Maurice Everett Newton

CHAPEL HILL — Maurice Everett Newton was born November 22, 1914 to Josie Moss (Newton) Adcock and Moses Everett Newton in Henderson, N.C. He was the stepson of Brochius Daniel Adcock, whom he loved dearly, of Vance County, from the time he was nine years old. He grew up in Vance County on a dairy farm, owned and operated by his step dad. Married in 1942 to Loretta Sarti of Richmond, VA, he began his career working for the department of public health, going around to schools to serve families in need. After two years as a Major in the Army Dental Corps, he settled in Chapel Hill to replace the only dentist in the community. For several years, well before the days of the UNC dental school, he served the community single handedly, often being called out late at night for emergencies.
Fondly known as “Newt”, he was an unusually kind man who loved his work and his family. As an unspoiled farm boy, he earned his way through Campbell College, Wake Forest University, and the Dental School of the Medical College of Virginia by doing a number of odd jobs, including cutting hair and milking cows. His humble beginnings stayed with him all of his life, as he was known to exchange dental work for a bushel of corn or a huge pumpkin from a farmer’s field.
Dr. Newton practiced dentistry in downtown Chapel Hill for 50 years, until the age of 72, at which time he sold his practice and retire to care for his wife Loretta. In his own quiet and gentle way, Maurice taught everyone he knew about the importance of patience when following your dream, and helping others along your path, even if it means taking longer to get where you are going.
In addition, Dr. Newton found the time to be an active member of the American Dental Association, the N.C. Dental Society, The Durham-Orange County Dental Society, the Triangle Dental Study Club, and was a lifelong member of the Kiwanis Club of Chapel Hill.
Maurice was among the first to build a home in the Greenwood neighborhood, and for years served on the zoning board for that neighborhood, helping to create the lovely, tree-filled environment that it is today. He was also responsible for donating the old slave cabin where Paul Green did much of his writing, to the historical society, who in turn moved it to the botanical gardens where it is open to the public today.
“Newt” will be missed by many. His daughters Nancy Newton Love (and husband Larry Love of Paris, Texas), Beverly (Toby) Newton (of Efland, N.C.) and Maureen Newton (and husband Mark Becker of East Lansing) will remember him with a warm and loving heart. Granchildren Andy Love (married to Anne Marie Love) and Charlotte Love (both of Dallas, TX), Russell and Adam Becker (both of East Lansing) hold many dear memories of playing in his wonderful home and yard in Greenwood, sitting on his knee reading stories, and fishing in his pond. Maurice’s sister, Lucille Williams (formerly of Henderson, now Raleigh), and brother, Fred Newton and his wife Alice Newton (also formerly of Henderson, and now of Greenville, N.C.), plus many nieces and nephews will miss his genuine love and concern for them. His longtime colleague, friend and brother-in-law, Duncan Getsinger, and his wife JoAnn will deeply miss his support and friendship.
May his spirit move gently and peacefully to the other side, where he will greet the loved ones who have gone before him.
A funeral mass will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, July 14, at St. Thomas More Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial cemetery.
A visitation will be Thursday, July 13, from 7 - 9 at Walkers Funeral Home, Chapel Hill.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimers Association, 400 Oberlin Rd., Suite 208, Raleigh, N.C. 27605-1351 or The National Perkinson Foundation, 1501 NW 9th Ave., Miami, FL 33136.
