Jonathan M. Renn, and Christopher A. Renn, both of Epsom; two sisters, Eris R. Lindsay, of Burlington, and Betsy R. Edwards, of Louisburg; three brothers, W.J. Renn, Alridge A. Renn, and Ronald T. Renn, all of Epsom; and three grandchildren, Kristen Renn, Leah Renn, and Channie Renn.
The family will receive friends tonight, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home.
Serving as active pallbearers will be David Renn, Walter Renn, Rick Lindsay, Tim Lindsay, Mike Ayscue, Randy Kearney, Wayne Renn, James Rowland, and David Smith. Honorary pallbearers will be the Men’s Fellowship of Liberty Vance United Church of Christ.
Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to Liberty Vance United Church of Christ, c/o Joyce Ayscue, 199 Epsom-Rocky Ford Road, Henderson, N.C. 27536.
Flowers Funeral Home is in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Bettie Minkins

GREENSBORO — Bettie Mae Ellis Minkins, 59, of 3701, Apt. 2-B, Morris Farm Drive, Greensboro, died Wednesday, June 21, 2000, at the Wesley Long Community Hospital in Greensboro. She was a Vance County native and the daughter of Edward A. Ellis and Ruth Henderson Burwell. She was the widow of James Arthur Minkins III.
She attended the Vance County Public Schools and she was also active in several organizations and the band at the former Henderson Institute.
She attended the University of Buffalo in New York. At an early age, she became a member of St. James Baptist Church where she was an anointed pianist and devoted choir member. As an adult, she was a committed member of Shiloh Baptist Church of Henderson where she served as church secretary, Sunday school teacher and choir member.
Upon moving to Greensboro, she became a member of Evangel Fellowship COGIC where she was a member of the women’s choir. She was employed in North Carolina and Virginia in the area of Mental Health and Rehabilitation as a certified nursing assistant.
Funeral services will be conducted at 4 p.m. Saturday at St. James Baptist Church by the Rev. Joann Allen, Otis Lockett Sr., pastor of Evangel Fellowship COGIC in Greensboro and Elder Mike Lewis, of Evangel Fellowship COGIC in Greensboro. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are one son, Andre Minkins of Greensboro; one daughter, Andrea Minkins of Greensboro; her mother, Ruth Henderson Burwell of Henderson; three brothers, Edward Ellis of Chicago, Ill., Joseph Ellis of Henderson and Arthur Ellis of College Park, Ga.; two sisters, Geraldine Batchelor of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Gloria Cawthon of Woodbridge, Va.; and one grandchild.
The family will receive friends at 213 S. Bullock St., Henderson, and also from 7 to 8 p.m. today in Garnes Funeral Chapel.

David Bobbitt

HENDERSON — David Bobbitt, 43, of 120 Red Bud Drive, died Thursday, June 22, 2000, at U.N.C. Hospital.
Memorial services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Greater Little Zion Church of America by the Rev. J.L. Giles.
Surviving are a wife, Renee’ Bobbitt; his mother, Ada Hayes Bobbitt of Henderson; two daughters, Kesha Bobbitt and Stacey Bobbitt, both of Henderson; two sons, Antawn Bobbitt and Vic Gulati, both of Henderson; two sisters, Jannie Lewis of Warrenton and Wanda Alston of Louisburg; three brothers, Ricky Bobbitt of Creedmoor, Barry Bobbitt of Henderson and John Bobbitt of Atlanta, Ga.; and three grandchildren.
Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home of Henderson.

James Perry

WARRENTON — James Perry, 75, of Perrytown community, Warrenton, died Thursday, June 22, 2000, at his residence. Arrangements will be announced by Boyd’s Funeral Services of Warrenton.

Minnie P. Allen

HENDERSON — Minnie Pridgen Allen, 72, of 202 Harrison Ave., died Thursday, June 22, 2000, at Duke University Medical Center. Arrangements will be announced by Flowers Funeral Home of Henderson.

Ellen J. Alexander

WISE — Ellen J. Alexander, 104, of Toledo, Ohio, formerly of Wise, died Tuesday, June 20, 2000, in Toledo, Ohio.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Locust Grove Baptist Church in Wise. The Rev. James M. Johnson, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are five daughters, Cleo Harris, Naomi Johnson, both of Wise, Mozell Hill, Margaret Crouch, Juanita Jones, of Toledo, Ohio; four sons, Parrie Alexander, Milo Alexander, of Wise, William Alexander, James Alexander, of Toledo, Ohio; 42 grandchildren; 86 great-grandchildren; and 20 great-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive relatives and friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Boyd’s Funeral Service of Warrenton.

Evelyn W. Cifers

OXFORD — Evelyn Wheeley Cifers, 63, of 2187 Smith Road, died Thursday, June 22, 2000, at Durham Regional Hospital. She was a Durham County native and the daughter of the late Arnold M. and Dorothy Duncan Wheeley.
She was a member of Tally Ho First Baptist Church and was a homemaker. She was first married to Walter Riley who died in 1989.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Tally Ho First Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert Oliver officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Surviving are her husband, James L. Cifers; two daughters, Janet Riley Owen of Oxford, Nancy Ann Thorpe of Ownesboro, Ky.; four sisters, Shirley May Morris of Raleigh, Delinda Machado of Franklinton, Eunice Marie Ligon and Judy Elaine Walls, both of Stem; three brothers, Davie A. Wheeley of Creedmoor, Wayne C. Wheeley of Virginia Beach, Va., Ronnie Lee Wheeley of Henderson; and four grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Eakes Funeral Home in Oxford and at other times at the home.

Susie B. Hargrove

HENDERSON — Susie Bell Hargrove, 87, of 229 Lincoln St., died Tuesday, June 20, 2000, at the Senior Citizens Home Inc. of Henderson. She was a Vance County native and the daughter of the late Tommy and Liza Hargrove. She was the widow of Elijah Hargrove Sr.
She was a member of Woodsworth Baptist Church for 79 years, where the funeral services will be conducted at 12 p.m. Saturday by the Rev. Lawrence Harrison. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are two sons, Elijah Hargrove Jr. and Samuel “Buddy” Jefferson; one sister, Fannie Thomas of Henderson; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the home.
Arrangements are by Garnes Funeral Services Inc.

Roosevelt Coleman

HENDERSON — Roosevelt Coleman died Wednesday, June 21, 2000, at Maria Parham Hospital.
Arrangements will be announced later by Garnes Funeral Services Inc.

Alanders A. Burrell Jr.

HENDERSON — Alanders Antwon Burrell Jr., infant son of Alanders Sr. and LaDonna Stokes Burrell, died Monday, June 19, 2000, at Nash General Hospital in Rocky Mount.
Graveside services will be conducted at 3 p.m. today at Jesse Kittrell Memorial cemetery in Kittrell by Bishop Willie Griffin.
Surviving, in addition to his parents, are his grandparents, Fredrick and Alma Stokes of Eatonton, Ga., and Samuel and Gloria Burrell of Henderson.

Virginia S. Lowery

Raleigh ? Mrs. Virginia Dare Stainback Lowery, age 90, a former resident of Glennwood Towers in Raleigh, died Wednesday night at Britthaven Nursing Home of Raleigh. She was a native of Pitt Co. and was the daughter of the late Earnest and Mary Carroll Stainback. She was a retired employee of Walgreen-Kerr Drug Store and was a member of the New Bethel Baptist Church in Epsom.
Graveside services will held Saturday at 11:00 AM at the New Bethel Baptist Church cemetery by the Rev. Jim Curtis.
She is survived by one sister Mamie Ruth Stainback Kearney of Raleigh., and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive Saturday morning from 10:00 until 10:45 at the New Bethel Baptist Church Fellowship Hall.
J.M. White Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Minnie P. Allen

HENDERSON — Mrs. Minnie Pridgen Allen, 72, of 202 Harrison Avenue, Henderson, died Thursday, June 22, 2000 in Duke University Hospital in Durham.
A native of Vance County, she was the daughter of the late John Lee and Minda Holmes Pridgen.
Mrs. Allen was employed by Southern Quilters Inc. for thirty three years. She was a lifelong member of City Road Uinted Methodist Church, where she faithfully served in all aspects. She was Lay Person of the Year for the Durham District. Active in the Durham District United Methodist Women, she was an Assistant Lay Leader. A certified Lay Speaker, she spoke in many churches throughout the area. She touched many peoples’ lives.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, at 3:00 p.m., in City Road United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Danielle Kirkland. Burial will follow in Elmwood cemetery.
Surviving are her husband, Terry Thurman Allen; two sons, Terry L. Allen, and wife, Martha, of Roxboro, and Tom Allen, of Henderson; two grandsons, Tate Allen, and Mark Allen; a niece, Minda Tedesco; and three nephews, Dennis Pridgen, Edward Pridgen and Mitchell Pridgen.
The family will receive friends today, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m., at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Buddy Aldrich, Alan Daniel, Brian Daniel, Alan Jessup, Butch Pridgen, Dennis Pridgen, Edward Pridgen, and Joe Tedesco.
Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to City Road United Methodist Church, c/o Mrs. Allene Brummitt, P.O. Box 1212, Henderson, N.C. 27536.
Flowers Funeral Home is in charge of the funeral arrangements.

David L. Bobbitt Jr.

VANCE COUNTY — David Lee “Luke” Bobbitt, Jr. was born April 12, 1957 to the parentage of David L. Bobbitt and Ida Hayes Bobbitt in Vance County, North Carolina. He entered eternal life Wednesday, June 21, 2000 at UNC Hospital, Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
He attended Vance County Public Schools and was a retired employee of Food Lion Inc. He was owner and operator of Bobbitt and Son Lawn Care Service. He was a member of Greater Little Zion Church of America where he served on the Board of Deacons. He worked diligently to provide meals and he ministered to the community of the Flint Hill community.
Rev. J.L. Giles will conduct a memorial service Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at Greater Little Zion Church of America.
He leaves to cherish his memory, a devoted wife, Renee Gulati Bobbitt; three daugters, Shakina Fields (Glenn), Durham, NC, Krishna Bobbitt, and Stacey Bobbitt, Henderson, NC; one son, David Antwoin Bobbitt, Henderson, NC; one stepdaughter, Andrea Cooper (Bill), Atlanta, GA; one stepson, Vic Gulati, of the home; his father, David L. Bobbitt (Mary), Durham, NC; his mother, Ada Hayes Bobbitt, Henderson, NC; two sisters, Wanda Bobbitt Alston (Bobby), Louisburg, NC, and Jannie Bobbitt Lewis (Melvin), Warrenton, NC; three brothers, Ricky Bobbitt, Creedmoor, NC, John Bobbitt (Kim), Atlanta, GA, and Barry Bobbitt (Jean), Henderson, NC; a maternal grandmother, Ada Hayes, Henderson, NC; a sister-in-law, Wanda Roberson, Flushings Queens, NY; six grandchildren, Billy, Xauier, Quadavius, Lauren, Seion, and Tau; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home of Henderson.

HENDERSON — Lillian Williams Tunstall Cheek, 68, of 70 Morris Wilson Road, died Friday, June 23, 2000, at Maria Parham Hospital.

MARYLAND — Albert Wynn died Tuesday, June 20, 2000, in Maryland.
Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday. Burial will follow in the Wynn’s Funeral cemetery.

Samuel Mayfield

WISE — Samuel Mayfield, of Wise, died Friday, June 23, 2000, at his home.

Mittie C. Higgs

VANCE COUNTY — Mittie C. Hicks Higgs, 69, formerly of Vance County, died Thursday, June 22, 2000, in Newark, N.J. She was the daughter of the late Elmo and Georgia Daye Hicks.
Arrangements will be announced later by E.C. Terrys Funeral Service.

James Perry

WARRENTON — James Perry, 75, of the Perrytown community, Warrenton, died Thursday, June 22, 2000, at his residence.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at United Solid Rock Faith Ministries in Warrenton by the Rev. Moore H. Bynum, pastor. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Leona Allen Perry of the home; two daughters, Beulah White of Durham and Doris Constantine of Baldwin, N.Y.; four sons, James Virgil Perry J. of Newport News, Va., Ronald Perry of Warrenton, Michael Perry of Henderson and Larry Perry of the home; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one brother, Alfred Banks of Vacaville, Calif.
The body will be on view today at Boyd’s Funeral Service, Warrenton until taken to the church one hour prior to the service.
Arrangements are by Boyd’s Funeral Services of Warrenton.

Roosevelt Coleman

HENDERSON — Roosevelt Coleman, 60, of 3368 Raleigh Road, Lot 10, died Wednesday, June 21, 2000, at Maria Parham Hospital. He was a Vance County native and the son of the late John and Mary Davis Coleman Harris Terry.
He was educated in the Vance County Public School System and was an employee with S.G. Hayes farm for 38 years. He was also a former employee of the J.P. Taylor Co. for many years.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Monday at Young Memorial United Holy Church by Elder Tyler Young, Elder Lucy Waverly and Elder Walter Young. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are two daughters, Phyllis Coleman and Gloria Jean Coleman, both of Henderson; one son, Brian Coleman of the home; two sisters, Mary D. Coleman of Henderson and Rebecca Toler of Richmond, Va.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the home.
Pallbearers will be friends of the family.
Floralbearers will be Sabrina Holden, Mamie Holden, Mary Watson, Shirley Jones, Elizabeth Bullock and Constance Drumgold.
Arrangements are by Garnes Funeral Services Inc.

Lillian Cheek

HENDERSON — Lillian Williams Tunstall Cheek, 68, of 70 Morris Wilson Road, died Friday, June 23, 2000, at Maria Parham Hospital. She was a Vance County to the late Peter Samuel and Dorothy Wilson Williams.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Michael Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. Hugene Fields. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are three daughters, Earljean Williams, Lillian Dorthea Cheek and Ardelia Tunstall, all of Henderson; three sons, James T. Tunstall, George L. Tunstall and Ronnie Tunstall, all of Henderson; one brother, Peter S. Williams Jr. of Henderson; four sisters, Ruth Heggie of Stovall, Alma Smith of Oxford, Shirley Waller of Warren County, Gearldine Williams of Henderson; 20 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren; stepmother, Louvenia Wimbush; one stepdaughter; and four stepsons.
The body will be on view one hour at the church before the service.
Arrangements are by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service.
