John H. Roberson

HENDERSON -- John Harriel Roberson, age 53, a resident of 1010 S. Garnett Street, died Sunday.
He was a native of Vance County and was the son of the late Jim B. and Ida Smith Roberson. He was medically retired.
He is survived by four sisters, Brenda Hawkins, Mary Limer, Jackie Robertson, and Teri Hutson all of Henderson, and two brothers, James Roberson and Donnie Roberson both of Henderson.
Private services will be held by the family with burial in Fairview cemetery in Warrenton.
No visitation will be held by the family.
Arrangements are by the J.M. White Funeral Home.

Robert Thorpe Jr.

OXFORD -- Robert Thorpe Jr., 67, a native of Granville County, died Sunday, Oct. 15, 2000, at Durham Regional Hospital.
He was a retired merchant marine with over 34 years of service.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Wright Funeral Chapel by the Revs. Ned Thorpe, Garland Heggie, James Hester and Bobby Wilson. Burial will be in New Hope Granville Baptist Church cemetery.
Surviving are four sisters, Louise Thorpe of Brooklyn, N.Y., Mary T. Perry of Philadelphia, Pa., Virginia Thorpe and Gloria Thorpe, both of Oxford; and two brothers, Henry “Bill” Thorpe and Rev. Ned Thorpe, both of Chapel Hill.
The family will receive visitors from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Wright Funeral Home and at other times at 203 Alexander Ave.
Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home.

Michael Crews

OXFORD -- Michael Crews, 48, of 307 Mimosa St., died Sunday, Oct. 15, 2000, at his residence.
He was an employee of Murdoch Center.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Wright Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Mack Timberlake Sr. Burial will be in New Hope Granville Missionary Baptist Church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Carolyn Evans Crews; one daughter, Kierra Crews of the home; four sisters, Olivia Weatherbee of Newark, N.J., Aleisa L. El-Hamalawi of Durham, Trumilla Foreman and Regina Crews, both of Fort Washington, Md.; four brothers, Leslie Crews of Henderson, Shelton Crews of Newark, N.J., Calvin Crews and Dexter Crews, both of Kittrell.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Wright Funeral Home.

Pearl V. Rainey

HENDERSON -- Pearl Vaughan Rainey, 73, of 415 Finch Road, died Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2000, at her home. Arrangements are pending with the J.M. White Funeral Home.

Mary N. Sheppard

HENDERSON -- Mary Neiley Sheppard, 95, of 96 Wendy Court, Henderson, died Sunday, Oct. 15, 2000, at her home. She was a native of Philadelphia, Pa., and daughter of the late Jim and Mary Eleanor Townsend. She was the widow of Joseph Sheppard, Sr.
She was a retired chemist with Allied Chemical Company.
Surviving are seven grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
No service is planned locally.
Arrangements are by Flowers Funeral Home of Henderson.

Glennie W. Tuck

HENDERSON -- Glennie Mae Winters Tuck, 74, of Hwy. 98, Durham, formerly of Henderson, died Friday, Oct. 13, 2000, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham. She was a Granville County native and the daughter of the late Vernon and Mary Winters. She was the widow of Lawrence Hoover Tuck.
She was a retired child care provider.
Memorial services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Freedom Life Church of God, conducted by the Rev. Jeff Prewer.
Surviving are a daughter, Carolyn T. Satterwhite of Kittrell; four sons, Lawrence H. Tuck Jr., and Sam Tuck, both of Henderson, Clifton T. Tuck of Durham, and William Tuck of Raleigh; a sister, Peggy Winters of California; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Arrangements are by Flowers Funeral Home.

Pearl V. Rainey

HENDERSON -- Pearl Vaughan Rainey, age 73, a resident of 415 Finch Road, died Tuesday afternoon at her home.
She was a native of Warren County, daughter of the late Edgar Blount and Pearl Jerman Thompson Vaughan, and the widow of Wilbert Lee Rainey.
She was a homemaker and a lifetime member of the First Baptist Church.
Graveside services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Sunset Gardens by the Rev. Frank Sossamon.
She is survived by one son, Wilbert E. Rainey, of Henderson; one sister, Peggy V. Capps, of Henderson; four grandchildren, two great grandchildren, three stepgrandchildren, and one great-stepgrandchild.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, Freeman Vaughan, Jerman Vaughan, Martin Earl Vaughan, and Harvey Vaughan; and one sister, Louise Vaughan.
The family will receive friends Thursday night from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home at 415 Finch Road.
Serving as active pall bearers will be Michael Livengood, Jerry Steed, Matthew Darnell, Scott Keesee, Jimmy Capps, and Jason Steed.
Arrangements are by the J.M. White Funeral Home.

Paul J. Stainback

HENDERSON -- Paul Jones Stainback, 83, of 137 Southern Avenue, Henderson, died Wednesday, October 18, 2000.
A native of Vance County, he was the son of the late James Paul and Lucy Vaughan Stainback.
Mr. Stainback was a retired office manager with the former Pepsi Cola Bottling Company, of Henderson, and was an accountant. He was a member of First Baptist Church, the Henderson Lion’s Club, the Henderson Masonic Lodge No. 229 AF & AM, and the Henderson Shrine Club. He served on the Vance County ABC Board for the past thirty years, and as chairman of the Board for the past fifteen years.
A graveside funeral service will be held Friday, at 2 p.m., in Sunset Gardens, conducted by Dr. Marion D. Lark.
Surviving are his wife, Eloise Suitt Stainback; a son, Jerry Stainback, and wife, Ellen, of Henderson; and one granddaughter, Rebecca Stainback.
The family will receive friends this evening from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home on 137 Southern Avenue, or at the home of Jerry and Ellen Stainback, 140 Country Club Drive.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Mike Satterwhite, David Parham, Hugh Thomas Ragland Jr., Ronald McDuffey Ragland, Ricky Davis, and Julian Pernell. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Vance County ABC Board.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Diabetes. Association, North Carolina Affiliate Inc., 3109 Poplarwood Court, suite 125, Raleigh, N.C. 27604-1043; or to First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 75, Henderson, N.C. 27536.
Flowers Funeral Home is in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Timothy S. Daniel

ROANOKE RAPIDS — Timothy Scott Daniel, 23, of 903 Gray St., Roanoke Rapids, died Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2000. He was the son of Sherry and Walter “Butch” Daniel of Roanoke Rapids.
Surviving are his maternal grandmother, Peggy Williams of Gaston; maternal grandfather, Jeff Williams of Roanoke Rapids; paternal grandmother, Frances Kidd of Henderson; paternal grandfather, Thomas Kidd of Bracey, Va.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. today at Askew Funeral Services Chapel with the Rev. Charles Arnold officiating. Burial will follow in Cedarwood cemetery.
The family received friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home and other times at the home of his parents, 110 Morgan Drive, RR.
Arrangements are by Askew Funeral Services of Roanoke Rapids.

Douglas M. Ragland

HENDERSON — Douglas McDonald Ragland, 46, of 444 Sunnyview Road, died Thursday, Oct. 19, 2000.
The family will receive friends at the home.
Arrangements are by Garnes Funeral Services Inc.

Thomas J. Scott Jr.

WARRENTON — Thomas James Scott Jr., 66, of Rt. 1, Box 56, died Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2000, at Senior Citizens Nursing Home. Arrangements will be announced later by Blaylock Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Lizzie Umstead

OXFORD — Lizzie Anna Howard Umstead, 84, of 400 Roxboro Road, died Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2000, at Granville Medical Center.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at New Grassy Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. Moses Fletcher. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Surviving are four daughters, Edna Umstead of Newark, N.J., Gwendolyn Umstead of the home, Jackie Sneed of Kittrell, and Betty Mitchell of Oxford; two sisters, Addie Chandler of Oxford and Ruby McCaden of Durham; 12 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Wright Funeral Home of Oxford.

Carrie Williams

WARRENTON — Carrie Williams, 89, of the Largo community, Warrenton, died Friday, Oct. 13, 2000, at Maria Parham Hospital in Henderson.
Funeral services will be conducted at 12 p.m. Saturday at Coley Springs Missionary Baptist Church. The Dr. A.A. Brown will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are one daughter, Shirin Williams Herndon of Temple Hills, Md.; one grandson; two granddaughters; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Willie J. Williams of New Rochelle, N.Y., and Emily E. Jones of Radcliff, Ky.; one brother, Robert H. Jones of New Rochelle, N.Y.
The family will receive relatives and friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Coley Springs Missionary Baptist Church.
Arrangements are by Boyd’s Funeral Services of Warrenton.

Luvenia F. Allen

WARRENTON -- Luvenia Fitts Allen, 62, of the Embro community, died Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2000, at Maria Parham Hospital in Henderson.
The body will lie in view Saturday up until 7 p.m. A wake will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. The Rev. Johnnie Fitts will officiate. Burial will be in the Liberty cemetery in Liberty, N.Y.
Surviving are one daughter, Eula L. Allen of the home; two sons, Kevin Fitts of Warrenton and Howard Fitts of South Fallsborough, N.Y.; several grandchildren; one sister, Lillie Fogg of Warrenton; four brothers, Rev. Leroy Fitts of Baltimore, Md., Ernest Fitts and Rev. Johnnie Fitts, both of Norlina, and James Fitts of Warrenton.
Arrangements are by R.H. Greene Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Douglas M. Ragland

HENDERSON -- Douglas McDonald Ragland, “Mack”, 46, of 444 Sunnyview Road, died Thursday, Oct. 19, 2000. He was a Vance County native and the son of Dorothy Ragland-Goode and the late Stephen W. Ragland.
He attended the Vance County Public Schools and was a graduate of Vance Senior High School.
He was a veteran of the United States Army and was recently employed with Handcrafted Homes in Henderson.
He was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church where the funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday by Dr. J.H. Bryant, Dr. C.B. Walton and Rev. Harry L. Williams.
Burial will follow in the Jones Chapel Baptist Church cemetery.
Surviving, in addition to his mother, are four children, Corey Harris of East Orange, N.J., Douglas Ragland, Kenyatta Ragland and Chadwick Ragland, all of Henderson; three brothers, Stephen Ragland of Henderson, James Ragland of Fairfield, Ga., and Bernard Ragland of Burlington, N.J.
The family will receive friends at the home.
Pallbearers will be nephews and cousins.
Floralbearers will be Cration Roberts, Diane Boyd, Bobbie Davis, Kathy Marrow, Josephine Henderson, Mildred Jones, Teresa Jones, Naomi Shabazz, Gwendolyn Mushaw, Sandra Faye Bullock, Phyllis Harris, Nancy Young, Jackie Johnson, Latisha Young and Lou Betty Baskerville.
Arrangements are by Garnes Funeral Services Inc.

Thomas J. Scott Jr.

WARRENTON -- Thomas James Scott Jr., 66, of Rt. 1 Box 56, died Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2000, at Senior Citizens Nursing Home. He was a native of Aurora, Ill., and the son of the late Thomas James Scott Sr. and Thelma Howard Scott.
He was a U.S. Marine veteran, having served in the Korean Conflict, a member of the VFW and past commander of Post #8081 in Warrenville, Ill.
Memorial services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday at Blaylock Funeral Home by Dr. James Perry.
Surviving are his wife, Loretta Agnes Scott of the home; two sons, Timothy Lee Scott of Warrenton and Tommy Jim Scott III of Tampa, Fla.; one daughter, Kathleen Elizabeth Scott Wyant of California; three brothers, Lawrence Erath of Cherokee, Ark., Gerald Dean Scott of Warrenton and John Robert Scott of Aurora, Ill.; and two grandchildren.
The family will receive friends prior to memorial services, from 12 to 1 p.m. Monday, at Blaylock Funeral Home.

Irene S. Ellison

Irene S. Ellison, 88, of 1409 Quail Run Apt. B died Oct. 21, 2000 at Britthaven Nursing Home in Henderson after a lengthy illness.
Funeral arrangements will be announced later by Mary Davis Royster Funeral Service. Family will receive friends at the residence.

Milton Jackson

Milton Jackson, 60, a resident of Newark, N.J., died Thursday in Veteran’s Hospital in East Orange, N.J.
Wright Funeral Home of Henderson is in charge of arrangements.

Lois Peace

Lois Peace, 72, a resident of 366 Dabney Heights Lane, died Thursday at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill.
Funeral services will be conducted by Reverend John Pugh at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Wright Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Elmwood cemetery.
She is survived by: five daughters, Irene Perry, Nannie Hargrove, Yvonne Bullock, Vivian Towns, all of Henderson, and Annie Terry of Oxford; four sons, Albert Lee Brandon, Wallace Donnell Brandon, Richard Thomas Peace, and Kenneth Peace, all of Henderson; three sisters, Mary Frances Peace and Dorothy Jean Peace, both of Oxford, and Christine Steed of Henderson; one brother, Louis Thomas Peace of Oxford; 12 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
The family will receive visitors Monday from 7 until 8 p.m. at Wright Funeral Home of Henderson.

Audrey D. Dean

OXFORD -- Audrey D. Dean, 79, of 5239 Moriah Road, died Saturday, Oct. 21, 2000, at her home. She was a Granville County native and the daughter of the late Robert Lee and Cora Jones Dean.
She was of the Baptist faith and was a homemaker.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Eakes Funeral Chapel in Oxford by the Rev. Keith Williams. Burial will be in Mt. Zion Baptist Church cemetery.
Surviving are her husband of 60 years, Alton Dean; a son, Ernest A. Dean Jr. of Rougemont; two granddaughters; and one great-grandson.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Staff Builders Home Health Care, 1937 N.C. 39 Hwy. North, Louisburg, N.C. 27549.
Visitation was from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Eakes Funeral Home in Oxford and at other times at the home.
Arrangements are by Eakes Funeral Home of Oxford.
