Eddie W. Moore Sr.
HENDERSON -- Eddie Washington Moore Sr., 49, of 1010 Orange St., died Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2000, at his residence. He was a Vance County native and the son of Earlene Foster Moore and the late Rev. NeDempsey Moore.
He was educated in the Vance County Public Schools System and was a retired employee with the City of Henderson.
He was a member of the House of the Lord Holiness Church of Henderson where he served as a deacon of the church.
He also served as a member of Beacon Light Masonic Lodge #249, and he was also a Shriner.
He sang with numerous gospel groups and also managed his own group, The Carolina Southernaires.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Progressive Faith Baptist Church by the Revs. Benjamin Warren and Brenda Gail Peace. Burial will follow in the Elmwood cemetery.
Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife, Rosa Lee Moore of the home; three children, Eddie W. Moore Jr. of Oxford, Carol D. Moore and James E. Moore, both of the home; four sisters, Geraldine Green and Mattie Moore, both of Henderson, Effie Burwell of Maryland and Elnora Davis of Washington, D.C.; two brothers, NeDempsey Moore Jr. and Thomas Moore, both of Henderson; and five grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday at Progressive Faith Baptist Church and all other times at the home.
Memorial services will be held at 6 p.m. Monday at Beacon Light Masonic Lodge.
Pallbearers will members of Beacon Light Masonic Lodge No. 249 and Shriners. Floralbearers will be Tressie Zackery, Cherry Southerland, Betty Haywood, Casandra Lambert, Lorraine Davis, Bertha Davis, Crystal Blacknall, Chantely Hargrove, Nikki Green, Dereen Green, Angela Burwell and Lucy Steed.

Shakerra Pettaway
WARRENTON -- Shakerra Pettaway, 3, of Manson, died Friday, Nov. 10, 2000, at Maria Parham Hospital in Henderson.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the United Solid Rock Faith Ministries. The Rev. James Pettaway Sr., will officiate. Burial will follow in the Oak Level United Church of Christ cemetery.
Surviving are her parents, James and Barbara Pettaway of the home; one brother, Damian Pettaway of the home; paternal grandmother, Gracie Pettaway of Manson; paternal grandfather, William Pettaway of Manson; her maternal grandmother, Mary Helen Spruill of Manson; great-grandmother, Corine Hawkins of Manson; great-grandfather, Albert Hawkins of Oxford; and step-grandmother, Dorothy Hawkins of Oxford.
The body will be on view at Boyd’s Funeral Services Chapel on Monday until taken to the church one hour prior to the services.

Mary W. Baker
OXFORD -- Mary Wilder Baker, 81, of 1063 Enon Road, died Saturday, Nov. 11, 2000, in Carver Living Center of Durham. She was a Franklin County native and the daughter of the late John B. and Minnie Richardson Wilder. She was the widow of Kenneth Moore and Frank Baker.
She was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Mt. Zion Baptist Church by the Rev. Keith Williams. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are two daughters, Louise Ivey of Oxford and Mary Wilder Young of Oxford; one sister, Sarah Underhill of Louisburg; one brother, Marshburn G. “Monk” Wilder of Louisburg; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Visitation for the family was held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home and other times at the home.

Joseph Bullock
DURHAM -- Joseph Bullock, 74, of Hanson Hill Nursing in Durham, died Friday, Nov. 10, 2000, at Duke Medical Center. He was a Granville County native.
Surviving are two brothers, Moses Bullock Jr. of Creedmoor and Charles Bullock of Durham.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Rock Spring Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive visitors from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Betts & Son Funeral Home Inc. and other times at the home of his brother, Moses, in Creedmoor.

Joel R. Champion
GREENVILLE -- Joel Russell “Rick” Champion, 53, died Saturday, Nov. 11, 2000.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Jarvis Memorial United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Pinewood Memorial Park.
He was a graduate of 71st High School in Fayetteville. He then enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and later attended North Carolina State University. Upon graduation from N.C. State, he began his career with Sprint Telephone Company. He was a member of Jarvis Memorial United Methodist Church. A former resident of Henderson, he had served as president of the Henderson Jaycees and was a former member of the First United Methodist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Debbie Champion of the home; son, Ryan Champion of the home; daughter, Megan Champion of the home; mother, Ruth Champion of Fayetteville; and sister, Leigh Grainger of Lillington.
The family received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Wilkerson Funeral Home.

Mattie N. Denny
OXFORD -- Mattie Newton Denny, 89, of 1106 Hwy. #158, Rougemont, died Sunday, Nov. 12, 2000, at her home. She was a Granville County native, the daughter of the late Lewis and Flora Critcher Newton and the widow of Ervin Denny.
She was a member of Sharon Baptist Church and was a homemaker.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Eakes Funeral Chapel in Oxford by the Revs. Jerry Burts and Jim Shelley. Burial will be Meadowview Memorial Park.
Surviving are two sisters, Doris Newton of Rougemont and Mildred Newsome, both of Oxford.

James D. Eason
COATS -- James David Eason, 56, of 292 E. Erwin St., died Monday, Nov. 13, 2000, at Rex Hospital in Raleigh. He was a Johnston County native and the son of the late James Edward and Mozelle Creech Eason.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Rose & Graham Funeral Home Chapel in Coats. The Rev. Tim Hopkins and Dr. Jim Cochran will officiate. Burial will follow in the Coats City cemetery.
He was owner and operator of Coats Tire Service and Retreading Inc.
Surviving are his wife, Frances Campbell Eason; daughters, Lisa E. Tomlinson of Willow Spring and Tonya E. Knittel of Clayton; sisters, Lolita E. Godwin of Coats, Shirley E. Parker of Four Oaks, Genell E. Sugrue of Johnston, R.I., Joyce E. Thornton of Henderson, Judy E. Buffkin of Benson, Wanda E. Langdon of Benson, and Jennifer E. Ferrell of Angier; and three granddaughters.

HENDERSON -- Otis Foster, 87, a native of Henderson, died Friday, Nov. 10, 2000, in New York.

Alma P. Green
BUTNER -- Alma Peeples Green, 80, of 309-16th St., died Saturday, Nov. 11, 2000, at Oxford Manor Nursing Home. She was a native of Lampasas, Texas, and the daughter of the late John and Icy Mears Peeples.
She was a member of Brassfield Baptist Church and was a homemaker.
Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at South Granville Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Neil Woodlief.
Surviving are a daughter Jaquita Green Hill of Butner; two sons, Harvey C. Green of Red Rock, Texas, Howard G. Green of Milpitas, Calif.; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Visitation will follow the graveside service.

Mary H. Harris
MARIETTA, GA. -- Mary H. Harris, 100, of Marietta, Ga., died Monday, Nov. 13, 2000.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church of Henderson with the Dr. Marion Lark officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood cemetery.
A native of Berea, Ky., she moved to the Marietta area from Henderson in 1994. She was a member of Roswell Street Baptist Church and a former member of the First Baptist Church in Henderson.
Surviving are one son, Tom Harris of Marietta, Ga.; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. today at West Cobb Funeral Home.

Delas ‘Crip’ House
PICKENS, S.C. -- Delas Macon “Crip” House, 68, of 110 House Lane, husband of Carol Prehm House, died Sunday November 12, 2000 at Cannon Memorial Hospital.
Mr. House was born in Vance County, NC. He was the son of the late Billie and Robie Roberts House.
Mr. House was retired from Pickens County Office of Building Codes, and was employed with the Pickens County Stockade.
Mr. House was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War and was a member of the American Legion.
Surviving are his wife of the home; two daughters, Debra Brown and her husband, Randy, of Easley, and Tammy Anthony and her husband, Gary, of Pickens; four sons, William James House and his wife, Tina, of Pickens, Delas Macon House, Jr. of Greenville, Mitchell House and his wife, Lisa, of Dallas, NC, and Trent House and his wife, Jill, of Warrenton, Va.; one sister, Esther House Gann of Orlando, FL; and one brother, Wayne House and his wife, Charlotte, of Fayetteville, NC.
Also surviving are twelve grandchildren, Mitchell House Jr., Dustin Brown, Amanda House, Jacob Brown, Kristi House, Joey House, Amber Anthony, Sabrina House, Denver Anthony, Brooke House, Montana House and Micayla House.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, November 15, 2000 in the chapel of Dillard Memorial Funeral Home, with burial in Hillcrest Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

HENDERSON -- Clyde Jones, 84, of 96 Emerson Lane, died Friday, Nov. 10, 2000, at U.N.C. Hospital. He was a native of Lawrence, S.C.
He was a retired pullman porter.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Big Ruin Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. Clyde Walton. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Young Jones; four daughters, Elizabeth Womley of Durham, Mary Grant of Philadelphia, Pa., Rebecca Jones of Henderson and Brenda Simmons of Oxford; two sons, David Jones of Philadelphia, Pa., and Clyde Jones Jr. of Willow Grove, Pa.; four sisters, Essie Booker, Ollie Jones, Lolia Jones, all of Washington, D.C., and Bessie Lawrence of Philadelphia, Pa.; 18 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren.

HENDERSON -- Brenda Lucilla Frazier Kittrell, 48, of 741 Jefferson St., died Saturday, Nov. 11, 2000, at her residence.

Preston A. Woolard
LOUISBURG -- Preston Alex Woolard, 80, of Louisburg, died Monday, Nov. 13, 2000, at his home.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Corinth Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Mike Blevins. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Isabelle Short Woolard of the home; two daughters, Betty Jean Medlin of Louisburg and Wanda Pernell of Butner; three sons, Preston A. Woolard Jr., William Dennis Woolard, both of Louisburg, and Preston Short of Henderson; one sister, Edna Mae Ayscue of Creedmoor; half-sister, Pauline Ivey of Rockingham; one brother, Wilbert Woolard of Gastonia; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Mary Myrtis Collins Davis Williams
Warrenton Mary Myrtis Collins Davis Williams was born February 4, 1916 in Warren County, NC and departed this life November 7, 2000. Her parents, Emanuel Green Davis and Lula Robinson Somerville Davis instilled in her a strong religious conviction and the importance of education and service to the community.
Mrs. Williams was a graduate of Washington High School in Raleigh, Barber-Scotia College, Concord, NC and Shaw University, Raleigh, NC. For more than thirty years she taught in Warren County Schools; first at Old Well School, in the Arcola community; then at Jordan Hill School and finally at Vaughan Elementary School.
It was during her tenure at Old Well School that she met and married Stephen Woodrow Williams. They were the parents of two children.
She was a member of the St. Zion Missionary Baptist Church where she served as secretary, Sunday school teacher, Missionary Circle member and choir member. For a number of years she served as secretary of the Reedy Creek Baptist Association.
She also was a member of many civic and professional organizations including the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), Order of Eastern Star Rose of Sharon Chapter #42, Warren County Chapter of Les Gemmes, Board of Trustees of Warren County Community Center, American Cancer Society - Warren County Chairperson, National Education Association (NEA), North Carolina Association of Educators (NCAE), and the Warren County Chapter Retired School Personnel.
During the first years of her retirement she served as a volunteer for Warren County Schools. She was an avid reader. She also enjoyed working crossword puzzles and watching her favorite television programs.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law Magnolia Williams Clanton and Odell Delano Clanton, Jr. of Warrenton, NC; a son and daughter-in-law Willard Emanuel “Pete” Williams and Patricia Balboni Williams of Greensboro, NC; two grandchildren, Stephen Nicholas Williams and Sarah Margaret Williams of Greensboro, NC; a sister-in-law Lemira Williams Barbee of Charlotte, NC; two brothers-in-law, Herbert A. Williams (Virgie) of Raleigh, NC and Archie D. Williams (Anna) of Warrenton, NC and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday, November 11, 2000 at 12:00 noon at Shiloh Baptist Church, Arcola, NC. Grady C. Barbee, John A. Barbee, Jr., Oscar L. Davis, William O. Davis, Jr., Joseph A. Jenkins, Ronald E. Williams served as pall bearers. Honorary pall bearers were George R. Kearney, Sr., Felton B. Davis, Eddie P. Pinkney, Howard L. Powell and the Rev. Robert M. Burnette.

Lawrence A. Yancey Sr.
YANCEY -- Lawrence A. Yancey Sr., of 6511 N. Midview Road, died Thursday, Nov. 9, 2000.
Surviving are one daughter, Angelia Marie Yancey; one son, Lawrence Albert Yancey Jr.; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Plummer Yancey; and five sisters, Marion Person, Mary Wimbush, Ruth Wilson and Elizabeth Brame, all of Henderson, and Lillian Brown of Newark, N.J.
Remains rest at Walter J. Manning Funeral Home, 700 N. 25th St., where funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday by Dr. Clifton Whitaker Jr. Burial will be in Oakwood cemetery.

C. Vance Harris
HENDERSON -- C. Vance “Fat Cat” Harris, age 59, a resident of 8273 NC 39 South, died Tuesday morning at Maria Parham Hospital.
He was a native of Vance County and was the son of the late John Ollie and Jodie Pernell Harris. He was retired from Vulcan Materials, and was a member of Trinity Church Of Living God.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. in the J.M. White Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Willard Faucette and the Rev. Jeff Prewer. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Lou Champion Harris, of the home; two sons, Royall Vance Harris and Michael Anthony Harris both of Henderson; one sister, Betty H. Russell, of Henderson; one brother, Ivey Harris of Henderson; and two grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Wednesday night from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Larry Hendricks, Larry Ayscue, Mickey Sorrell, Danny Riley, Kevin Riley, Tony Smith, Perry Journigan, Earl Sorrell, Eugene Hudson, Roger Russell, David Russell, Danny Lee Harris, and Rodney Abbott.
