Jessie M. Lewis
OXFORD — Jessie Mae Lewis, 66, of 214 Granville St., died Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2000, at the Duke Medical Center. She was a Granville County native.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church where she served on the usher board.
Surviving are two sons, David Bumpass of Connerville, Ky., and Dale Bumpass of Lexington, Ky.; two daughters, Judy B. Carter and Brenda Bumpass, both of Lexington, Ky.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, officiated by the Rev. Lacy Joyner. Burial will follow in the Big Zion A.M.E. Church cemetery.
Viewing will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday at Betts & Son Funeral Home Inc.
Wilbur Marrow
OXFORD — Wilbur Marrow, 74, of 704 Raleigh St., died Sunday, Sept. 10, 2000, at the Triangle Hospice Center in Hillsborough. He was a Granville County native.
He was a member of the Mt. Zion Holiness Church. He was a former employee of Pine State Creamery.
Surviving are his wife, Nannie Marrow of the home; one daughter, Marian White of Oxford; three sisters, Catherine Smith of Rahway, N.J., Carol A. Bullock of Montclair, N.J., and Elaine B. Bullock of New Jersey; two brothers, George Marrow of Decatur, Ga., and Edward Bullock of New Jersey.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Mt. Zion Holiness Church, officiated by the Rev. Timothy Moore. Burial will follow in the Meadowview Memorial Park.

Pearl S. Patterson
BUTNER — Pearl Smith Patterson, 89, of 305-20th St., died Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2000, at Duke Medical Center. She was a Franklin County native and the daughter of the late Hugh and Mavis Green Smith and the widow of David Lee Patterson.
She was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Butner and was retired from Murdoch Center after 29 years of service.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church in Butner by Dr. Gene Garrison. Burial will be in the Carolina Memorial Gardens in Creedmoor.
Surviving are two daughters, Rachel P. Stone of Butner and Mozelle P. Ellis of Bahama; three sisters, Sallie S. Powell of Butner, Jessie S. Radford of Castalia, and Elsie S. Harris of Louisburg; a brother, Spencer Smith of Spring Hope; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Flowers accepted or memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church in Butner, P.O. Box 44, Butner, N.C. 27509.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Eakes Funeral Home in Creedmoor and at other times at the home.

Robert L. Williams
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Robert Lee Williams, 71, died Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2000, at Washington Hospital Center.
He was a Warren County native and the son of the late Clarence Williams and Susie Brown Williams of the Jerusalem community.
Arrangements will be announced later by Brown’s Funeral Services Inc. of Warrenton.
Irene Hargrove
HENDERSON -- Irene Hargrove, 45, of 502 Stone St., died Monday, Sept. 11, 2000, at Maria Parham Hospital. She was a native of Mecklenburg County, Va., and the daughter of the late Johnnie Moss and Lena Mae Hargrove.
She was educated in the Vance County Public Schools and was a member of Mt. Calvary Holiness Church in Townsville where the funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday by the Rev. Hurley Richardson. Burial will follow in the Antioch United Church of Christ cemetery in Townsville.
She is survived by one son, Dwyane Lamont Hargrove of the home; seven brothers, John O. Hargrove and William T. Hargrove of Williamsboro, David L. Hargrove of Townsville, James M. Hargrove of Tennessee, John William Hargrove of Williamsboro, James E. Brown of Henderson, Nathaniel Terry of New York; three sisters, Virginia Wilkins of Williamsboro, Barbara Hargrove of Townsville and Peggy A. Hargrove of Henderson; and two grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the home.
Pallbearers and floralbearers will be friends of the family.

Frank W. Kelly
HENDERSON -- Frank Woodrow Kelly, 80, of 1308 Andrew St., died Saturday, Sept. 9, 2000, in Winston-Salem. He was a Vance County native and the son of the late Claude and Betty Lewis Kelly.
He was educated in Vance County Public Schools and Kittrell Junior College.
He was a member of New Covenant United Holy Church in New York until returning to Henderson where he joined Holy Temple Church and served as a member of the deacon board. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service in Manhattan, N.Y., after 35 years and was a barber for 50 years.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday at Holy Temple Church by the Rev. Roosevelt Alston. Burial will be in the Long Creek Holiness Church cemetery.
Surviving are three adopted children, Ronald Daye and Pearl Daye, both of New York, and Cassandra Daye of California; two sisters, Helen K. Kelly of Henderson and Corese Smith of Bronx, N.Y.; one brother, David Kelly of Jamaica, N.Y.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. today at Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service and other times at the residence of Helen Harris, 519 Daniel St.
The body will be on view at Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service.
Edna T. Russell
VANCE COUNTY -- Edna Terry Russell, 71, of Bullocksville Park Road, died Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2000, at Fort Washington, Md. She was a Vance County native and the daughter of the late Alex and Mary Lizzie Terry.
She was educated in Warren County Public Schools.
She was a member of Oak Level United Church of Christ. She served on the usher board and the senior missionary board. She was employed by J.P. Taylor Tobacco Company for 22 years.
Funeral services will be conducted at 12 p.m. Saturday at Oak Level UCC by the Rev. Leon White. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are four daughters, Hattie Russell of Landover, Md., Laura Russell of Summit, N.J., Edna Bullock of Ft. Washington, Md., and Wanda Johnson of Greensboro; four sons, Buster Russell and Calvin Russell, both of Ft. Washington, Md., Roy Russell Stafford of Virginia and Emmitt Russell of the home; two sisters, Martha Bullock and Morine Clark, both of Manson; two brothers, Alex Terry Jr. of Manson and Willie Terry of Newark, N.J.; 21 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 1743 Bullocksville Park Road in Manson.
The body will be on view at Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service until taken to the church one hour before the service.

HENDERSON -- Elizabeth Ophelia Taylor White, 84, of 2100 N. Lynnbank Road, Henderson, died Thursday, Sept. 14, 2000, in Maria Parham Hospital.

WARREN COUNTY -- Robert Champion, 76, formerly of Warren County, died Wednesday, Sept. 13, 20000, in Brooklyn, N.Y. Arrangements will be announced later by R.H. Greene Funeral Home of Warrenton.
James W. Smithwick
HENDERSON -- James Walter “J.W.” Smithwick, 81, of 1349 Newton Dairy Road, Henderson, died Thursday, Sept. 14, 2000, at his farm. He was a Moore County native and the son of the late John Fort and Mamie Rose Smithwick.
He was a retired employee of the United States Postal Service and was a self-employed real estate broker. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of North Henderson Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and was a member of Gideons International.
Funeral services will be conducted at 4:30 p.m. Sunday at North Henderson Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. John Hines Adams Sr. Burial will follow in Brown’s Funeral Church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Geneva Robbins Smithwick; two daughters, Mary S. Weatherington of Henderson and Liz S. Stover of High Point; a son, John T. Smithwick of Henderson; a brother, Edwin Lee Smithwick of Lantana, Fla.; and five grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. today at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home.
The deacons of North Henderson Baptist Church will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be members of Gideons International.

Elizabeth T. White
HENDERSON -- Elizabeth Ophelia Taylor White, 84, of 2100 N. Lynnbank Road, Henderson, died Thursday, September 14, 2000, in Maria Parham Hospital.
Born in Nash County, she was the daughter of the late Haywood and Nevada Etheridge Taylor. She was the widow of Samuel Floyd White.
Mrs. White was retired from the former White’s Grocery Store, in Gill. She was a member of Fuller Chapel United Church of Christ.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, at 2 p.m., at Fuller Chapel United Church of Christ, conducted by the Rev. William “Bud” Budzinski, and the Rev. Grant Burns. Burial will follow in Union Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery.
Surviving are a daughter, Frances W. Beckham, of Kittrell; a son, Samuel Floyd “Sam” White, of Henderson; a sister, Mabelle Langley, of Elm City, N.C.; four grandchildren, Kimberly Beckham Davis, of Oxford, Regina Kay Beckham Thompson, of Kittrell, Kathy Beckham Thomas, of Henderson, and Larry Thomas Beckham, Jr., of Kittrell; and eight great-grandchildren, Morgan and Ryan Davis, Hayden and Christopher, Charles Thompson III, Asa, Erin Thomas and Makayla Beckham.
The family will receive friends this evening, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Gene Watkins, Sherwood Harp, Ronnie Briggs, David Paul, Marvin Hershman, James Edwards, Donald Strickland and Bill Mangum.

Robert L. Williams
WARRENTON -- Robert Lee Williams, 71, of Washington, D.C., formerly of the Jerusalem community, died Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2000, at Washington Hospital Center. He was a Warren County native and the son of the late Clarence Williams and Susie Brown Williams.
He attended the Warren County public schools and joined Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church at an early age. In 1949, he moved to Washington, D.C., and was employed for 35 years by Marriott Inc., before retiring in 1985.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church by the Revs. Dr. A.A. Brown and John E. Gooch. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Local services will be preceded by a funeral on Saturday at St. Judah Baptist Church in Washington, D.C.
There will be no wake in Warrenton. The body will lie in state for one hour at the church before the Sunday service.
Surviving are his wife, Susie Pauline Tatum Williams of Washington, D.C.; five daughters, Lysandra Burnside, Betty D. Williams-Javey, Terry Williams Proctor, Brenda McArthur and Dawn Williams, all of Washington, D.C.; two sons, Robert Norman Williams of Washington, D.C., and Donald Lee Williams of Capitol Heights, Md.; two sisters, Ella B. Moten of Newark, N.J., and Virginia Sharpe of Boston, Mass.; two brothers, Colonel Williams of Bayville, N.J., and the Rev. James Williams of Piscataway, N.J.; 16 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Teola M. Williams
NORLINA -- Teola Mae Williams, 84, of Norlina, died Monday, Sept. 11, 2000, at Maria Parham Hospital in Henderson.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Greenwood Baptist Church in Warrenton by the Rev. Eddie Lawrence, pastor. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are one daughter, Genola Seward of Norlina; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Joseph Shearin of Carson, Calif.; and one sister, Mattie Siggers of Dorchester, Mass.

Mary C. Boone
SMITHFIELD -- Mary Currin Boone, 88, of Smithfield, died Thursday, Sept. 14, 2000, at Johnston Memorial Hospital. She was a Granville County native and the daughter of the late John William and Amanda Fracie Currin. She was the widow of Marvin Merritt Boone.
She was a member of Bethesda Baptist Church of Clayton.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at Minshew Funeral Home Chapel. Entombment will follow in the Hills of the Neuse Garden Mausoleum.
Surviving are her daughter, Linda Boone Cockrell; one granddaughter; and one great-grandchild.
The family received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Minshew Funeral Home in Four Oaks.

MANSON -- James Hargrove, 50, of 3000 Jackson Town Road, Manson, died at the Granville Medical Center.

Lyda F. Respess
WASHINGTON -- Lyda Frances Respess, 93, of 106 Simmons St., died Friday, Sept. 15, 2000, at Britthaven of Washington. She was a native of Beaufort County and was the daughter of the late John B. and Lizzie Alligood Respess.
She was a charter member of First Church of Christ and director of the Roanoke Christian Service Camp.
Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Oakdale cemetery with Ray West officiating.
Surviving include several nieces and nephews including Jane White Jones and Nancy W. Clayton, both of Henderson.

Peggy Smith Pitchford
HENDERSON -- Peggy Smith Pitchford, age 52, a resident of 1002 McCoin Ave., died Saturday at UNC hospital in Chapel Hill.
She was a native of Franklin County and was the daughter of Bessie Wrenn Newman of Henderson and Walter C. Smith of Nokesville, Va. She was the owner and operator of the Clip and Curl Beauty Salon and attended St. James Catholic Church.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at the St. James Catholic Church by the Father Bill Long. Burial will follow in the Church cemetery.
In addition to her mother she is survived by her husband John McRae Pitchford of the home, one daughter Kelly Pitchford Matthews of Louisville Ky.; one son John M. Pitchford, Jr. of Manassas Va.; two sisters Lynn S. Hearn of Winsor NC and Carolyn S. Roberson of Henderson; two brothers Walter C. Smith of Disputanta Va. and Mike K. Smith of Nokesville, Va., and two grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Sunday night from 7 until 8:30 at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home.
