James T. Richardson Sr.

HENDERSON — James Thomas Richardson Sr., 73, died Thursday, July 27, 2000, at Maria Parham Hospital. He was the son of the late Clorine and Charlie Daniels.
He was educated in Henderson and served in the U.S. Army. He joined Kesler Temple A.M.E. Zion Church at an early age. For many years, he was employed at J.P. Taylor’s Tobacco Factory, while also pursuing a career as an auto mechanic.
He is survived by three daughters, Cassandra R. Burton of Durham, Tanya Davis and Tanika Richardson of Henderson; five sons, J.T. Richardson Jr. and Cleveland Haywood, both of Henderson, Sheldon Richardson of Rocky Mount, Anthony Richardson of Fayetteville, and Haile Richardson of Durham; 26 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Kesler Temple A.M.E. Zion Church. Visitation will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. today at E.C. Terry Funeral Home.

Ophelia H. Pearce

NORLINA — Ophelia Hoyle Pearce, 96, died Saturday, July 29, 2000, at her home on the Old Warrenton Road. She was the widow of Callie Hilliard Pearce.
She was a member of Oak Level Christian Church in Youngsville, the James B. White Chpater of the Eastern Star, Warren County Senior Citizens Club.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Norlina United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the Oak Level Christian Church cemetery in Youngsville at 3:30 p.m.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Blaylock Funeral Home in Warrenton.
Surviving are two daughters, Mildred Thorne of Sharpsburg and E. Doris Coleman of Richmond, Va.; eight sons, Charles H. Pearce, William F. Pearce, both of Richmond, Va., Lawrence F. Pearce of Fayetteville, W.Va., James H. Pearce of Orlando, Fla., Marvin T. Pearce of Cary, Douglas M. Pearce of Largo, Fla., Dwight M. Pearce of Norlina, Callie H. Pearce of Nantucket, Mass.; and amany grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to: Norlina Methodist Church in Norlina and the Masonic Home for Children, 600 College St., Oxford, N.C. 27565.

Nelson Burchette

WARREN COUNTY — Nelson Burchette, of Warren County, died Saturday, July 29, 2000. Arrangements will be announced later by R.H. Greene Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Boney Williams Jr.

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Boney Williams Jr., 45, of Brooklyn, N.Y., formerly of Warren County, died Wednesday, July 26, 2000, at the Coney Island Hospital in Brooklyn, N.Y.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Fork Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Inez. The Rev. Luther Alston Jr., pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are two daughters, Tiffany Williams of South Carolina and Lenora Hufford of Texas; two sons, Antwain Hufford of Texas and Corey Williams of South Carolina; his mother, Dazell Elps of Warrenton; his father, Boney Williams Sr. of Warrenton; his stepmother, Mae Bell Williams of Warrenton; five sisters, Mary L. Davis of Washington, D.C., Ernestine Cheek of Henderson, Clementine Williams of Louisburg, Barbara Richardson and Jeanette Elps, both of Warrenton; three brothers, Bobby Lee Williams of Warrenton, Matthew Williams of Georgia, and Calvin Elps of Manson.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Boyd’s Funeral Services Chapel.

James C. Blackwell
HENDERSON — James Carl “J.C.” Blackwell, age 74, a resident of 142 Belmont Drive, died Saturday night in a local nursing home.
He was a native of Granville County and was the son of the late Clifton Moore and Lillian Hughes Blackwell. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Army. He was a retired shipping manager for CertainTeed.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11:00 A. M. at the Raleigh Road Baptist Church by the Rev. Robert Kelley and the Rev. George Williams. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley Jones Blackwell, of the home; two daughters, Leslie Blackwell of Knightdale and Sherie B. Bender of Raleigh; one sister, Mary Helen B. Parrott of Oxford; two brothers, Billy Blackwell and Bobby Blackwell, both of Oxford, and two grandchildren.
The family received friends Monday night from 7 to 8:30 P.M. at the J. M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home on Belmont Drive.
Serving as active pall bearers will be Jim Ayscue, Neal Gresham, Jon Bender, H. J. Newcomb, Buddy Perry, and and the Rev. George Williams.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Raleigh Road Baptist Church, 3892 Raleigh Road, Henderson, N. C. 27536.

Winnifred E. Hobgood

CREEDMOOR — Winnifred E. Hobgood, 90, of Brian Center Nursing Home, Charlotte, died Monday, July 31, 2000. She was a native of Granville County, Northside community, and the daughter of the late G.G. and Ida M. Sherron Hobgood.
She was educated in Granville County schools. She left Granville County, moving to Minneapolis, Minn., and resided there for approximately 50 years where she made many good friends and was active in several organizations. She retired at age 72, employed by a hardware store as an accountant.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Maplewood cemetery in Durham by the Rev. Donnie Brown.
Surviving are her nephew, Wiley L. “Sonny” Lyon of Charlotte; a niece, Betsy L. Watson of Raleigh and her two children, Logan Watson of Raleigh and Courtney Wilson of Wrightsville Beach.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to one’s favorite charity.
Visitation will be held immediately after the graveside services.
Arrangements are by Eakes Funeral Home of Creedmoor.

Susie M. Crudup

HENDERSON — Susie Mae Crudup, 67, of 1000 Foster Road, died Sunday, July 30, 2000, at her residence. The family will be at the home.

PLAINFIELD, N.J. — Bernice Durham, 60, of Plainfield, N.J., died Monday, July 31, 2000, in Maria Parham Hospital.

Mattie B. Brown

HENDERSON — Mattie Bell Brown, 63, of Guardian Care, died Monday, July 31, 2000, in Maria Parham Hospital.

George E. Howard

HENDERSON — George Ezra Howard, 72, of 413 S. College St., died Sunday, July 30, 2000.
The family will receive friends at the home of Carrie Daye, 518 Flint St.

Nelson Burchette

WARREN COUNTY — Nelson Burchette, 36, of Warren County, died Saturday, July 29, 2000.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Burchette Chapel United Church of Christ. The Rev. Charlie Leath, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Gwendolyn Parham Burchette of the home; his parents, Nelson and Dorothy Burchette of Ridgeway; six sisters, Jerlene Miller of Soul City, Darnice Lyons of Franklinton, Elaine Plummer of Richmond, Va., Dorothy Ransom of Yonkers, N.Y., Lucy Burchette of Warrenton, and Mary Ann Rudd of Warrenton; and four brothers, Stanley Burchette of Henderson, Conrad Burchette of Warrenton, Henry Jerman of Oine, and George Jerman of Springfield, Conn.
Arrangements are by R.H. Greene Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Malvern E. Norwood

TOWNSVILLE — Malvern Epps Norwood, 90, formerly of 790 Rockspring Church Road, died Monday, July 31, 2000, at Granville Medical Center in Oxford. He was a Vance County native and the son of the late Edward C. and Mollie Yancey Norwood.
He was a retired farmer. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was a lifelong member of Tabernacle United Methodist Church.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Tabernacle United Methodist Church cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Joyce Day.
He is survived by a brother, John Yancey Norwood Sr. of Lynchburg, Va.
The family will receive friends at the home on 790 Rockspring Church Road, Townsville.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Tabernacle United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 100, Townsville, N.C. 27584, attn: Sylvia Anderson.
Arrangements are by Flowers Funeral Home of Henderson.

Virgie A. Hanford

HENDERSON — Virgie Mae Allen “Bobbie” Hanford, 78, of 559 Murphy Road, Henderson, died Sunday, July 30, 2000, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham.
She was a native of Blackstone, Va., she was the daughter of the late Dewey and Mabel Taylor Allen.
She was a homemaker and a member of North Henderson Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Flowers Funeral Chapel, conducted by the Rev. J. Hines Adams Sr. Burial will follow in Elmwood cemetery.
Surviving are her husband, Robert Julius Hanford Sr.; a daughter, Sonja J. Norsworthy of New Bern; two sons, Jerry L. Hanford of Henderson and Robert J. Hanford Jr. of Norfolk, Va.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. tonight at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Smutt Ross, Jimmy Harrison, Dewey Faulkner, William Faulkner, Joe Don Robertson, Mike Fischer, David Collins and Bill Lovin.
Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to North Henderson Baptist Church, 1211 North Garnett St., Henderson, N.C. 27536.

OXFORD — Alverta Cooper, 80, of 205 Howard Drive, died Sunday, July 30, 2000, at the U.N.C. Hospital in Chapel Hill.

Randolph Bumpass
OXFORD — Randolph Bumpass, 52, of Baltimore, Md., died Wednesday, July 26, 2000. He was a Granville County native and the son of Mary R. Bumpass and the late Alvin Bumpass.
Funeral services were held Monday in Baltimore, Md.
Local announcements are by Betts & Son Funeral Home.

Alverta Coope

OXFORD — Alverta Coope, 80, of 205 Howard Drive, died Sunday, July 30, 2000.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Whetstone Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Viewing will be from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. today at Betts & Son Funeral Home.

Lillie B. Moore

OXFORD — Lillie B. Moore, 64, of 411 Cedar St., died Monday, July 31, 2000.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Mountain Spring Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Viewing will be from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday at Betts & Son Funeral Home.

Grace G. Journigan

FRANKLINTON — Grace Grossom Journigan, 92, of 6546 Hwy. 56, died Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2000, in Britthaven Nursing Center. She was the widow of Earlie Journigan.
She was a homemaker and a member of Perrys Chapel Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday at Perrys Baptist Church with the Rev. Rob Kantner officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Surviving are two sons, Earlie Journigan Jr. of the home and R.J. Journigan of Franklinton; one daughter, Betty Jean Collier of Asheboro; 13 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Sandling Funeral Home.

Josie Elliott

HEMINGWAY LAKE, MICH. — Josie “Betty” Elliott, 71, died Sunday, July 30, 2000. She was the daughter of Oscar and Zelma Hedgepeth. She was a native of Kittrell.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles. She married Thomas P. Elliott on Dec. 5, 1964, in the Canton township.
Surviving are her husband, Thomas Elliott of Hemingway Lake, Mich.; her children, Patricia Elliott of Otter Lake, Mich., Joseph Elliott of Dearborn, Mich., John Elliott of Maybee, Mich., Donald Elliott of Burton Mich., Linda Wark of Evart, Mich., Randy Elliott of Ferndale, Mich., Lori Baltusis of Waterford, Mich., Rhonda Presson of Howell, Mich., Denise LeBlanc of Roseville, Mich., Thomas A. Elliott of Columbiaville, Mich.; 28 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; siblings, Rosa Byrdshaw of Alabama, Ann Overton, Betty Lee Boone, Ruby Gupton, Tom Hedgepeth and Charles Hedgepeth, all of North Carolina.
Visitation was held from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday and 2 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today at Muir Brothers Funeral Home, Lapeer. Pastor Peter DeKlerk will officiate. Burial will follow in West Deerfield cemetery, North Branch.

Fannie M. Terryl

HENDERSON — Fannie Mae Terryl, of 410 East Winder St., died Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2000, at her residence.The family will receive friends at the residence. Arrangements will be announced later by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service.

Wade A. Ayscue

HENDERSON — Wade Autry Ayscue, age 61, a resident of Murdock Center in Butner, N.C., died Monday night at Durham Regional Medical Center. He was a native of Vance County and was the son of Helen Ayscue Collier of the Vicksboro Community.
Graveside services will be held Wednesday at 11:00 A. M. in the Ayscue Family cemetery at Vicksboro. Officiating will be the Rev. Dale Eatmon and the Rev. Willis Herman.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by six half-brothers and four half-sisters.
Arrangements are by the J. M. White Funeral Home.

Geneva L. Pendergrass

Henderson — On the morning of Tuesday, August 1, 2000, Geneva Lewis Pendergrass, entered Eternal rest. Born to Earl Lee Lewis, Sr. and wife, Anna Barker Lewis on March 9, 1925 in Copperhill, Tennessee. She married and moved to Henderson, N. C. on June 8, 1945, and was wed to T. J. Pendergrass until his death on January 31, 1986. Their union produced four daughters and one son, Trudy Wilson and husband Larry, Judy Stokes and husband, Linwood , Linda Robertson and husband, the Rev. Danny Robertson, Geneva Weaver and husband Donnie and Thurston Julius and wife Melba all of Henderson.
Further blessed with nine grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Sue Barker of Henderson and Juanita Welch of McCayesville, Georgia. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Earl Lewis, Jr., James Lewis, Charlie Lewis, and Steve Lewis.
Her life was dedicated to her family and her church. Converted to the Holiness faith in 1952, she was a member of the South Henderson Church Of God until her recent transfer to Freedom Life Church Of God.
The family will receive friends Wednesday night from 7:00 until 8:30 P. M. at the J. M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at her home at 1227 Indiana Avenue, off the Old Epsom Road.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11:00 A. M. at the Freedom Life Church Of God. Officiating will be the Rev. Jeff Prewer and the Rev. Richard Thomas. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
Serving as active pall bearers will be Warren Thomas, Dale Franklin, Morris Franklin, Tony Pendergrass, Leland Pendergrass, David Pendergrass, and Vernon Pendergrass.
Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to Friends Of Hospice, P. O Box 2596, Henderson, N. C. 27536.
Arrangements are by the J. M. White Funeral Home.

Addie Durham

HENDERSON — Addie Bernice Yarborough Durham, 59, of Kenilworth, N.J., formerly of Vance County, died Monday, July 31, 2000, at Maria Parham Hospital. She was the daughter of the late James “Mike” Yarborough and Addie Reid Yarborough.
She was the widow of Samuel Maurice Durham.
She was a member of St. John Baptist Church of Middleburg where the funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday by the Rev. Roy Jones. Burial will follow in the Middleburg cemetery.
Surviving are a daughter, Karen P. Durham of Kenilworth, N.J.; 10 sisters, Dedis Y. Bailey, Eunice Y. Allen, LaVerne Y. Bullock, Harriette Y. Bullock and Gracie Yarborough, all of Middleburg, Nellie Yarborough and Ferebee Yarborough of New York, N.Y., Mary Y. Yancey and Juanita Y. Reid, both of Henderson, and Peggy Yarborough of Arlington, Va.; three brothers, James R. Yarborough and June E. Yarborough of Middleburg, and George Yarborough of Kittrell; a grandmother, Isabella T. Yarborough of Henderson; and one granddaughter.
The family will receive friends at the Yarborough home, 325 Clements Road, Middleburg.
Pallbearers will be George Yarborough, June Yarborough, Moses Bullock Jr., Edward Outz, James Boyd, Greg Hargrove, and Phillip Reid Jr. Floralbearers will be Tammy Glasco, Adrienne Fudge-Edwards, Rhonda Yarborough, Dena Yarborough, Willie Mae Y. Sharpe, Johnnie Mae Durham, Kelly B. Jefferys, Amy B. Taylor and Juwanna Boyd.
Arrangements are by Garnes Funeral Services Inc.
