Harriet R. Dixon

GREENVILLE — Harriet R. Dixon, died Tuesday, July 18, 2000, at P.C.M.H. She was a native of Henderson and the widow of William Dixon.
She graduated from Henderson Institute and furthered her education at Livingston College, earning her master’s degree at Hampton Institute, Hampton, Va. She was employed by the Pitt County School system for 33 years. She was a faithful member of York Memorial AME Zion Church, having served on various boards including the choir and as a Sunday school teacher.
Funeral services were conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at York Memorial AME Zion Church. Entombment followed at Homestead Memorial Gardens.
Surviving are her daughter, Samandra Chavis; six sisters, Kizzie Brown, Elnora O’Hara, Mary Morton and Sophia Ramey, all of Henderson, Sallie Letterlough of Maryland and Olivia Blanding of Plainfield, N.J.; two brothers, Richard Russell and Edward G. Russell, both of Washington, D.C.; three grandchildren.
The family received friends at York Memorial AME Zion Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to be made to The Buds of Promise of York Memorial AME Zion Church, 201 Tyson St., Greenville, NC 27834.
Arrangements are by Phillips Brothers Mortuary.

Edith H. Jackson

FRANKLINTON — Edith Hight Jackson, 82, of 205 N. Hillsborough St., died Saturday, July 22, 2000, at her home. She was the daughter of the late Jewel Hight and Thurston J. Jackson.
She was an educator, having taught at Leggett, Fayetteville, Louisburg and Franklinton High School where she spent most of her career. She was a graduate of Louisburg College, UNC-Greensboro, and UNC-Chapel Hill. She was a member of the Franklinton United Methodist Church.
Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Franklinton United Methodist Church with the Rev. Luis Reinoso, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview cemetery.
She is survived by her brother, William P. Jackson of Marion, Va.
The family received friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at Sandling Funeral Home.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Franklinton United Methodist Church.
Arrangements are by Sandling Funeral Home.

Melissa Jacobs

HENDERSON — Melissa Jacobs, 22, of O’Berry Center, Goldsboro, died Sunday, July 23, 2000, at Wayne Memorial Hospital.
Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home of Henderson.

John H. Stegall Jr.

MACON — John Henry Stegall Jr., 86, of Rt. 1 Box 28, Macon, died Monday, July 24, 2000, at Warren Hills Nursing Center. He was a Warren County native and the son of the late John Henry Stegall Sr., and Irene Fannie Thompson Stegall.
He was a member of Hebron United Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Blaylock Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Greenwood cemetery.
Surviving are one son, Thomas Stegall of Macon; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Blaylock Funeral Home in Warrenton.

James L. Garrett Sr.

OXFORD — James Leonard Garrett Sr., 83, of 137 Webb Place, died Saturday, July 22, 2000, at Vencor Pettigrew Nursing Home in Durham. He was a Mecklenburg County native and the son of the late James H. and Martha Newton Garrett.
He was an Army veteran of World War II, was of the Baptist faith and was a retired farmer.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Eakes Funeral Chapel in Oxford by the Rev. Cecil Newton. Burial will be in Meadowview Memorial Park.
Surviving are his wife, Inez Coley Garrett of the home; a son, James L. Garrett Jr. of Oxford; a sister, Zelma G. Elliott of Oxford; two grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Eakes Funeral Home in Oxford and at other times at 219 Maple Drive, Oxford, N.C. 27565.
Arrangements are by Eakes Funeral Home Inc.

George W. Wright

HENDERSON — George Washington Wright, 72, of 302 Lincoln Ave., died Friday, July 21, 2000, at his residence.
Arrangements are by Garnes Funeral Services Inc.

Anne P. Currin
OXFORD -- Anne Pitts Currin, 78, of 3138 Hwy. 96-S, died Tuesday, July 25, 2000, at Durham Regional Hospital in Durham.
Arrangements will be announced later by Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home in Oxford.

Cleveland Gill

HENDERSON -- Cleveland Gill, 76, of 3545 Gillburg Road, died Monday, July 24, 2000, at Maria Parham Hospital. He was a Franklin County native and the son of the late Joseph and Mary F. Morton Gill.
He attended the Vance County Public Schools and was a veteran of the United States Army.
He was an employee of Burkart from which he retired after 30 years of service.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at St. Mary’s A.M.E. Zion Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Zelma Magbie Gill of the home; nine children, Mary F. Gill and Beatrice B. Gill, both of the home, Mattie M. Hargrove, Josephine Brodie, Zelma A. Kittrell, Carrie Henderson and Delores Paschall, all of Henderson, Mary Thomas of Richmond, Va., Phillip Gill of Durham; one brother, Cornelius Gill of Henderson; two sisters, Mary Gill Grant of Henderson and Eva M. Gill Bryant of Bridgeport, Conn.; 14 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Garnes Funeral Chapel and all other times at the home.
Pallbearers will be nephews.
Floralbearers will be nieces.

William T. Henderson

HENDERSON -- William T. Henderson, died Monday, July 24, 2000, at the V.A. Medical Center in Durham.
Arrangements will be announced later by Garnes Funeral Services Inc.

Melissa Jacobs

HENDERSON -- Melissa Jacobs, 22, of O’Berry Center, Goldsboro, died Sunday, July 23, 2000, at Wayne Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Wright Funeral Home of Henderson by the Rev. Danny Lewis. Burial will be in Elmwood cemetery.
Surviving are her mother, Lucy Jacobs; one brother, Donald Jacobs; one sister, Cassandra Jacobs; and her guardian, Elder Richard Batts, assistant pastor of United Evangelistic Church in Henderson.
No visitation is planned.
Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home of Henderson.

Wendell H. McVey

LIBERTY -- Wendell Howard McVey, 87, of 7962 Sylvan Road, Liberty, died Monday, July 24, 2000, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham after several years of declining health. He was a native of Alamance County and the son of the late Albert McVey and Asenath Williams McVey.
He was retired from Alamance County Schools and was a member of the Cane Creek Friends Meeting.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Cane Creek Friends Meeting by Dale Matthews, pastor. Burial will follow in the Meeting House cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Ava Moon McVey of the home; two daughters, Kay Nethery of Henderson and Sue Ellington of Graham; his half-sister, Elizabeth Bailey of Burlington; and four grandchildren.
The family will be at the Rich & Thompson Funeral Home in Graham from 6 to 8 p.m. today. Other times they will be at the residence. The body will be taken to the church 30 minutes prior to the services.

Lewis Williams

HENDERSON -- Lewis Williams, of the Senior Citizen’s Homes, Inc., died Tuesday, July 25, 2000, at the facility.
Arrangements will be announced later by Garnes Funeral Services Inc.

David N. Yates

CREEDMOOR -- David Neal Yates, 30, of Bridger, Montana, died Monday, July 24, 2000, in Montana.
Arrangements will be announced later by Eakes Funeral Home of Creedmoor.

Anne P. Currin
OXFORD — Anne Pitts Currin, 78, of 3138 Hwy. 96-S, died Tuesday, July 25, 2000, at Durham Regional Hospital in Durham. She was a Granville County native and the daughter of the late Arthur D. and Mary Lee Clay Pitts. She was a member of Banks United Methodist Church, a member of the church choir and a member of the United Women.
Funeral services will be conducted on Friday at Banks United Methodist Church by the Revs. Diane M.C. Blanchard and Frank Bourner. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are her husband, S. Taylor Currin of the home; two daughters, Cheryl S. Currin of Oxford and Pat Gallagher of Oxford; two sisters, Lizzie Lee Foster and Lorraine Pitts Kearney, both of Oxford; one brother, James Madison Pitts of Oxford; and three grandchildren.
Immediately following the services, the family will receive friends in the fellowship hall of Banks United Methodist Church, and other times at the home.
Arrangements are by Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home of Oxford.

William T. Henderson

HENDERSON — William T. Henderson, 53, of 614 Andrew Ave., died Monday, July 24, 2000, at Durham V.A. Hospital. He was a Vance County native and the son of the late Frank and Margaret Williams-Henderson.
He graduated from Henderson Institute, and served three years in the United States Army from 1969-1971.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Garnes Chapel by the Minister Linda Foster. Burial will follow in Blacknall cemetery.
Surviving are his son, Waasim Cook of Burlington; two sisters, Edith McNeil of Richmond, Va., and Annie Battle, also of Richmond, Va.; three brothers, James H. Henderson of Henderson, Milton Henderson of Richmond, Va., and Robert Henderson of Henderson.
The family will receive friends at James Henderson home at 923 Pinkston Street.
Pallbearers will be friends and relatives.
Floralbearers will be friends and relatives.

George W. Rickman Sr.

WILSON — George William Rickman Sr., 78, of Wilson, died Wednesday, July 26, 2000, in Raleigh. He was a native of Waynesville.
He was a World War II veteran, having served with the 30th Infantry Division and in the Pacific with the 5th Army Air Corps Engineers. He was a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, the American Legion and an honorary member of the Old Hickory Association.
He started in Millwork early in life and continued in it all his life. For many years, he designed and handmade custom staircases, including all associated woodcarvings, and was owner of Stairways Unlimited. At the time of his death, he was teaching woodworking and furniture making at Wilson Tech.
Following World War II, he served as Scoutmaster and Sea Scout Skipper, and worked with the Boy Scouts at First Baptist Church of Wilson where he was a member. He later was commander of the Wilson Civil Air Patrol Squadron for 10 years.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Blaylock Funeral Home in Warrenton by the Rev. Tim Short. Burial will follow in Fairview cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Rosa George Rickman; two sons, Michael “Mike” Rickman of the home in Wilson and G.W. “Ricky” Rickman Jr. of Mechanicsville, Va.; one sister, Edna Rickman Haney of Waynesville; and two brothers, Edward R. Rickman of Cumberland, Tenn., and Joseph M. Rickman of Lenox, Mo.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Blaylock Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to the Robert E. Lee Council, Boy Scouts of America, Trust Fund, P.O. Box 6809, Richmond, Va. 23230.

James C. Shelley

NICHOLS, S.C. — James Cleveland Shelley, 79, of Hwy. 917, died Tuesday, July 25, 2000, at his residence. He was a Horry County native and the son of the late James Austin and Johnnie Mishoe Shelley.
He was a board member of Horry County Electric Cooperative for 28 years. He was a member of the Pleasant View Baptist Church, where he was a deacon, a Sunday school director and served on the church property committee. He was a field supervisor of the A.S.C.S. office for many years. He sponsored the Annual Harvest Day Barbeque.
Surviving are his wife, Lacie A. Shelley of Nichols, S.C.; three sons, Rev. James C. Shelley Jr. of Creedmoor, Dr. Dewey Randall Shelley of Timmonsville, S.C., Johnny Myron Shelley of Nichols, S.C.; a brother, Elson Shelley of Nichols, S.C.; five sisters, Nitta Plaisance of Monroe, La., Florence Dohmann of Opelousas, La., Marie Graham of Galivants Ferry, S.C., Janice Morton and Betty Shelley, both of Nichols, S.C.; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Friday at Pleasant View Baptist Church with the Revs. Rick Watson and James C. Shelley Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Meares Funeral Home in Mullins.

WARRENTON — Peter Somerville, 74, of the Parktown community in Warrenton, died Wednesday, July 26, 2000, at his residence.

Dorothy C. Wallace

HENDERSON — Dorothy Chavis Wallace, 61, died in Jersey City, N.J. She was a native of Henderson.
She was a graduate of Henderson Institute and attended Kittrell College.
Funeral services will be conducted at 7 p.m. today at St. John Church in New Jersey. Burial will be in the Rosemount Memorial Park in Newark, N.J.
Surviving are four children; one sister, Vivian Chavis of Richmond, Va.; two brothers, Eddie Chavis and Fredrick Chavis; and eight grandchildren.
Arrangements are by Parker Funeral Home, 37 Clinton Ave., Jersey City, N.J. 07304.
