Edison W. Roberson

HENDERSON -- Edison William Roberson, 76, formerly of 1035 Eastern Boulevard, Henderson, died Monday, Oct. 9, 2000 in Maria Parham Hospital.
A native of Vance County, he was the son of the late Reuben and Nannie Roberson Roberson.
Mr. Roberson was a retired employee of Americal Inc. He was a member of Unity Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, at 11 a.m., in Flowers Funeral Chapel, conducted by the Rev. A. B. Greene, Jr. Burial will follow in New Bethel Baptist Church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Kathleen Lassiter Roberson, of Henderson; two sons, Jacky Wilson, of Rolesville, N.C., and Clyde Wilson, of Kittrell; a sister, Marie Roberson, of Henderson; and three grandchildren, Lori Wilson Ulrich, AAron Wilson, and Patrick Wilson.
The family will receive friends this evening, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home of Clyde Wilson, 20 N. Chaucer Way, Kittrell.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Tommy Lassiter, Ricky Overby, Johnny Overby, Billy Daniel, Bruce Franklin, Sammy Franklin, Joe Franklin, Ronnie Matthews, Sam Abbott, and Morris Abbott.
Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to Unity Baptist Church, P.O. Box 1125, Henderson, N.C. 27536.
Flowers Funeral Home is in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Alfred Taylor Jr.

HENDERSON -- Alfred Taylor Jr., 67, of 394 Southlake Lodge Road, died Friday, Oct. 6, 2000, at Franklin Regional Medical Center.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Wright Funeral Chapel in Henderson by the Rev. Samuel L. Bullock. Burial will be in Antioch Baptist Church cemetery in Granville County.
Surviving are three daughters, Fay Sheppard of the home, Shirley Hunter of Henderson and Alesia Hanks of Oxford; three sons, Alfred Taylor III and Barry Taylor, both of Henderson, and Anthony Taylor of Greensboro; one brother, Lee Taylor of Brooklyn, N.Y.; 14 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
The family will receive visitors from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Wright Funeral Home of Henderson and at other times at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Taylor III, 1509 Graham St.
Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home of Henderson.

Irene J. Belcher

OXFORD -- Irene Jones Belcher, 88, of Whitmore Retirement Center, died Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2000. She was a Granville County native, the daughter of the late Ernest T. and Maude Turner Jones, and the widow of Roy Belcher.
She was a member of Tabbs Creek Baptist Church, a former employee of Dr. J. Levenson, DVM, and a retired employee of Granville Medical Center.
Funeral services will be conducted at 4 p.m. Thursday at Tabbs Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. J. Lemar Wheeler. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are her daughter, Jean B. Parrott of Oxford; her sons, James B. “Sonny” of Greenville and Charles Belcher of Dallas, Texas; her sister, Louise J. Harris of Oxford; four grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Flowers are accepted or memorials may be made to The Building Fund of Tabbs Creek Baptist Church, c/o Waverly Critcher, P.O. Box 117, Oxford, N.C. 27565.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday in the fellowship hall of Tabbs Creek Baptist Church.
Arrangements are by Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home.

Herbert C. ‘H.C.’ Boyd

FRANKLIN -- Herbert Carroll “H.C.” Boyd, 69, died Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2000. He was a Vance County native and the son of the late William Herbert and Ida Stainback Boyd.
He was an Army veteran of the Korean War and was the retired manager of the Maxway Store. He was a member of the Franklin/Southampton Chamber of Commerce and was a Baptist.
Surviving are his wife of 38 years, Marion Brugh Boyd; three daughters, Teresa Boyd of Franklin, Penny Hart of Courtland and Vicki Felts of Sedley; two sons, David Boyd of Fayetteville and Bobby Boyd of Murfreesboro; one sister, Louise Blackwell of Henderson; and five grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at the chapel of Wright Funeral Home with the Rev. David Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Poplar Spring. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

William S. ‘Bill’ Crews Sr.

OXFORD -- William S. “Bill” Crews Sr., 91, of 3613 Southbend Drive, died Monday, Oct. 9, 2000, at Brantwood Nursing Center. He was a Granville County native and the son of the late William Thomas and Frances Skinner Crews.
He was a member of Corinth Baptist Church and was a retired farmer.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Eakes Funeral Chapel in Oxford by the Revs. Gary M. Brummitt and Terry Hall. Burial will be in Elmwood cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Betty Dickerson Crews of the home; two daughters, Julia Crews Gregory of Raleigh and Kathryn Crews Averett of Oxford; three sons, William S. “Butch” Crews of Cary, Neal C. Crews of Oxford, Robert G. Crews of Durham; a sister, Mary Lane Banister of Richmond; and six grandchildren.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Corinth Baptist Church Building Fund, c/o Frank Schmit, 3639 S. N.C. 96 Hwy., Oxford, N.C. 27565.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Eakes Funeral Home in Oxford and at other times at the home.
Arrangements are by Eakes Funeral Home of Oxford.

Marie S. Edwards

HENDERSON -- Marie Stainback Edwards, 61, of 406 Rowland St., Henderson, died Monday, Oct. 9, 2000, in Britthaven Nursing Home in Louisburg. She was a Franklin County native and the daughter of the late Willie Frank and Margaret Stainback Stainback. She was the widow of Maurice Lee “Mutt” Edwards.
She was a retired licensed practical nurse of Murdock Center in Butner. She was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Flowers Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Jonathan Owens. Burial will follow in New Bethel Baptist Church cemetery.
Surviving are a daughter, Susan Marie Gunter of Henderson; three stepdaughters, Elizabeth E. Garrett, Pamela E. Stevenson, and Janet E. Verzaal, all of Henderson; a stepson, Robert Lewis Edwards, of Wilmington; seven stepgrandchildren; and 10 step-great-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7:30 to 9 p.m. today at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home of Charles and Elizabeth Garrett, 819 Nelson St., Henderson.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Charles Garrett, Kenny Stainback, Eddie Stainback, Duke Stainback, Dennis Roberson, Paul Parrish, George Parrish, Bill Tyndall, and Glen Mullis.
Co-workers at Murdock Center and the Henderson Dailey Dispatch will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Arrangements are by Flowers Funeral Home.

Thornton Johnson Sr.

HENDERSON -- Thornton Johnson Sr., 82, died Sunday, Oct. 8, 2000, at Vance Manor Nursing Home.
Arrangements will be announced later by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service.

Minnie D. Walke

OXFORD -- Minnie Dickerson Walke, 88, of 1913 Taylor St., Durham, died Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2000, at her home. She was a Granville County native and the daughter of the late Walter and Maggie Evans Dickerson.
She was a homemaker.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Eakes Funeral Chapel in Oxford. Burial will be in Granville Memorial Park.
Surviving are three daughters, Mary Beal and Florence Kington, both of Durham, Maggie V. Boyd of Oxford; four sons, Walter Walke of Ocala, Fla., Henry T. Walke of Oxford, John L. Walke of Zebulon, Daniel Walke of Madison, Wisc.; a sister, Annie McCorkle of Durham; a half-sister, Florence Gupton of Durham; a brother, Grady Dickerson of Durham; a half-brother, William Dickerson of Durham; 17 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Eakes Funeral Home in Oxford and at other times at 707 Lindley Drive, Durham.
Arrangements are by Eakes Funeral Home of Oxford.

Susie P. Ward

RICHMOND -- Susie Person Ward, 91, of 6108 Almond Creek Lane, Richmond, Va., died Friday, Oct. 6, 2000, at the Medical College of Virginia Hospital in Richmond. She was a native of Vance County and the daughter of the late Plummer and Francis Crudup Person.
She was educated in Vance County Public Schools and was also the widow of Junior Ward.
She was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church in Kittrell where the funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday by the Rev. Jimmie Whitehurst. Burial will follow in the Ilong Baptist Church cemetery in the Fairport community.
Surviving are two daughters, Laura Hunter and Beatrice Hardy, both of Richmond, Va.; two sisters, Lizzie Belle Daye of Lake Woody, N.J., and Martha Hunter of Durham; one brother, Fred Person of Henderson; and one grandson.
Pallbearers and floralbearers will be friends of the family.
The family will receive friends at the home of Dorothy Jones, 829 Egypt Mountain Road.
Arrangements are by Garnes Funeral Services Inc.

Zelton H. Alston

HENDERSON -- Zelton Haywood Alston, 57, of 754 Thomas Road, died Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2000, at Veteran Administration Hospital in Durham.
The family will be at the residence.
Arrangements are by E.C. Terrys Funeral Service and the family will be at the residence.

Queen E. Clack

HENDERSON -- Queen Esther Clack, 94, of 110 Dabney Heights Lane, died Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2000, at her residence.
Arrangements will be announced later by Garnes Funeral Services Inc.

Robert H. Dunston

WARRENTON -- Robert H. Dunston, 79, of 158 Bypass, Warrenton, died Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2000, at Duke Medical Center in Durham.
Arrangements will be announced later by R.H. Greene Funeral Home in Warrenton.

Thorton Johnson Sr.

HENDERSON -- Thorton Johnson Sr., 82, died Sunday, Oct. 8, 2000, at Vance Manor Nursing Home.
He was a Wake County native and the son of the late Major and Ida Bailey Johnson.
He worked many years as a brick mason.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service. The Minister George Williams will officiate, assisted by Elder Charlie Jones. Burial will be in the Olive Grove Baptist cemetery in Granville County.
Surviving are two sons, Thornton Johnson Jr. and Melvin Johnson, both of Henderson; two brothers, Lester Johnson of Oxford and Major Nelson Johnson Jr. of Richmond, Va.; two stepbrothers, Johnny Allen of Raleigh and Willie B. Hargrove of Virginia; three stepsisters, Mary Ida Fowler of Durham, Pearl Glass of Virginia, and Mamie Morgan of Massachusetts; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Carol Johnson, 47 West Pine Hill Drive in the Martin Creek Development.
The body will be on view from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. today at Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service.
Arrangements are by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service of Henderson.

Julia Read

VANCE COUNTY -- Julia Knott Currin Read, 85, died Wednesday morning, October 11, 2000 at Rex Hospital.
She was born on August 8, 1915 in Vance County, NC to the late W. W. Currin and Minnie Hoyle Currin.
She graduated from Middleburg High School and attended business school in Henderson, NC. Music played an important role in her life. As a young woman, she and two of her sisters sang on radio station, WPTF, as The Currin Sisters. She served as the county auditor for Vance County and worked in Sales for Harriett-Henderson Cotton Mills. After moving to Houston, Tx. in 1963 to be near her family she worked for the Ley Construction land developers. She retired to Raleigh in 1982 and became active in the First Baptist Church of Raleigh. She served as a Sunday School teacher, Deaconess, worked with the Clothes Closet and coordinated the Church Directory in recent years.
Her seven siblings and her daughter, Julia Love Tuschman, preceded Julia in death. Three grandchildren, Margaret Love DeVinney and husband, Marc of Dallas, Tx, David Tuschman and wife, Tracy of Houston, Tx. and Jim Tuschman of Dallas, Tx. as well as 4 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews, all who loved her dearly, survive her.
A celebration of her wonderful life will be conducted by Dr. Daniel Day at the First Baptist Church in Raleigh at 1:30 p.m. on Friday. The family will receive guests in the Wyatt Parlor immediately following the service.
There will be a graveside service at Carey’s Chapel Baptist Church in Henderson on Friday, October 13, 2000 at 5:30 pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be made to the Building Fund of the First Baptist Church of Raleigh or to Carey’s Chapel Baptist Church in Henderson, NC.
The family will be at 2744 St. Mary’s Street, Raleigh, NC.

Annette Warren

HENDERSON -- Annette Warren, 41, of 306 Boddie St., died Sunday, Oct. 8, 2000, at her residence. She was a native of Brooklyn, N.Y., and the daughter of Mary Warren Williams.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday at New Bethel Baptist Church by Dr. J. H. Bryant. Burial will follow in Blacknall cemetery.
Surviving, in addition to her mother, are one sister, Bernice Jackson of Henderson; and one brother, William Warren of Brooklyn, N.Y.
The family will receive friends at the home.
Pallbearers will be Johnathan Meeks, Gary Meeks, William Warren, Bernard Crosson, Tommy Warren and Perry Henry Davis.
Floralbearers will be Tasha Warren, Kimberly Warren, Rosemary Warren, Noreen Daniels, Teresa Warren and Julia Davis.
Arrangements are by Garnes Funeral Services Inc.

Thurston E. Brandon

KITTRELL — Thurston E. Brandon, 65, of Kittrell, died Thursday, Oct. 12, 2000, at Britthaven Nursing Home in Louisburg. He was a Vance County native and the son of the late Theodore I. Brandon and Gertrude Taylor Brandon.
He served in the United States Marine Corps and later worked for a trucking company.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Taylor Chapel Methodist by the Rev. Walter Garrett Jr. Burial will follow in the Brandon Family cemetery.
Surviving are one son, Thurston Brandon Jr. of Massachusetts; three sisters, Hazel Frazier of Philadelphia, Pa., Helen Petty of Sanford and Gertie Hicks of Hampton, Va.; three brothers, Johnny Brandon and Joseph Brandon, both of Kittrell, and Theodore Brandon of Philadelphia, Pa.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Joseph Brandon, 22 West Chavis Road, Kittrell.
The body will be on view from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. today at Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service.
Arrangements are by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service.

Ruby H. Harris

TOWNSVILLE — Ruby Hamlin Harris, 78, of 14848 Hwy. 39 N., Townsville, died Thursday, Oct. 12, 2000, at her residence.
She was a native of Mecklenburg County, Va., and the daughter of the late Hubert Wesley and Effie Wells Hamlin. She was the widow of George Melanchthon Harris.
She was a homemaker. She was a member of Rock Spring Baptist Church, where she was a former Needy Counselor of the Ladies Sunday School Class.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Rock Spring Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Gary Brummitt. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are a daughter, Jane H. Richardson of Henderson; a son, George E. Harris Sr. of Clayton; four grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Randy Moody, Steve Moody, David Moody, David Reese, Clifton Capps, Bob Adams, Johnny Riggan and Ralph Green.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Rock Spring Baptist Church, Building Fund, P.O. Box 296, Townsville, N.C. 27584.
