Emma J. Mangum

STEM -- Emma J. Mangum, 78, of 1716 Sanders Road, died Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2000, at her home. She was a Granville County native and the daughter of the late Johnnie Bryant and Annie Bullock Jackson.
She was a member of Geneva Presbyterian Church and was retired from John Umstead.
Graveside memorial services will be conducted at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Bullock Family cemetery off of the Range Road in Stem.
Surviving are a son, Mike Mangum of Creedmoor; a sister, Virginia Beal of Butner; a brother, Ralph Jackson of Stem; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, a special request has been made to tell someone special that you love them.
Arrangements are by Eakes Funeral Home of Oxford.

Euell Montague Jr.

BUTNER -- Euell Montague Jr., 68, of 24th St. Twin Circle, Lot. 7, Butner, died Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2000, at Durham Regional Hospital in Durham.
He was a Granville County native and attended the Granville County Schools, he also was employed at University Ford in Durham for 48 years.
He was a member of the Tally Ho Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Corine Green Montague of the home; four foster sons, Randy Cash of Norfolk, Va., Marvin Cash of Oxford, Daniel Cash and James Cash, both of Butner; six sisters, Pauline Ragland of Creedmoor, Gladys Rochelle of Durham, Dorothy Montague, Lucy Montague, Joyce Mantague and Evelyn Montague, all of Butner; four brothers, William Montague and Eulice Montague, both of Creedmoor, Bobby Montague of Newark, N.J., and Martin Montague of Butner.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Tally Ho Baptist Church in Stem, officiated by the Rev. Moses Fletcher. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive from 7 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Betts & Son Funeral Home.
Arrangements are by Betts & Son Funeral Services.

James D. Bissette

WILSON -- James Denning Bissette, 42, a long time resident of Wilson died Tuesday. Born and raised in Wilson, he attended Wilson Public Schools and graduated from Wake Forest University in 1980.
Bissette worked in the insurance and banking fields from 1980 to 1985. In 1986, he joined his father’s firm -- Bissette’s Appraisal Service -- and earned his Senior Residential Appraiser designation from the appraisal Institute in 1988. He was President of Bissette Appraisal Service in 1988 and was responsible for its success. He was president of the Wilson MLS Board in 1999. He was also elected Chairman of the Wilson City Planning Board in 1999 and held that position in 2000. He was Chairman of the Board of Adjustment for the city of Wilson during the late 1980’s to the early 1990’s. He was active in numerous real estate ventures throughout Wilson County.
Bissette loved his family and enjoyed all church related activities. He was the Cubmaster for Pack 4 for the last 3 years and was directly responsible for Scouting’s positive impact on young boys. He was a Deacon at the First Presbyterian Church for many years and was recently nominated to be an Elder of the church. He was awarded the honor of Cubmaster of the year in 1999. He loved his wife and children with all his heart, soul and mind. He always put his children first and enjoyed taking his kids on numerous outings including jet skiing, tubing, water skiing, swim meets and weekend camping trips. His friends and family will always remember his positive impact on their lives.
He is survived by his wife, Kim Bissette; son, James (Jim) Bissette, Jr.; and daughter, Rebecca Bissette; mother, Jacqueline Johnson Bissette; brothers, Johnson and Mack Bissette. His father, Mack D. Bissette, Jr. died in 1988.
A graveside service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in Maplewood cemetery with the Rev. James McKinnon and Rev. Bill Bussey officiating. The family will receive friends at Joyner’s Funeral Home, 4100 US 264 W, on Thursday evening from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
In lieu of flowers the family requests the memorials be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 413 Sunset Rd., Wilson, NC 27893 or Boy Scouts of America, P.O. Box 1698, Kinston, NC 28503.

George H. Brown

WARRENTON -- George Hurbert Brown, 79, of the Lickskillet community, died Friday, Oct. 27, 2000, at Veterans Administration Hospital in Durham.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Jerusalem Baptist Church by Dr. A.A. Brown. Burial will follow in the Brown Family cemetery in Warrenton.
Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth C. Brown of the home; one daughter, Helen B. Stallings of Baltimore, Md.; two sons, George H. Brown of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Samuel Brown of Warrenton; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and four sisters, Lovie Jordan of Spring Hope, Minerva Branch of Warrenton, Mary Massenburg of Louisburg and Gertha Alston of Greensboro.
The body will be on view this morning at Boyd’s Funeral Service in Warrenton until taken to the church one hour before services.
Arrangements are by Boyd’s Funeral Service of Warrenton.

Barbara H. Bumpass

OXFORD -- Barbara Huff Bumpass, 51, of 3632 Hwy. #96, died Thursday, Nov. 2, 2000, at Durham Regional Hospital. She was a Granville County native and the daughter of the late Rufus and Frances Lunsford Huff.
She was a member of Corinth Baptist Church and was corporative secretary of Louisburg Tractor and Truck Company.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Corinth Baptist Church by the Rev. Dee Coker. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Surviving are her husband, James O. Bumpass Jr., of Oxford; a sister, Wanda Huff Haskins of Oxford; and two brothers, Michael L. Huff and Darrell Huff, both of Oxford.
Flowers are accepted or memorials may be given to Corinth Baptist Church Building Fund, c/o Frank Schmit, 3639 Hwy. 96, Oxford, N.C. 27565.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Eakes Funeral Home of Oxford and other times at the home.
Arrangements are by Eakes Funeral Home of Oxford.

Mary W. Christmas

WARRENTON -- Mary W. Christmas, of Warrenton, died Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2000, at Guardian Care Nursing Home of Henderson.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Kingdom Hall of Warrenton. The Rev. James Boyd will officiate. Burial will follow in the Coley Springs Baptist Church in Warrenton.
Surviving are eight children, Irene Moss-Carter, Hervey, Kenneth, and Lloyd Christmas, all of Warrenton, Aca Christmas of Florida, Geraldean Gregory of Orange, N.J., Baggie Tex of Montclair, N.J., and Maxcine Cooper of Huntsville, Ala.; 14 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Sally Bett Williams and Effie Alston, both of Warrenton.
Arrangements are by R.H. Greene Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Juel W. Duke

BRACEY, VA. -- Mrs. Juel Williams Duke, age 79, of Bracey, Va., died at Community Memorial Health Center on Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2000.
She was born on October 20, 1921 in Warren County to the late John Park Williams and Essie Mae Weaver Williams, and was the widow of the late William Edwards “Buck” Duke Jr.
Mrs. Duke was a member of Norlina Baptist Church in Norlina and a Restaurant owner.
Funeral services will be conducted by Rev. Carlyle Hall on Friday, November 3, 2000 at 11 a.m. at the Norlina Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Warren Dale cemetery in Norlina. A visitation will be held at Blaylock Funeral Home in Warrenton from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, November 2, 2000.
Mrs. Duke is survived by: her companion, Mr. Rob Yancy of Norlina, NC; one daughter, Juel Williams Duke Jr. of Ridge, Maryland; two sisters, Mrs. Mae Jack Piland of Norlina, and Mrs. Linda Ann Edwards of St. Petersburg, Fla.; two brothers, Lee Williams of Norlina and J.P. Williams, also of Norlina.
Memorials may be made to: Norlina Baptist Church, P.O. Box 367, Norlina, N.C. 27563.

Susan F. Maitland

CHASE CITY, VA. -- Susan Farrar Maitland, 48, of Skipwith, Va., died Thursday, Nov. 2, 2000. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church and a devoted foster parent to many.
She is survived by her children, Elson Wayne Maitland Jr., of Henderson, Donna Maitland Lopez of Skipwith, Va., Wanda M. Magann of Chase City, Va.; foster children, Michael Wayne Maitland, Stephen Michael Maitland, Donna Denise Kerns, Ashley Danielle Welton, Krystal Lynn Gay, Ashley Rene’e Everett, Jason Nathaniel Waters; brothers, Swanson George Younger Jr. of Skipwith, Va., Jack S. Younger of Tennessee; sisters, Peggy Clark of Portsmouth, Va., Helen Claiborne of Blackstone, Va.; mother, Isabell F. Younger of Skipwith, Va.; father, William E. Farrar of Lynchburg, Va.; five grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at her home at all times.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Wood Funeral Chapel at Chase City, Va., by the Rev. Rodney Barwick. Interment will follow in the family cemetery.

Mozelle F. Grissom

KITTRELL -- Mozelle Faucette Grissom, age 85, a resident of 108 Moss Stock Farm Road, and a former resident of 1220 Hight Street, died Saturday in a local nursing home.
She was a native of Granville County and was the daughter of the late Stephen Francis and Ada Frances Grissom Faucette. She was the widow of Clarence Hunter Grissom and was a homemaker.
She was a member of the Joy In The Lord Baptist Church and the Ladies Sunday School Class.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the J.M. White Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. L.T. Harris. Burial will follow in the Dexter Baptist Church cemetery.
She is survived by four sons, Lewis Thomas Grissom, and Ronald Len Grissom, of Henderson, Donald Glen Grissom of Kittrell, and Marvin Lee Grissom, of Norlina; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Monday night from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home of Donnie and Wendy Grissom at 106 Moss Stock Farm Road in Kittrell.
Arrangements are by the J.M. White Funeral Home.

Martha Mabry Frazier Howes
February 2, 1933 -- November 4, 2000

HENDERSON -- Martha Frazier Howes, 67, of 1708 Peace Street, died Saturday November 4th, at home. She was the beloved wife of Lebert Andre’ Howes, Sr. and resided in Henderson. She was born and raised in Franklin County, the daughter of the late Eva Stubbs and Louis Opie Frazier, Sr.
Mrs. Howes attended Campbell College and earned her degree in Science from Atlantic Christian College. She taught high school biology for thirty years in Vance and Johnston counties. Her many students over the years enjoy reminiscing about leaf projects and seed and fungus projects and complement on how well her classes prepared them for college. She will be fondly remembered by her students. She was a member of the local educator’s chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma.
Mrs. Howes enjoyed traveling and visited many places. Her favorite place was Emerald Isle where she relaxed and went fishing with her husband and friends. She most enjoyed spending time with her family especially her six grandchildren.
She was the loving mother of and is also survived by son Lebert Andre’ Howes Jr. and daughter-in-law Sonya Bean Howes of Buchanan, Virginia, daughter Audrey Howes Currin and son-in-law Daniel Gaston Currin III of Henderson, North Carolina and daughter Aimee Frazier Howes of Raleigh, North Carolina. She is also survived by six grandchildren: Lebert Andre’ Howes III, Andrea Lee Howes, Frazier Batten Howes, Christian Lee Howes, Jessica Eva Currin and Daniel Gaston Currin IV. Also surviving are two brothers L. Opie Frazier Jr., and sister-in-law Katherine P. Frazier, Harold N. Frazier and sister-in-law Jane R. Frazier, sister Jackie F. Hoyle and brother in law Wilson S. Hoyle, Jr. and by her aunt Vernelle F. Wagoner, all of Henderson. She will be missed by her many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, November 6th, at The First Baptist Church of Henderson by Dr. Marion D. Lark. Burial will follow at Sunset Gardens. The family will receive friends Sunday November 5th, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the J.M. White Funeral Home and other times at their home.
Serving as active pallbearers are Wilson Smith Hoyle III, George David Hoyle, Christopher Ray Cheever, Sr., Dr. Harold Nichols Frazier, Jr., Joseph Gary Frazier, Alton Terrance Howes, John Davis Suther and Glen Bruce Allen. Honorary Pallbearers include Dan Doster, Woody Freeze, Greg Scott, Ben T. Holden, Woody Giles, Braxton House, Chan Pittman, and Chris Howes.
Flowers are acceptable or memorials may be made to Triangle Hospice, 1804 Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway No. 112, Durham, North Carolina 27707 or to the music fund for The First Baptist Church of Henderson, 205 W. Winder St Henderson, North Carolina 27536.

Ralph Murray

HENDERSON -- Ralph Murray, age 78, a resident of 431 Waddill Street, died Saturday morning at Durham Regional Medical Center.
He was born October 17, 1922 in Harnett County and was the son of the late William Thomas and Fannie Oakes Murray.
He was salutatorian of the Henderson High School Class of 1940; a veteran of the U.S. Air Force where he served as flight engineer on a B-24 from 1942 until war’s end.
He was a 1949 Cum Laude Graduate of North Carolina State University with a B.S. degree in textile chemistry and dyeing. He worked in South Carolina for eight years and then returned to Henderson to start a dye house for Soft Spun Knitting Mill, where he retired 29 years later.
He was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church, a most-loved Boy Scout leader, and he volunteered diligently in the ACTS program of Henderson.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in the J.M. White Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Graham McChesney. Burial will follow in Elmwood cemetery in Oxford.
He is survived by his wife, Edna Freeman Murray, of the home; one sister, Evelyn Murray, of Henderson; a niece, Amy Lee Myrick, of Warrenton; and one nephew, William L. Stainback, of Raleigh.
The family will receive friends Sunday night from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home.
Serving as active pall bearers will be William L. Stainback, Paul Davis Myrick, Jr., Paul Davis Myrick, III, Bruce William Stainback, James Vaughan, Daniel F. Giddens, Jr., Richard E. Riggleman Christopher Vaughan, Jonathan Myrick, and Philip B. Giddens.

Queen K. Robertson

OXFORD -- Queen Kittrell Robertson, 90, of Oxford, died Saturday, Nov. 4, 2000, at the Rose Manor Nursing Facility in Durham. Arrangements will be announced later by Boyd’s Funeral Services of Warrenton.

Bessie O. Bullock

STEM -- Bessie Overton Bullock, 95, of 4122 Culbreth Road, died Monday, Nov. 6, 2000, at her home. She was a Granville County native and the daughter of the late James T. and Lula Caviness Overton.
She was a lifelong member of Geneva Presbyterian Church and a homemaker.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Geneva Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Alfred T. Ayscue. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are two daughters, Hallie B. Travis and Mary B. Jacobs, both of Stem; one brother, Davis Overton of Epsom; one sister, Minerva Ayscue, of Louisburg; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Flowers are accepted or memorials may be made to Geneva Presbyterian Church, c/o Frances S. Bullock, 2665 Lake Devin Road, Oxford, N.C. 27565.
Visitation for the family will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home in Oxford and at other times at the home.

Joan H. Dingman

HENDERSON -- Joan Elizabeth Harris Dingham, 44, of 189 Summit Wood Drive, Blowing Rock, died Monday, Nov. 6, 2000, in Vencor Hospital in Greensboro. She was a Person County native and the widow of Larry Dingham.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Elmwood cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Jeff Prewer.
Surviving are a son, Norman Wayne Waycaster, of Pennsylvania; three sisters, Faye C. Hull, of Escondido, Calif., Carol O. Satterwhite and Izona W. Smith, both of Henderson; and a brother, Cleve Dallas Oakley.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the cemetery.
Arrangements are by Flowers Funeral Home of Henderson.

Clara Dunston

HENDERSON -- Clara Dunston, 75, a resident of Guardian Care, died Monday, Nov. 6, 2000, at Maria Parham Hospital.
Arrangements will be announced later by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service of Henderson.

Rev. Ivery C. Mason

HENDERSON -- The Rev. Ivery Carr Mason, age 76, a resident of 416 Mitchell Street, died Monday morning at the Durham VA Hospital.
He was a native of Harnett County and was the son of the late Arthur William and Mazzie Jarman Mason. He was a Veteran of World War II having served in the Army, a retired farmer, a former employee of Harriett & Henderson Yarns, Inc., where he worked for 29 years, and was an evangelist preacher. He was a Member of the Hair’s Chapel Holiness Church in Linden, N.C. and the Trent River Freewill Holiness Association.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the J.M. White Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Earl Swinson and the Rev. James Terry. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
He is survived by his wife, Peggy Clark Mason, of the home; two step-daughters, Robin Matthews and Tammy Horton, both of Henderson, two step-sons, Bruce Ayscue and Roger Ayscue, both of Henderson; five sisters, Mary Reaves of Dunn, Mae Guin of Linden, Jerlene Adams of Four Oaks, Grace Evans of Louisburg, and Jeanette Tart of Epsom; two brothers, Garner Mason of Spring Lake and Pervis Mason of Buies Creek; and two stepgrandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Carl Allen Mason, and two brothers, Roy Mason and Stedman Mason.
The family will receive friends Tuesday night from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the homeat 415 Mitchell Street.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Robbie Horton, Phillip Murray, Robert Frazier, Tyrone Tart, Scott Matthews, Ashley Murray, Steve Lyles, and Bruce Harp.
Arrangements are by the J.M. White Funeral Home.

Queen K. Robertson

OXFORD -- Queen Kittrell Robinson, 90, of Oxford, died Saturday, Nov. 4, 2000, at the Rose Manor Nursing Facility in Durham.
Funeral services will be conducted at 12 p.m. today at Huntsville Baptist Church in Oxford. The Rev. Ralph Holloway will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are four daughters, Mary Daniel, Ann Robertson Jiminez, Australia Robertson, all of Oxford, and Pearl Willis of Richmond, Va.; one son, James D. Robertson of Washington, D.C.; two sisters, Ruth Kittrell and Sally Terry, both of Oxford; 22 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. this morning at Huntsville Baptist Church in Oxford.
Arrangements are by Boyd’s Funeral Services of Warrenton.
