Grizel P. Royster

OXFORD -- Grizel Perry Royster, 89, of 3088 Gela Road, died Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2000, at Duke Medical Center.
She was a member of New Grassy Creek Baptist Church where she was a member of the missionary circle, senior choir, and pastor’s aid club. She was a member of the Pansy Garden Club, Young-Zion Greenwood Extension Club, and a former member of the Granville County Mass Choir. She was a member of Order of the Eastern Star.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at New Grassy Creek Baptist Church by the Revs. Moses Fletcher and Mark Royster. Burial will be in Meadowview Memorial Park.
Surviving are three sons, Henry E. Royster Jr. of Oxford, Rev. Mark Royster Sr. of Chapel Hill and James Royster of New York, N.Y.; six daughters, Vernell Anderson, Mary McGhee, both of Oxford, Adlene Glover of Butner, Bessie Mae Royster of Richmond, Va., Mary Peace of Jersey City, N.J., and Beatrice Ellis of Fayetteville; one sister, Betty Lue Gregory of Oxford; three stepsisters, Ophelia Hopson of Oxford, Kate Marable and Mary Brown, both of Henderson; one stepbrother, Walter Marable of Detroit, Mich.; 29 grandchildren; and 38 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at Wright Funeral Home.

Marvin Rice Sr.

HENDERSON -- Marvin Rice Sr., 62, of 1228 Raleigh St., died Saturday, Sept. 23, 2000, at Duke Medical Center in Durham. He was a Vance County native and the son of Mary Liza Ragland and the late Irvin Rice.
He was educated in the Vance County Public Schools and was employed for many years with Pacific Coast Feathers.
He was a member of Big Ruin Creek Baptist Church where the funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday by Dr. C.B. Walton. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving, in addition to his mother, Mary Liza Rice of Henderson, are three daughters, Jean Rice of Durham, Jessie Rice of Henderson, and Annette Rice of Norlina; two sons, Marvin Rice Jr. of Haywood, Calif., and Bernard Rice of Henderson; two sisters, Mary Willie Dunston and Elizabeth Walker, both of Irvington, N.J.; two brothers, Robert Rice and Jessie Winston Rice, both of Henderson; 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Garnes Funeral Chapel and all other times at the home.
Arrangements are by Garnes Funeral Services Inc.

Harry E. Schoenhut

DURHAM -- Harry E. Schoenhut, Jr., died Tuesday, September 26, 2000.
A resident of the Forest at Duke Retirement Center, Mr. Schoenhut was born in Germantown, PA. On June 12, 1921, son of the late Harry E. Schoenhut and Olga Dorfner Schoenhut. Mr. Schoenhut was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church of Durham, and a former member and deacon of the First Presbyterian Church of Henderson, NC. He graduated from Penn Charter Preparatory School, Dartmouth College and the Tuck School of Business in Hanover, New Hampshire. He was a World War II veteran and retired in 1981 from the Navy Reserves as a Lt. Commander.
Surviving are his wife, Dorothy M. Schoenhut; one son, Scott Schoenhut of Beaverdam, VA; one daughter, Stephanie Schoenhut Stringer of Stafford, VA; two stepsons, Christy Graff of Charleston, SC, and Clark Graff of Thetford, VT; a stepdaughter, Catherine Graff-Mitchell of Westminster, CO; thirteen grandchildren. He was predeceased by his sister, Phyllis O’Hare.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Friday at the Forest at Duke with the Rev. Cathy Church Norman officiating.
A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Elmwood cemetery in Henderson, NC, with the Rev. Richard Brand officiating.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 300 Silver Cedar Ct., Chapel Hill, NC 27514 or to the charity of one’s choice.
Arrangements are with Hall-Wynne Funeral Service.

Leonard G. Thomas

OXFORD -- Leonard G. Thomas, 310 N. Country Club Drive, died Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2000, in Durham Regional Hospital in Durham.
Arrangements will be announced later by Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home of Oxford.

David E. Wooten

PINETOPS -- David Earl Wooten, 82, died Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2000.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Carlisle Funeral Home with the Rev. Harvey Parrish officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery.
Surviving are three daughters, Pearl Hardee of Fayetteville, Faye Webb of Macclesfield and Jean Harris of Tarboro; two sons, Ronald Wooten of Tarboro and David Lee Wooten of Norlina; three sisters, Ella W. Andrews and Mable Wooten, both of Tarboro, and Ruth W. Cummings of Pinetops; two brothers, James A. Wooten of Tarboro and J.D. Wooten Jr. of Raleigh; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Carlisle Funeral Home and other times at the home of Jean Harris, 509 Wahree St., Tarboro.

Mary Alston

HENDERSON -- Mary Gladys Brown Alston, 73, of 350 S. Vance Drive, died Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2000, at the U.N.C. Hospital in Chapel Hill. She was a Vance County native and the daughter of the late James “Jim” and Mattie J. Brown. She was the widow of Cornell Alston.
At an early age, she joined Mitchell Baptist Church, later joining The Jesus House of Prayer, which is now the United Prayer of Faith Holiness Church of Henderson.
She served as a faithful member of the Spiritual Gospel Singers Choir, The Mother Board and the Pastor’s Aid Club.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Olive Baptist Church by Elder Alfred Perry. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are seven daughters, Pattie J. Alston of the home, Mary L. Bates, Viola Dunston, Dorothy Alston, Josephine A. Vereen, Debra Alston, all of Henderson, Rosa Alexander of Kittrell; five sons, Cornell Alston Jr., Michael Alston and George Alston, all of the home, James T. Alston and Larry Alston, both of Henderson; one brother, Charlie T. Brown of Henderson; 28 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the home.
Pallbearers will be Sammy Burwell, Robert Thomas, Robert Alexander, Alfred Perry, Alexander Baskerville and Harry Dunston.
Floralbearers will be friends of the family.
Arrangements are by Garnes Funeral Services Inc.

Allen K. Ellington

FRANKLIN COUNTY -- Allen Kimball Ellington, of the Bobbitt community, died Sunday, Sept. 24, 2000, at his residence.
Surviving are his daughter, Patricia D. Hanretta; one brother, James Rowland Ellington; two grandchildren; one great-grandson.
Funeral services will be conducted at 9:30 a.m. today at Oakton United Methodist Church by Pastor John A. Plummer. Interment will military honors will be at 11 a.m. at Arlington National cemetery.

Mary Hargrove

WARRENTON -- Mary “Mandy” Amanda Davis Hargrove, 57, died Monday, Sept. 25, 2000, at Duke Hospital in Durham.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Greenwood Baptist Church in Warrenton. The Rev. Eddie Lawrence, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are her husband, Thomas R. Hargrove Sr. of the home; one daughter, Josephine A. Davis of Durham; two sons, Thomas R. Hargrove Jr. of Westbury, N.Y., and Franklin L. Hargrove of Warrenton; her mother, Mary D. Green of Warrenton; six sisters, Harriet Wiggins, Laura Davis, Shirley Steed, Elaine Sledge, Carolyn Tunstall, and Mattie Davis, all of Warrenton; five brothers, Andrew Davis of Washington, D.C., Calvin Davis, James Davis, William Alston, and Willie Alston, all of Warrenton; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Arrangements are by R.H. Greene Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Carvin C. Harp

CREEDMOOR -- Carvin C. Harp, 75, of 1038 College St., Oxford, died Thursday, Sept. 28, 2000, at Duke Medical Center. He was a Granville County native and the son of the late Sidney and Myrtle Sanderford Harp.
He was a member of Living Word Baptist Church and was medically retired.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Living Word Baptist Church by the Rev. Terry Hall. Burial will be in the Creedmoor cemetery.
Surviving are two sisters, Elizabeth H. Clayton and Lillian H. Horn, both of Creedmoor; and one brother, Durward B. Harp of Stem.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Eakes Funeral Home in Creedmoor and other times at the homes of Durwood Harp, 3126 Old Route 75, Stem, and Elizabeth H. Clayton, Ward Street, Lot No. 19, Creedmoor.
Arrangements are by Eakes Funeral Home of Creedmoor.

Jacqueline H. Simmons

WARREN COUNTY -- Jacqueline Haskins Simmons, 47, formerly of Warren County, died Sunday, Sept. 24, 2000, in Forestville, Md.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Russell Union Church in Manson. The Rev. Hezekiah Hendricks, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The viewing will be from 12 to 1 p.m. at the church.
Surviving are one son, Kevin Haskins; one stepson, Kenneth; one stepdaughter, Angela; four sisters, Dorothy Rowe, Yvonne Griggs, Sandra Epps and Sheila Haskins; three brothers, Rev. Melvin Haskins, Shelby and Christian; and nine grandchildren.
Arrangements are by R.H. Greene Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Evanglene R. Smith

OXFORD -- Evanglene Ragland Smith, 84, of 8184 Charlie Stovall Road, died Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2000, at the Duke Medical Center. She was the daughter of the late John H. Ragland and Ola M. Holloway Ragland.
She was a member of the St. Matthew Baptist Church, where she sang in the Senior Choir.
Surviving are four sons, William H. Smith Sr. of the home, James Smith of Henderson, Lorinza Smith of Roxboro and Birtha Lee Smith of Oxford; four daughters, Martha J. Bumpass, Wilsonia Reed, Lorine T. Smith and Lucille Smith, all of Oxford; one sister, Ulyses Battle of Sparta, Ga.; 27 grandchildren; and 36 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at the St. Matthew Baptist Church, officiated by the Rev. J. Phillip Betts, assisted by Minister Ida Black. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Betts & Son Funeral Home in Oxford.

Leonard G. ‘Jack’ Thomas

OXFORD -- Leonard G. “Jack” Thomas, 83, of 310 N. Country Club Dr., died Sept. 27, 2000 at Durham Regional Hospital. He was born on Dec. 27, 1916 in Harlan Co. Kentucky. He moved to Annapolis MD and worked in boat building for John Trumpy and Sons. He retired as a model maker in the Engineering Dept. at the United States Naval Academy.
In 1982, Jack and his wife, Mary Elizabeth Stokes Thomas moved to Oxford, NC. She passed away in Nov., 1995.
Graveside services will be conducted 10 a.m. Saturday at Meadowview Memorial Park by the Rev. Dr. J. Steven Bolton. The family will receive friends from 9 to 9:45 a.m. at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.
He is survived by his son, Jack E. Thomas of Annapolis, MD; two sisters, Margaret Thomas of Evarts, KY and Louann Koedel of Hamilton, Ohio; his granddaughter, Leslie Lynn Thomas of Annapolis, MD.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Masonic Home for Children, 600 College St., Oxford, NC 27565.

Lenwood Chavis

OXFORD -- Lenwood Chavis, 85, of 5092 Antioch Road, died Friday, Sept. 29, 2000, at Oxford Manor. Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home.

Maggie H. Davis

HENDERSON -- Maggie Harris Davis, 89, of 1500 Satterwhite Point Road, died Friday, Sept. 29, 2000, at her residence.
Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home of Henderson.

Mable B. Foy

HENDERSON -- Mable Bullock Foy, of 113 N. Bullock St., died Thursday, Sept. 28, 2000, at her residence. She was a Warren County native, the daughter of the late Haywood and Lottie Allen Bullock and the widow of Henry Foy.
She was a member of Manson Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday at Manson Baptist Church by the Rev. Cranford Davis. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Surviving are one daughter, Julia Bullock of the home; one granddaughter; two great-grandchildren; one sister, Cora Hicks of Manson; two brothers, James Bullock of Ahoskie and William Bullock of Upper Marlboro, Md.
The family will receive visitors from 6 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Wright Funeral Home of Henderson.

Allie B. Jefferson

GRANVILLE COUNTY -- Allie Bet Jefferson, 75, a Granville County native, died Sept. 28, 2000, in Albany, N.Y.
She was a member of Michael Creek Baptist Church where she joined at an early age until moving to New York.
Surviving are four daughters, Kathy J. Henderson of Oxford, Betty Thompson, Irene Jefferson, Ruth Roberson, all of Albany, N.Y.; one son, Roosevelt “Joe” Jefferson of Albany, N.Y.; two sisters, Mary Ethel Williams of Oxford, Elouise Rainey of Albany, N.Y.
Funeral services and burial will be conducted on Monday in Albany, N.Y.
Local announcements are by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service.

Garland Smith

HENDERSON -- Garland Smith, 73, of 213 Orange St., died Thursday, Sept. 28, 2000, at the Granville Medical Center.
Memorial services will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the Betts Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by the Bishop T.E. Woolfolk.
The family will receive visitors at the home.

Deborah H. Stegall

HENDERSON -- Deborah Hicks Stegall, age 43, a resident of 271 Greystone Road, died Friday at her home.
She was a native of Durham County and was the daughter of the late Clyde B. and Betty Jean Gainey Hicks. She was a secretary for the Communtiy Counseling Service and a member of the Raleigh Road Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. in the J.M. White Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Robert Kelley and the Rev. Ed Hicks. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
She is survived by her fiancé, Steve Harris; one daughter, Jessica Stegall, of the home; one son, Wayne Stegall, of Warrenton; one sister, Brenda Hicks Buchanan, of Henderson; and one brother, Michael D. Hicks, of Henderson.
The family will receive friends Saturday night from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home of Brenda Buchanan at 251 Greystone Road.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Doug Buchanan, Robert Shearin, Chip Hicks, Matt Nelson, Chris Buchanan, Dennis Wrenn, Walter Bagby and Buster Wells.
Arrangements are by the J.M. White Funeral Home.
