Lawrence E. Brown Jr.

NEW BRITAIN, CONN. — Lawrence E. Brown Jr., 57, died Friday, June 28, 2000, in New Britain, Conn. He was a Vance County native and the son of Varah Brown and the late Lawrence E. Brown Sr.
He was a graduate of Henderson Institute and attended Kittrell Junior College and received a B.S. degree from Elizabeth City State University. He attended classes at East Carolina and was a veteran of the United States Army.
He taught school in Enfield and was an assistant principal at Enfield High School. He later moved to Connecticut and worked at the Veteran Hospital in New Britain, Conn.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Holy Temple United Holy Church by the Rev. Roosevelt Alston. Burial will follow in the St. John Baptist Church cemetery.
Surviving are his mother, Varah Brown of Henderson; one daughter, Yovette Brown of West Palm Beach, Fla.; two sisters, Alma Brown of New Britain, Conn., and Stephanie Brown of Henderson; three brothers, Elmus Brown, Larry Brown and Vernon Brown, all of Henderson.
The family will receive friends at his mother’s residence, 601 East Rock Spring St.
Arrangements are by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service.

Jennie Williams

HENDERSON — Jennie Cheek Fogg Williams, 91, of 855 Foster Road, died Saturday, July 1, 2000, at her residence. She was the daughter of the late Hilliard and Martha Hayes Cheek and a Warren County native.
She was educated in the Warren County public schools. Early in life, she joined the Hecks Grove Baptist Church and later joined the Mitchell Baptist Church where funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday by the Revs. Daniel W. Lilly Jr. and Sidney Dunston. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
Surviving are five daughters, Martha Foster of Franklin County, Jennie F. Debose of Petersburg, Va., Mamie Ragland of Henderson, Mary Diggs of Milwaukee, Wisc., and Dorothy Williams of the home; two sons, William Fogg of Petersburg, Va., and Eddie Williams of Henderson; a sister, Elnora Nile of Henderson; 23 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and 16 great-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the home. Viewing will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Garnes Funeral Chapel.
Pallbearers will be John Henry Foster, Fountaine Ragland, Eddie Williams Jr., William Tony Fogg, Michael Debose, Vincent Ragland, John Eric Hayes, Stacey Williams, Carl Nile and Corey Foster.
Arrangements are by Garnes Funeral Services Inc.

Mary Durant

HENDERSON — Mary Helen Davis Durant, 93, of 70 Barham Lane, died Sunday, July 2, 2000, at Britthaven Nursing Care.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Arrangements will be announced later by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service.

Mary Mayo

RIDGEWAY — Mary Mayo, of Ridgeway, died Monday, July 3, 2000, at her residence.
Arrangements will be announced later by R.H. Greene Funeral Home of Warrenton.

F. Michael Jones

HENDERSON — Frederick Michael “Mike” Jones, 48, of 1606 Shepherds Glade Drive, Apex, died Sunday, July 2, 2000, at Halifax Memorial Hospital in Roanoke Rapids. He was a native of Vance County and the son of Frederick L. Jones, of Henderson, and the late Virginia Dennis Jones.
He was vice president of Retail Centralized Underwriting at First Citizens Bank in Raleigh, where he was employed for 20 years. He was a member of North Henderson Baptist Church.
Memorial services will be conducted at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Flowers Funeral Chapel by the Rev. John Hines Adams Sr.
Surviving, in addition to his father, are four sisters, Phyllis Jones, Lynn J. Parham, and Janice J. Stroud, all of Henderson, and Sandra J. Smith of Roanoke Rapids; and his maternal grandmother, Ava Dennis, of Henderson.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at his father’s home, 1206 Anne St., Henderson.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, c/o Doug Byrom, Centura Bank, P.O. Drawer 1069, Henderson, N.C. 27536, or to the North Carolina Diabetic Association, Diabetic Center, P.O. Box 3277, c/o Duke Medical Center, Durham, N.C. 27707.
Arrangements are by Flowers Funeral Home.

Bessie Downey

OXFORD — Bessie Mae John Green Downey, 75, of 710 Goshen St., died Friday, June 30, 2000, at her residence.
She was a member of Holy Temple COGIC Church where she was a missionary, Sunday school teacher and an alternate.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Holy Temple COGIC Church by Elder James Williams. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Surviving are four daughters, Lois Howard of Jersey City, N.J., Pauline Downey of Montclair, N.J., Patricia Ann Downey of Oxford, and Eugenia D. Dove of Selma; three sons, James N. Downey Jr., William Henry Downey and Graham Ellis Downey, all of Durham; three sisters, Hannah Mitchell of Stem, Beatrice Thorpe, and Hallie Downey, both of Butner; two brothers, John Henry Green of Stanford, Conn., and Samuel Green of Waterbury, Conn.; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
The family will receive visitors from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Wright Funeral Home.

Jancice N. Britt

HENDERSON — Janice Kay Noling Britt, age 48, a resident of 2129 Francis Avenue, died Tuesday, July 4, 2000, at her home.
She was a native of Vandalia, Ill., and was the daughter of the late William and Marie Holtcamp Noling.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. in the J.M. White Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. George Williams. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
She is survived by her husband, Billy J. Grimsley, of the home; one daughter, Kathryn Moran, of Hackett, Arkansas; one son, David William Crone, of Kittrell; one sister, Vicki N. Buzzard, of Brownstown, Illinois, and two grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Wednesday night from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home at 2129 Francis Avenue.
Arrangements are by the J. M. White Funeral Home.

Virginia S. Holt

OXFORD — Virginia Slaughter Holt, 72, of 107 Park Ave., died Thursday, June 29, 2000, at her home. She was a native of Wayne County, Mich., and the daughter of the late James Nathaniel and Isabelle Thornton Slaughter.
She was of the Baptist faith and retired as a lab technician from Michigan State University.
Memorial services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Eakes Funeral Chapel in Oxford by the Rev. Lemar Wheeler. She will be interred in Detroit at a later date.
Surviving are two daughters, Kathryn Holt and Kristin Holt, both of Sebastopol, Calif.; and two sons, Ken Holt of LaGrange, Ky., and Keith Holt of Vicksburg, Mich.
Arrangements are by Eakes Funeral Home of Oxford.

Maggie D. Blackwell

OXFORD — Maggie Downey Blackwell, 101, of 9033 Robert Morgan Road, died Wednesday, July 5, 2000, at Granville Medical Center.
Arrangements will be announced later by Betts & Son Funeral Home.

Roena K. Houston

HENDERSON — Roena Kearney Houston, 71, of 704 Daniel St., died Saturday, July 1, 2000, in Brooklyn, N.Y.
The family will be at the home.
Arrangements will be announced later by Garnes Funeral Services Inc.

Lena A. Jackson

HENDERSON — Lena Ayscue Jackson, age 83, a former resident of 508 S. Cooper Drive, died Wednesday afternoon at Maria Parham Hospital. Arrangements will be announced later by the J.M. White Funeral Home.

Mary A. Jones

OXFORD — Mary Alice Jones, 53, of 102 Gill St., died Tuesday, July 4, 2000, at her residence.
She was a member of St. Peter’s United Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Wright Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Donnie Jones. Burial will be in Meadowview Memorial Park.
Surviving are three daughters, Kemberly Jones, Robynette Jones and Marla W. Jones, all of Oxford; her mother, Wilhemina Overby Parham of Oxford; and eight grandchildren.
The family will receive visitors from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at Wright Funeral Home.

Olivia W. Lee

WARRENTON — Olivia Williams Lee, 91, of New York, formerly of Warren County, died Friday, June 30, 2000, at Beth Israel North Hospital in New York City.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Greenwood Baptist Church. The Rev. Fred Thorpe will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are one daughter, Virginia Young of New York City; six grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren.
The body will be on view today at Boyd’s Funeral Service until taken to the church one hour before the service.
Arrangements are by Boyd’s Funeral Service of Warrenton.

Tommy L. Oakley

OXFORD — Tommy Lee Oakley, 49, of 5205 Antioch Road, died Wednesday, July 5, 2000, at his residence.
Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home.

Annie J. Perry

FRANKLINTON — Annie Jeffreys Perry, 92, formerly of Hwy. 56, Franklinton, died Monday, July 3, 2000, in Franklin Regional Medical Center in Louisburg. She was a Franklin County native and the daughter of the late Johnnie and Gertrude Horton Jeffreys. She was the widow of Charlie K. Perry Sr.
She was a member of Union View Baptist Church.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Fairview cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Bill Nelson.
Surviving are three daughters, Margaret P. Evans of Ocala, Fla., Sue P. Tant of Franklinton and Deanor P. Pearce of Henderson; two sons, Charlie K. Perry Jr. of Norlina and David L. Perry of Henderson; a sister, Bertha J. Creech of Zebulon; 21 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the cemetery immediately following the service.
Arrangements are by Flowers Funeral Home.

Lucy C. Royster

OXFORD — Lucy Cooper Royster, 54, of 108 Leak St., died Tuesday, July 4, 2000, at her residence.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Wright Funeral Chapel by the Rev. J.D. Ray. Entombment will be in Meadowview Memorial Park.
Surviving are two sons, Eric Barry Cooper of Bloomington, Ill., and Kenneth M. Royster of Henderson; her mother, Sebeirta Cooper of Oxford; four sisters, Lizzie Buie of Durham, Eula Greenwood of Butner, Emma Thornton and Bexie Magalean Cooper, both of Oxford; and six grandchildren.
The family will receive visitors from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Wright Funeral Home.

Christine E. Schwab

CLINTON — for Christine Elizabeth Schwab, 89, of Clinton, died Friday, June 30, 2000, at United Methodist Health Care Center in Clinton. She was a native of Lincoln, Neb., and the daughter of George and Margrete Brehm. She was the widow of Ralph E. Schwab.
In the 1913, the family moved to Oklahoma, settling southwest of Weatherford. In the mid 1930’s, she moved to Clinton. In June of 1944, she married Ralph E. Schwab in Clinton. She worked as a housekeeper and grocery clerk for many years. She attended First United Methodist Church, where she was a member for 60 years.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Larry King officiating. Burial was in the Clinton cemetery under the direction of the Kiesau Funeral Home.
Surviving are her son, Paul A. Schwab of Clinton; three sisters, Ruby Mattera of San Pedro, Calif., Norman Jean Brehm and Betty Stevenson, both of Henderson; two brothers, Leonard Brehm of Sand Springs, Okla., Sam Brehm of Okmulgee, Okla.; and one grandson.
Arrangements are by Kiesau Funeral Home of Clinton, Okla.

Larry Sowell

OXFORD — Larry Sowell, 90, of Oxford Manor Nursing Center, died Friday, June 30, 2000.
Surviving are one son, James Sowell of Norristown, Pa.; three daughters, Ethelean Legrande of Philadelphia, Pa., Polly Berry of Norristown, Pa., and Jacqueline Sowell of Jeffersonville, Pa.; and one sister, Eva Mae Barber of Charlotte.
Funeral services will be conducted at 12 p.m. Sunday at Betts Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Herman Royster officiating.
Viewing will be from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
Arrangements are by Betts & Son Funeral Home.

Anna R. Taylor

OXFORD — Anna Royster Taylor, formerly of Oxford, died at the Virginia Medical Center in Newport News, Va.
She was the daughter of the late William Johnson and Jannie Maynor Johnson.
Surviving is one sister, Margaret Downey of Oxford.
Funeral services were conducted on Wednesday at Zion Baptist Church in Newport News, Va.
Local announcement is by Betts & Son Funeral Home.

Delois Cousin

MIDDLEBURG — Delois “Tootsie” Cousin, 49, of Middleburg, died Wednesday, July 5, 2000, at the U.N.C. Hospital in Chapel Hill. She was a Warren County native and the daughter of the late Jake and Dorothy Moss Seward.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Manson Baptist Church by the Revs. C. Davis and William Brodie. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are her husband, Gustavis Cousin Jr. of the home; one daughter, Stephanie Wyche-Williams of Manson; one son, James Seward of Norfolk, Va.; two sisters, Doris Yarborough and Hattie Miles of Henderson; four brothers, Jake Seward, Milton Seward, William Seward and Raymond Seward, all of Henderson; and six grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the home.
Pallbearers and floralbearers will be friends of the family.
Arrangements are by Garnes Funeral Services Inc.
