Louie Mae Smith

HENDERSON — Louie Mae Smith, age 80, a resident of 721 Berry St., died Friday, October 13, 2000, at Maria Parham Hospital. She was a native of Vance Co. and was the daughter of the late Lewis and Magnolia Coghill Champion. She was the widow of Richard Harvey Smith and was a retired Housekeeper at the Vance Hotel.
Graveside services will be held Sunday, October 15, 2000 at 2 p.m. at Sunset Gardens by the Rev. Frank Sossamon.
She is survived by one daughter Margie Smith Davis of Henderson and one sister Maggie Champion Weaver of Henderson.
The family will receive friends Saturday night from 7 until 8:30 at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home of Tonya Pearce 716 Carolina Ave.

William J. Matthews

HENDERSON — William J. “Bill” Matthews, of 218 Crestwood Road, Henderson, died Friday, Oct. 13, 2000, at his home.
Funeral services will be conducted at 4:30 p.m. Sunday at Island Creek Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home.
Memorials may be made to Island Creek Baptist Church, 950 Stagecoach Road, Henderson, N.C. 27536.
Complete arrangements will be announced later by Flowers Funeral Home.

Carrie Williams

WARRENTON — Carrie Williams, 89, of the Largo community, Warrenton, died Friday, Oct. 13, 2000, at Maria Parham Hospital.
Arrangements will be announced later by Boyd’s Funeral Services of Warrenton.

Rev. Zelton H. Alston

HENDERSON -- The Rev. Zelton Haywood Alston, 57, died Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2000. He was the son of the late Reddick Alston and Theney Hamp.
At an early age, he joined the Cotton Memorial Presbyterian Church and later moved his membership to Mount Zion United Church of Christ where he served as a deacon from 1975 until becoming a minister in March 2000.
He was a 1962 graduate of Henderson Institute and furthered his education by attending Kittrell College in Kittrell, Vance-Granville Community College and Johnston Technical Community College. He was most recently studying theology at Virginia Union Satellite Program.
He was employed for many years at the local glass plant. He had also worked as a lifeguard and truck driver. He was a U.S. Army veteran.
Surviving are his wife, Esther Hargrove Alston, of the home; one daughter, Rene’ Alston Thompson; one brother, Walter Allen of Cheyenne, Wyo.; and one sister, Mary Ruth Alston of Henderson.
Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Zion UCC with the Rev. Glendora Hargrove officiating, assisted by the Revs. William Rainey and Tina Evans. Interment with military honors will follow in the church cemetery.
The body will lie in state at the church one hour prior to the services and from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at E.C. Terrys Funeral Service.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 754 Thomas Road.
Floralbearers will be Lucy Brown, Barbara Davis, Mary Perry, Magnolia Hunter, Bessie Thompson, Deborah Brown and Dorothy Lewis.
Pallbearers will be the deacons and trustees of Mt. Zion Church.
Arrangements are by E.C. Terry's Funeral Service.

Thurston E. Brandom

KITTRELL -- Thurston E. Brandom, 65, of Kittrell, died Thursday, Oct. 12, 2000, in Britthaven Nursing Home in Louisburg.
Arrangements will be announced later by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service of Henderson.

Queen E. Clack

HENDERSON -- Queen Esther Clack, 94, of 110 Dabney Heights Lane, died Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2000, at her residence. She was a Vance County native and the daughter of the late Louis Thorpe and Carrie Hawkins Thorpe. She was the widow of James Alexander Clack.
She sang in the choir of Big Ruin Creek Baptist Church where she was a member.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Big Ruin Creek Baptist Church by Dr. C.B. Walton. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are her children, Lucille Marrow and Mamie Lee Clack, both of the home, Andrew Jackson Clack and Louis Alexander Clack, both of Richmond, Va.; 15 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the home.
Pallbearers will be grandsons James Clack, Cleveland Macon, Jerry Clack, James Hicks, Craig Allen and Anthony Evans.
Floralbearers will be granddaughters, Queen Singleton, Rev. Joanne Allen, Gail Marie Macon, Dianne Hicks, Susie Daniels and Cynthia Clack.
Arrangements are by Garnes Funeral Services Inc.

Robert H. Dunston

WARRENTON -- Robert H. Dunston, 79, of 158 Bypass, Warrenton, died Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2000, at Duke Medical Center in Durham.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Mitchell Baptist Church in Louisburg. The Rev. Daniel Lilly, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Zelester Silver Dunston of the home; two daughters, Gloria Kearney of Warrenton and Dolly Howerton of Richmond, Va.; one son, Robert Dunston Jr. of Warrenton; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mattie Bruno of Brandywine, Md., and Edna Offer of Silver Springs, Md.
Arrangements are by R.H. Greene Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Philip Thomas Richardson

LOUISBURG -- Philip Thomas Richardson, 59, of 2007 Flat Rock Church Road, Louisburg, died Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2000, at his home. He was a Vance County native.
He spent most of life in sales.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Flat Rock Baptist Church by the Rev. Gary McNair. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Phyllis R. Richardson; daughters, Carol Zahran of Fayetteville and Tracy Dillard of Franklinton; sons, Philip Thomas Richardson Jr. of Wilmington, Christopher Richardson of Louisburg and Terry Lee Hall of the home; mother and step-father, Maggie and Norman Hale of Roanoke Rapids; sister, Deborah Barnett of Carboro; and seven grandchildren.
Friends may visit with the family from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Bright Funeral Home in Wake Forest.
Arrangements are by Bright Funeral Home of Wake Forest.

Anita Tyler Twisdale

RICHMOND -- Anita Tyler Twisdale, age 72, a resident of Quinton,Virginia died Tuesday, October 10, 2000 at Elizabeth Adam Crump Manor in Glen Allen, Virginia.
She was a native of Nansome County, Virginia and was the daughter of the late George Matthew “Mack” Gardner Tyler and Myrtle Mae Stancil Tyler.
“Nita” was a Licensed Practical Nurse, a graduate of Vance-Granville Community College, and practiced nursing both in Vance and Granville Counties and in the Richmond, Virginia area for 22 years.
She left behind wonderful memories and lasting love for her daughters, Deborah Twisdale and husband Dick of Townsville, Jeanette Trader and friend Mick Curley of Quinton, Virginia, and Joan Deets of Chesterfield, Virginia; her grandchildren, Heather and Jake Twisdale of Townsville, Tammy Kenner of Chesterfield, Virginia, Sheri McCamish of Hermitage, Tennessee, Ashley and Trey Deets of Chesterfield, Virginia; two great-grandchildren, Christopher and Taryn of Chesterfield, Virginia; her sister, Jean Rector of Asheville, N.C.; and loved ones from the Townsville-Henderson Community, and Staff and residents at Elizabeth Adam Crump Manor, including her “Best Buddy” Stella Epps and her beloved roommate Rose Tumulty.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, October 14, 2000 at 2 p.m. at the Tabernacle United Methodist Church in Townsville by the Rev. Joyce Day and the Rev. Henry Lovelace.
The family will receive friends at the home of Deborah and Dick Twisdale at 15255 Hwy. 39 N in the Townsville Community.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Tabernacle United Methodist Church, c/o Sylvia Anderson, P.O. Box 203, Townsville, N. C. 27584, or to Elizabeth Adam Crump Manor, 3600 Mountain Road, Glen Allen, Virginia 23060.

Thomas W. Abbott

HENDERSON -- Thomas W. Abbott, age 75, a resident of 123 Southern Ave., died Saturday, October 14, 2000, at his home.
He was a native of Vance County and was the son of the late Cleveland W. and Lucy Mosley Abbott. He was a veteran of the United States Army serving in World War II, and was a member of Mt. Grove Baptist Church in Alert. He attended Gold Sand High School.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Blessed Hope Baptist Church by the Rev. Donnie Perkinson. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
He is survived by his wife, Idell Grissom Hanford Abbott, of the home; one stepson, Ray Hanford of Henderson; one stepdaughter, Sally Hanford Waddell of Henderson; three sisters, Mildred A. Hale and Mae A. Bailey, both of Henderson, and Lucille A. Bobbitt of Louisburg; one brother, Wilson Abbott of Henderson; three stepgrandchildren and three great-stepgrandchildren.
The family will receive friends Monday night from 7 until 8:30 at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home.
Serving as active pallbearers will be: J.C. Abbott, John Coghill, Wayne Bobbitt, Gerald Perkinson, Sherwood Harp and Alton Harp.
J.M. White Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

William J. Matthews

HENDERSON -- William Junius Matthews, of 218 Crestwood Road, Henderson, died Friday, October 13, 2000 at his home.
A native of Vance County, he was the son of the late John Junius and Martha Virginia Riggan Matthews. He was the widower of Joyce Longmire Matthews.
Mr. Matthews was manager of the Vance County Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Agency. He was a member of Island Creek Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be held today, at 4:30 p.m., at Island Creek Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Johnson Gupton. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are a daughter, Donna M. Saad, and husband, Amgad, of Raleigh; a son, William A. “Bill” Matthews, and wife, Mariella, of Middleburg; four sisters, Virginia M. Fisher, Margaret M. Morgan, and Rose M. Wester, all of Henderson, and Edna M. Talley, of Fuquay Varina; and three grandchildren, William A. “Will” Matthews, Jr., Gabriella “Gabby” Matthews, and Sunnie Joyce Saad.
The family received friends Saturday, from 7 to 9 p.m., at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Macy Foster, Tom Kirby, Randolph Reese, Phil Brackins, Lawrence “Cotton” Clayton, Jimmy Twisdale, Bob Catherwood, and Terry Partin. Honorary pallbearers will be Wilson Hoyle, D.T. Ayscue, Charles Barnett, John Falkner, and employees of Vance County Farm Bureau.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Island Creek Baptist Church, 950 Stagecoach Road, Henderson, N.C. 27536.
Flowers Funeral Home is in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Glennie W. Tuck

HENDERSON -- Glennie Mae Winters Tuck, 74, of Hwy. 98, Durham, formerly of Henderson, died Friday, Oct. 13, 2000, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham.
Arrangements will be announced later by Flowers Funeral Home.

Frank H. Clark Sr.

OXFORD -- Frank Haskins Clark Sr., 84, of 304 Lanier St., died Friday, Oct. 13, 2000, at the Granville Medical Center. He was a Granville County native.
He was an Army veteran and attended Mary Potter School. He was a member of the New Johnathan Creek Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and chairman of the trustee board. He also was affiliated with the Sunday school, male chorus and senior choir.
Surviving are his wife, Nannie Jane Clark; three sons, Louis G. Clark of Oxford, Charlie A. Clark of Marietta, Ga., and Frank H. Clark Jr. of Cincinnati, Ohio; one daughter, Harrietta Royster of Winston-Salem; two brothers, MacBueford Clark of Oxford and Wilbert Bernard Clark of Milwaukee, Wisc.; one sister, Beulah Overby of Oxford; and four grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. today at New Johnathan Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. Robert E. Page, pastor. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family received visitors from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday at Betts & Son Funeral Home in Oxford.

Michael Crews

OXFORD -- Michael Crews, 48, of 307 Mimosa St., died Sunday, Oct. 15, 2000, at his residence.
He was an employee of Murdoch Center.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Wright Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Mack Timberlake Sr. Burial will be in Olive Grove Baptist Church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Carolyn Evans Crews; one daughter, Kierra Crews of the home; four sisters, Olivia Weatherbee of Newark, N.J., Aleisa L. El-Hamalawi of Durham, Trumilla Foreman and Regina Crews, both of Fort Washington, Md.
The family will receive visitors from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Wright Funeral Home.
Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home.

Danny D. Ellis

MACON -- Danny Dwight Ellis, died at his home, Sunday, October 15, 2000 at 6:55 a.m. following a lengthy illness. He was the son of the late Lila Parham Ellis.
Danny was employed as a Service Representative at Fleetwood Homes before his retirement several years ago.
Funeral services will be Tuesday at 4 p.m. in the J.M. White Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Jeff Prewar. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
He is survived by his wife Martha “Bonnie” Faulkner Ellis of the home; three children, David D. Ellis Sr., and wife Janet H. Ellis, and Lisa Ellis Rollin son all of Macon, and Lester Wayne Ellis of Henderson; four grandchildren, David D. Ellis Jr., Danny Wayne Ellis, Corey Alan Ellis and Danielle Denise Ellis all of Macon; and one brother Lester Ray Ellis of Louisburg.
Serving as active Pall Bearers will be: Ronald Pendergrass, Bill Jordan, Raymond “Doc” Harrison, Bobby Ray Ellis, L. Mike Ellis and Jay Ellis.
The family will receive friends Monday night from 7 until 8:30 at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home at Route 1, Macon for relatives and friends.

John M. McKinney

HENDERSON -- John M. McKinney, age 88, a resident of 415 Island Creek Estates, died Monday afternoon at a local nursing home.
He was a native of Halifax County, Va., and was the son of the late Addie and Sophia McKinney. He was the widower of Maggie Watson McKinney. He was retired from Harriett and Henderson Yarns, where he worked for 42 years.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 3 p.m. in the J.M. White Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Frank Sossamon. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
He is survived by one daughter, Merna M. Matthews, of Henderson, seven grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Maggie Lacks and Alice Overton both of Durham. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Nance and a son, Jimmy McKinney.
The family will receive friends Tuesday night from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home at the home of Merna Matthews at 1000 Island Creek Estates.
Serving as active pall bearers will be Adam Williams, Justin Hanford, Jason Matthews, James Watson, Johnny Watson, and Odell Pendley.
Flowers are accepted or memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 1609 Henderson, N.C. 27536.

Beverly K. Ranes

HENDERSON -- Beverly Kaye Ranes, of 116 Parker Street, Henderson, entered life March 3, 1948. She was the Angel of Katherine Wilson Ranes, and the late Ballard Morris Ranes. Both parents dedicated their lives to this special child.
God chose exceptional parents to entrust the care of this Angel Child. The blessings they received were far too many to count, and the love that was generated in her home overflowed into the neighborhood, community, and the entire town. Everyone who met Beverly was drawn to her, and she loved everyone she met. Beverly was never formally educated, however she always seemed to know which things were important in life. Anyone who was fortunate enough to be a part of Beverly’s circle of friends will never forget the life she lived.
Beverly died peacefully Monday, October 16, 2000, at her home. We will all mourn her passing, but know Heaven is truly blessed to have her in their band of Angels.
Miss Ranes was a member of North Henderson Baptist Church, where funeral services will be held Wednesday, at 2 p.m., conducted by the Rev. John Hines Adams Sr. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
Surviving, in addition to her mother, are a sister, Linda R. Clayton, and husband, Donald; and a brother, W. Ray Ranes, and wife, Bonnie, all of Henderson; three nieces, Claire Ranes, Beth Ranes, and Beth Peele; a nephew, T.J. Peele; countless other family members; and special friends, Frances and James Twisdale, Joyce and William Dickerson, Harriet and Bruce Gupton, and Robin and James Brown.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, from 7:30 to 9 p.m., at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Bobby Wilkerson, Danny Wilkerson, James Brown, Tim Jenks, Billy Dickerson, Billy Perry, F.T. Wrenn and R.A. Harris.
Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to North Henderson Baptist Church, 1211 North Garnett Street, Henderson, N.C. 27536.
Flowers Funeral Home is in charge of the funeral arrangements.
