Lucy S. Dillard

WAKE FOREST -- Lucy Smith Dillard, 75, of 2116 Purnell Road, formerly of Green Hill Manor in Louisburg, died Saturday, Nov. 18, 2000. She was a Franklin County native and the daughter of the late Bernice and Ethel Journigan Smith. She was a retired bookkeeper and a faithful member of Grace Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Woodland Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are her sons, Thomas E. “Ted” Dillard of Wake Forest and Don W. Dillard of Kittrell; sisters, Mrs. Bob Elerick of Newport News, Va., and Mrs. Paul K. Dameron of Hampton, Va.; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Flowers are welcome or memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Wake County, 1300 Saint Mary’s St., 4th floor, Raleigh, N.C. 27605.
Friends may visit with the family from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Bright Funeral Home in Wake Forest.

Otis Foster

HENDERSON -- Otis Foster, 87, a native of Henderson, died Friday, Nov. 10, 2000, in New York.
Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. today at Mitchell Baptist Church by the Rev. Daniel W. Lilly Jr.
Surviving are three children; one sister, Iolar Foster; and two brothers, William Foster and Sam Foster.
The body will be at Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and then taken to the grave site.
Arrangements are by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service.

Jerry R. Lyon

BUTNER -- Jerry Ray Lyon, 72, of 607-15th St., died Saturday, Nov. 18, 2000, at his home. He was a Johnston County native and the son of the late Bernice L. and Ethie Chappell Lyon.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Butner and was retired form John Umstead Hospital.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church in Butner by Dr. Gene Garrison and Richard Newton. Burial will be in Carolina Memorial Gardens in Creedmoor.
Surviving are his wife, Hazel Lemons Lyon of the home; a daughter, Wendy Smith of Chapel Hill; two sisters, Swannie Fuller of Creedmoor and Bernice Turner of Clayton; and one granddaughter.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to First Baptist Church in Butner, 202 West D St., Butner, N.C. 27509 or to Cancer Research, c/o DUMC, Durham, N.C. 27710.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Eakes Funeral Home in Creedmoor and at other times at the home.
Arrangements are by Eakes Funeral Home of Creedmoor.

Deacon Arvell R. Shearin Sr.

HENDERSON -- Deacon Arvell Rena Shearin Sr., 61, of 946 Jacksontown Road, died Thursday, Nov. 16, 2000, at his residence. He was a Vance County native and the son of the late Herman and Beatrice Tarry Shearin.
He was a member of Little Zion United Holy Church where he served as a deacon, a superintendent of the Sunday school, and a member of the male choir. He worked for Ball-Foster Glass Company for over 20 years.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Little Zion United Holy Church by Pastors Brenda Peace, JoAnn Allen and Dorothy Venable and Elder Roosevelt Alston. Burial will follow in the Sunset Garden Inc.
Surviving are his wife, Juanita White Shearin of the home; three daughters, Connie Shearin of Fuquay-Varina, Teresa Clark, Angela Lewis, both of Henderson; three sons, Calvin Shearin and Arvell Shearin Jr., both of Henderson, Reginald Shearin of Gillburg; five brothers, Eddie Shearin, Alvin Shearin, Sylvester Shearin, Herman Shearin, all of Henderson, Marion Shearin of Richmond, Va.; and three sisters, Betty Richards, Essie Shearin, Eva Miles, all of Henderson.
The family will receive friends at the church from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday and at other times at the home.
The body will be on view on Monday from 10 a.m. until.
Arrangements are by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service.

Nollie K. Susewell

MANSON -- Nollie Key Susewell, 77, died Saturday, Nov. 18, 2000, at her U.S. 1 residence. She was the wife of Richard Susewell.
Arrangements are by Brown’s Funeral Services Inc. of Warrenton.

Plummer Baker

WARRENTON -- Plummer Baker, 57, of Patterson, N.J., formerly of Warrenton, died Sunday, Nov. 19, 2000, at the St. Joseph Hospital in Patterson, N.J.
Arrangements will be announced later by Boyd’s Funeral Services of Warrenton.

Thomas A. Butler

HENDERSON -- Thomas Alvin Butler, 57, of 2134 Woodland Road, died Monday, Nov. 20, 2000, in Maria Parham Hospital. He was a Sampson County native and the son of Ed H. Butler of Henderson and the late Margaret McCullen Butler.
He was a barber and real estate developer and investor, and was instrumental in the formation of the Vance County Historical Museum. He was a member of the Vance County Historical Society, Preservation North Carolina, the North Carolina History Associates, and the National Archives of History Associates. He was a former member of the Henderson Jaycees.
He was a member of First Baptist Church, where the funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, conducted by Dr. Marion D. Lark. Entombment will follow in Sunset Gardens.
Surviving are his wife, Harriette Herion Butler; a daughter, Natalie B. Adcox of Henderson; a son, Thomas A. Butler Jr. of Waynesville; and two grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the cemetery, immediately following the service.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Fred S. Hughes, Sam Jones, Robert Southerland, Ronald S. Dorsey, Frank Irvin, Kenny Mosley, John Miller, W. Carson Ellis, George Blackburn, Edgar Robertson Jr., John I. Price Jr., and Jimmy Renn. Members of the Vance County Historical Society will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the Vance County Historical Museum, c/o Nancy W. Crews, 95 Old Poplar Creek Road, Henderson, N.C. 27536.
Arrangements are by Flowers Funeral Home of Henderson.

Lucinda B. Ester

CREEDMOOR -- Lucinda Burwell Ester, 69, of 1743 U.S. Hwy. 15 South, Creedmoor, died Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2000, at the Durham Regional Hospital. She was the daughter of the late Moses and Ophelia Brandon Burwell.
Surviving are her husband, Arlease Esther of the home; two sons, Darrell Ester and Mark Ester, both of Creedmoor; three daughters, Pamela Bost, Corol Adams and Lorrie Ester, all of Creedmoor; one brother, Robert Burwell of Oxford; five sisters, Lois Braswell, Edith Rogers, Catherine Peace and Marvie Jean Burwell, all of Oxford, Ivos Counts of Roselle, N.J.; and 11 grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted on Saturday at Pettiford Grove Baptist Church. The Rev. Waddell Tapp, pastor, officiated. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
The family received visitors on Friday at Betts & Son Funeral Home of Oxford.

Helen E. Fuller

LOUISBURG -- Helen Elizabeth Fuller, 94, of Louisburg, died Saturday, Nov. 18, 2000, in Britthaven of Louisburg. She was the widow of James Fuller.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at Trinity United Methodist Church, conducted by the Revs. Jim Murphy and Rusty Womack of Mountain Grove Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are one daughter, Cora Helen F. Driver of Louisburg; one son, Milton M. Fuller of Louisburg; one sister, Ruth E. Foster of Louisburg; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
The family received friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Lancaster Funeral Home and all other times at the home of Cora Helen Driver, 4689 N.C. 39 Hwy. N., Louisburg.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the Trinity United Methodist Church, 4272 U.S. 401 Hwy. N., Louisburg, N.C. 27549.
Arrangements are by Lancaster Funeral Home of Louisburg.

Daniel C. Jackson

DOVER, N.H. -- Daniel Cooper Jackson, 67, of Dover, N.H., died Thursday, Nov. 16, 2000, at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital after a lengthy illness. He was a Vance County native and the son of Edgar S. and Shirley Jackson.
After 20 years of service, he retired as a chief boiler tender.
Surviving are his wife of 43 years, Audrey Jackson of Somerset, Mass.; two sons, Daniel C. Jackson Jr. of North Carolina, David A. Jackson of Berkeley, Mass.; three daughters, Marcia Jackson of Rochester, N.H., Jodi L. Moss of Oxford and Lisa Lee of Barrington, N.H.; five brothers, Milton R. Jackson of South Carolina, John Wayne Jackson, Edgar J. Jackson, Gerald Jackson and Carl O. Jackson; one sister, Shirleen Crocker; six grandchildren; and two great-grandsons.
He was preceded in death by a son, Mark Jackson.
A private memorial service with family members will be held today. The Cremation Society of New Hampshire is in charge of arrangements.

Hessie Mitchiner

HENDERSON -- Hessie Mitchiner, died Monday, Nov. 20, 2000, at her residence.
The family will be at 730 College St., Henderson.
Arrangements will be announced later by Garnes Funeral Service.

Cakari A. Williams

HENDERSON -- Cakari Antonio Williams, infant son of Dominique Nicole Norris and Clarence Antonio Williams, died Nov. 18, 2000, at Duke Medical Center in Durham.
Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Wortham Family cemetery.
Surviving, in addition to his parents, are two brothers, Clarence Ashonte Williams of Henderson and Taveyon Jamond Williams of Warrenton; grandparents, La-vern Norris, Kirby Norris, Mary Blue and Jimmy Watson, all of Henderson; great-grandparents, Martha Williams, Minnie Rhem and Louvenia Norris.
The family will receive friends at 419 E. Montgomery St., Henderson.
Arrangements are by Garnes Funeral Services Inc.

Vance W. Clark

HENDERSON -- Vance Wade Clark, 51, of 771 Cedar Cove Road, Henderson, died Monday, Nov. 20, 2000, at his home. He was a Vance County native and the son of the late Kenneth and Jewell Arnold Clark.
He was a tobacconist with Standard Commercial Tobacco Company.
Funeral services will be conducted today at City Road United Methodist Church, conducted by the Revs. Danielle Kirkland and Frank Sossamon.
Surviving are his wife, Kimberly Nowell Clark; a daughter, Cameron Clark of the home; and a son, Wesley Clark of Louisburg.
The family received friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they are at the home.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Duke Children’s Hospital, 512 S. Mangum St., Suite 400, Durham, N.C. 27701.

Parthenia H. Henderson

HENDERSON -- Parthenia Hawkins Henderson, 60, of the Christian Care Center, died Monday, Nov. 20, 2000, at the center.
The family will receive friends at 835 Thomas St.
Arrangements will be announced later by Garnes Funeral Service.

Daniel C. Jackson

DOVER, N.H. -- Daniel Cooper Jackson, 67, of Dover, N.H., died Thursday, Nov. 16, 2000, at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital after a lengthy illness. He was a Vance County native and the son of Edgar S. and Shirley (Overton) Jackson.

William L. Roberts Jr.

HENDERSON -- William Leonard Roberts Jr., 40, of 4005 Tryon Road, Raleigh, died Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2000, at Wake Medical Center. He was the husband of Marilyn Cameron Roberts.
Arrangements will be announced later by Williams Funeral Home.

Clarence Sledge Sr.

NORLINA -- Clarence “Heck” Sledge Sr., 86, of Norlina, died Sunday, Nov. 19, 2000, at Maria Parham Hospital in Henderson.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at Cooks Chapel Baptist Church in Warren Plains. The Rev. Joseph Cook, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Mable Reid Sledge of the home; four sons, Prince of Richmond, Va., Clarence Jr., and Eugene, both of Norlina, and Larry of Wise; one daughter, Gloria of Charlotte; three sisters, Ella Hendricks of New York, Mattie Davis of Norlina and Lillie Beamon of Georgia; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Arrangements are by R.H. Greene Funeral Home of Warrenton.

William R. Wheeler Jr.

STEM -- William Ray Wheeler Jr., 69, of 2009 Jack Clement Road, died Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2000, at his home. He was a Granville County native and the son of the late William R. and Ava Daniel Wheeler.
He was a tobacco farmer, a member, deacon and Sunday school teacher at Providence Baptist Church, and an Army veteran.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Providence Baptist Church by Dr. Randy Pittman. Burial will follow in Elmwood cemetery in Oxford.
Surviving are his wife, Rosa Green Wheeler of the home; two daughters, Jenny Wheeler Fowler of Stem and Lynn Wheeler Watson of Raleigh; one sister, Mary Louise Tilley of Durham; and two twin granddaughters.
Flowers are accepted or memorials may be made to Providence Baptist Church, 4603 Old Route 75, Oxford, N.C. 27565.
Visitation for the family will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home and at other times at the home.
Arrangements are by Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home of Oxford.

Darrell D. Bates

WARRENTON -- Darrell Doin Bates, 78, died Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2000, at Mcguire Hospital in Richmond, Va., after a lenghty illness. He was a native of Conway, Ark., and was a retired truck driver.
He was married to the late Gracie Lee Hamm. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Blaylock Funeral Home. Burial will be in Warren Plains Methodist Church cemetery.
Surviving are one daughter, Barbara Kay Shumaker of Midlothian, Va.; four sons, Ronny Bates and Tommy Bates, both of Fredericksburg, Va., Billy Bates of Moorehead, Ky., and Roy Lee Bates of High Point; two brothers, Steve Bates of Elmott, Texas, and Harold Bates of Conway, Ark.; two sisters, Lucille Wilson and Jean Ball, both of Little Rock, Ark.; 18 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the Warren Plains Methodist Church.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Blaylock Funeral Home.
