Charles E. Henderson
HENDERSON — Charles Edward Henderson, 46, of 557 Spring St., died Friday, Aug. 4, 2000, at his residence after a period of declining health. He was the son of Laura Overby Henderson and the late Linwood E. Henderson.
He was educated in the Granville County Public Schools and was employed with Harriett and Henderson Yarns for many years. He was more commonly known as “cornbread”.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. today at Nutbush Baptist Church by the Rev. Stanley M. Henderson Sr. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
Surviving are a daughter, Evita Marrow of Charleston, W.Va.; five sisters, Gloria Daniels, Mary Jefferson and Frances Allen, all of Henderson, Thelma Henderson of Oxford and Lucie Henderson of Patterson, N.J.; four brothers, Willie and Linwood Henderson of Henderson, Joe and Minister Stanley M. Henderson Sr. of Tampa, Fla.
Pallbearers will be Mac Cheek, John Daniels, Haywood Cheek, Bobby Cheek, Eugene Hicks and John Henderson.

Mary N. Royster
HENDERSON — Mary Neathery Royster, 87, of 130 West Young St., Henderson, died Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000, at her home. She was a Vance County native and the daughter of the late Joseph M. and Bessie Moss Neathery and the widow of George W. Royster.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Henderson and was retired from Singer Company.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Eakes Funeral Chapel by the Rev. John Phillips. Burial will be in Elmwood cemetery in Oxford.
Surviving are a daughter, Betsy Royster Favorite of Jacksonville, Fla.; a sister, Kathryn N. Davenport of Chester, Va.; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Wednesday prior to the funeral at Eakes Funeral Home and at other times at 130 W. Young St., Henderson, N.C. 27536.
Charles E. Watkins
OXFORD — Charles Edward “Eddie” Watkins, 38, of 412 Cherry St., died Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000, at Granville Medical Center. He was a Vance County native and the son of Thomas and Mary Frances Strum Watkins.
He was a member of Peaces Chapel Baptist Church, a graduate of South Granville High School and an employee of Hannaford Brothers of Butner.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Chapel by the Revs. Larry Zacky and Gary Brummitt and Dr. Jim W. Whitehead. Burial will follow in Peaces Chapel Baptist Church cemetery.
Surviving, in addition to his parents, are his wife, Vickie Sadler Watkins of the home; daughter, Dayna S. Watkins of the home; sons, Thomas Lance Watkins and Nolan E. Watkins, both of the home; brothers, R. Graig Watkins and Jeff Watkins, both of Oxford.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home and at other times at the home of Compton & Blanche Sadler, 205 Fairview Drive, Oxford.

Robert F. Watkins Sr.
HENDERSON — Robert Fleming “Dick” Watkins, Sr., 66, of 422 Lightwood Lane, Henderson, died Sunday, August 6, 2000, at his home.
Born in Warren County, he was the son of Agnes Harris Watkins Deady, of Henderson, and the late Samuel B. Watkins, Sr.
Mr. Watkins was a retired twenty year employee of the U.S. Post Office in Henderson, and was a retired veteran of the U.S. Navy, with twenty two years service. He was a member of Carey Baptist Church, where he was a former Deacon, and was a past president of the B.D. Adcock Sunday School Class.
He was a member of the Henderson Masonic Lodge No. 229 AF&AM, a member of the Amran Shrine Temple, a member and Past Imminent Commander of the York Rite Bodies, a member and Past President of the Henderson Shrine Club, a member and Past Master of the Bland Ford Butte Council No. 10 Allied Masonic Degrees.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, at 11 a.m., in Flowers Funeral Chapel, conducted by the Rev. John Hackworth. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife, Thelma Satterwhite Watkins; a daughter, Regina L. Watkins, of Henderson; a son, Robert F. “Dickie” Watkins Jr., of Henderson; four sisters, Ferbee W. Reavis, Eleanor W. Robinson, and Ellen W. Chandler, all of Henderson, and Betty Jean W. Pegram, of South Hill, Va.; two brothers, S. Barker Watkins Jr., of Henderson, and Vance F. Watkins, of Raleigh; and two granddaughters, Tiffany M. Watkins, of South Hill, Va., and Taylor N. Edwards, of Henderson.
The family will receive friends tonight, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home on 422 Lightwood Lane.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Charles Chewning, Smokey Grissom, Henry Williamson, Bill Jordan, Hubert Williamson, John Faucette, William Coker, Wallace Greenway, W.L. Harris Jr., Charlie Baskett, and Ellis Weathers.
Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to Friends of Hospice, P.O. Box 2596, Henderson, N.C. 27536, or to the charity of one’s choice.

Janice F. Barker
HENDERSON — Janice Fitts Barker, age 58, a resident of 418 Dr. Finch Road, died Tuesday at her home.
She was a native of Franklin County and was the daughter of Martha Medlin Fitts of Henderson and the late Pinkey Cornelius Fitts. She was a member of Plank Chapel United Methodist Church and was Head Cashier at Supply Line Country Market.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Eastside Baptist Church by the Rev. Aubrey Florence and the Rev. William “Bud” Budzinski. Burial will follow in the Plank Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Thurston Wallace Barker, of the home; one daughter, Renee Barker; one brother, James “Bo” Fitts, of Henderson, and two grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Wednesday night from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at her home.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Ralph Mayes, John Williams, Sammy Burgess, Mike Whitmore, Mike Aikens, Henry Finch, Tommy Pulley, and Winston Kerley.

WARREN COUNTY — Brown Alston, 89, formerly of Warren County, died Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2000, in Durham.

CREEDMOOR — Elvin T. “Mutt” Averette, 71, of 514 Twin Circle Court, Apex, died Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2000, at Rex Hospital in Raleigh. He was a native of Granville County and the son of the late Charlie B. and Clara Floyd Averette.
He was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, an Army veteran of the Korean conflict, a member of Creedmoor Lodge #499 A.F. & A.M. and was retired from IBM.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church by the Revs. Tommy Robertson, Bob Post and Mark Tilley. Burial will follow in the Enon Baptist Church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Blalock Averette; two sons, Mark Averette of Raleigh and Thomas D. Averette of Newport News, Va.; two stepdaughters, Brenda Sears and Janice Kuln, both of Apex; one stepson, Ricky Blalock of Fuquay-Varina; a sister, Frances A. Cozart of Durham; two brothers, Hubert Averette of Christianburg, Va., Louis Averette of Creedmoor; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

WARRENTON — Marion Boyd Fitts, 65, Hermenia Fitts Cook, 42, and Keith Antonia Fitts, 28, died Friday, Aug. 4, 2000, from injuries in an automobile accident.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Coley Spring Baptist Church in Warrenton. The Rev. Carson F. Jones Jr., pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Marion Boyd Fitts is survived by five daughters, Carolyn Fitts Cox of Henderson, Wilhelmenia Bailey of Henderson, Brenda Yancey of Henderson, Joyce Elam of Henderson and Nedra Fitts of the home; two sons, Eddie Lee Fitts Jr. of Warrenton and Jerry Fitts of Henderson; five sisters, Louise Fields of Warrenton, Clementine Dale of Henderson, Bessie Solomon of Newport News, Va., Cora Johnson of Warrenton and Margaret Davis of East Orange, N.J.; two brothers, Robert Boyd and Edenton Boyd, both of Newport News, Va.; 18 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.
Hermenia Fitts Cook is survived by her husband, Charlie Cook of the home; one daughter, Tomecia Fitts of Raleigh; one son, Shelton Fitts of the home; one grandson; five sisters, Carolyn Fitts Cox of Henderson, Wilhelmenia Bailey of Henderson, Brenda Yancey of Henderson, Joyce Elam of Henderson and Nedra Fitts of the home; two brothers, Eddie Lee Fitts Jr. of Warrenton and Jerry Fitts of Henderson.
Keith Antonio Fitts is survived by five sisters, Carolyn Fitts Cox of Henderson, Wilhelmenia Bailey of Henderson, Brenda Yancey of Henderson, Joyce Elam of Henderson and Nedra Fitts of the home; two brothers, Eddie Lee Fitts Jr. of Warrenton and Jerry Fitts of Henderson.
The bodies will be on view this morning at Boyd’s Funeral Services in Warrenton until taken to the church one hour prior to the services.

She is survived by four daughters, Dorothy H. Taylor of Henderson, Vivian Harris of Morristown, N.J., Clementine Hunter of Booton, N.J., and Carmen Nicholson of Greensboro; three sons, Govan Hunter and Warden Hunter, both of Oxford, and Earl Hunter of Manson; 25 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

OXFORD — Joseph R. Colenda, 76, of 5095 Dorsey Road, died at Duke Medical Center on Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2000. He was a native of Morehead City and the son of the late Frank and Gladys Davis Colenda.
He retired from Oxford Orphanage in 1990 with 26 years of service as a graphic art instructor. He was a member of Oxford United Methodist Church and choir member. He was a member of Oxford Masonic Lodge #122 A.F. & A.M., member of Oxford York Rite Bodies, Sudan Shrine Temple, New Bern. He was a member of Granville County Shrine Club and a U.S. veteran of World War II.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Oxford United Methodist Church by the Rev. Gayla Collins. Burial will follow in Meadowview Memorial Park.
Surviving are his wife, Marion F. Colenda of the home; one daughter, Mary Colenda Caudle of Oxford; four sons, Chris J. Colenda of Greensboro, Joseph R. Colenda Jr. of Grimesland, Robert D. Colenda of Panama City, Fla., and Steven B. Colenda of Castle Hayne; two brothers, Capt. Frank Colenda Jr. of Sterling, Va., and Capt. Brenda F. Fuller
HENDERSON — Brenda Faye Fuller, 36, of 321 Andrews Ave., Henderson, died Monday, Aug. 7, 2000, in the Duke Medical Center in Durham after a sudden illness. She was a native of Chapel Hill and the daughter of Madeline Briggs Fuller and the late Thie Fuller.
She joined the Yanceyville Missionary Baptist Church. After moving to Henderson, she attended Flat Creek Baptist Church.
She was a gradute of Bartlett Yancey High School and furthered her education by attending Granville Community College. She was an employed as a waitress of Pizza Hut in Henderson.
Surviving are her mother, Madeline Briggs Fuller of Blanch; daughter, Nicole Danielle Fuller of Henderson; three brothers, Jerry Fuller of Burlington, Ronnie Fuller of Winston Salem, and Donnie Fuller of High Point; and three sisters, Zesta Fuller Gant and Linda Fuller, both of Yanceyville and Sherba Fuller of Jacksonville.
Funeral services for Brenda Kaye Fuller will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Yanceyville Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The body may be viewed from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Fulton Funeral Home Chapel.

Willard B. Hardy
STEM — Willard Burton Hardy, 88, of 3170 Hwy. 15 South, died Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2000, in Durham Regional Hospital. He was a native of Pittsyvania County, Va., and the son of the late Willard and Pauline Burton Hardy and a retired tobacco farmer and a veteran of World War II.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Grace Dill. Burial will follow in Elmwood cemetery in Oxford.
