Gattis W. Gooch

HENDERSON -- Gattis Wilbur Gooch, age 85, a resident of 179 Parker St. died Saturday morning, Nov. 25, 2000, at Rose Terrace Nursing Home in Wendell.
He was a native of Wake County and was the son of the late George Washington and Nellie Florence Johnson Gooch. He was a Veteran of World War II having served eight years in the Army and was retired from Russell Goodman Construction Co.
He was a member of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church in Raleigh and the American Legion of Wake County.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. in the J.M. White Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Tim Hopkins and the Rev. Ray Anderson. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
He is survived by two sisters, Hattie G. Kitchen of Wake Forest and Mabel G. Bass of Wendell, and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Sunday night from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home of Ernest Gooch at 179 Parker St.
Serving as active pall bearers will be his nephews.
Arrangements are by the J.M. White Funeral Home.

William E. King

CREEDMOOR -- William Edward King, 69, of 2718 Sam Moss Hayes Road, died Saturday, Nov. 25, 2000, at Treyburn Nursing Center. He was a Granville County native and the son of the late Edward E. and Meta Brogden King and the widower of Dorothy Newcomb King. He was retired from the Granville ABC Board.
Memorial services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Monday at Eakes Funeral Chapel in Creedmoor by the Rev. Terry Hall.
Surviving are a daughter, Connie W. Cole of Creedmoor; one sister, Mattie Ann Riggan of Creedmoor; two brothers, Robert Lee “Ne” King of Stem, Ervin “Buck” King of Creedmoor; one grandson; and one great-granddaughter.
Visitation will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m., prior to the memorial services on Monday at Eakes Funeral Home in Creedmoor.

Donald L. Perry

HENDERSON -- Donald Lee Perry, 42, of 692 Adams St., died Thursday, Nov. 24, 2000, at Maria Parham Hospital. He was a native of Vance County and the son of Merlin Lee Perry and the late Betty Jean Brown.
He was employed by Chestnut Gulf for many years, and also Community Mart. He was also a self-employed “Handyman.” He was educated in the Vance County Public Schools System.
He was also a member of New Life Church of God in Christ where the funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday by Pastor Myron Henderson. Burial will follow in Blacknall cemetery.
Surviving, in addition to his father, are his wife, Martha A. Perry; three daughters, Donyele Perry, Brenda Perry and Paigadrin Perry, all of Henderson; two brothers, Westley Brown of Newport News, Va., and Ned Williams of New York; and one sister, Cornelius Debnam of Henderson.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Garnes Funeral Chapel and all other times at the home.
Pallbearers will be Officer Wiggins, Mike Brodie, Larry Branch, Gus Cousins, Antonio Hart, Keith Ragland, Lewis Davis, Ronald Ragland, Roman Brown and Corey Hopkins.
Floralbearers will be Vanessa Bagby, Tiffany Brodie, Sheila Bullock, Lucy Brodie, Angela Gregory, Laura Hargrove, Chris Williams and Angela Brandon.
Arrangements are by Garnes Funeral Services Inc.

Robert B. Wiggins Jr.

HENDERSON -- Robert Baskett Wiggins Jr., 52, of Rt. 2 Box 170, on Tower Road, in the Afton community, died Friday, Nov. 24, 2000, at Maria Parham Hospital.
He was a Vance County native and the son of the late Robert Baskett and Betty Ruth Turner Wiggins.
He was a seventh-grade social studies teacher at Eaton-Johnson Middle School. He was a member of the Church of the Holy Innocents, and the North Carolina Association of Educators.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Flowers Funeral Chapel, conducted by Father Dan Barker. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
Surviving are his wife, Penny Farmer Wiggins; a daughter, Stephanie Helen Wiggins of the home; two sons, Thomas MacMillan Wiggins of Durham and Matthew Turner Wiggins of the home; three stepdaughters, Rebecca Myers of the home, Katherine Myers of Durham and Emma Johns of the home; and two sisters, Betty Joyce Hight of Fayetteville and Eddie Jean Reavis of Nashville.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 1:50 p.m. today at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home on Tower Road.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Mark Reavis, Michael Reavis, Tim Farmer, Miles Blachly, Craig Reavis, Reuben Counsil, George Grissom, Henry Bryantn, Harry Bryant, Forest Aiken, Keith Aiken, Paul Daeke, and Neil Daeke.
Arrangements are by Flowers Funeral Home.

Wilbur E. Williams Jr.

HENDERSON -- Wilbur “Bill” Ellis Williams, Jr., 45, formerly of Henderson, was taken from his loving family Thursday, November 23, 2000. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Wilbur and Evelyn Williams. He is survived by his sister, Peggy Blalock, niece Beth Reavis, nephew Ellis, best friend Bill Parks of Wilmington, and loving cousins, aunt and uncle.
Bill was born January 16, 1955 in Henderson but had spent most of his adult life living and working in Cebu, an island located in the Phillipines.
Bill graduated in 1974 from Fredricks military Academy in Portsmouth, Va. He was Battalion Commander and President of his Senior Class.
Bill loved the sea, and his work and life were centered around this love. He was employed in the research area of Western Geophysical, Houston, Texas which enabled him to travel the world by sea. Bill was a Master Diver, and co-owner and founder of Parasail Asia Company in Cebu. He was at his home in Cebu at the time of his death.
We are grateful for his life, love and family and friends, and most of all his spirit of adventure. Friends are invited to join the family in a memorial service to be held Saturday, December 2, at 2 p.m., in the Chapel at Flowers Funeral Home in Henderson.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Estelle Easterby Armstrong

WINSTON-SALEM -- Estelle Easterby Armstrong, formerly of Henderson, N.C. died Sunday, Nov. 26, 2000 at the Brookridge Retirement Community in Winston-Salem, NC after an extended illness.
She was born on July 18, 1923 in Laurens, S.C. to Ernest D. and Estelle Gregory Easterby. She graduated from Converse College. She was a long-time member of First Baptist Church in Henderson, where she served as Chairperson of the Memorials Committee and the Missions Committee and was a member of the Finance Committee. She was a past President of the Hospital Guild at the Maria Parham Hospital and a member of the ALMA Book Club.
She is survived by her husband, Jack W. Armstrong of Winston-Salem, a son and his wife, Bill and Margaret Armstrong of Denver, Colo.; three grandsons, Bill, Jr., Brian, and Spencer; and a sister, Harriett Easterby Faris of Laurens, SC.
A memorial services will be conducted by Dr. Marion D. Lark at First Baptist Church, Henderson, N. C. on Thursday, Nov. 30, 2000 at 11 a.m. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the Fellowship Hall.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Alzheimer’s Association, 3420 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, NC 28215.
Arrangements are by the J.M. White Funeral Home.

Marrian T. Durham

RICHMOND -- Marrian T. Durham, 85, of Richmond, Va., formerly of Ridgeway, died Sunday, Nov. 26, 2000, in Richmond, Va.
Arrangements will be announced later by Boyd’s Funeral Service of Warrenton.

Mary Green

OXFORD -- Mary E. Cash Green, 79, of Louisville, Ky., died Sunday, Nov. 26, 2000. She was the sister of Lelia C. Royster of Butner.
Arrangements are by G.C. Williams Funeral Home in Louisville, Ky. Local announcement is by Betts and Son Funeral Inc.

Bruce G. Harris

OXFORD -- Bruce G. Harris, 46, of 8109 Benny Blackwell Road, died Monday, Nov. 27, 2000, at his home.
Arrangements are by Betts and Son Funeral Home Inc.

Mildred H. Fuller

HENDERSON -- Mildred Harton Fuller, 72, of 1217 Eaves Road, Henderson, in the Epsom community, died Sunday, Nov. 26, 2000, in Maria Parham Hospital. She was a Vance County native and the daughter of the late Alvin Taylor and Christine Breedlove Harton.
She was a retired legal secretary. She was a member of Liberty Vance United Church of Christ.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today in Liberty Vance United Church of Christ, conducted by the Revs. John R. Yevak and Thomas Madren. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are her husband, F. Brummitt Fuller Jr.; two daughters, Nancy F. Collier and Patricia F. Overton, both of Epsom; a son, Jeffrey T. Fuller of Richlands; two sisters, Betty H. Ikner and Ann H. Parrish, both of Cokesbury; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
The family received friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday in the fellowship hall of Liberty Vance United Church of Christ. All other times, they are at the home.
Serving as active pallbearers will be John Parrish, Brad Ikner, Carlton Eaves, Russell F. Eaves, Donnie Newton, Alton Foster, John A. Rogers, Jay Fuller, Linwood “Woody” Harton Jr., and Bert Perkinson.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Liberty Vance United Church of Christ, Choir Fund, c/o Joyce Ayscue, 199 Epsom Rocky Ford Road, Henderson, N.C. 27536.

Linda Partin

HENDERSON -- Linda Partin, age 38, a resident of Vance County, died Monday at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill, N.C. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 29 at 2:30 pm at Mount Carmel United Methodist Church by the Reverend Joe Jones. She is survived by two daughters, Miss Randa Partin of Henderson and Ms. Erica Hennasy.

Joseph Sneed

HENDERSON -- Joseph “Joe” Sneed, 74, of 2555 Stagecoach Road, died Saturday, Nov. 25, 2000, at his residence. He was a Vance County native and the son of the late William Henry and Florence Etta Hargrove Sneed.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Mt. Zion United Church of Christ by the Rev. Johnny Hargrove officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Virginia Thomas Sneed of the home; two sons, Joseph Kenneth Sneed and Michael Sneed, both of Henderson; two daughters, Verlena Hargrove and Bergie Lee Hargrove, both of Henderson; five sisters, Essie Thomas, Ada Yancey, Florence Hatcher, all of Henderson, Reatha Clark of Bullock and Annie Ragland of Harrisburg, Pa.; six brothers, William Sneed, John Sneed and Herbert Sneed, both of Oxford, and Leroy Sneed of Durham; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the residence. The body will be on view until taken to the church one hour before the services.
Arrangements are by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service.

Myrtle Taylor

BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- Myrtle Beatrice Newton Taylor, 86, died Thursday, Nov. 23, 2000, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Brooklyn. She was a native of Warren County and the daughter of the late Sam and Ella Newton. She was the widow of Alfred Taylor Sr.
Surviving are one son, Lee Taylor of Brooklyn, N.Y.; one sister, Hattie Gregory of Baltimore, Md.; 12 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren.
Arrangements are by Lawrence H. Woodward Funeral Home of Brooklyn, N.Y.

Nellie Thomas

CREEDMOOR -- Nellie Gray Cole Thomas, 89, of 9704 Boyce Road, died Saturday, Nov. 25, 2000, at her home. She was a Granville County native, the daughter of the late John Thomas and Norma Critcher Cole and the widow of William Irvin Thomas.
She was a member of Olive Grove Baptist Church and a member of the Faithful Workers Sunday School Class. She was retired from Murdoch Center.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Olive Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Jack Hollowell. Burial will be in Oak Grove Memorial Gardens in Durham.
Surviving are two daughters, Gail T. Aiken of Creedmoor and Janice T. Harkey of Mt. Pleasant; a son, William C. “Billy” Thomas of Creedmoor; a sister, Elsie C. Jones of Rougemont; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Olive Grove Baptist Church Building Fund, 3024 Olive Grove Church Road, Creedmoor, N.C. 27522.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Eakes Funeral Home of Creedmoor and at other times at the home.

Stephanie Renee Tolar

CHARLOTTE -- Ms. Stephanie Renee’ Tolar, 25, of Charlotte, NC died Saturday, November 25, 2000. She fought a courageous battle against the long term illness of cystic fibrosis. Memorial services will be 7:00 PM Tuesday, November 28, 2000 at McEwen Funeral Service, Charlotte Chapel. Reverend Jim Young will be officiating the services. The family will receive friends at their home Monday evening from 7:00 to 9:00 PM at the residence of Deborah and Gary Russell, 2501 Bushy Pine Court, Charlotte.
Stephanie Renee’ Tolar was born December 23 1974, in Charlotte, NC and the daughter of Robert G. and Deborah (Hendricks) Tolar. She is survived by those who loved her very much, her mother, Deborah Russell and her husband, Gary; her father, Robert G. Tolar of Lincoln Park, New Jersey; her brother, who was the light of her life, Brandon S. Russell; maternal grandparents, Shirley Scott and her husband, Fred of Charlotte; paternal grandparents, Robert H. Tolar and his wife, Helga of Jacksonville, Florida and Charles Russell and his wife, Mary of Charlotte; aunts, Sheila B. Whitmore of Charlotte, Beverly Britnell of Dallas; uncles, Greg M. Scott of Charlotte, and Michael P. Tolar of Roswell, New Mexico; special cousin, Chad Caldwell of Dallas; special friend, Steve Kastelic of Indian Trail, NC; great grandmothers, Rena E. Gupton of Henderson, NC and Virginia W. Scott of Charlotte; and many other aunts, uncles, and cousins.

WARRENTON -- Lillian Alston, 88, of the Red Hill community, Warrenton, died Friday, Nov. 24, 2000, at the Maria Parham Hospital in Henderson.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Schocco Chapel Missionary Baptist Church. The Rev. Lennis Thorpe Sr., pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are her husband, Joseph Alston Sr. of the home; one son, Joseph Alston Jr. of the home; and one sister, Roberta Perry of Warrenton.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Boyd’s Funeral Services of Warrenton.

Dan T. Brown Sr.

OXFORD -- Dan Thomas Brown Sr., 64, of 2572 Carolyn Courts, died Monday, Nov. 27, 2000, at Duke Medical Center. He was a Durham County native and the son of the late Otto Thomas and Lottie Browning Brown.
He was of the Baptist faith and was medically retired.
Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at South Granville Memorial Gardens by the Rev. John Whitley.
Surviving are his wife, Sylvia Neal Brown of the home; two daughters, Michelle B. Terry of Durham, Melissa B. Gilliam of Creedmoor; three sons, Dan T. Brown Jr., Ricky Neal Brown, Robbie M. Brown, all of Oxford; sisters, Sheridean Tulio of Los Angeles, Calif., Marie Molino of Nashville, Tenn., Kay Brown and Faye Brown, both of Hillsborough; a brother, Leroy Brown of Hillsborough; stepmother, Ruth Vaughan of Durham; and seven grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Eakes Funeral Home in Oxford and at other times at the home.
Arrangements are by Eakes Funeral Home of Oxford.
