Martha B. White

WARRENTON — Martha Bowers White, 103, died Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2000, at Warren Hills Nursing Center in Warrenton. She was one of 13 children born to Thaddeus R. Bowers and Mary E. Dowtin Bowers. She was the widow of Dr. James Albert White Jr. of Halifax County.
She was a grade school and choral music teacher at Bear Swamp in Littleton, and later in the Roanoke Rapids schools. She was an active member of Bear Swamp Baptist Church where she held many positions of leadership.
After her husband’s death, she moved to the Bowers Homeplace in Littleton with her father and sister. Following their deaths, she made her home with her brother, the late Claude T. Bowers and his wife, Hattie C. Bowers in Warrenton. In 1980, she moved to Warren Hills Nursing Center.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Warrenton Baptist Church by the Rev. David Brooks. Burial will follow in Bear Swamp Baptist Church cemetery in Littleton.
Surviving are one sister-in-law, Mrs. Claude T. Bowers of Warrenton; and two step-granddaughters.
The family will receive friends at the home of Mrs. Claude T. Bowers, 315 Ridgeway St. in Warrenton, from 7 to 9 p.m. today.
Arrangements are by Blaylock Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Gustavious Williams

WARRENTON — Gustavious Williams, 65, of the Warren Hills Nursing Center, died Friday, Sept. 15, 2000, at Maria Parham Hospital.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Coley Springs Baptist Church by the Rev. Carson F. Jones. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Lucille Hedgepeth of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two sons, Stanley Williams of Fayetteville and Bouvier G. Williams of Springfield Gardens, N.Y.; one daughter, Jeanette L. Williams of Brooklyn, N.Y.; seven grandchildren; one brother, Owens Harding Williams; eight sisters, Marie Watson, Barbara Hargrove, Zenobia Hopkins, Freda Alston, Audrey Ferrell, Johnsie Williams, Sequence Taylor, and Joyce Faye Williams.
Arrangements are by R.H. Greene Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Raymond Baskett

HENDERSON -- Raymond Baskett, 68, of 511 Mayo St., has died. Arrangements will be announced later by Garnes Funeral Services Inc.

Baxter M. Buchanan Sr.

ROXBORO -- Baxter Merritt Buchanan Sr., 77, of 911 Providence Rd., died Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2000, at his home.
Born in Person County, he was son of the late Grover C. and Gertie Mae Young Buchanan. Mr. Buchanan was a graduate of Bethel Hill School and he served with the U.S. Army Airforce as a clerk typist in WWII.
He was employed by Collins & Aikman Corp. for 15 years, and later Home Security Life Insurance for 2 years. He delivered the Durham Morning Herald for 37 years, during which he never missed a day except for vacation time. He was a member and past deacon of Mill Creek Baptist Church.
Mr. Buchanan is survived by his wife, Mabel Pentecost Buchanan; three children, B. Merritt Buchanan Jr., of Pensacola, FL, Wanda Kaye B. Wilson, of Henderson, and G. Lawrence Buchanan, of Burlington; two brothers, G.C. Buchanan Jr., and W. Wayne Buchanan, both of Roxboro; one sister, Bessie B. Dickerson, of Roxboro; seven grandchildren, Karen B. Clowe, Kathy B. Mitchell, Kevin Buchanan, S. Dale Wilson, Christie L. Wilson, James Buchanan, and Matthew Buchanan; nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by six brothers, Claude, John, Rufus, Robert, Hampton, and Spurgeon Buchanan.
Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Thursday, at Mill Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. Tommy Robertson. Burial will follow in Person Memorial cemetery. Visitation was held 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Brooks & White Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be Frankie Gentry, Charlie Dickerson, Tim Langford, Steve Moore, Ricky Kendrick, Cecil Pixley, Thomas Routh, and Ed Thomas. Honorary pallbearers will be Thomas Clark, Berley Gentry, S.P. Gentry, Thomas Gentry, Sam Parham, L.C. Pixley, Dean Thomas and Wallace Tingen.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mill Creek Baptist Church, 1890 Mill Creek Ch. Rd., Roxboro, N.C. 27573, or Home Health & Hospice of Person Co., 325 Morgan St., Roxboro, NC 27573.

Derry Coles

HENDERSON -- Derry Coles, 87, of Henderson, died Saturday, Sept. 16, 2000, at Maria Parham Hospital.
Funeral services will be conducted at 12 p.m. Friday at Greenwood Baptist Church. The Rev. Eddie W. Lawrence, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are one daughter, LaKisha Hendricks of Henderson; two grandchildren; and one sister, Luvina Hammond of Bronx, N.Y.
The body will be on view today at Boyd’s Funeral Services until taken to the church one hour prior to services.
Arrangements are by Boyd’s Funeral Services of Warrenton.

Annie T. Hester

HENDERSON -- Annie Tucker Hester, 83, of Spartenburg, S.C., formerly of Route 5 Oxford, died Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2000 in Golden Age Nursing Home in Inman, S.C.
A Vance County native, she was the daughter of the late Charlie and Annie Knott Tucker and was the widow of Dorsey L. Hester.
She was retired from Burlington Industries, and was a member of the Church of Christ.
Survivors include two daughters, Peggy H. Lipke of Henderson, and Bonnie H. Abbott, and husband, George, of Spartanburg, S.C.; three grandsons, Chris Brewer, of Henderson, Al Abbott of Columbus, Ga., and David Abbott, of Douglas, Ga.; one granddaughter, Leigh Kinnard, of New York; and five great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Friday, at 7 p.m., at Flowers Funeral Chapel, conducted by Steve Kinnard.
The family will receive friends Friday, from 6 to 6:45 p.m., at Flowers Funeral Home. The family will meet at the home of her grandson, Chris Brewer, 1925 Poplar Creek Road, after 3:30 p.m. Friday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
Arrangements are by Flowers Funeral Home.

Jerry Ingram

WARRENTON -- Jerry Ingram, 58, of the Embro community, died Sunday, Sept. 17, 2000, at Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Greater Lovely Hill Baptist Church. The Rev. Wallace Lewis, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in the Gaston Baptist Church cemetery in Gaston.
Surviving are four brothers, George, James, Robert and Albert Tabb, all of Gaston; his adopted parents, Ora Sr. and Dorothy Lewis of Embro; two adopted sisters and five adopted brothers.
Arrangements are by R.H. Greene Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Ruth I. Ridgway

OXFORD -- Ruth I. Ridgway, 85, of 309 W. Thorndale Drive, died Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2000, at Brantwood Nursing and Retirement Center. She was a native of Alberta, Canada.
She resided in Lafayette, Ind., Muskegon, Mich., and was a resident of Oxford for 20 years.
She was a member of St. James Catholic Church, a member of the Oxford Womans Club, the Oxford Extension Homemakers Club, the Garden Study Club, a volunteer at Granville Medical Center and a homemaker. She was the widow of Murray A. Ridgway.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at St. James Catholic Church by the Rev. J. William Long. Burial will follow in Friends cemetery, Amboy, Ind., on Saturday.
Surviving are her sons, David M. Ridgway of Westover, Md., Douglas J. Ridgway of Jacksonville, Fla.; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
Memorials may be made to St. James Catholic Church, 3275 US158 Bypass, Henderson, N.C. 27536 or to Hospice, 123 Belle St., Oxford, N.C. 27565.

Clarence T. Varker

HENDERSON -- Clarence Thomas “C.T.” Varker, age 73, a resident of 1125 Park Avenue, died Tuesday night at Nextcare Hospital in Rocky Mount, N.C.
He was a native of Warren County and was the son of the late Willie Thomas and Lena Stegall Varker. He was a retired officer for the Henderson Police Department where he worked for 32 years.
During his service with the Police Department he served as head of the Detective Division and as interim police chief. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the Navy, and a member of the Central Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. in the J.M. White Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Jesse Matthews and the Rev. Alan McAllister. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Louise Matthews Varner, of Henderson; three sons, Patrick Thomas Varner of Raleigh, Carl Arnold Varker of Henderson, and David Lee Varker of Kittrell; one step-daughter, Connie Louise Walker, of Henderson; one sister, Willie Mae Varker Cobb, of Henderson; one half sister, Ann Goswick, of Franklinton; two half brothers, Bobby Varker of Kansas City, Mo., and Bud Varker of Warsaw, N.C. and three grandchildren.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home.
Serving as active pallbearers will be the Honor Guard of the Henderson Police Department.
Serving as honorary pall bearers will be all officers and retired officers of the Henderson Police Department.
Arrangements are by the J.M. White Funeral Home.

Eulalia E. Elliott

OXFORD -- Eulalia Elliott Elliott, 90, of 2651 Gela Road, died Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2000, at her home. She was a Granville County native and the daughter of the late Aucy Lee Elliott Sr. and Nona Wilkerson Elliott.
She was a member of Mt. Creek Baptist Church and was a homemaker.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Eakes Funeral Chapel in Oxford by Dr. Delos Miles. Burial will be in Mt. Creek Baptist Church cemetery.
Surviving are her daughter, Wilma Lee Elliott of the home; a son, Russell Elliott of Oxford; two sisters, Janie E. Blair of Oxford and Ruby Hill of Rougemont; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Eakes Funeral Home in Oxford and at other times at the home.
Arrangements are by Eakes Funeral Home of Oxford.

Samuel ‘Bill’ Harris

OXFORD -- Samuel “Bill” Harris, 62, of 8002 Sam Hall Road, died Thursday, Sept. 21, 2000. Arrangements are by Betts and Son Funeral Home of Oxford.

Robert Johnson Jr.

FRANKLIN, Va. -- Robert Johnson Jr., 67, of Franklin, Va., has died. Arrangements will be announced later by Garnes Funeral Services Inc.

Lucy Paschall

FAYETTEVILLE -- Lucy Clayton Reid Paschall, of Fayetteville, died Sunday, Sept. 17, 2000, at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville. She was a native of Mecklenburg County, Va., the daughter of the late George F. and Annie C. Reid, and the widow of Calvin C. Paschall who was principal of the former Kittrell Graded School for many years.
She was educated in the Clarksville Schools, and attended St. Paul’s College in Lawrenceville, Va., and received a B.S. degree in Elementary Education from Virginia State University. She also received the master’s of education degree from New York University in New York, N.Y., and was teacher in the Clarksville Schools for many years.
For many years, she was a member and the musician for Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Clarksville, Va., where the funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday by the pastor, Rev. Freddie Terry Jr. Interment will be in the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church cemetery in Vance County immediately after the services.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Williams Funeral Chapel.
The body may be viewed from 1 p.m. today until 11 a.m. Saturday when it will be taken to the church to lie in state one hour before the services.
Surviving are one daughter, Lois P. Somerville; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Arrangements are by Williams Funeral Home of Henderson.

William A. Wilson

OXFORD -- William Arthur Wilson, 66, of 4646 Fielding Knott Road, died Thursday, Sept. 21, 2000. He was a Granville County native and the son of the late Walter C. and Odell Pruitt Wilson.
He was an Army veteran and a member of Mt. Creek Baptist Church where he served as deacon, Sunday school secretary and church treasurer. He was retired from the transportation department of the Granville County School System.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Mt. Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. Delos Miles. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Barbara Blackwell Wilson of the home; a son, William “Gilbert” Wilson of Oxford; two sisters, Odell W. Ragland of Oxford, Shirley W. Coats of Raleigh; two brothers, Mack Wilson of Raleigh and Gene Wilson of Knoxville, Tenn.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Mt. Creek Baptist Church Building Fund, c/o 4646 Fielding Knott Road, Oxford, N.C. 27565.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at Eakes Funeral Home in Oxford and at other times at 8104 Buck Hart Road.
Arrangements are by Eakes Funeral Home of Oxford.

Robert G. Dague

CREEDMOOR -- Robert Gail Dague, 81, of 86 Weaver Road, Youngsville, died Thursday, Sept. 21, 2000, at Raleigh Community Hospital. He was a native of Lodi, Ohio, and the son of the late Harvey and Bessie Dague. He was a Navy veteran and retired from the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. in Akron, Ohio, after 41 years of service.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Creedmoor cemetery by the Rev. Don Brown.
Surviving are his wife, Helen Nevils Dague; two sons, Charles H. Dague of Uniontown, Ohio, and Michael R. Dague of Huachuea City, Ariz.; a stepson, Ralph T. Nevils of Raleigh; a brother, Willard Dague of Ft. Mills, S.C.: seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society, 3500 Westgate Drive, Suite 201, Durham, N.C. 27707 or to the American Heart Association, 3901 Computer Drive, Suite 110, Raleigh, N.C. 27609.
Visitation will follow the services at graveside.
Arrangements are by Eakes Funeral Home of Creedmoor.

Ethel T. Eggleston

HENDERSON -- Ethel Tingen Eggleston, 95, of 667 Davis Road, Henderson, died Thursday Sept. 21, 2000, in a local nursing home. She was a native of Lunenburg County, Va., and the daughter of the late James Garrett and Louetta Evanna Tingen Tingen. She was the widow of Patrick H. Eggleston.
She was a homemaker. Prior to her death, she was the oldest living member of Marrow’s Chapel United Methodist Church, having joined the church on July 17, 1919.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Marrow’s Chapel United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. John Crabtree. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are five daughters, Esther E. Aldrich of Henderson, Virginia E. Martin of Norlina, Marie E. Hayes of Henderson, Mary Helen E. Grissom of Henderson, and Judy E. Bunn of Knightdale; two sons, Thomas A. Eggleston of Henderson and James H. Eggleston of Hopewell, Va.; 20 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home of Winfred and Marie Hayes, 665 Davis Road in Henderson.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Wayne Martin, Bobby Martin, Michael Martin, Randy Martin, Mark Faulkner, Jimmy Eggleston, Robert Eggleston, Todd Eggleston, Edward Woody and Patrick Pearce.
Flowers will be accepted or memorial may be made to Marrow’s Chapel United Methodist Church, 2828 Morgan Road, Oxford, N.C. 27565.
Arrangements are by Flowers Funeral Home.

Sam I. Jones Sr.

HENDERSON -- Sam Ivory Jones Sr., 86, died Sept. 20, 2000, at Maria Parham Hospital. He was a Granville County native and the son of the late Alga and Betty Bailey Jones.
He was a World War II Army veteran and worked many years in construction.
Surviving are three sons, Sam I. Jones Jr. of Seat Pleasant, Md., Kennedy Jones and Tyrone Jones of Washington, D.C.; three daughters, Betty Jones, Gerdline Jones, Christine Jones, all of Washington, D.C., two sisters, Molly Beal of Washington, D.C., Claire Pulley of Henderson; two brothers, James D. Jones of Henderson and Buriley Jones of New York; and two grandchildren.
Arrangements are by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service and Quality Mortuary and Cremation Inc. of Durham.

Hazel M. Lockemy

HENDERSON -- Hazel Marie Lockemy, 59, of 1520 Hight St., died Friday, Sept. 22, 2000, at the University of North Carolina Memorial Hospital. She was a Warren County native and the daughter of the late Macon Gibbons Moseley and Lottie Alice Felts Moseley. She was the widow of Bobby Simon Lockemy.
She was a member of Jerusalem United Methodist Church and the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary in South Hill, Va.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Jerusalem United Methodist Church cemetery by Rev. Mark Clayton.
Surviving are three sons, Chris Lockemy of Cary, Melvin Lockemy of Henderson and Anthony Lockemy of Smithville, Ten..; one sister, Annie Ruth Lawhorne of Paschall; two brothers, Herbert Jack Moseley of Warrenton and Jimmy Moseley of Norlina.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Blaylock Funeral Home.
